Instagram Image Quality - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Anyone else have quality issues when uploading an image to Instagram? I've checked to make sure my settings are correct, but still notice pictures are being compressed and posted with lower quality.
For comparison, my settings on S8+ are the same as my Google Pixel, and images loaded via the Pixel look clearer and higher quality than the S8. I even went so far as to load the same image through both phones.

I've viewed some of my uploads from my GS8 on my PC, and haven't noticed any compression issues. I edit most of my posts in Snapseed before uploading to Instagram, and I haven't seen either app add any visible compression.

Gallery zoom: Poor detail

The Gallery app on our phone doesn't increase the detail of images after you pinch to zoom. Does anyone know of a way to fix this or a different gallery app that will do this properly?
If you view pictures directly from the camera app, it shows the full resolution of the photo when you zoom in (but its slow to pinch to zoom). If you do it from the gallery app, it just scales a lower resolution rendering of the photo to fit the screen, but it doesn't actually re-render the image at full resolution (but its very smooth). I'm looking for something that works like the iPhone's gallery app, which scales as you zoom so that the interface is smooth, but once you stop at a certain zoom level, it re-renders the image in a higher resolution (aka best of both worlds).
Just curious, which rom are you running?
I'm running JI6 Froyo. I noticed the same issue on JH7 as well...
It would appear he is correct! Even on a 5MP picture of the underside of my car, I can't get any more detail then I do looking at it normally.
I experience the same thing; my gallery also takes its sweet time to notice new images from downloads or edits in Photoshop. I suspect most of these anomolies are due to the beta Froyo I've been running since it was leaked.
Gallery just sucks , it always had crappy zoomed quality with no details , Be it my Nexus one with eclair -> froyo to Cappy eclair -> froyo.
Its as if your watching thumbnails and not actual pictures.
There was modified gallery a while ago in Nexus one forums not sure if its still around, supposed to be better then default one.

Dunno why camera shots are coming out low res (I'd imagine that it's just the gallery program that sucks), but downloaded photos on JI6 are automatically resized to 305x203.
I actually remember reading some article a while back that talked about this issue (the gallery being low-res), and mentioning that this is by design. Apparently the developers decided that UI speed is more important than photo quality. I wish I still had the url to that article..
Also, forget searching for 'gallery' in the market. All the search results are retarded wallpaper/mostly naked girl spam. I wish spamming the market with valueless programs was a hangable offense.
Have you guys tried the apk from HERE? I have it loaded and while it does load alot slower it does seem to be higher res. Give it a shot, You will have to copy over the current APK in system/app with something like Root Explorer, or uninstall the gallery then try to install. I could not get it to install but coping worked great
I also remember reading an article that explained that the Gallery purposefully did not display images in their native resolution.
There is a free application in the Market called, "Floating Image" that will display images from any folder of your choosing as well as Flickr, Picase and Facebook in a floating collage of pictures. You can then tap on one and use multitouch to zoom in on the photo in it's full resolution.
I use it to display my camera roll as it allows me to see my photos in much more detail as opposed to the built in Gallery that I can't stand. The only issues that I have with it are that it stutters a little bit when using the high resolution thumbnail option and that it cannot see hidden folders.
I think the gallery is opengl-based and it treats photos as textures, which are limited to 1024x1024 res.
If you don't mind losing the 3d effects, download an app called JustPictures!. It's now my default photo viewer. You can double-tap to zoom to actual size or pinch-zoom. It's fast and free.
Bonus: slideshow live wallpaper
Did some searching and found an article that talks about the issue:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2362605,00.asp
Apparently Google chose the cool 3d gallery instead of better image quality. Its clear to me why lowering the image quality is wroth it for making things smooth, but I don't know why the app can't render more detail after you zoom in. Anyway, JustPictures! works pretty good and does show better details. Its a bit slower (and the stock gallery isn't particularly fast), but it gets the job done. I wonder if JustPictures! is the best solution out there or if there are other apps worth checking out as well...
Previous posters are correct that the lower image quality is part of how the program was built. However, there is an article on this site that has a link to the HTC gallery version which can improve the quality, but still is not truly 1 to 1 quality, jest better than stock.

s7 - raw images very low resolution? (504x376)

Just picked up an S7 duos as an upgrade to my much loved Z2 (still in contention if its a worthy upgrade).
Primary reason is the camera, however, firstly, the auto jpeg's are really not as good as I was expecting (very over saturated, weird contrast effect), so naturally I checked out pro mode and raw. I can get better images out of it and initially the first few raw images I captured I was impressed with. However since then, raw images are now captured at 504x376 resolution??? yet 20+MB in size. I've copied to my PC and indeed that is the resolution. The associated JPEG is expected resolution.
Is there a solution? I've googled with no luck
edit: second issue is the camera "restarts" 2-5 times when i first fire it up.
I'd clear the data/cache of the camera app
24mb~ is the correct size for RAW, but they should be the resolution you have set in the camera resolution settings
You haven't installed an updates to the camera app via APK?
If yes, uninstall them back to the factory version

Hi, thanks for the reply
I've tired clearing the cache, then straight to pro mode, switch on raw, take a pic... the jpeg is as expected, the raw file is low res
The phone came reset but with 7.0 on. Perhaps I should try to roll it back to 6

Did you clear Data of the camera app along with cache?
7.0 shouldn't be a problem, you could try factory resetting the phone again though if you can't cure it any other way
I'm having the same issues with the camera running on 7.0. Raw images saves at 20mb but it looks like a blocky mess when viewed in the gallery. The jpeg in auto mode also comes out overly compressed with a a lot of artifacting. Shooting in pro mode helps a bit, but still looks comparably worse next to another S7 in my possession.

