Will S8 Plus ever get Stock Android and are you bothered? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I absolutely think it is the best phone currently in the market and all it needs is stock rom, to make it smoother faster and simpler.
Will it ever get stock android and how many are looking forward to it?
I wonder how many people are happy with TW and not bothered about custom roms or stock android?

I use Nova Launcher and very happy. Stock Android is dull as dishwater. I enjoy some of the Samsung apps. If you don't like them, disable them. Samsung won't ever provide stock. They'll have nothing to sell! Its not in their interest.

A S8+ with stock android would lose all of the features that make it a great phone. (ie. Edge apps, themes, bluetooth sound on 2 devices, IRIS Scanner, Gear VR, Samsung Pay)

Exactly. Giving the Galaxy S8 phones stock Android from Samsung itself would ruin the whole point of the Galaxy S8 phones. You would lose so many features that way that the Galaxy S8 / S8+ would just be a blinged out Pixel phone.
Ofc, having the ability to install a custom Stock Android version is always a nice idea to have for those who really want it. But having that as an option from Samsung directly is NOT a good idea.
EDIT: riz157, the UX / UI is not called TouchWiz anylonger. It's called Samsung Experience now on the Galaxy S8 phones. When Galaxy S6 and S7 phones got Android 7.0, they got the earlier Grace UX that was before Samsung Experience.

Just and FYI.......Bluetooth on two devices at the same time is a product of Bluetooth 5.0 not Samsung.

Used custom rom on my S7E, (AOSP - which sucked ass, no features, then I used SupermanROM and I sticked to that.
Now I got my S8+ and I'm pretty happy with Samsung experience, so I won't be doing anything at all, I'll keep my Knox: 0x0 for now.

Interesting looks like most people are quite happy with Samsung experience. Admittedly it's vastly improved from previous versions but still shows signs of delay lag etc.
Not as buttery smooth as stock android.
I personally don't use Samsung stock apps other then email app.

Bump up

I would love of the old GPE program came back. Then I'd be happy to spend $850 on a S8+ GPE. It's just WAY SMOOTHER and cleaner UI and always up to date. But Samsung makes the best hardware.

I love the S8+ and feel the Samsung features built into it help make it special. I always flash custom roms, but they keep many of the Samsung tools/TW tools I like. Having said that, I also like AOSP based roms and if the S7 Edge is any example, it won't be too long until we get some to play with on our S8+ phones sometime in the future. (it took about 8 months or close to a year before AOSP Roms were available on the S7 edge) - but considering how close the S7 is to the S8 - it may not take that long. Time will tell.
And NO I am not bothered - what is there to be bothered about?

I'm looking forward to more custom roms because it gives s8 more freedom and change the themes fonts etc easily without having to purchase from Samsung and be limited to their poor options.
Samsung are trying to be apple of android, want you to purchase from there store themes etc. So glad there's competition in android world otherwise we would be locked down to samsung and apple!!

Doubt it, and I am not bothered.
Personally I find the S8+ faster and mostly smoother than the Pixel I had before. Mainly because the Pixel lags to hell and back in apps like Instagram and Facebook whereas the Exynos S8+ doesn't.
Over time I am sure the S8+ will slow down but like PC's I will just "Format it" and it will back to being much faster and generally smoother than the Pixel (and less buggy than the pixel)

Most people prefer TW, after using it for several weeks on my S8 plus I'm still not convinced.
I still would like stock and more custom Roma, at the moment there's not much choice which is a shame.
I certainly hope that changes in the coming weeks.

Not bothered at all. My personal opinion:
Want stock Android? Get a Pixel (or Nexus)
Want bleeding edge hardware? Get any flagship Android phone
The nice thing about Android is the individuality of each company brings. Samsung with its own Samsung UX for the S8 (not TouchWiz, not Grace UX), LG with their Full-Screen UX for the G6, Huawei with EMUI for their Mate 9 and P10, and so on.. They all put in their own features that would make their phones stand out. They all work quite well and I never had to install a launcher since my S6 Edge Plus. But still the option is there if you want/need to.

Has everybody forgotten that this happened once?
https://www.engadget.com/2013/07/06/samsung-galaxy-s-4-google-play-edition-review/

I would love to see a developer edition of this phone (aka stock android). I do like that TouchWiz isn't so smothering lately, but there are many aosp-isms that I miss.
My perfect phone would be a pixel that looked like an S8+ running stock Android. That would be one sexy piece of kit. I hope we can at least root and rom this puppy one day. I'm a dreamer...

samsung ui got better, but I'm using a moto z2 play now for half the price and......they understood perfectly what a manufacturer has to do. Moto has pretty much vanilla experience except of some apps, some add on funcionality, it's far more sexy than samsung. It's extremely speedier with half the price, it's a pain that samsung always bloat their software for no new functionalities (irid scanner? ahahahahah, samsung pay? ==> android pay, side apps? always the first thing I disable in samsung edges). It got better then natural ui on s4, yes, but that was a big ****, this is only a little and less smelly **** compared to stock experience....to me, obviously

This is dumb. If I wanted stock Android I wouldn't buy a Samsung.

