Can't install OS - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Hi everyone,
I'm having a very deep problem and haven't been able to fix it. This will take a while to explain, so tet me start from the beginning.
I have a Honor 8 FRD-L04 and I recently updated to the latest firmware I was prompted to update by Huawei: B385, and everything was working perfectly until I decided to root the phone. I was rooted before Nougat update, so the bootloader was already unlocked. I proceeded to flash the TWRP recovery via fastboot and then the Super SU root file, and here is where everything started to go down .
When I tried to boot the phone, it got stuck at the honor 8 logo splash screen, so I went back to TWRP recovery and advanced wipe, by mistake, internal storage, system and data. So after this, no more OS installed in my phone and I didn’t have a backup :crying:!! After that, I tried many things I read on the forums and at the end I was trying to install a stock rom (b140, b150 and 162) via dload method but all of them said incompatibility version bla bla bla. I also tried to flash the extracted boot, recovery, cust and system images via fastboot and then to update via dload method but no use because flashing the cut.img threw an error FAILED (remote: partition error) and the system.img an error FAILED (remote: sparse flash write failure).
I also tried to do this via TWRP recovery and installing the .zip files from the updates, but after trying this I got a new error where it said: Failed to mount ‘/vendor’, ‘/product’, ‘/version’. After a while of hard thinking, I downloaded the update.zip for the b385 and extracted the system, boot and recovery images, and flashed them through fastboot and finally some success. I saved the update.app in the dload folder on the sdcard but it stops at 5% and again I got the Software Incompatibility error.
I don’t know what else to do, I am losing all hope to recover my phone. I have fastboot access and can use the TWRP 3.1.03 recovery.
Please shed some light on my problem, I’ll be forever grateful :good:.

Thanks for the reply @Rommco05, but looking at the post mentioned, he wasn't on Nougat before the brick, I was. Also he has an FRD-L09, mine is FRD-L04. I already have the twrp-3.1.0-3-frd.img recovery. I will try it anyway, but I can't find the B131 update he uses for FRD-L04. Sorry if I am missing something obvious, but I'm pretty new at this.
What bothers me the most is the error:
Updating partition details...
Failed to mount '/vendor' (Invalid argument)
Failed to mount '/product' (Invalid argument)
Failed to mount '/version' (Invalid argument)
This error appears every time. When I wipe, format data, factory reset or try to install something. For example, I try to zip the CM14.1 and gapps and they install and the error also appears. BTW, installing this CM14.1 didn't make my phone work.
Anyone had this before? been looking through the forums and can't find anything about it.

I think I understood you, you mean the FRD-L09 B131 is the equivalent to FRD-L04 B162? I'm gonna try extracting the boot, recovery, cust and system from the B162 update.app and flash it via fastboot and then use dload method with the same rom and let you know if it works.
After trying...
So I tried to flash the boot, recovery, cust and system.img extracted from the B162 update.app and the boot and recovery flashed without any problems but for cust and system happened what I reported at the first post.
Flashing the cust.img:
target reported max download size of 471859200 bytes
sending 'cust' (258509 KB)...
OKAY [ 9.386s]
writing 'cust'...
FAILED (remote: partition error)
finished. total time: 9.398s
Flashing the system.img
target reported max download size of 471859200 bytes
sending sparse 'system' (433185 KB)...
OKAY [ 22.648s]
writing 'system'...
FAILED (remote: sparse flash write failure)
finished. total time: 22.742s
How to proceed?

