Always on Brightness - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hello,
As the title says, is there a way to reduce the brightness of always on display? It's too high and it's distracting for those around me.

Would love to that as well, but I think there is now way system side...

I think it uses the auto brightness setting for the display as I see it getting darker or brighter depending on the light. There is no way to adjust it separately afaik.

Thanks for your answer, but it doesn't. I already tried to turn it off, but it keeps changing by itself.

As @ewokuk said, it uses an auto brightness feature, but not the user-adjustable one. It's fixed, you cannot make changes to it unfortunately.

I don't mind the brightness, but I'd give away my first-born to get rid of that battery percentage indicator on the AOD

Hey, a bit late but but noone could give a pleasing answer.
Just double click on the clock of your always on display, you will get a option scale to set the brightness level as you wish.

A bit late, bit still useful. Thank you!

[Q] MT4GS lcd brightness levels

Hi guys! I need to confirm something if this is just an issue of my phone or this is just it on all MT4GS devices.
When manually adjusting lcd brightness does anybody notice that brightness levels past middle seems the same? I mean when I adjust the brightness level on settings and when it's past the middle level the brightness doesn't seem to increase anymore. It's just very noticeable on the first 3 levels. Hope anybody here could give some feedback.

On mine the increase or decrease past the middle is subtle but it does make a difference. Whether you can notice it depends on your ambient lighting.
Really? I'm pretty sure mine doesn't really adjust it's brightness... And I tried every ROM I can get even stock and still the same. Would love to have feedback on some users also from this. Maybe it's with the LCD type. If I can confirm that this is a software problem then I will really be increasing the brightness level by modding it.

I checked again in different lighting... a dim room, a brightly-lit bathroom, and outdoors in daylight. I could not tell any difference outdoors or in the bathroom, but in normal lighting and more so in the dim room, it was very obvious that there was change past the middle. This is using the Miktouch 0.7 rom with standard kernel.
Ok I'm gonna try it in a dim room later. If it doesn't change only means I got a broken hardware :/ BTW I'm using a full stock ROM when doing this.

Im on pacman rom and my brightness adjusts past halfway
Ok confirmed I got a broken brightness level... lol dunno how this can happen but the level works only up to 1/8 of the full scroller in the brightness setting. Any adjustments past that won't work anymore.
tried it in stock rom, miktouch rom, sense 4.0 rom and CM9 ROM results are the same. So lame I just noticed this when I used my phone from a very bright sunny day and the screen is barely noticeable.

On mine, when moving past the middle there seems to be just two minor alterations, at the 3/4 mark and the full mark. I can notice them when I'm in normal room light and more so in dim light.

It could be that automatic brightness is turned on overriding the manual setting, depending on what rom you are running.
Nope can't be possible... The setting is working but not fully. I can adjust brightness only up to the 1/8 level of the scroller past that brightness does not change anymore.

[Q] Tune auto-brightness

What's the best way to tune the auto-brightness on the N5?
It's a bit too bright at night, I want it to go lower. I tried a couple of apps, but didn't really work too well, or maybe I couldn't figure out how to configure them too well.
Otherwise it's mostly fine, other than being too quick to react to only slight fluctuations in ambient light.

Yeah, its waaaaay to bright. I had to go manual on it. There is no way to control automatic brightness on stock android. You would have to wait for custom roms to be able to adjust automatic brightness levels... except you know someone at Google working on Android project?
YAAB works for me, check the divide range settings by 10 setting for night mode.

That's the app I tried (and Lux). What does that setting exactly do? I didn't have it checked before. I will try it now, thanks for the tip.

[Q] Capacitive Button Brightness on 11S

Hello,
I just received my Oneplus One, directly updated it to 44S with OTA updates...
Unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP and SuperSU.
My issue is the capacitive buttons are very difficult to see in normal day, in house...
You can only see it at night...
Is there a way to fix this ?
Thank you
I have the same problem... It is not very bright
I think by design, it's just not very bright when used outdoors or in light area. At least on my oneplus that's the way I saw it as. I just kind of remembered the location and disabled the brightness of the buttons.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
No, mine is very low compared to pictures seen on the web...
It is not just by design.

Yes, I'm sure, I tried to set value myself with adb, max is 255, and it is very low...
Edit : Just took a picture with a LG G3 :
and, the LG see the button better than real, with the light of the room, it is quite hard to see buttons...
It's a known issue and hardware at fault. Use the onscreen buttons instead.

notification light

I know on the launch they talked about the light on the edge of the screen.
I don't see this option on my phone or I am missing something??

