If it's only pic's and music
you mainly concern about
the easiest is to connect
phone to computer (Usb)
See phone in C drive, open relevant
folders.
Copy and paste in temporary folder
pc /laptop.
Otherwise move everything temporarily to Sd card and reset.
If you got like me, + - 187 apps plus app data,
then yes its a big hassle.
I only will factory reset if i have to.
I have 100+ apps .. but , but I dont know if im correct about this but in my one plus 3 when i reseted it apps and data were deleted but not pics and music..i cant seem to find that option on my s8+ ..what if i wipe data from stock recovery ? Or is it the same ? @willcor

Factory resetting your phone WILL delete your pictures and music. There's no way to keep them through a factory reset AFAIK. Your only choice is to follow the earlier posters advice and copy any pictures or music you dont want to lose to your PC first before you wipe, and then copy them back over after.

If you move the pictures and music to your sdcard you'll be safe, the only thing wiped in a reset is internal storage, or you can transfer them to your PC via usb.

Nothing on the sdcard will be wiped with a reset, just internal storage.

Hi everyone. I just got a replacement cappy from AT&T and I want to complete wipe out everything from the memory. Ive done a reset and in start up with no apps, but all my music and pics are still there. I did the startup into recovery menu and chose to clear data, but again, my pics and music and other files are still there.
Can anyone tell me the best way to completely wipe everything off the phone so its like I just got it stock?
Hook up your captivate to your computer and delete everything off the internal SD card.
Have you tried
Settings, privacy, factory data reset.
Out you can use odin and use master clear

I wasnt sure if that was ok because I didnt know if there was any systems files that I had to worry about deleting. If not though, I think I will just do that.

I did do that, but all music, pics and videos are still on the memory.
If you hook up to your pc you will not see system files so you will not be able to delete them
Sent from me
boot into recovery scrol down to delete all user data and select
recovery again and select clear cache

Thanks everyone. I just ended up deleting all files from the phone once I mounted it to my PC. I appreciate all the responses.
So i wanted to go back to my stock Indian ICS firmware that i had backed up using CWM.
I was on Vanilla Rootbox 4.2.1 and wiped data, cleared cache and dalvik cache and then hit restore in CWM
Everything went smooth and booted up where I had backup up with same settings and everything
BUT
I lost all my pictures.ALL OF THEM
I dont know how!
I connected the phone using USB to check on the computer but they are all gone. Just the name of the folders and they are all empty.
Ive heard restoring doesn't touch any of the user files on SD card like pictures and videos.
Now what am I supposed to do?
Please Help!

Buddy, the pics are in .hidden folder is thumbnail stored in Sdcard.

I had purposely kept some pictures in a hidden folder so they dont show up in the gallery.
They are there
also before restoring there were two Clockworkmod folders in my SD card each containing a backup folder.
I deleted one and replaced the other one with my old backup
Did this cause the problem?
i dont think so

Nup buddy. CWM backup doesn't touch any SDcard item. I think there is something you did wrong coz of it all visible files were deleted.
OT: BTW, what kinda Images you store in Hidden folder..?? You naughty..

Hello,
my OnePlus has been accidentally wiped after used OPO Tool Box (please see my post here).
I lost all my data.
When i reboot the phone i had to set the google account and all initial settings. Then Google downloaded all my apps and the contacts list.
Then i tried to recover all my photos and video (maybe about 1000 files) with Dr. Fone, but it didn't found any file related to the date before the wipe.
Why? Isn't this weird?

It isn't weird at all. It's standard for a factory reset to occur when unlocking a bootloader on any device, it's a security measure. The toolkit you used probably should have a warning, but you really should have done your research, this is a very well documented and well known fact.
OK, i see.
I mean it is weird that i can't recover data. We know that the files are not deleted from device, just hidden and flagged to be overwritable on new file creation.
I tried tools like Dr. Fone on Windows and photorec, extundelete, foremost on Linux, but they find only data that is now on the phone, not data that was on phone before factory reset.
Why i can't recover it?

If I'm not mistaken, it isn't just a wipe that occurs, it's a format, and data is much harder to recover after a drive has been formatted. Even if this isn't the case, data recovery is never 100% reliable.
When i unlock the bootloader it just reboots the phone in few seconds, so i'm quite sure it hasn't been a low level format!
So my data is still there, but i can't figure out why i cannot recover it

A format doesn't have to take a lot of time. Honestly, those four data recovery tools are finding your old data for a reason, it's gone.

Yes, I meant are not, my mistake.
I also tried to use this guide: http://dflund.se/~jokke/androidfilerecovery
But i got the same result.
Does the factory reset overwrite tables and partitions information? What does it do exactly?

It formats the data partition, the internal storage, and the caches.

Sorry if i reopen this old post but i need to figure out what is happened.
After the bootloader unlocking operation the phone rebooted itself in few seconds.
So what does exactly the format operation do on a phone memory (in less than about 1 minute)?
As you know, when you delete a file on a disk it is not deleted, but it is simply hidden and flagged as overwritable.
So how it is possible that none of recovery tools can retrieve old data from the phone?
Hi Everyone!
My OPO is softbricked and I would like to unbrick it. I do care about wiping my data, because I would like to keep the whatsapp backup and all my media (pictures, videos etc.). Is there a way to get those files off of my phone to my computer? I can acces my TWRP Recovery. The TWRP backup doesn't include my media. Is an OTG cable my only saviour?
Sincerely,
Flipoflip
EDIT:
My OPO is stuck on the bootscreen, I only see the Cyanogenmod logo, so not sure if softbricked.
Does flashing a ROM or wiping data/factory reset do anything with my media?

But only wiping data won't fix the softbrick right? Don't I need to reflash the ROM, which causes me to lose all my data including media? Or will the wipe, with internal storage excluded, fix the softbrick?

In TWRP go to advanced then file manager browse to where your watsapp media folder is and copy it to a otg drive

in TWRP just wipe davlik cache, system, data, cache
leave the internal storage unchecked if you wish to keep you Whatsapp's data and other user data
after that flash your ROM (cusROM or official as your taste)
should not worry about whatsapp chat coz it would be restored once you install whatsapp after you boot your ROM (if backup presented in your internal)
PS: whatsapp backup folder is in sdcard/Whatsapp/database/ *.db.crypt8
correct me if i'm wrong
and do it with your own risk
hope it help and happy holiday :fingers-crossed:
Hello Guys,
I am using Resurrection Remix with Default Kernel on my One Plus One
My phone has gone into boot loop.
It is stuck on RR logo since past 25mins.
I can access the Internal Storage through TWRP.
I tried the following things :
Wiped : System, Cache & Dalvik cache.
Reinstalled Resurrection Remix 5.7.0 and GApps.
The last thing I did on phone was removed a theme of PowerAmp Player.
As soon as the un-install was finished my phone restarted and was stuck on RR logo.
Dont know what the problem is.
Please can anyone help.
Thanks
Usually a clean flash resolves any such bootloops

If you are worried about your files, don't worry they will not be wiped as they reside in INTERNAL STORAGE.
in layman's term; when you wipe data, all your installed apps are wiped out but all your images, songs, videos, files remain untouched.
