Having issues blocking the OTA "software update" under settings - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

I just bought a GS7 today and successfully root it following this guide - https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...-to-notes-root-install-xposed-unroot-t3411039
Everything worked great without a hitch. I had a slight issue with the OTA downloading when I was on wifi until I got Titanium backup installed and was able to freeze "Software Update 1.5.33", which stopped the download. However, I still have a notification in 'settings' under 'about device', where "manually update" used to be, but its not there anymore since I disabled/froze it, however still "ghosting" with a tick count of 1, believing its still there.
I was hoping NotifyClean would do the trick, but it finds nothing. I'm at a lose. I've attached a couple pics showing what the issue is.
ps - This was the only topic via search I could find regarding this - https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-edge/help/small-issue-blocking-ota-updates-using-t3505860

try unfreezing the software update, reboot into recovery and then wipe cache. reboot the phone and then accept the update (it will fail cause you wiped the cache), then re-freeze the software updater

[Q] Reflashed stock, now stuck on 4.3

I used SHIELD RAM to reflash back to stock (was previously rooted on KitKat) which went fine but I can't convince the Shield to get any updates, it just says "Your system is up to date".
I tried doing a factory reset from Recovery Mode but still nothing. I wondered if something had gone wrong so I ran RAM again and did another full restore but am still having the same problem. Help?
I did reset erase all data in options and that appeared to fix the problem for me. What happened was the OTA update wouldn't download

Thanks eikast, I've just tried that too but the problem remains. If I go to Settings -> About Shield -> System Updates -> Check Now it simply says "Your system is up to date" even though it's running 4.3 (build no JSS15J.01.00.14422.0068)

I'm in the UK. I managed to get some help from Josh at Nvidia and he reset the OTA flag their end and the update popped up instantly. It seems Nvidia add devices which have had the update (or think have had it) to a 'group' which can then prevent those devices seeing it again.

This has happened to me quite a few times... simply use it a few days, it will eventually tell you to update. Other than that, I've never gotten it to manually see the update.
Clearing the data for Google services worked for me.

same problem for me...i live in Italy...i not received the update i still remain on 4.3...can someone help me???

Sprint 915P Note Edge--is your System Update menu missing?

For Sprint Edge only--please take a look at Settings, scroll down to "About Device". Just above it, is it "Activate this device" or "System update"?
If you see "Activate this device", take a look at the two attached images. According to Sprint, you should have "System update". It is where you perform the PRL and profile updates.
Pages 3 and 4
http://support.sprint.com/support/t...g_List_Samsung_Galaxy_Notereg_Edge/56117-1389
There is a menu item under Settings > About device > System updates, but it's not the same thing.
If your System update is missing: Are you rooted? Have you disabled/frozen any apps? Running Xposed? I'm trying to isolate the problem.
If your System updates is NOT missing--Are you rooted?
BTW, I did a factory reset (I'm using my own rooted/deodexed stock ROM), and the menu is still not there. I allowed Sprint Zone and Sprint ID to install all the junk, still no joy.
Thanks.

I did some more testing. My factory reset was with Xposed framework, Better Battery Status, and a few other things installed. I tried a few other things:
This problem has to be related to something that got installed into /system.
Case 1: Factory reset with Xposed, Better Battery Status, and a few other items intact: No System update menu
Case 2: Disable Xposed (removed framework): Still no System update menu
Case 3: Flash the same rooted deodexed ROM with nothing else added: System update menu is there.
Okay.... I did more testing.
1) I re-flashed the stock rooted ROM. It went through the activation, Sprint Zone, Sprint ID, and bloat installation. Afterwards, System update was there (as before).
2) Restored my /data partition over what I just did above, then reinstalled Xposed, Better Battery Status, GSam Battery, AppOps Xposed, had SuperSU update the binary, and rebooted. System update is still there.
(All the Sprint bloat was gone because my /data backup overwrote what was installed in step 1)
Background: When I first noticed that the menu was missing, my phone had never previously went through the formal activation process. I had the phone on WiFi only for a couple of weeks while I rooted, and set up my apps. When I called Sprint, I had to use the "Activate this phone" menu to pull down the provision.
So now, my theory is that, during the initial setup/activation/Sprint Zone/Sprint ID install process, one of those steps inserts the menu item into Settings. Unless that is properly completed, the System update won't be there.
i'm rooted only with nothing else installed and have the "system update" tab.
Rooted factory rom, have menu
If I run "check updates now" btw, I froze everything Sprint
I made an interesting finding after all my testing. When I open Wanam, the Update system menu goes away on the next reboot. At that point, I have to restore from Nandroid to get the menu entry back.
I'm running Wanam, mine stays