You needing to take the time out of the day to write this is dumb lol

So what is the point of having stock android?

Let me start off by saying that I am not trying to troll at all I am just generally curious. I for one have had a galaxy nexus, and I loved it (minus the battery life) and also been through a galaxy s 3 and 4. Off the bat the 3 and 4 both have a butt load of features that I always missed when I would flash stock android roms and it always seemed like the camera software was far better than anything a stock android device can get. I do get that stock android devices get updates directly from google and I also get that the skins take up a lot more space but besides those reasons is that alone what makes stock android far better than anything else? I hear people complain about the tw skins or sense skins about how it looks so ugly but isnt a simple fix for this is to just add another launcher like apex? Anyways this is just my personal opinion on the matter and I just wanted to see other peoples inputs. Like I said im not trolling but I just want to see what everyone else thinks.

It's a combination of factors, IMO. There are some folks who are Android "purists" who like the hardware, but want just the stock version of Android better than anything an OEM adds onto it. Kind of like stripping down a car to keep the engine and the body shape, but tuning it to run the way you like it. Most of the people here at least want to have the ability to remove any apps or parts of the "skin" (like Touchwiz) that they don't want or use and want them gone so that they're not taking up system resources. On the SGS4, for instance, there's been allot of blow back at Samsung because they've crammed so much software for their bells and whistles that the 16GB model has almost half it's system memory (the area where applications, games, Google Play Music or movies, etc.... have to reside) that there's hardly any room to include a new launcher and most of the Apps you might want to run. The expandable storage is nice for pictures, videos, or MP3s you already own and want to store, but it's not usable by applications.
In short, if it's my phone I want total control over what is and what isn't on it no matter what Samsung and AT&T want to cram down my throat. Samsung's Camera software is something I'd probably like to keep, but the silly air gestures and "touchless scrolling" I could care less about. Not to mention the load of programs AT&T also drops on there which I never use and am perfectly happy to see gone also.
If you're happy with your phone the way you currently have it, then no one else's opinion should matter as to how you should have it set up. But there's a wide variety of what people do and don't want on their phones and if they want Vanilla AOSP or CM or modified Touchwiz and they're willing to trade off some Stock features to get what they want, this is one of the places people come to do that. As long as someone accepts the responsibility that they may brick their phone and void the warranty by playing with the software, then they should have the freedom to do whatever they want with it.
As of today, is it possible to install stock Android on the current Samsun Galaxy S4 (mine is from Canada Fido).
Funny thing is, I wish google didn't install their bloat onto the gs4. If there's already a stock music app why preinstall google music. Same with all their other bloat. Not needed like chrome. They should of made google software optional. Keep samsungs in since it is their product.
I honestly think that stock Android is pretty overrated. I've had the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 and they were both pretty terrible. What makes Android so awesome are the different tweaks and software that the makers use. Sure, the simplicity of stock is fine, but that's about it. For example, the TW SG4 will have IR support, a better camera app, etc. You loose a lot of functionality with going stock.
What I really want to see is some fusion rom with the stock Android mixed with all the TW goodies, like the gestures, camera app, etc.

Because, manufaturers have to keep a crlertain amount of stock android included in their phones...as in a certain percentage of software with no touchwiz...so that is likely why they left some of the stock google apps in

The hardware might be Samsung's product, but Android is Google's product.
Manufacturers don't have to keep anything. They use stock android as the basis. The pieces you mention like ir blaster use drivers outside of stock android. If devs had these drivers then we would have stock android with goodies. Stock is good because source code is available for all of it. That means it can be heavily customized. Touch wiz is Samsung's and they will not release the source.

