Does Tmobile WiFi calling still work on a rooted phone? - T-Mobile LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I am expecting delivery of my G5 soon. I would like to root and run TWRP and have seen threads for how to that.
My question: Does Tmobile WiFi calling continue to work after installing TWRP and rooting your phone? I would assume it does. I am just looking for confirmation.
Does anything else stop working once your root your Tmobile phone?
Thanks!

My TMobile G5 has been rooted and I use wifi calling often, with excellent results. Everything else works fine too, rooting has not broken anything I use. However, if you plan to use Android Pay you should check into the threads discussing that app as rooting will cause issues with its use.

Thanks rbradmag! Great! Glad to get the first hand account.
Curiously, have you tried Tmobile WiFi calling on any of the customer roms? I am unlikely to go custom out-of-the-gate, but am using resurrection remix on my Xperia Z Ultra and like it a lot. The Xperia Z Ultra does not support WiFi calling on stock or custom.

Sorry, I've never had anything but stock on this phone - reliance on wifi calling being a significant reason I don't go custom.

[Q] Thinking about Picking up an M8

I have really only used moto phones in the past so bear with me.
1) Will I be able to ROM the M8?
2) What is the difficulty in ROMing the phone compared to a Moto w/ safestrap?
3) Is there an app similar to moto hotspot or can HTC phones only tether? Can it be unlocked?
4) How will the 3 above questions compare / contrast to an S5?
Thanks!
-Justin
You can't ROM the M8 yet as the boot loader isn't unlocked.
Don't really understand #3 but there is a Verizon hotspot app. And by unlocked do you mean to use on other carriers?
Can't really answer #4 because the S5 isn't out yet

You can Rom the Moto Phones with locked bootloaders, just with ROMs that are derived from the factory one, no CM etc. So the M8 will be similar in this regard? On another forum someone was telling me the selling point over the S5 was that the bootloader will be unlocked. So I guess this probably requires a GPE phone then, and isn't much of a selling point for me since I cant use a GPE phone on verizon...
By unlocked I mean free hotspot, the moto phones come with a motorolla hotspot which is quite easy to hack / unlock for use (the hotspot does not work otherwise without paying for it).
Some people do have their hands on the S5, but I guess I can assume it would be locked down similar to the S4. Are Samsung phones locked down any differently than the HTC Phones or are all companies locking the bootloader on verizon phones now?
Thanks,
Justin.

1) Eventually

Yes, there's a hotspot app. The hotspot app isn't anything unique to any given manufacturer. It's a part of the Android OS.
The question is, can you use it or not without paying. If you don't have unlimited data it shouldn't cost you anything. If you have unlimited data you have to pay as of right now. There isn't any hack to disable the Verizon check at this time. Won't be until we get access to the system partition.

Interesting, again coming from motorolla:
Teathering = single device can connect.
Wifi hotspot = multiple devices can connect.
But that's the way it has been in the past with my moto phones so please forgive me since I guess this has changed.

Is the hotspot app called Mobile hotspot?
On my motorolla with root I can use dSQLiteManager and flip a bit in the com.motorolla.android.providers.settings DB and enable the free hotspot. If I lose this ability with HTC M8 I guess I will have to look into another motorolla phone. Or at least I will have to hold off for now.
It's the same app as Moto has. It's an Android thing. And, yes, it's called Mobile Hotspot. All phones I've had up until now were Motos. It's the same thing.
However, like I said before, there is no hack for it yet. One of the first things I did when we got root was check for the entitlement check thing using sqlite and that entry isn't there anymore. From what I can find, it sounds like the newer Moto phones don't have it either. I did come across a hack for the M7 which involves editing an xml file but haven't tried it. My guess is you'd have to reboot to get it to take effect and given the way root works on this phone, the change wouldn't stick after you rebooted the phone.
USB tethering works fine though. However, if the hotspot is a must for you, you better wait or else plan on paying for it, at least for a while.

I mostly use it with my Android Nook HD+, so I don't think USB tether would work, but that's not worth $30 a month to simply use a larger screen. I would assume if there is no hack for the M7 their probably will not be for the M8 then. Thanks for everyones help.
There is one for the M7.