You can't view RAW in the gallery, only a low rez thumbnail, copy them to the PC and use Lightroom or something to view them
YES I have the same issue! The RAW images are normal if I upload them to my PC, but editing them on the phone they're super low-res. Even if I try to open the RAW files in Photoshop Express, the low-res thumbails open. Huge issue for me since I do a lot of photography. Have you found a fix?

Ah, I see. I installed Snapseed and the raw images came out fine. I never realized the stock gallery didn't support raw preview because I used to open them in the Google Photo app on my Note 5.
I still have issues with noisy and compressed photos shot on auto mode. I remembered it being much better on Marshmallow. The Note 5 next to me has the same problem after the update to Nougat.

Not having any problems with Auto mode, obviously Pro mode is superior but Auto comes out nice too
I remembered MM having amazing photos and flashed back to test, but they came out the same as Nougat so upgraded again
Try flashing back, see if there really is a difference, memory is a funny thing, also I got my phone in August so it was still pretty bright and sunny when I had MM on it, so photos did come out looking great as it loves good lighting conditions
Then since Nougat came along it's been winter, so bad light conditions, summer is on it's way again which will be a good test this year

Uploading photos in reduced quality

We now know that we get unlimited full quality photo upload with Google Photos on Pixel 2, but what if - for any reason - I don't want that? I'd prefer having high (reduced) quality photos uploaded, but can't find a way to enable that on Pixel. Anyone has an idea how to do that? Maybe with some adb magic?

Google Photos: High quality on the phone, low quality on the PC

With my Pixel 3, I have 3 years of original quality backup. It says so in the settings. Now when login into Photos over my PC, the image sizes are about a third of the size of the phone-pics (eg. 10mb vs. 3mb). If I go to the settings in Google photos on my PC "safe in high quality" is checked and no sign of the 3 years deal. I want to download all the pics to my PC in original quality... Any suggestions?

If the pictures that aren't original quality were taken with a phone other than a pixel, that's normal. Only pictures taken on a Pixel phone are saved at original quality. Were all the pictures taken with a Pixel phone?
All the pics were taken with my Pixel...
Here are two Screenshots
1. Google Photos Settings in the App
2. Google Photos Settings in the Browser
Is that the same for you?
Only uploads from the Pixel are original quality. If you upload from the browser, it's high quality. That's what the setting discrepancy is. If you toggled the website to Original Quality it would use your Google Drive quota.
On PC when I click a photo to view it, right click in Chrome and select Open in New Tab and then save that image, it's a reduced quality (89kb file). If I check that image and click Download it gives me the full resolution file (3,151kb). The files displayed in the Google Photos website are showing reduced quality to speed loading and save data/bandwidth. Downloading will give you the full original quality photo per the Pixel program.

The image quality of the camera is a LOT worse than advertised

Hello there, other S10e owners,
Recently, I took advantage of an early Black Friday sale to get an S10e, the phone I was craving for a while. They said the image quality is on par with the Pixel 3 after the May update, but in reality, it's just as noisy and "oil-paintingish" as my Xperia Z1 Compact from four (!!!) years ago.
The samples are in the attachment of this forum post; the first and the third image was taken with the Google Camera app, and the second and forth one with the Samsung Camera app. The first two images were taken with HDR, but the latter ones without HDR.
As you can see in the non-HDR pictures, the Samsung Camera picture has less noise, but cold, washed-out colours and less detail thanks to the aggressive noise cancellation.
On the other hand, the Google Camera image has the correct colour representation and more detail, but with the sacrifice of noise cancellation.
With HDR+, though... Things get even worse. The Samsung Camera app now blurs out even more detail and the Google Camera app just cranks up the ISO to levels that make the image too bright.
In conclusion, the image quality is not on the promised levels, but I hope there's something I can do with it (like a good setup.xml file that can fix GCam to shoot exceptionally good images in both sun- and low light or fixing the Samsung Camera app). So, in order to fix this, I need your help. Please give me advice to pimp back up the image quality to the levels I saw in camera reviews.
Edit: Oops, I forgot to mention that I have the Exynos version.

Please give me the Gcam download link. I couldn't find any Gcam version that worked well on my S10e Exynos. Thanks

If you can do something with it, here's the link: GCam Exynos APK
In sunlight, it should theoretically work with the stock settings, but they say it's recommended to change the auto-exposure correction to 1/2 sec, the Night Sight correction to 1/4 sec and the exposure compensation to -3,0 to get the best out of daytime GCam photos.
For Night Sight images, it's recommended to use the mackytravel-nightsight.xml file without any changes for outdoor night photos and for indoors, turn off auto-exposure correction and exposure compensation, change the Night Sight correction to 1
or 2 sec (depending on the level of darkness) and in the Advanced drop-down menu, turn off the ISO limit. This way, you can get more detail out from the S10e's powerful camera sensors.
Lastly, if you'd like to shoot something with the wide-angle lens, just change the auxiliary camera switching method to the long-press method.
You can find my GCam config folder with all of the said configuration files at the link here.
Just install the GCam apk, copy-paste the config folder to the root of your internal storage (/storage/emulated/0/) and double tap on the black area around the shutter button to choose between the three configuration files.
I've noticed a similar thing with my camera on my SD 855 model where images taken using the camera just don't look very natural or realistic. They look very much like a painting!
Currently I get better results with HDR on and scene optimiser turned off.
My iPhone 7 photos still look a bit more natural at times but obviously less detailed.