First off, it is all preference--no phone, OS is perfect for everyone.
I have been flashing roms heavily for over 3 years. Mostly HTC like the Nexus One and One S.
I found things I liked in both Sense and AOSP. I did like theming status bar items, color, look etc. Most of the flashing was to get newer versions of Sense and Android. I was running 4.2.2 on One S long before it was on hardly any phones.
It did seem no matter what custom rom you ran, you lost something you liked from another one. There were always minor issues with wifi, audio, reboots etc for many people. Some roms just didn't play well with some phones. So, lots of soft bricks and frustration. I was lucky there.
This is the first phone I have owned that I have no interest in flashing custom roms. I can't believe i even like and don't want to change the wallpaper. I usually always made my own semi-gloss black. But, the colors are so vibrant and icons stand out extremely well on S4. Would like to get rid of balloon on lockscreen. But, no one stares at their lockscreen.
With all the trolls and nay-sayers on the forum, both mine and my son's S4's run perfect. No lags and all the "gimicks" work as advertised. I find myself using them more and more. Wouldn't want to give them up now. S-Voice is perfect and Air View I really like. Don't use the scroll though. S-Memo is an essential for me now. A carry over from Note 2. I even like the stock calendar which I hated when just testing the Note 1 and 2 awhile back. Love being able to create and move calendar events by voice. Don't use GMail calendar anymore other than my work one is tied to it. Camera is great too.
I could see rooting for Nandroids and Titanium though.
This is a great phone regardless of what others say. But, each to there own--
Oh yeah--love Blocking Mode--an imitation of Quiet Hours on Android--couldn't live without it
And I don't know about Touch Whiz. But, whatever it is suppose to be it works great on S4
The "quirky" Air Gestures work fine too. Palm for Screenshots is a little tough to work out though
There is so much on this phone it will take me 6 months to learn and remember to use all of it--
Every time there's a new nexus coming out I have to get it. I enjoy it for about a month then it bores me to death and I go back to a Samsung, HTC or LG phone. I much prefer the UI overlays over stock. Not that stock is bad or anything, it runs super smooth but it is just boring. Hopefully KLP will bring some visual changes as well.
It's like driving a Chevelle Super Sport (SS) 454, which I did. Compared to a 2013 fully technical (GPS/Audio etc) loaded Mercedes or equivalent. The Chevelle had all the power you could ever want. But, in the end that is all it had. Now you have all the bells and whistles on these cars like the S4 has fun features.
I came from the Galaxy Nexus to the GS4 1337.
What I hate the most is the duplication of functions! That drives me insane. Google already has a contacts app, so why do I need a fugly AT&T contacts app? Why do I need a AT&T navigation app AND GMaps? Why do I need a Google calendar, AT&T calendar, Samsung calendar all on the same phone?? Just setting up the phone from scratch infuriates me... skip skip skip skip skip skip skip skip
and my favorite... TWO APP STORES! That was jaw dropping. It's a constant assault to your intelligence trying to automate everything in the worst way possible. It's like Samsung apps are at war with Google Apps and everyone is at war with AT&T apps.
The very first possible second I could load CM10.1 on this phone, I did.
While I was waiting on the unlocked bootloader, I did play around with the S Health, WatchON, and the camera/video, and I did enjoy them and miss them from my CM 10.1 experience, but even that couldn't make up for the garbage installed on this phone from the factory.
it's funny on everyone's experience. i found no problem setting my homescreens up and just ignored apps i didn't want. at this point don't even know they are in app drawer.
I bought Nexus 4 after already had Galaxy s3 for a while. Even though Nexus 4 is fantastic device, I thought its too vanilla for me. Even though compared to S3, there was not much feature differences. I don't think I will ever get Pure Nexus phone again..may be tablet will be fine. The other thing is I sometimes get into a phase where I want to use AOSP rom so I flash CM10.1 or AOKP. But as soon i get bored back to TW rom. Can't do that with Nexus devices...
The only thing i want from Stock is the AOSP messaging app. The quick reply from the notification drop down and pop up is awesome.

God forbid they give you a choice of which app to use. Having a choice is one of the main factors that make people choose android over ios.

Agreed, but not allowing the complete uninstall of a duplicated app goes against the fundamental philosophies of android.
This goes for both Google, Apple, Windows or any other OS. What I want is the most basic OS possible and add apps as I see fit from the app store. I do not want anything forced on my device. The closest you can get to that nirvana is an AOSP ROM or Nexus.
.
Pure Android will mainly attract the developers as it is a great base to work from. Most average people will chose Sense or TW or any of the other Android distros (as that is more correct them calling them skins) due to the features. Most of those features can't be utilized by Devs unless they pay for the SDK like Samsung is doing now with them for the sensors in the S4. Only big companies are gonna be able to afford to pay what Samsung wants for the SDK to develop with.

This is a gross overexaggeration of the storage situation on the SGS4.
The only way I can think of that you can fill the ~9.7gb of internal storage with app data is if you're downloading every high resolution, high graphic intensive game available for the platform. If that's your case, then you're absolutely right. While admittedly not a high number, I have over 68 apps(most of which I use on a near daily basis) installed on my phone with the highest occupying 64.93mb. Most apps range from 10-30mb. At 64.93mb, I can have ~152.97 of those sized apps on my phone before running into storage capacity issues.
I like the rest of your post though.
One of the reasons I got the S4 and gave my iPhone 5 to the wife was mostly the software features Samsung added. I really do like the voice control for the camera and music apps, and I find some of the air gestures pretty good too. Going with a "Nexus" experience S4, I'd lose the very features I got the phone for.

wow.... there is a name I haven't seen for a long time... Did you get get an S4?