You're not missing something, it's supposed to come in a future update soon. I think it was mentioned in that ask me anything on oneplus.com
Think it flashes for one second. Dont have the phone but I think you can enable it in display settings somewhere

Reviewers already shown that it's already working.
I don't have the device yet to tell the steps find the edge lighting setting.

There is no option that I found to turn it on or off. It just works....When you receive at text you will receive a blue light is going to appear down the curved side of the glass. It happens really fast. They should really have an option to extend how long you will see it for.

You probably just need to have ambient display enabled for new notifications. Bit of a useless feature mind you.Needs inprovment to flash or pulse but could then become a battery drain
According to an ask me anything session in their forums they are looking into making it more customizable and are also considering adding Always On Display:
Q: Any enhancements in OOS to utilize the curved display in 7Pro?
A: Edge lighting for notification would be a handy feature and we are still considering to add more features that will utilize the curved display in future.
Q: Are the edge notification colors customizable?
A: Not as of now but its something we are considering for future updates
Q: Is there any consideration of added a Always On Display feature? I currently own the Galaxy S8 and I actually like the AoD feature.
A: It's still under consideration. We are working on improving power consumption efficiency for this feature before we implement it.

The edge lighting is pretty useless as is. It flashes for one cycle then disappears. I don't understand how OnePlus thinks this is of any use. Normal people don't stare at their phones all day hoping to catch a glimpse of a notification. I also don't want to have to pick up the phone or tap the screen to check. They opted for no LED, so make edge lighting persistent and customizable. The promise of this feature was actually one of the main reasons I upgraded from the 6T. The 7 Pro is a very impressive device but edge lighting in its current form is worthless.

I was just getting ready to post this. I used it on my 6T, S10+ (untill Holey Light came out) and now also using it on my 7 Pro.
Once set up it works great.
Still don't have the phone, but does this app cause the phone not to go to deep sleep (causing loads of wakelocks)? And does it contribute to screen on time? (meaning that the phone thinks that you're using the screen while it's only the edge lighting that is on).
Makes sense to stay until cleared (comparing with Samsung devices all the time clock on). At the end this is the same display which can handle it without too much battery drainage

So you're saying your auto brightness is off and you have it manually cranked all the way up but the issue is that it randomly dims and then gets bright again, on and off constantly?

It's difficult for me to determine whether it's something intentionally done by the software to limit the screen brightness or a defect. If it's the latter and you can still exchange or at least attempt a warranty swap through a carrier, it maybe something to look worthwhile to look at.
Sent from my SM-N986U using Tapatalk
If you're saying that the Note 20 Ultra isn't as bright as previous Samsung phones I would concur!
I have an S10+ and Note 20 Ultra, and I don't know what brightness "problem" is people talking about. They're almost identical. You know that you can adjust brightness to your taste, even in auto, right? By default is dimmer because of energy saving stuff, but you can move the slider up...
I have a note 10+ I still daily, definitely dimmer than my n20u, but that sounds like software trying to adjust for some reason.
Samsung is buggy, will always be buggy I feel like.

look its same like iphone
if you use iphone about 5 min its become hote thenn the screen dim
i know its in note 20 ultra as well if you use the phone surf lets say facebook 5 min its become little hot and dim the screen (not much ,little bit) at least with the exinos chip

no man auto brightness is off
try it out! if you in a dark place not alot of light even if the screen on full brightness it still will dim itself abit
but when you go no outside but to room with much more lite the screen will be more strong
its like the auto brightness even when off still doing somthing to keep the screen
It may be to protect your eyes or something but mine does this as well.
Auto Brightness - Off
Manually set brightness to highest point
Then if you go from a dim room to sunlight the screen will brighten up even with auto brightness off so you can see it under sunlight.
Anyone manage to get this issue resolved? When the phone get hot, the screen dim to the extend u cannot see clearly under the bright hot sun. Using Samsung superb chip. Really lots of issue with note 20 ultra. Samsung taking customer for granted now!

Works well on all my phones, but our individual experience with chrome doesn't add much to the fact that Samsung's software might be limiting the user experience, which it is, more so than other manufacturers.
After all, we should be the ones to dictate what we want to use for web browser or any other app and not have to change it because samsung has buggy software managing it's hardware. Other manufacturers have it down, imy currently loving my xperia mark 2 and the way it's optimized.