I have finally revive my Honor 8 FRD-L04. Since my problem was I was on Nougat before I bricked my phone, I couldn't use any MM firmware available. I had tried to rollback before but it always said incompatibility error. Then I found this post https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70643084&postcount=2 were they have the Rollback package L04C900B300 and the Firmware FRD-L04C567B122. This is the package that worked for me!!! Hope this helps somebody else because it made my life miserable for 2 days straight!!
This can be marked as solved admin. Thanks

Hi i think i have the same problem butmy device is FRD L09. I was on Nougat B381 (dirty flash through twrp) and everything was fine, but "Smart Key" option in Smart assistence didn't appear. So i tried to restore my backup but i bricked the phone, it only shows eRecovery. I'm able ro use fastboot so i can flash what is needed. But this is the problem idk what to do. I've done a lot of things, flashed cust, system etc with failure same as you, same errors, i tried to install lineage os but got zip corrupted, tried to go back to stock with eRecovery but it wasn't able to find any package (mah), i tried to reflash the update.zip of my working rom (B381) but this time said that the zip was corruptes and finally i tried the dload method wit vol + and - but after 5% it failed....can you please help me? I have this phone as main phone and i really need to get it back working :'( i lost any hope

Hi @Giuskiller, from my experience I could tell you to use the rollback package I mention in this post. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70643084&postcount=2
You are running nougat, so no firmware from mm will work for you. Any other custom firmware needs the base architecture of a full firmware, pls correct me if I'm wrong. This is solely based on my experience. Use the rollback package mentioned before and the stock firmware for the FRD-L09 also available there. Let me know how it goes for you. Good luck!!

i tried to download right now ..but 404 error not found. So actually i'm downloading rollback package for italy on Honor official site, i also have the firmware B131 so...when download is finisched i have to flash by vol+ and vol- the rollback, then i have to put the other dload folder content the firmware and flash it and should work?
Edit : Doesn't work. Putted the rollback package in the root of my external sd card (i have also other folders) but i got a failure after 5% no matter what i did....where i'm wrong?

How i access to internal memory? The phone doesn't boot only shows erììRecovery with "Download latest version and recovery, reboot, shutdown"
Edit: tried to format data in twrp and it says failed to mount /system (invalid argument

I'll explain what i did.
1) Download rollback zip and firmware zip from Honor support
2) Extracted the rollback.zip so i had "dload" folder with "UPDATE.app" inside
3) Putted the whole dload folder in my external SD card (in the root, where other folders such as Android, DCM etc are)
4) Tried to flash with Vol+ and Vol- but after 5% it gave me an error like the package wasn't present or something like that

Nope, but formatting my ext sd card and putting dload (rollback) actually worked. I was able to install it without problems. Now i'm waiting to pass on sd the full firmware to see if i can finally get rid of all of this and install it

EDIT3: I made a factory reset from recovery and now boots!!!!!!!! Thank you very much

Sorry for the abscense. I'm glad you were able to get your phone back. Good luck!

I'm having a very similar problem to this. I'm getting the errors unable to mount cust, vendor and product. I've tried the things you guys said helped you but it's still not working. Can you go into more detail about what you guys did? Did you flash the rollback throw TWRP or the dload method? Because the dload method still fails at 5% for me. And it doesn't show up as flashable on TWRP. I even tried formatting my SD card but still nothing. Please, help would be appreciated.

No, it wasn't successful. I put the dload folder with the UPDATE.app file on my SD card and did the power+vol up&down method. It failed at 5% like it has been. I used this one for FRD L04 that OP posted. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70643084&postcount=2

No, there's also the files there for L04 underneath the one for L09. And yes, I still have access to TWRP but when I try to do things it gives me the error that it failed to mount cust, vendor and product.

Root for MT7-L09 B560

Hey all,
Has anyone tried rooting the new OTA firmware B560? If so, can you post which versions of TWRP and SuperSU were used? And if you happen to have the links to the downloads that would be great too!
T.I.A.
Hi, for twrp I've used the version from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3156779 for supersu used the version 2.62 from chainfire website. Installed twrp through fastboot, then in twrp installed supersu. I believe newer versions of supersu works too.

