backup of drm-keys on Z5 necessary, when switching to lineage OS? - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
after owning my z5 for nearly 2 years now, I really want to get back to cyanogen / lineage os. I loved CM on my old Galaxy S4!
I read in several posts and forums that, when unlocking my bootloader without backing up the drm keys of my z5 device, the quality of the photos / camera will get worse, ' cause the sony algorithm for image processing won't work anymore without those keys.
But....
When I open up the bootloader (wihtout prior downgrade to Adroid 5 for backing up my drm keys), in order to get root access, install a custom recovery like twrp and flash lineage os, wouldn't be those drm-keys be useless either way? Or do I have a misunderstanding in anyway? Because when flashing lineage OS , I suppose the sony algorithms for picture enhancement won't be used anyway, because of the different OS (lineage instead of "Sony-Android") ?
Second question:
Does anyone have experience with a rooted xperia z5, without drm-keys (no prior backup) ? Is the picture quality really so much worse? Especially when using cyanogenmod or lineage OS or any other aosp?
thx for your input

Q1.Downgrade android 6 with flashtool. No need BL unlock. Read my thread. Download android 6 ftf and follow step 1 to 14. Use backupTA v2, works with android 6 and no need root access. Then unlock bootloader.
Q2.All custom roms has drm fix solution, so no need drm keys anymore. In my thread there are also patched kernels which means no need drm, everything works like stock.
You have z5 about 2 years, so no need to backup keys. Your warranty is void now. Unlock bootloader, use custom roms or stock with ROOT access and many features.. Try all stock based roms like existens, rsx. They have XZ UI and many more..
Have fun with your new Z5 experience.
My thread on General. Nougat FTF, it has all instructions about installation. @Sy36

Thank you for hints and advices. But I also want to have root-access to my smartphone, because i want to use adblock and a firewall and other stuff, for which I definately will need root access. So I will have to open the bootloader of my device.

[Q] Will a brand new Z3 be still rootable ?

Hi,
im looking at buying a Z3 at the weekend but the main thing is will it be still rootable? Im not sure what firmware it will come with
Are all versions still able to achieve root?
If so could someone link me to the best root method, much appreciated
I've bought a Z3 3 weeks ago and it rooted just fine. You do need to flash an older firmware

5.0.2 isn't rootable, at least not directly.
As long as we have root method for at least one fw available for device we can root all new firmwares.
So...it's not a problem to root Z3, no matter which fw was on it.
All you need is to downgrade to 4.4.4 (version that could be rooted), root it, install recovery and then upgrade by flashing prerooted ROM.
Z3 will retain root possibility as long as its alive...
Of course, all of that applies for locked bootloader.
If you want to unlock bootloader, you could root device by flashing kernel via fastboot...

thanks for the help, phone is coming tomorrow so it will be the first thing i do.
Coming from a nexus 5 so should be quite an improvement, especially battery life.
Another Question
is app2sd built into the firmware? or do you need a third party app which requires root?
things i need installed on SD card:
all games / apps including titanium backup PRO
can it be done?
If you get a new T-mobile Z3, you will not be able to root or unlock the bootloader.

Thinking about buying T-Mobile D6616 - Are rooting and ROMs possible?

Just switched to T-Mobile and need a band 12 enable phone. I really like the Z3 (I know it's old, but 2015 phones have underwhelmed me) and I was wondering if root and custom ROMs are possible. I've look around online and every answer seems to be different. My ultimate goal would be to be able to flash a 6.0 ROM, either Sony's concept or a custom one. Root on 5.1 would be fine, but I don't want to lose the camera algorithms and DRM keys that I have heard about.

You can root with Kingroot and there some things out there to convert to supersu once rooted. Custom Recovery is good but bootloader is locked and no way to unlock as far as I know. So root is good but no custom roms. This phone will probably never get to 6.0 and if it does it will be in the next year.

Z5P to marshmallow...

I am a complete n00b at this, but so far i have successfully.....
-Unlocked bootloader
-Rooted phone
-Installed TRWP and boot.img
-Installed SuperSU
I did not restore DRM keys as i did not back them up (the guide i followed did not mention this!). So i lost DRM, but im guessing if i used a 6.0.1 custom rom that the developer will install some aftermarket DRM function?.
But what i want to do now is, get the 5.1.1 android updated to the latest 6.0.1. Just for the sake of being on the latest. (Hoping it works fine with xposed). I gather that updating it via the message i get on the phone directly via the network would unroot the phone?. So what is the way i should update to marshmallow with my Z5 premium?. I have been searching for n00b guides specifically for this phone model, without any success. I guess maybe the option would be for a custom rom from a developer on here?.
Help much appreciated.
Yes if you update you will lose root.
But you can easaly get it back and also get most of the DRM functions back.
Take a look at this thread.

Sony Z5 - rooting/unlocking bootloader/back up of drm keys

Hi XDAers
Can anybody help me out - I have always rooted my phones and after purchasing my Sony Z5 last year I thought by now there would be a relatively easy way of rooting. Apparently I can unlock my bootloader to go to the next step of rooting, however I would lose my drm keys... of which I cannot backup without root!!! Rooting is still blocked because of the locked bootloader. I have recently upgraded to the Android 7 firmware - ugh, I can't stand it and it really messed my phone up - so I want root even more. I'm not hugely techy and I don't feel brave enough to go through a lot of complex downloadin and flashing of different programs etc - but I would really appreciate some advice.
The amount of bloatware on the phone is horrendous and I really miss my Titanium Backup..... is the Sony Z5 a lost cause and is it time for a new phone?? Don't think I would ever go back to a Sony.
Anyway, if anyone has some advice for me I would be really grateful.
Thanks
Jackie

ROM without root (NOT how to install ROM without rooting phone)

So, this is a slightly different question that what these forums are for.
I'm looking to install a ROM on my Z5, so I can have the latest version of Android and hopefully squash some bugs (especially random Bluetooth turning off). This is all well documented in the forums, but all these ROMs usually come with root included and here's where my problem starts.
There are many apps on my phone that won't work with root, like bank apps, Android Pay and Netflix just to name a few. So, I'd like to have a costume ROM that doesn't have root included. Xposed used to have a module for temporarily disabling root but from my memory, it was never reliable; and there's no Xposed for Nougat yet.
I know many of you install ROM in order to customize your phone as much as possible, my goal is not customization. My goal is to have the latest code, with the latest security fixes and with as many bugs fixed.
So, is there a ROM that I can install that comes without root? OR if there's a way to remove root from any ROM?
I do understand that my bootloader has to be unlocked, that's a given (just in case you were about to mention it). Also, rooting as an initial/intermediate step is also very acceptable, just not the final product.
You want custom rom and bypass netflix or bank apps, android pay etc. Custom rom is the meaning of BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED device, so there is no way to bypass these apps without Root on custom roms. Magisk or some Xposed modules do that, but not guaranteed.
Flash STOCK FTF on my thread (steps 1-14) and then flash your TA BACKUP. This will lock your bootloader..