Why we kill our Galaxy S4 !!!!

first , hello to all xda members even the guests
we know every android device has it's own senses and look , Nexus devices is google look only with the pure android version
HTC is HTC because it's UltraPixel Camera and the xenon flash , and it is HTC because the main launcher features and senses
Samsung is SAM because the TW and the especial smart features
but , why we always try to kill the device look by downgrading it's features (the words now about the Galaxy S4)
S4 will not be S4 without the Camera app and the Smart Features smart scroll , pause , stay , AirView , gestures ...... etc ...
but when we use any pure android version on our S4 , then , we are killing the device , whatever what I gain from the update as long as it's pure
without the smart features S4 will not be even S3 because some S3 TW roms contains the Smart Scroll , and Pause
as I said whatever I will get from the update , even if it's Android 5 Lollipop , because the update will not make my S4 camera be 16 mp , or my CPU be
2.5 instead of our 1.9 or my RAM be 3gb like the N9005 , etc ... so I will get more performance more stability as the developers say (I guess it's wrong) because whatever the developers
tried will never ever make an stable rom without any bugs like the official release , so all is useless
the developers are in war , one makes CM12 as 4.0 , and other makes 5.0.1 etc why that ??? they must focus on the TW roms because it will upgrade really the S4 to be like S5 or N4 , but any pure version only will kill the S4 and makes it like an only Nexus 1 , etc ......
I really like the TW developers , especially (Tamirda and Slim08) because they are very professional and gave us super features that make the S5 users say how come , it was bad idea when I bought S5 or upgraded my S4 to S5 especially when I let him see my PhoeniX or Imperium's Notification panel , etc ... so thanks alot for the two stars
so getting the latest android version unofficially is very bad especially when the device officially doesn't get the last android version , example : i9300 it's final android version
is 4.3 so if I use any custom rom based on 4.3 , about 90% stable , but if I get custom rom based on 4.4.2 the rom be very unstable with buge especially the bug which made the s3 users forgot all the 4.4.2 base roms and the bug is (when the phone is turned off and I connect the charger the phone always powered on) this bug is terrible and that bug is in all 4.4.2 based rom
I repeat in all the 4.4.2 roms ex:Glamour s5 v 7 , s5 sensation 7 , etc ... and S3 can use CM roms because it hase no smart features , but S4 with pure roms will be ****
S4 with TW 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 is very well because the two versions is out for S4 officially with it's official kernel , and anyway android 5 for S4 is on the way and anyway it will be very nice as we sow the Sammobile video review , and the TW developers will upgrade their roms to be as android 5 after the official release the source code
if I was wrong , somebody correct me , anyway thank you and sorry for the long
In the long run there will be no touchwiz for further development, especially considering how 5.0 is likely the final update the S4 will receive officially. After then perhaps only the Google play edition S4 will receive updates (one more than the original possibly), and by that point there will not be a touchwiz rom beyond 5.0 unless it is a port.
That made no sense and gave me a headache trying to read it
I will tell you why.
Becasuse of speed and most important - STABILITY.
I only tried stock rom for 4 hours.
Then I tried omega rom, many versions, but there always appeared some bugs. In the beggingng after installing for like one month everything okay, then lags appeared, FCs, etc.
Then tried S5port Echoe. Again, after installing, felt like new pgone - everything great. One month passed and again random reboots when rotating or just using phone - but no lags.
GPE 5.0 finally stable and no REBOOTS !!!
Also, nearly all smart functions except air view and smart notification (vibrate after picking up phone with notification) are unusable, or not needed at all.
Maybe I'am transforming into apple user, but yeah, i would never say that but for now, with AOSP 5.0 Im the happiest during my android usage.
@didoop: It's funny you mention stability. I've only had one instance (so far) where my S4 became unstable, and that's when the NV memory became corrupted at the same time the SIM card tray failed. The former was caused by my attempting to add extra LTE bands to the phone, while the latter was just dumb luck.
As for Touchwiz itself, I'm running a stock ROM where the only modifications made to it were to debloat it. It's been rock solid, though I found the Touchwiz launcher to be a pain and quickly replaced it with Google Now. Realistically, the only feature I likely would miss switching to an AOSP/AOKP/CyanogenMod ROM would be the camera software. The Google version, while it includes Photosphere, just doesn't appear to be laid out as well as the Touchwiz camera.
What I will do after the S4 stops receiving official updates I haven't decided on. There are many choices available in the development section, and it'd be pointless to make a decision now, especially with 5.0 or 5.1 coming down the pike.
What's the point of this topic? If you don't like custom roms based on AOSP, don't use them... it's a matter of choice, for me and for many other people the S4's "Smart Features" are a complete useless trashy gimmick that samsung added only cause they had nothing else that was actually useful...
As i said, it's a matter of personal preference. Don't like it, don't use it, it's that simple. Now, bashing devs that try their best to bring the latest versions of Android and add their own features to improve users experience by saying their software turns our phone into crap... That's just plain ignorant and offensive.

This was directed at the OP, right? I know I mentioned using a stock ROM, but I didn't mention it with the purpose of bashing anyone. It was hard to tell since you posted after me and didn't mention who you were talking to. In any case, this was a rant. It was done in a hurry, and the OP was either clearly frustrated or a Touchwiz fanboy. Regardless, his wall of text was difficult to read, which makes it difficult for me to take him seriously.