My problem is I never make it past the Huawei Logo. So I have no idea if SuperSU actually installs. I have reflashed stock recovery for B560, but that still doesn't seem to help. The next step I'm going to take now is to reinstall the update package for B560 and then if I'm able to boot up I'll try your method. Wish me luck!

ok i go to phone manager and allow supersu to autolunch
now supersu works.
I just used the unroot zip and it worked. This is good as I can root, make changes then unroot.
Edit:
It seems removing root has allowed my file manager to still do root operations, possibly as it was already allowed root access prior to uninstalling SU. Other user apps cannot access root. I just put the Huawei Notepad app back into system/priv-app from backups folder in Storage. Permissions were ok without altering. All I needed was a wipe dalvik/cache in TWRP and reboot.
Unfortunately I reflashed the Stock Recovery and now I'm not able to do anything. I've tried adding the dload folder with the B560 update to reinstall the firmware, but it fails at 5%, with both the OTA update and the Full versions. I'm soooo scared that I have bricked my device. When I reboot into the stock recovery I get 3 options, Reboot System, Wipe data/factory reset and Wipe cache partition. And when I manually force it into fastboot/rescue mode the computer doesn't recognize the phone.
Please someone tell me that my device can be saved somehow! I don't know what else to do :*(

Which stock recovery did you use though? It must be the right one to work.
I found a flash fail at 5% was when there is no update in the /System/dload folder if you're trying to force it to do OTA. I did that by accident. Thought I bricked it but it re-booted ok.
If you use the dload folder in SD card, Marshmallow prefers to kick off the update from the dialler app.
If you used the wrong recovery, maybe it will flash from SD ok with a different ROM but we need to know exactly what recovery you flashed to it. That controls partitioning which you probably messed up.
See if you can re-install a driver and see it with ADB somehow.

OTA update, rooted phone

Hello.
I own a FRD-L19C432
Firmware is B120
bootloader unlocked and rooted
Some weeks ago I got an update notification for B131
Because TWRP was installed, I ignored it for a while.
Then I flashed stock recovery to do the update.
Unfortunately I flashed wrong recovery. Extraced it from FRD-L19C636B120
I did not notice my mistake and tried to do the OTA update.
Phone booted to recovery, tried to flash, stopped saying that something went wrong. Can't remeber the exact error message. I think it said to download the update again.
Phone booted back to system. Still on B120.
Since this happend the update app says that there is no newer firmware than B120. No OTA and no full package.
I realized some days later that I flashed wrong revocery. Then I flashed the correct one hoping that the update app will show B131 agian. But it didn't.
I'm glad I did't brick the phone by flashing the wrong recovery.
But how do I get the update?
I already tried to download manually via hicloud. But I cant find B131. Did they call B131 back?
search for the update via huawei firmware finder by team MT

its not hard to do . go the official web site . download the latest .
Send the file ( Update.app ) to ur sd card ( inside dload Folder ) insert the sd back to ur honor
make sure ur phone off .
press power + volume up + volume down for seconds ur phone will start updating , hopfully without a fail .
if u got fail cheer up , there is another solution . just say so and i'll try to confirm u asap !.

Ok, I think I found the update file.
Do I need an external SD or is internal storage ok?
Will it full wipe my data?
Will it relock my bootloader?

Yes I know. But "in honor 7 not relocked" is fine then you write "someone respond this question?" which completely changes the statement and doesn't make sense

Not my phone..... 😂 😂 😂
So, I finally did the update from B120 to B131 and I want to share my experience:
I downloaded the B131 Firmware from the huawei server:
Honor 8 Firmware(FRD-L19, Android 6.0, EMUI 4.1, C432B131, Germany)
http://download-c.huawei.com/download/downloadCenter?downloadId=92124&version=360419&siteCode=de-h
In the zip package there was the update.app and a pdf tutorial how to do the update.
I used the the dialer method
enter:*#*#2846579#*#* -> ProjectMenu -> Software Upgrade -> SDCard Upgrade-> ...
I backed up my data, because in the pdf it says that all user data will be erased.
But that is not true. After the update all my data was still there. Update was successful.
But:
Root is gone,
Bootloader is locked again
So if I open bootloader my data will be erased. So good that I did the backup.

