Dumb question alert.
I know the phone isn't out yet but coming from a unlocked/rooted Z5P (and I haven't really caught up with their more recent devices), how much chance is there that there will be a chance of unlocking and/or rooting the XZP without the whole losing TA partition song and dance?
Since you can't use the TA backup tool on Nougat and there's no MM fw on Sony XZ Premium there's no chance.
With no backup there's no way to restore the keys and therefore no way to get warranty back by restoring/relocking.
as someone who hasn't owned a sony device before but is looking into the xz premium what does the TA partition do?
If I would like to unlock the bootloader for a custom rom installation does that mean I lose the 960 fps slow mo? If I do is there anyway to undo it?

TA partition contains DRM keys which is needed for some sony features such as better low light quality etc.
These DRM keys are unique and you cannot use someone elses DRM keys, that will brick the device.
There's a DRM-fix that restores this but it doesn't restore the units keys, they are forever gone unless you manage to back them up.
Even if you backed them up, restoring them would relock bootloader and you loose root. I personally don't care, I prioritize root over anything.
No, you don't lose slow-mo, even if the camera would get weird it would get fixed with DRM-fix anyway so no worries.
I hope there is a way to circumvent the security and get a safe unlocked root for XZ Premium.
I'm so hyped for my pre-order, and root would be epic to say the least.

Circumvent what? It's already safe and very easy. You just have to do a personal decision if you want to lose your warranty and get root.
You can't have both. You either unlock, get root and lose warranty or you stay locked without root.

I've owned more than one Sony in my time, and I had to return one for service. It was unlocked and rooted. All I did was throw the stock ROM back on it and send it in. Came back fixed and no $ needed. YMMV
I am sure we'll have the same flexibility as other devices... just give it some time.

I've been lucky to get my Z5P repaired (battery replacement) without cost even though I sent it in with an unlocked bootloader too. However I really would prefer to have a backed up TA this time around since on 2 previous occasions (on my Z2 and Z5P), I've been rather unlucky with my timing and (at that time) new exploits were found to backup the TA only a week after I had unlocked my bootloader. :silly:
You guys think there will be a way to back up the TA partition. I really wanna root the device. But chances are getting minimum nowadays. :/

It'll happen, but it could be two weeks or 6 months... depends on when the phone starts selling and some devs buy it. When in doubt, a bounty might be in order.

Not for a while. Considering the TAbackupv2 tool doesn't have support for Nougat and that was a while ago...
Unless someone else makes a new tool.

Yea, because the XZ had MM fw but the XZs and XZ-Premium doesn't.
I was actually thinking of flashing a MM fw onto my XZs just to try but later just unlocked/rooted since I will be moving to premium anyway.
But then again I personally don't care for the keys. If my phone breaks I just get a new one because I could never use the phone again if it breaks and I get it back "fixed", it would bother me so much.
Anyway, let's hope for the people that do want to save their keys someone finds a way sooner than later.

Has anyone tried flashing the XZ marshmallow onto the XZ premium? Maybe it's possible with some kind of hack considering that the premium is merely a beefed up version of the XZ vanilla.

That's not how it works. That's not how it works at all. XZ Premium is totally different from the vanilla XZ, and even if it had the same chipset you still wouldn't be able to flash anything from another phone.

...As I'm sure many others like me will visit this forum, read guide disclaimers, and still ask themselves "is it really true??"
If we accept the latest OTA (186.43.15) WITHOUT unlocking the bootloader, we are screwed. There is absolutely, positively, nothing that can be done (hacking, version rollback, etc.) with the phone forever. The bootloader has been locked and we're stuck with what we've got. No way to unlock it now.
So, is it really true? Please say it ain't so.
Yes, it is true, at least with the Motopocalypse method. There are other ways to bootloader unlock phones such as Sunshine, but I think that only supports newer Motorola devices.
http://theroot.ninja/
Also, you have to be rooted. If Towelroot doesn't work on the latest OTA (no idea if it does or not) then you'd have to wait for a new exploit.
Thanks for the reply.
What's most frustrating about this is that I knew it was coming, I knew the bootloader was going to be locked by the next OTA but I was too nervous to unlock the bootloader and possibly brick my wifes phone in the process. She would be pissed.
The system update notifier kept bugging her and I kept telling her to not to do it and eventually she just she went ahead with it. Ugh.

Forget another bootloader unlock exploit. That was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. As for root, well, there might be, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Of course, that's what we all said when the first KK OTA came out and look what they gave us - Towelroot AND bootloader unlock, but the bootloader unlock was a mistake - they accidentally reverted part of the code back to the original exploit code. So, that was a mistake on Moto's part.
But, this latest OTA is the last OTA for this phone. No more updates from Moto so don't expect the bootloader exploit to show up again.

That's what I was afraid of. Same thing happened on my Droid X once updated to the last build of 2.3.4
I guess the bottom line is this: I don't care that much about the final KK build as much as I care about wifi hotspot tethering. That's really what I'm after. After her phone was updated to KK from JB it killed the tethering app that we were using. So my only recourse was to flash the phone back to JB. But I just didn't have the time to mess with it, plus it's my wife's phone and I didn't want to risk bricking it.
Near as I can tell, after quite a bit of searching, I don't have any way to fix tethering with this latest build. I'll ask the question in the Q&A section.

Exactly what version of KK is she on? If she's still on 183.46.10, then that allows the bootloader to be unlocked which will then allow you to root it and then apply a tethering hack.
If, however, you are on 183.46.14 or 183.46.15, then yes, you are hosed and cannot revert back to 183.46.10 or JB.