Well, the point was to troll for responses really. We're giving them too.
thanx really for everyone who participated in this thread
may I was wrong , because from 4 months a go I used dual roms on my i9505 using dual boot switcher , primary as TW , secondary as AOSP base
so that was very nice , and I think hat solves my problem , and if android 5 supports the dual boot . it will be very great and sorry again for my first long post
forgive me
Sorry OP, but its gotta be said, you talk a lot of ****. No offence.
According to you, if I have an s4 without those rubbish gimmicky features like smart pause, then its not as good as an s3 with touchwiz.
I don't need those gimmick features. I have an s4 instead of an s3 because it has a more powerful processor, a more powerful gfx processor, more RAM, an infinitely better screen, a better camera, 4G, and it looks nicer.
Touchwiz is the biggest lot of crap. I'll stick with stock android, or a custom ROM close to it. There's lots of good features in custom ROMs that are actually useful, instead of just 'something cool to show to your friends' (but you don't actually ever use it, or you try to but it doesn't work half the time and you could have just done it yourself faster anyway).
Oh, and I'm using a beta ROM right now that is fast as hell and has been absolutely rock stable since I flashed it.
I used to own an S4, so let me say this...
Touchwiz, aka sh*twiz, is the most bulky, counterintuitive Android UX to date. Case in point, people with NOTE 4s report lag. Have you seen the spec sheet of the note 4? It should eat anything it throws at it. My cousin owns one and it jitters from time to time.
Removing touchwiz is actually, if you want to be technical, MORE beneficial. Constantly beating on the processor, memory and ram with features that require the specs of a small computer decreases device life. Also, constantly having to charge the battery decreases the life of the battery as well (one of the causes of battery swelling). TW is only accepted because the MAJORITY of Android users are oblivious to rooting. So, you, among others, can say that a Samsung isn't a Sammy w/o touchwiz, but a true Android enthusiast is going to equally support the opposition with facts that stand behind them.
P.S. - you can get TW features without the TW ROM. Sammy could easily detouchwiz their software, much like HTC did with Sense, but they do it to be rebellious in my opinion, and the same features can be implemented without the skin in a stock ROM. Remember, touchwiz is a FORK of AOSP. The look of TW is purely by choice, and its a bad one

I think between you and me, we've covered the main points.
Would debloating the stock ROM and replacing the Touchwiz launcher improve the situation? Obviously it wouldn't be as good as going with AOSP but it should make a difference, shouldn't it?
You could make a difference yes, but you'd be far better just getting rid completely of that TW crap.

On the flip side (playing devils advocate) I did use stock TW ROMs where the dev did a superb job with minimizing the TW footprint to the best of their ability. However, it was never enough. TW is just too ram hungry at its core to be considered a smooth Android experience.
Does TW Lollipop use ART by default like its supposed to??
We won't know that until ROMs start appearing, which won't be for a little while yet. The S5 owners will get Lollipop first.
In regards to lag, I haven't noticed any. But my experience is probably unusual.
What's the point? If you are so allergic to custom ROMs, I doubt you are at the right place....
The point is, am TOTALLY BORED by Samsungs UI & want something more "customizable". As for your mention of the hardware, if I DO change the ROM, on the flipside, the Camera won't be downgraded to 5 Mpx, isn't it? besides it's always good to have choices
regards,
Achyut.
P.S. --> A complete "no-point-to-be-made-random-chit-chat-going-nowhere" thread.
No hard feelings.
The only thing I hate is the camera and the sound....everybody else is ok, i love this phone.

[Q] Seriously considering buying GS6 but I have questions regarding UI mods & roms

[Q] Seriously considering buying GS6 but I have questions regarding UI mods & roms
First off, a huge thank you to anyone who takes the time to answer these. This might be the first non-AOSP phone i've ever bought.
I know all of the answers will be somewhat speculation since the GS6 is still new but mostly I'm just looking for what's been done in the past with the Samsung Exynos processors. And if I do get one I most likely will be getting a T-Mobile branded one as there does not seem to be a Samsung unlocked version sold in the US, if I'm wrong please correct me there.
So essentially my question is, will these changes be most likely possible.
1) Removing AM/PM from 12 hour clock.
2) Disabling capacitive button light and remapping buttons back to left, multitask to right. or
3) Getting nexus-style soft keys and disabling capacitive buttons.
4) Installing the AOSP Google Dialer and contacts.
So second part is about ROMS.
Now to my understanding the Exynos essentially means no stable 100% working AOSP roms ever. That has been my understanding and part of my reason for staying away from Galaxy S phones. Recently I've seen many places where people are saying just put CM12 on it but then in my own research CM12 or anything similar either seems to not be available or has serious bugs. So is it possible, lets say more than 50% chance that the GS6 will get a 100% stable bug free AOSP rom.
As a follow up to that, if it is possible, based on earlier phones and AOSP roms, does the camera suffer or does it retain the same quality. Sony phones for example, the camera breaks badly if you unlock the bootloader and install AOSP. It requires a locked bootloader and Sony rom to function properly. Also anyway for the fingerprint reader to still work on AOSP?
Second question regarding modded touchwiz roms. Can things like my above questions, and more AOSP like mods be done in these custom roms? Such as full AOSP theming of Samsung apps, stock google apps, and would apps like T-Mobile WiFi calling still work in modded touchwiz roms.
Once again a huge thanks in advance to anyone who helps out with these questions.
1.) Yes, I have done that on my S5.
2.)Once again yes, I have done that on my S5.
3.) I'm sure there's an app for that lol
4.) Idk but I've been wondering the same thing!
Check out MOAR ROM for the Sprint S5, that's what I'm running right now, just to give you an idea of all the mods possible.
From what I've heard, AOSP build will be damn near impossible on the S6, and also from what I've read, the camera does take a major hit in quality. AOSP themeing can be done once Samsung releases the theme SDK that is built into the new TouchWiz in the S6!