So the plot thickens. I restored the phone to a state where the menu is there. I learned that so long as I do not open Wanam, the menu stays. To test, I uninstalled Wanam via Xposed, rebooted, reinstalled Wanam, rebooted, and opened Wanam. Bam--the menu disappears. Wanam does/writes something to the /system partition on opening that makes my menu disappears.
It's strange that yours is fine. I'm totally lost now.
For you who have the missing menu, are you running Wanam? If you can restore to factory state (will need to flash the ROM, not just wipe) and duplicate my findings?

I would guess it depends on what you are selecting in Wanam. I've noticed most of Wanam doesn't work with my Edge like volume warning, etc etc. Themers don't work either. Development will come....
If you need to update PRL, etc use galaxy tools

I too, thought that the specific Wanam settings might be the cause. When I (above post) uninstalled and reinstalled Wanam, all it took was to launch Wanam for the menu item to disappear. I then tried toggling all the settings that may have a bearing, but no joy. Once it's gone, it's gone.

Are you using the T-Mobile Edge on Sprint's network? If yes, how did you get the PRL update menu to show up in the first place?
I didn't think the T-Mobile Edge has CDMA radio but I thought I read that people are running Note 4 on Sprint.

No, sorry for the confusion. I am running my 915T on the TMo network.
When I read the post about the update settings missing I went to check mine since I have been modding my phone as well.
So, is there a fix?
I too had this problem. I've since re flashed the phone and not installed winam. The missing menu option is there for me now. Thank you to the OP for testing and sharing.
The only reason I noticed this is because I can only seem to get 3g now, and figured it was a PRL issue.

D801-20G OTA Update from t-mobile..

I got this update a few days ago on my rooted Tmobile G2. Applying the update bricked my phone, as it was stuck in a recovery boot loop. Had to use this:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ge...ricked-lg-g2-stuck-twrp-no-download-mode.html
to get it unstuck. Also, I tried the LG Support Tool to pull the update, but it was trying to download a 1.7gig update. I cancelled it before the install process in the fear that it would bork my phone.
Has anyone gotten the update to install successfully on their phone? (rooted)
I got the update but didn't run it. I learned my lesson last time. I'd love to know what it brings and how to install it though.

I'm there but can't figure out how to type in terminal command, can you help me out with this? I'm stuck in the recovery boot loop.
*EDIT* nevermind I figured it out after a factory reset though UGH!
I also got the update notification. I deleted 213MB upgrade file in cashe. It was in the root of cashe folder not in /cashe/foa/. I still get the stupid upgrade notification. How can we kill it? I have Titanium backup but software MUC is not an option on our phones.
OK found how to turn it off. Long press the update, App Info pops up, uncheck show notifications. Clear cashe and then reboot.
You can use stomproot (brute force method) to root this OTA. towelroot won't work. Before applying OTA, make sure custom recovery is replaced with stock recovery. Otherwise you will end up in boot loop.

Can confirm this works...thanks...autorec still works as well
If I have not installed a custom recovery, but just rooted the phone with AutoRec, will it soft brick my phone? Since I don't have TWRP or CWM, I would have no way to enter adb shell. So, it sounds like if I soft brick it, I'd have to restore factory settings to get it to boot, right? Are there any significant improvements to the 20g versus the 20e? Thanks.
I got this this morning and installed it...no issues whatsoever. Not sure what its for, but I got it.
Im stock unrooted.
I ended up going with the LG support tool method and installed the update (1.7gigs)...not really sure what the changed though. Root was lost, but I used Stump Root to get it back and everything is normal again. If anyone has the list of changes, plz post

Where exactly do I "long press the update? I deleted the update file from cache but can't find this App Info popup menu. Is it within the file explorer or the settings menu?