try to reroot using the method from this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-how-to-root-mate-9-decrypt-data-t3569986
you need to flash your stock boot.img thru twrp to remove the superuser you use previously before proceed using superRoot or SuperSU from that thread. and try to look for your stock boot.img maybe you can find it in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/development/stock-boot-img-library-t3573312

Flash back stock boot and you'll be back to stock, as long as you didn't modify any of the other partitions (/system, /vendor, /product). And flash back recovery using adb.
Get stock boot by downloading your firmware from http://hwmt.ru/oth/HWFF/info/view.php?find_model=mha
Then download Huawei Update Extractor https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2433454
Open it up and open update.app which you extracted from update.zip. Right click on BOOT and extract, same with recovery.
Flash back boot using twrp and 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img' to flash back stock boot.

You will have to flash back hw and public zips for your build. There's a folder (hw_init) in /data/ that gets wiped when you format data, it contain apps (system update for example) and the theme engine.
So you will have to flash back TWRP again and decrypt again if you went back to stock, else you won't be able to flash the zips. After that you can flash back stock boot and recovery, and you *should* be able to update via OTA.
Here's a little guide for getting HW and public for your build: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71302827&postcount=627
Also, question: What update are you trying to apply? It might just be that it's not approved by Huawei yet, and that makes it impossible to install using Firmware Finder.
And if you're trying the Dload method, it won't work. Only 2 offline firmwares have been released.
Edit: I should learn to read. So you're trying Dload? Yeah, that won't work.
I guess you could install your current full firmware using Firmware Finder, but for that you'd still need to flash back HW and Public so you can actually see the System Update button.
And that means flashing back TWRP, and flashing to /data requires decrypting, so you'd have to do that as well.

Flashing missing SmartKey feature wihtout factory reset?

Something messed up with my installation so the apps of my "update_full_hw_spcseas.zip" are missing. Seems like there was nothing relevant inside but the SmartKey feature (and maybe the AutoShazam symbol). SmartKey is just missing in the settings.
Is there a way to flash the apk without factory resetting my phone? Found it inside the zip but my naive try to flash it with a TWRP-Template from the internet didn't work (data could not be mounted)...

Tried this erecovery flash several times in the last day but it doesn't seem to work wih my phone. Also don't get the official OTA Updates because my phone is from a different country (used Firmware Finder)...
So is ther another way to flash the firmware again (maybe dload or TWRP)? My "FRD-L09C636B380 FullOTA-MF" Update consists of update.zip, update_data_full_public.zip and update_full_hw_spcseas.zip.

Already tried this yesterday, as well as together with the public one. Phone was bootable in both cases but buggy as ****. TWRP finished flashing them but said something like /data could not be mounted. As far as I know this is because the encryption of /data or something like that.

Flashing the other zips isn't really successful, as well. Other ideas or should I just rollback by dload and update everything again (4th time for me )? Got a B380 TWRP Backup without root if that helps

Did you manage to update your system? I tried everything, always getting an error that the update can't get verified.
I have a rooted, unlocked twrp system on android 7.0 EUMI 5.0 (BLN-L21,Honor 6x)
already tried to flash stock recovery, remove magisk(root), busybox but I still can't update the system.
I would really appreciate the help.

You can do via dload only. Earlier i uswd to update just by flashing the stock recovery but recently on 6X this messed up badly may be volte and hence update failed and then it gave me to download the full firmware with prompt as your data partition is messed up amd needs to be fixed and after downloading the fill OTA update, got success. But then proceeded with debranding the next night

Hey brother, i tried many times to update from B360 to B365 (not full package, only 547MB) reflashing stock B360 recovery, but i always receive errors while recovery is verifying the package. I tried even dload method with .zip archives but i always achieve a failure and it is just boooooring :silly: You know other methods to try? Like adb or terminal emulator commands to update, or else... I cannot figure out how to correctly update my device. I have both B365 packages, FULL or partial OTA update downloaded. Thanks in advance

Cant believe you are facing issues now who helps every new user.
Nope bro. I still recommend to use dload only to flash full firmware. It should be full firmware and not the 547 MB.
Just to be in stock and use one of the app today, I relocked bootloader but then got the prompt as my data partition is damaged and need format. I allowed and then it was only erecovery and bootloader.
Then i unlocked and it went straight to twrp. And from there reboot to system works fine. I have the files and once really needed i will dload but problem with stock is that it doesn't have in-built call recording.
Edit-What is exact firmware BLN-L21CXYZB365?