That rom seems perfect for what I would want, hope the GS6 gets something on par. I love AOSP but luckily Samsung has actually done a pretty decent job with TouchWiz on lollipop and since I simply don't trust Google to make a Nexus phone with a good camera or battery anymore after the N6 I'm really considering the GS6 and I've really been enjoying playing around with it at best buy but obviously coming from 7 years of AOSP it's tough to leave.
Glad 1 and 2 are a yes. Probably my biggest annoyances. Though you mention the S5, that's on a snapdragon correct? I assume from your yes those should still be possible regardless of chipset.
I really hope 4 is possible. I've done a lot of searching but haven't found anything unfortountly. I could live with the Samsung dialer, but I would much prefer to have the Google one.
If the camera quality will degrade with AOSP than I just wouldn't even bother. Camera is probably my biggest reason for the S6 over a new Nexus.

Yeah man, that ROM made my S5 the amazing phone that I love haha, so much freakn customization within the ROM.
Yes the S5 is on Snapdragon, but MOAR is a TouchWiz based ROM, not AOSP.... and TouchWiz based ROMs won't be a proble, regardless of the chip that's used. And I also would love to see #4 too, but I'm guessing it would have to somehow be ported to work with the S6 & TouchWiz.
Some info on camera quality:
I've had every galaxy phone since the Note 2 / S3.
The camera is always MUCH worse on AOSP/CM roms. Worse than the difference on a Sony going from stock to AOSP.
However now with the new camera API and better 3rd party apps coming out I think it may not be an issue.
I tried the "Snap Camera" app on my Galaxy S6 today and it seemed just as good as the stock Samsung app but I'll have to do more testing.

Ouch. Well no need to really worry about AOSP now though it would be nice one day. Always the hope Google actually makes a good Nexus 5 again though  . I would hope that third party apps would retain quality though the new Camera app from Samsung is excellent from my experience demoing it.

Exynos is not as open (or open at all?) like Qualcom is. Therefore it is REALLY dang hard to get AOSP ROMs.

What are pros and cons of flashing a stock Android on the S7?

so i haven't had a samsung phone since 2003 until the S7. the last few phones i had were running stock android, without all the crap and i loved it. now, i know that samsung ui brings with it some benefits. what would i lose (and gain) if i flashed a stock android rom on my S7? thanks
1) not sure there already is a stock rom for S7 ...
Pros:
+ Getting stock android
Cons:
- Loss of some/most/all "samsung" features (possibly also some fingerprint support and so ... )
im not sure if you know the home screen launcher (called samsung touchwiz) can be replaced with better ones like nova launcher and such... is that what you mean by Samsung UI?
changing roms actually change the functionality of the Android system wide functions/features, its different to the home screen UI.
the rom that came with your s7 is stock samsung you could say. Samsung made it, so everything, all the hardware works with the rom... some people want more software features or less features and so flash other roms, like vanilla stock roms or asop/cm roms, even though it may mean some software features wont work and even some hardware functions.
Every rom dev will tell you what's on offer and what the issues are.
the s7 is quite fast now, so you could just root the current rom (once root is available for your model) and remove/freeze apps known not to be required to clean the rom of Samsung junk. also install xposed to add new system wide changing features and such, but the more you mod the more risk of having issues.
"Stock" android is called AOSP okay? It's a little confusing when you say it like that.
Anyhoo, AOSP is faster than TW, and you will have constant update even when S7 is not supported by samsung anymore. However, Samsung made sure that TW is best compatible with their devices so you wouldn't notice any difference at all when it comes to speed. Also when flashing AOSP, you will lose almost all features TW has.
I wouldn't recommend flashing a stock android. Reasons:
1. you'll have to void your warranty and trip the Knox counter. This is a one way street, there is no known method to "untrip" this counter, so Knox will be disabled on your phone (even some samsung services like samsung pay MIGHT be disabled)
2. the s7 hase plenty of power and enough ram, so "having more free ram" or "faster app opening speeds" isn't hardly an argument nowadays anymore.
3. Bloatware removal? Well, at least my s7 (exynos version with dtm german telekom image) came surprisingly clean. Microsoft Office, the usual google apps and the usual samsung apps. No Bild.de, hrs hotels or such crap anymore. And you can disable the apps you don't want easily via the app manager or via another android app called psp (or similar, just search the s7 subforum a bit, you'll find it).
4. optimization: as the posters stated above: the s7 rom is designed for the s7, and just the s7. so all the hardware is probably supported the best under this rom. in the early days of android one just had to cope with the 2g/3g modem, acceleration/light sensor, wifi and perhaps gps. nowadays there is tons of stuff more: fingerprint, special bluetooth low energy functionality, special camera sdks (mostly not public), magnetometer, some people also believe there is a fm radio chip in the s7... and so on and so on... this is making things difficult to implement for the developers of rom bundles as cyanogenmod or aosp.
---> if your only concern is the newest android in case of security: the s7 has android 6.0.1 now, this version has a decent capability to get SECURITY updates from google directly. Meaning the most crucial android wide security loopholes will be fixed. no more "stagefreight will never be patched for my 2,5 year old phone" anymore.
---> if you always want the newest roms for the newest pure android features: I assure you, samsung is sometimes ahead of those. the 5.x rom I am currently using on my xperia mini pro is actually pretty similar in case of functionality/usability with the 4.x rom of my s5. many of the features I missed in the pure 4.x which samsung implemented are now standard in the 5.x "clean android".
I guess you should just lay low and wait for your guarantee to be over OR reconsider once a good rom is available which has features that you urgently want.
I'm also currently waiting for a rooting method which doesn't trip knox to appear so that I can root my s7 and start using it. It's just in the original packaging right now waiting...

