I wanted to note down this "fix" for this problem in the hopes it helps anyone else with similar behavior either on Total Wireless or other carriers. I'm unsure if it's widespread and I'm unsure if it affects multiple carriers but it is really annoying.
The Problem:
Under Settings > About Phone > Status > Service State shows disconnected and Network shows Unavailable. I'll most often notice this because I'll go to send a text and it will show network disconnected, unable to send text message please try again later. When this happens it has some interesting symptoms; outbound calls work (didn't test inbound), data works, texts in/out don't work and extreme battery drain occurs due to cell standby (last night I was at 2300mah used for cell standby despite calls/data working).
The Fix:
Call someone, literally anyone, the call should complete. You'll begin receiving texts and under Settings > About Phone > Status > Service State shows connected and Network shows Verizon Wireless.
The (potential) cause:
Changing your network mode. Say if you changed from LTE/CDMA to GLOBAL in your mobile network settings.
I have been able to do any testing outside my own device and network. If this works for you note it in the comments with your phone and carrier.

Hi All,
I would like your assistance with something. All it's going to take is a call to you network provider after a quick test with your phone.
The Problem:
Do you miss calls even if the phone has full signal and may even be in your hand? If the answer is yes and you are on any network other than Vodafone, then you are experiencing my frustration. It's due to the networks not prioritising voice calls over data calls when there is an active 2G/GPRS connection. This is not related to the handset at all it's network-side.
The Test:
1. Turn your phone to GSM mode. For my phone it's Settings > Wireless & Network > Mobile Network > Network Mode
2. Start a data connection
3. Use an app that is data intensive e.g. Google Maps
4. Use another phone to call your phone
If I am right, due to a lack of Dual Transfer Mode capability, your phone will bounce the call.
The Solution:
The only solution is for you to call your network and complain. YOU PAY FOR THE SERVICE SO THEY SHOULD PROVIDE IT.
My network is Orange and they say they are looking into it but I have no confidence in them as they say they have never experienced this. It's been the same since I had a Nokia N95 but smart phones these days are so much more data intensive so the problem is greater.
Thanks for you time.
On all the phones I've had with Voda and O2, if I'm using data and get a call, my net connection drops and I get the call.
Hi, I've been trying to connect my captivate to my network's WAP connection but not been able so far.
My Captivate's info:
Baseband Version: I897UCJH7 (the stock version)
Kernel Version: Voodoo Lagfix
Rooted
I bought it unlocked in the US, inserted my sim card (Wap was working in 3G on my previous Nokia N95), I configured the APN info to the Captivate correctly, then tryed to open a site with no luck. No internet and no MMS.
I started investigating and found that the Network operators menu won't let me choose any of the local networks as a "Default Setup" button is greyed out. I thought this must be an other AT&T lock and tryed to solve this by rooting the phone as I had no idea what that is for but it didn't help.
Ancel's 3G Network works in 2100Mhz. In the about section Mobile network type goes from UMTS to EDGE to HDSPA all the time, Service State "In service" and Mobile Network State from connecting to disconnected all the time.
When I start sending a MMS, Mobile Network State goes to "connected", the phone displays a little 3G icon with two grey arrows at the top of the screen, but the MMS never sends. The icon eventually goes away, the Mobile Network State goes back to disconnected and connecting and the message never gets "sent".
Can anyone help me? Thank you.
Javier.
I am posting this as a new thread as my reply on a similar thread got lost or ignored and I would really appreciate inputs :
Randomly at times when I try to register on network manually (MTNL Dolphin 3G - Mumbai). Unrooted MB865 ver 2.3.6 & updated on 18th May 2012 to System Ver 55.28.37.MB865.AsiaRetail.en03. If I keep the setting as Automatic in Type of Network & Operator it functions fine fluctuating between Dolphin for local access & CellOne on roaming access in the same area based on cell tower connection the phone registers on alternating between "E" & "H" automatically based on cell mast direction proximity, however if I select 3G only and uncheck automatic for operator then the phone searches for signal for a very long time and fails to show any operator saying "no connection available" & sometimes when "Dolphin" network does appear and try to select manually get the error as "this sim card does not allow connection to this network". I did complain with the service provider and they were supposed to get back to me after checking in their switchboard exchange where I also provided them my SIM number in addition to my cellphone number(no response). Also as is case with poor service of all Indian cell network providers even in urban cities, also face random peculiar issue of call not being received inspite of signal available on the phone & network asking me to recheck the number I have dialled while placing outgoing calls though it is ok and signal is sufficient. Also "Network Speed Booster" app looks like a lot of bull (any other good apps??)
I needed to know using the secret Menu *#*#4636#*#* for 3G GSM service which kind of network I should ideally select for best results & does this setting override the regular menu network settings??
I get "G", "E", "H" randomly based on my locations but no "3G" or "H+" and further at times these icons are grey and sometimes blue and in either cases randomly
at different locations sometimes data throughput is not there as only one of the arrow shows active blinking. Any advise on the status based on colors and the blinking of the arrows?? Thanks!
PS _ This is what another user had posted (do you guys feel this is a phone defect?)
I wasn't able to solve this problem about an year. But did. And totally sure that it is Device's defect (in some cases it is a ROM deffect as in my case, in other - hardware. Smth like stack overflow issues at GSM controller or so). A year ago when I had face this "sim card does not allow connection... " problem, there are no google serch results on this keywords request. Any. To remove this message I was ought to reboot my device every time it appears. And I was thinking that it is normal behaviour for my device. But now there are lot of complainings at the web ( minimum 5 of Galaxy Tabs P1000, thousands of HTC Disire, few motorolla Deffy, 10 Galaxy Ace, few of Nexus S and so on), so I understand that I'm not alone, and problem is known. So I went to Samsungs Service and they confirmed that it is famous problem, have flashed my phone with some magic ROM (magic because it is official but does not available anywhere in the web, XDA or samsung sites! ) and now my phone works fine. Any other solutions like battery removing, *#*#4636#*#* sirvice menu, new sim-card, flashing variety of modems and roms, didn't helps me. This is not faulty sim. This is serious device's defect. Bring your phone to manufacturer and let them repair it or give your money back. This is their problem not your.
I have a friend who has this phone. The problem is I inputted the data setting for their service provider and it worked for a while, now though it doesn't work. Enabling or disabling the data settings doesn't work and on checking the Testing Menu the phone has not GPRS service and the Roaming shows Roaming also it shows that it has 3g. The 3g symbol shows up in the notification area yet it wont connect however Wifi works and Calling and Sms work as well.
I would factory reset the phone but my friend doesn't want to do that. Is there anyway to fix this.
I have a network issue with my OnePlus 8T. Whenever I enter an area that doesn't have great signal, if my phone connects to 4G, I completely lose all signal and the phone will read "No Service" or "Emergency Calls Only". The best thing I can do is toggle Airplane mode or restart the phone to fix it. The issue does not occur if I set my phone to 2G/3G only. My phone will have signal absolutely everywhere, there isn't a spot that I know of that doesn't get reception. However, the moment I tap "Mobile Data", if the phone connects to 4G and the signal isn't 50% or better. My phone just loses all network on the spot and refuses to return unless I do the two things I listed above. I've been in contact with my service provider, tried swapping SIM slots and cards, reset my network, verified APN is properly setup. Just about everything by now. Does anybody know of a possible solution to this?