As long as you deleted the update you can safely press the install button...it may or may not actually power off...but if it doesn't just reboot after pressing and the notification will be gone...also to prevent it from downloading in the future you can dial 3845#*80X# and click wlan test then ota setting and click disable...you can re-enable by going through the same process and pressing enable...works for most variants
Mine tried to update: it rebooted, said it was installing while showing a progress bar and then it stopped and restarted. Nothing changed.
Does anyone know what this update is? Preliminary to the lollipop update?
Any idea why my nearly stock system didn't take the update. I am rooted with towel root and several apps disabled and frozen with Titanium.
Thanks
Gilon
you press and hold on the update in the notification bar and app info will popup.

Same here, just rooted, no custom recovery and went through the update process. Completed update, still on e not upgraded to g
Plugged into LG Mobile Support Tool and updated that way, ran STUMPROOT and bruteforced. Rebooted and had root ^_^ Updated SuperSU binaries and rebooted once more and ran AutoRec. Now time to update everything again and remove the bloat they put back on.
Also to find the dialer code to update touch software, knock on isn't working. :silly:

From what I saw on androidpolice it includes in-flight wifi stuff and some patches. Probably blocking some of the older rooting methods
Took the update last night, i was rooted with stock recovery but it went through just fine. Now when i try to root via StumpRoot it says my device is rooted before i even do anything. I don't have root access though.
Anyone else experience this problem? I've already tried a factory reset but still no-go.
this "update" seems absolutely useless. however, it could be nice to get a flashable radio from it.

Small issue after blocking ota updates using titanium backup

I flashed the latest firmware with ODIN (N915TUVS2DPG2_N915TTMB2DPG2_TMB.zip). Rooted and working well. Began getting a firmware update message to install the same firmware. Asked to install now or later. Actually tried to install it and it just failed and went back to normal. A couple days later it would pop up again.
Using titanium, I froze the following:
Security policy updates 4.1.46
Software update 1.5.04
Software update 3.1.12
I then wiped my cache only in TWRP. I no longer get the firmware download message, however I get one minor notification that shows up when I go to the phones "settings". Notification says "Software updates. Tap here to update the firmware to the latest version and use the latest features." If you tap it, it does nothing. I can close it but it will show up again. It also shows up under "About" in the device settings. It doesn't seem to be affecting anything so far. Just a minor annoyance. Not clear why it is happening at all.
I am on the T-mobile version of firmware. Anyone else experiencing this? Thank you.

Could be because Samsung likes rat ware.
The security could be getting used to aid in O/S updates.
Given that you've frozen them and they could be tied together .............

I have noticed that things "frozen" by Ti backup still can have an effect.
Example I run Nova Launcher and lock down Samsung's launcher.
I then start having weird problems including restarts.
Since I'm rooted, I back up the system and remove the Samsung launcher.
Much better.

SafetyNet fails although the phone is completely stock

Hey guys,
I'm in weird situation. I was debating with myself for a long time whether to unlock the BL or not (Verizon) and decided not to - because I want things to just work.
So I left the system as is and funny as it sound - Android Pay is not working, although I didn't change anything with the phone. It's completely stock, no BL unlock, no flashing no nothing. The only thing I did do was to flash an OTA.
Any thought? Any idea how to fix?
SafetyNet Helper shows "CTS profile match: false".
Another weird issues I'm having that might be related:
ֿIf I clear Data for Android Pay I get "MTP Host has stopped" message (force close message). Then - I can't charge the phone and I need to restart it.
After restarting though - The system goes back to the previous version (October patch)! That's the one that was before the OTA. Then I get the android upgrade notification (for November, the version I was on when it all started).
SUPER WEIRD!

Tried that. Also deleting data. It's unrelated because the SafetyNet doesn't work.
Anyway, I flashed a factory image and It works now.