thanks for the post. i'm not worried about the warranty. i've rooted the last 3 phones i had and never needed warranty claim. i just like running aosp as its very clean and when rooted gives me more customization options. i could care less about samsung pay or fingerprint scanner and such. so i'm ok with losing it. buying the s7 i was really looking for great hardware which it has and flashing aosp on it. the only reason i didn't go with nexus 6 is because there's no sd card.
You will not see any AOSP roms available for Exynos variants. Snapdragon variants have locked bootloader so unless Samsung unlock it (which I think may be a possibility) you will not see any roms for Snapdragon variants.

Gesendet von meinem SM-G900F mit Tapatalk
Was never a fan of flashing aosp over touchwiz unless the S7 had a gpe counter part and a port was made or something. I hade the m8 on verizon but there was also a m8 gpe as well so that was a great experience because that was just ported over and all the features were still there the boomsound, HTC camera app ect. Usually you lose on a lot of factory features that were made for that phone and what I realized when flashing aosp Roms was the drastic downgrade in camera quality, that was during the s3 and note 3 for me.
I mean I'll definitely give a aosp rom a shot no doubt about that. if we even make it that far with the s7. We still need root and unlocked BL first to even be thinking about all that. Unless you got the exynos version.
One big thing for me usually is the camera...
Somehow the stock camera is always easiest, best, flexible and most comfortable. Never really found a camera which could replace it (either not all functionality available, or just not working as smooth). But yeah, it's not as if there is (or likely will be) an AOSP rom for the S7...

Why do people buy Samsung Devices ?

Really !!! Why do people buy Samsung Devices ?
Yes I own a Galaxy S7 and yes I know what board this is but
The phone provided to me by work and I am stuck with it
This is a work phone I can not debloat, root, do custom ROMs
So what do I have,
I have a device that will never see Android 8.1, hell even the S 9 is at 8.0 "You know the S 9 may get Android 9.0 in the summer of 2019 if they are lucky.
I will not hold my breath for even 8.0
Every second day it seems Samsung pushes on my device some "Samsung" bloat they think I want, I which I can never uninstall and if I try to disable it, it will turn back on.
They feel they have a great, interface..... Without Nova Launcher I will be lost.
Thank you for not having Bixby..... maybe Samsung will decide to push that piece of junk to the S7 but for now I am free
Really I hate the S7, the bloat, being locked down, the lack of updates but people still buy them ?
Why ?
Maybe a major market is Corporations that like locked down devices.
Yes the company says here is your S7 ..... enjoy.
I hate the Samsung S9 so much I may actually buy my own device for work "The Pixel", think I will wait for the Pixel 3 but then ..... to Samsung so long and thanks for the Bloat.
Because they are good at making commercials so they lie people. And people are stupid and buying every year the new Samsung. They don't give a damn about android, they just want the latest model from Samsung.
@andrei1412
Not really... Samsung is simply the best hardware manufacturer, best amoled display (always the brightest every year), best camera (yes other manufacurer are building nice ones too), really good build quality overall, Samsung theme store (to establish android vanilla look, who else is featureing this?). You don't need to debloat since you don't neeed to use the samsung apps. Debloating can lead to increased battery drain.
As they said above, usually the best hardware for droid phones at that point in time and the Samsung hype makes it same league as iPhone so anyone who dislikes Apple usually go Samsung if they don't go HTC, or moto. For me I have owned the majority of every galaxy s and these phones with custom roms always seemed to be the best droid phone on the market in terms of battery life and performance.