Well let's say that looks like it's my turn now; Huawei mechanisms are much complicated sometimes, a little detail can let you puzzle an hour like and maybe it's only a joke. My previous device was a Samsung, so except common Android related functions EMUI is a new world for me. Only full firmware will work so, ok. Do i have to reinstall every app, or modify again my whole settings menu if i update using the full firmware package, i suppose..? What do you mean with "use one of the app today"? I didn't relocked bootloader because i thought that stock recovery could be enough. Overall, the risk to encounter an error like yours would be a bore, generally. Which files are you referring to, update files? My full build number is BLN-L21C432B360, I'm trying to update to B365.
However if you need call recording function (me too), there's a working method posted by an user in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-6x/themes/callrecord-t3650864 that enables official call recording function from EMUI, check it. I followed this months ago on my BLN-L21, who had no call record at all by default in my firmware, and it flawlessly worked. I recommend it to you.

I was using Tez app from play store but it didnt work may be because i am rooted with unlocked bootloader and need to bypass the safety check.
For call recording, I am already usimg a zip since debranding and works fine. I have Posted in 5C repository. But we need to be rooted for this with custom recovery.
If you are rooted then can take twrp backup and restore apps if on stock and non rooted then hisuite.
As far as i have tested on my 5c, dload won't wipe data but still i would recommend to have full backup brother.

Surely I'll take a backup pal, i already got burned time ago and now i never do something without doing a nandroid backup bfore Thanks for the link, but i already have the FULL package downloaded OTA stored on my PC, so as suggested even by another user today I'll try again dload method but with full package other than partial one, it shouldn't erase my data and even if it should, I'll have a system image.
Only one thing now; in the folder where OTA was saved on my phone, as habit i found 3 packages; update.zip, update_data_public.zip and update_BLN-L21_hw_eu.zip. In this case, in dload folder on my phone i have to extract all the zips or only the main update.zip and leave the other two zipped?

Extract and use only main update.zip, put all files in dload and it will do.
Have backup but I just tested and flashed full B340 again on my phone and no data loss.

Thanks for the tip brother!
So this evening i tried to use only the extracted files from the main update.zip in dload folder; then, via ProjectMenu, i choose software upgrade and loaded the update after reflashing stock recovery for B360, that i took from your repository thread, since that time ago i didn't made a copy of my stock recovery before flashing TWRP. What i obtained was a soft-brick, i really don't know why on earth because usually it just fails at 5% while verifying the package and stop, it reboots to system... so i flashed again TWRP from fastboot and now i'm restoring my backup made today.
Crap, Huawei just CAN'T make things like updating OTA such difficult! I uninstalled Magisk before doing that, but i think that it fails because i miss a clean stock boot.img. Anyway WTF all these steps for an OTA is foolish.
I provided a guide how I managed to update my rooted device and keep all my stuff, settings and apps and reroot.
Just take a look here:

I already did two successful updates with this method.
If there is a question just ask in that forum.

Sorry to hear you that bro.
I myself flashed the same firmware yesterday to test this without backup (hisuite backup taken on 7th). I did via dload the same firmware and it was successful without any data loss, but yeah, I lost root, call recording feature that I flashed 20 days back.
I was planning to return to full stock because I know OTA will mess up if received on this state.
Not sure what went wrong buddy with your case. If it is due to any of the file in repository, I apologise for it.