Well, that might or might not help. If the Nook can't see an adhoc network, it's no good in this case. I have a Xoom that wouldn't see one when it was stock. A lot of devices require infrastructure mode which the hotspot is. The Nook may or may not support adhoc. But like I said, some devices require it (infrastructure). I have a laptop that doesn't work with adhoc mode. So, it's not just related to mobile devices.

[Q] WiFi calling on a&tt varient.

Hey guys. I have become increasingly frustrated with having no way to root this phone coming from a nexus in favor of battery life.
I was wondering if getting an ATT version and using it on t-mo towers is a good option seeing as that one is rootable. The thing I'd like to keep is WiFi calling as my office is a dead zone. Is the WiFi calling part of the radio? Is it hard ware specific? Just wanting some light shed on this issue. Thanks.
Why not just root? It is possible and fairly painless.

I've been scared by the downgrade process and seeing multiple people have bricked devices. I've also seen two different ways of doing it. I can't seem to find this TOT method everyone says works great and the other method with the kdz seems dangerous at best. Maybe you could share with me the safest way to go about getting root?
Not sure how they bricked, but if you follow the directions you'll be fine. The TOT method is the way to go imo. I downgraded, rooted, flashed recovery, rom and SuperSU in less than 15 minutes. Well worth it. Here's the link to the TOT method. Just scroll down til you see it.

I was in a similar situation. I rooted, flashed this t-mobile stock debloated rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2688981
Make sure to flash a D800 kernel for 4.4.2 and you should be good to go. The rom contains a t-mobile D801 kernel and if you simply flash the rom, you won't be able to boot into it and the phone will be softbricked.
I was able to use Wifi-calling after doing all of the above on an AT&T LG G2. I was also able to use t-mobile LTE so looks like the G2 is pretty flexible.

You can't use WiFi calling with an AT&T or any other SIM. WiFi calling (a necessity for me here in this valley with horrid coverage, but right over the in L.A. signal is fantastic)) is a proprietary, locked and restricted feature exclusive to (some) T-Mo branded devices with T-Mo kernels and T-Mo SIMS. There is no way around this.
In fact, I just read that TMOUS WiFi calling will finally be included in iOS 8 for T-Mo branded iPhones. My wife and her iPhone 5 has to stand in the front yard in order to take calls without dropping. I just laugh, but she has to have her iPhone.

[Q] Enabling VoLTE

I have a Droid Maxx on Verizon running the latest ota update (23.3.24), rooted, with TWRP installed. I enabled HD Calling (VoLTE) through Verizon's website, but cannot find an option in my phone's settings to enable it as was suggested in some comments I read on other sites. Am I missing something?
It should look like this, under Mobile Network Settings:
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Free mobile app
I believe that you have to restart the phone after activating the feature on your line.
Yeah once I activated the feature on Verizon wireless I had to turn the phone off for a few mins then back on and it was there,,,a simple reboot doesnt work.

Which software version do you have? There is no root available for Maxx, Ultra, or Mini phones on 4.4.4.

I was on an older software version and used a utility called Sunshine which was created by some of the devs who post in this forum. I just checked their website and it indicates that support for bootloader unlock for Verizon users on 4.4.4 will come in the next update to their utility. There's a $25 fee, but after your bootloader is unlocked, it will likely remain that way through future ota updates. After your bootloader is unlocked, you can install an alternate recovery like TWRP which will auto detect whether you have root upon exiting the recovery and ask if you want to install it or not.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I followed your suggestions, but still don't have an option to enable VoLTE on the device itself.
I left my phone off for 20+ minutes (several times) but the option to enable VoLTE (HD voice) was still not present under mobile network settings after powering on. I also performed a factory reset (no luck), wiped everything in TWRP and reinstalled the 23.3.24 fxz file using RSD Lite (no luck), and disabled and re-enabled HD voice through the Verizon website (still no luck).
Does anyone else have any thoughts or suggestions? I'm at a loss.
I have what may be a dumb question. I have a rooted, unlocked droid maxx on 4.4.4. I would like to get the latest update so that I can enable advanced calling on my phone. Can I download the update somewhere? My phone is set to not download updates automatically. Thanks.
For those who have been using Volte consistently since the update what has been your user experience? I was part of the soak and used it for only a week before disabling it. I found that in areas with weak 4g coverage the call would break up or I would loose the call all together.
My speaker has a crackling sound to it since enabling volte but other than that I haven't had much time with it in rough service areas to tell but I just got back to North Dakota for work so I'll get a crash course in that soon haha

I had the same issue. I found that it was a common occurrence in a weak 4g area. When it was really bad I would cut in and out before finally dropping the call. When I was in a strong 4g area the call was crystal clear.