Probably not worth it if you use those features, I think some of the roms can be ran with no root cause there based on stock and still use that stuff but I'm not sure about Knox. I've only had this s7 flat for a week and tried, bobcat rom, slim stable 2.0, and I'm on ultimate nougat now. I'm really liking ultimate nougats look with the theme, battery life so far, and the debloat.
These 3 seem stable but there's a ton of roms to choose from so you would have to test for yourself to determine your best and read/ sift through the threads and see what people are saying about the rom.
You can disable all bloat using a package disabler, which works without root. Android 8.0 is coming in 2 weeks, and I don't know why you even want 8.1 because there are almost no changes to talk about. Even 8.0's most notable feature PIP has been available in Samsung devices for a long time.
Your problems about rooting and custom ROMs are only because it's a work phone.
It looks like you didn't research any of your problems before coming to rant here :/

We (as a household) have a rather large number of Samsung devices - the S7 is, in fact, the first one that was NOT purchased deliberately (I got it as a gift) and replaced the far-older Galaxy Nexus (which I got from my mother). We also have two Galaxy tablets and four Samsung HDTVs (and two Samsung optical drives). Why all the Samsung hardware? Three words - bang for buck. Look at ALL the areas in which Samsung makes hardware (from Android to PC to appliances they have (and rather consistently) offered top-ten bang-for-buck - and not just in the US; if you do that, your products will sell. Are they perfect? No; however, who is? Even the folks that have DINGED Samsung admit that it is often due to issues with a specific Samsung product or a specific lack (in the case of the S7, it's about the locked bootloader). Still, is an unlocked bootloader that big a plus on the devices that compete with the S7 and up? How many of those devices have issues WORSE than those of the S7 and above - even with the locked bootloader (such as the Pixel and Pixel2)?

I'm also in Canada and usually we get updates without delay after their release from Samsung. From what I've seen (on their OS upgrade schedule), they only announce the release dates for updates a couple of days before we actually get them. My source is another phone carrier in another country: http://www.guncelmiyiz.com/akilli-telefon .
For the bloatware, you can uninstall all updates and keep the stubs (which will remove most of the app), and then freeze the app using AdHell or SABS. Although there isn't much bloatware to start with on phones in Canada.

This is one of the most imbecile rant I read on XDA so far: the real question is why your company is giving you a phone you don't like and you should ask your company.

I think the feature he wants is when he is looking at Software Information and Android Version to see the Number 8.1. He can't name other feature because he doesn't know one.

most imbecile rant I do not call people names maybe you should look in a mirror.
You know what I find imbecilic is Samsung fanboys, you claim you like Android yet you sign up with a company that does not give you a pure Android Experience.
You are so blind to Samsung you do not realize their hardware is not significantly better than from other manufacturers.
Amoled unless if you are and anal idiot, displays are subjective
Top Camera this is a S7 while the camera is good "it is not the best"
Large battery do you suppose other phone have significantly worse better live ?
Top processor many phones have newer generation processors, but like the "best" display the processor even on a 2 year old device runs everything fine.
Wireless Charging is at times convenient but not a deal maker you do know Wireless chargers are slower and not as efficient as chargers that some people have a hard time with figuring out. "Do some research look it up"
IP68 once again, you know out of the several dozen Android devices I purchased ....... not one ever got water damaged.
Out of all of these ......
I rather have Android as it is meet to be from the inventors non modified and non skinned
Hardware be damned
And yes I know what Google introduced in 8.1 https://www.xda-developers.com/android-8-1-oreo-developer-preview-features/
The Essential phone skipped Android 8.0 and when directly to 8.1
Samsung S9 and S9+ released with 8.0
Rogers at the time only had the Samsung S7, no other devices.
Flaming is not tolerated on XDA and any escalation in this thread will result in action against the users at fault and/or the thread being closed.
Hopefully this discussion can be a civil exchange of opinions from both Samsung haters and lovers alike. We must all accept that as human beings, each one of us is entitled to our opinion and/or preferences, regardless of whether they're seen as logical or not by others.
Keep it cool, dudes.

They may not have significantly better hardware now, but it was still the best of its time. The camera was the best until the Pixel came out half a year later. There were no compromises with this phone, and as much as you try make hardware features not seem not as important, they make a difference when choosing between something like a iPhone 6s/7 and another device.
And now I ask, how is anything of what you've said detract from the Android experience? Samsung may add features to Android, but they don't ever take away. I can also fully reskin Touchwiz to look like stock with any theme I like using Substratum and Nova Launcher. I also don't know why Android 8.1 is so important to you, as everything is just a UI change.
You probably shouldn't have bought a 2 year old non-Google phone if you wanted to jerk off to having the latest UI from Google. Also, you should realize that many people don't care about simple UI changes or optical differences. Maybe if we were iOS users, we would care, but this is a forum for Android enthusiasts.
Don't call others fanboys or other silly names just because they have different expectations when they buy a device.

I guess we will see in 2 weeks. Again, when is the last time Samsung announced the specific date for an update well before it releases?
I did not start the name calling but when "coradux" called me an imbecile, who would not take it personally.
I own a S7 now, will likely be buying a Pixel XL 3 "or whatever it is called in October"
Some people like me want quick updates and pure Android, others do not care.
I really did not know what I hoped to prove from this post. I think it should be closed.