She actually hasn't been happy with her XT926, so I think I might just buy a used phone of the same generation and mod it. If successful, we'll just swap the hacked one onto her account. I'm thinking Galaxy S3? I'd be curious to know what the "most hackable" phone of that generation is (JB or early KK)? Or should I post that question in the XDA General? I've searched and haven't found that question asked.

If you accept the OTA update, it is highly unlikely you will be able to achieve root or S-OFF.
Root or S-off?
The simple answer is you should never wait. Bird in hand is better than a possible one in the bush.

There's no guarantee you'll be able to do it in the future. More than likely HTC has plugged the hole that Sunshine exploited on previous versions of the OS. There maybe another version of Sunshine waiting in the wings but I wouldn't count on it. Jcase (one of the 2 devs who came up with Sunshine) tweeted last week that if you want to s-off, better do it before the lollipop update. That's about all he said about it so I don't know if that means you're out of luck if you don't or not. It could be they have another version that they're holding back until the update is rolled out but they have no way of knowing if it will work for sure on official lollipop since nobody has received it yet. Or it could be that they've gotten a leaked version somehow and can't find a way in. Whatever the case, If you want s-off I would suggest you heed his warning and get it now while/if you can.

There is no promise that a new exploit will be found. There isn't always someone doing the work to find an exploit. A great example is the SGS3 which after its last OTA updated was locked down tight and nobody ever bothered to find an exploit for it, and that's how it's been ever since. Sunshine and root are extremely low risk. I'd definitely do it just like Dottat suggested. The guy knows his stuff and wouldn't give you errant advice.

Maybe...but probably not.
That's one of the feature protected by DRM keys and its code is wiped as soon as you unlock bootloader.
Maybe if you can and know how to extract it from rooted device but it will still be protected by Sony DRM protection.

You should tell then that you are trying to find someone who could do that for you.
That's advanced cracking and hacking and there are only few guys here in XDA who could do something like that...
Try to contact those guys who built DRM recovery for users who unlocked bootloader without backup it first, maybe they could help you.
But be aware that all those functions are protected by patents.
Check XDA policy about that...

Pretty sure it's still 5.0. I don't think the S5 will be getting any more updates, it's at the end of its software cycle since 5.0, this update was only released for the stagefright fix.

No. Verizon's own custom OE1 is the reason that it's not rootable. Once you have the OE1 Kernel or higher, you cannot root unless they find another exploit. I doubt they will considering it's an older phone that's already being phased out in terms of support.

Take it back. You have a "new" phone that basically has no support for it anymore. If you have something to use currently other than the S5, I'd consider waiting till the new Google Nexus 5 or 6 2015 edition coming out this year. That should have root and an unlocked bootloader (Google wouldn't stand for Verizon locking down their phone).

You would have to find a phone you like, go to that forum, and check. I believe any phone with an unlocked bootloader can always be rooted? And I'm pretty sure the Google nexus 5/6 (the old ones) will always be rootable.
I'm jumping ship from Samsung (I wanted to move to the Note at one point, but Samsung screwed up big time with their phones trying to make it like an iPhone, and with Samsung/Verizon in bed with locking up root/bootloader).

There's a search bar at the top of XDA where you can enter a device. It also allows you to specify which carrier as well. This is from the M9 forum. Says you need a JAVA card which is expensive, but it unlocks the phone/allows root. You can also donate (usually $20-60) users to do it for you:

I have no idea about the M8, seems to be the same, have to have S-OFF or whatever the heck that means. Do research yourself if you want the phone.
I don't think I saw anyone ask this yet...
If I'm currently rooted with OE1, can i take this update and stay rooted? or will i loose root and not be able to get root again?
thanks

Follow the instructions in muniz_ri's thread. He hasn't released the deodexed version though. You should never take ota when rooted, and you should actually have it disabled as soon as you root. One user reported that they ota updated without losing root, but I'd never recommend it.
There is no benefit in disabling it. You have to authorize any update, so it cannot overwrite it on its own. The only reason to disable it is the popup after an update comes out which can be stopped by deleting the update.zip then having the install fail.
Two or three updates ago, I lost the ability to rotate my screen unless an app forces it to rotate, now with this update my phone no longer reads sd cards, and in fact boot loops if there is one inserted. I've done a lot of searching, both when the initial problem manifested, and now with the new problem, but haven't seen anyone with a fix. Any suggestions?
Verizon sm-g900v, latest update g900vvru2bog5,
Hi guys
I recently acquired an Xperia XZ, and ive had a few phones in my time, predominantly HTC, and Samsung.
My phone is 3UK branded, and i can see from the XperiFirm that UK custom is available to flash (3UK are terribly slow at updating their handsets)
Now i understand flashtool isnt ready yet for 7.0, but, is there anything stopping me from using the Customized UK at all? Does it de-brand the phone? wold be nice to remove all the bloatware, whilst remaining unrooted (as yes i use Android Pay and Pokemon Go lol)
Any advice would be great!
Thanks

Flash the customised UK one with flashtool then you will get the OTA.
I am with 3UK as well, but I can hang on for the update....

There will be no carrier stuff on the FTF, but there is not much on the 3 UK one anyway.
There is no risk of anything like losing DRM as that can only happen if you unlock the bootloader

Thanks. I guess I will just flash the Central Europe firmware then. why is everyone using the UK one, any advantage?