There may be other reasons to stick with 21.11.21 but concerns over VoLTE shouldn't be one. Even before you can use VoLTE with the phone you have to get Verizon to enable it on your account either by calling them or your account page on their website. At least I did when it came out and I assume that's still the case. Once it's enabled on your account the option to turn it on/off in the phone should show up in the settings. So if that's the only thing holding you back then I'd say go for it.

What other downsides?
I am hearing about bugs & of course unlock patch that would stop Sunshine if a root method is ever found.

I haven't encountered or heard of any bugs with 23.3.24, really. There's a thread in the other forum about lost features, but other than that and VoLTE I haven't noticed any differences from 21.11.21.
I guess there's always a risk of an root exploit being found and released for an older version after upgrading, but I'm not sure how likely that is to happen at this point. I don't think there's been a whiff of one on 21.11.21 or later. If one does come out it might end up working on 23.3.24 anyway since they are both 4.4.4 based.
With all the changes coming with Lollipop you might have better luck eventually getting an exploit for that version.
So I guess if you are perfectly content with 21.11.21 and aren't interested in VoLTE then there probably isn't much of a reason to upgrade. On the other hand, if you do upgrade I speculate that it won't impact your ability to get root/unlocked bootloader down the road if one happens to fall out of the sky. But that's just my opinion.

A couple of things that may help you out on the VoLTE option, including bringing back HD Voice calling and Video Calling. Same thing happened to me on the new build. I went into the the *#*#4636#*#* Phone information menu and ensured that VoLTE Provisioned and other options are turned on. For me I need to decline the HD feature and re-enable...for you probably a call to Verizon. Takes just a few moment to do and didnt have to reboot. Viola' HD Voice and Video Calling were back. Good luck

I never had such problems even with old firmware versions. I know that some people have them, but it looks like these issues are location dependent, so I wouldn't expect updates to fix it.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro Verizon hotspot?

Hi, I'm looking at buying a unlocked xcover pro and using it on the Verizon network. I can't really find much info on this phone. It looks like they are 100% unlocked(not sure on the Verizon variant) and you can unlock the bootloader right from settings.
My question/dilemma is will Verizon block my hotspot on the device as I do not pay for the subscription. I am on the old unlimited grandfather plan and have been using the hotspot for wifi for years as I travel a lot for work.
I'd also like to know if it's possible to install a custom Rom on this, and if so which one? I've been looking but there's nothing I can find specific to this phone and I'm pretty inexperienced with this stuff.
I currently use a verizon lg v20 that has been unlocked with custom Rom/firmware and I was able to get around the subscription hotspot lock with it.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Small world. I am also considering the Xcover Pro and currently running the V20 with a custom ROM.
Looking forward to replies to this post.

I just got the phone today....got it powered on, turned on hotspot right away. It seemed to be working fine. Got a bunch of apps installed and stuff and was streaming videos on my laptop. After a good hour or so I got disconnected. Re-connected and got the verizon hotspot verification error. Well ****....
Went to check out how to unlock the bootloader and the OEM unlock option is missing in the dev options like everywhere online says it will be.
Had to run to town. now im back and just went to try hopspot again and its been working a good 20 minutes or so. Im typing this on my laptop that is connected to the hotspot, but im pretty sure I will get knocked off again. Not sure what to do now.
Were you ever able to get the hotspot working?

Yeah. Been using this for about a month now. Have not updated the OS on it yet. Only had the issue 1 time where it asked for a Verizon subscription and then I rebooted a few times and has been working since. I use it every day.
I dont know what would happen if I updated the OS on it, but I'm not going to try it. Hope this helps any1 looking to buy one of these. I really like the phone.
