So what is the point of having stock android? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Let me start off by saying that I am not trying to troll at all I am just generally curious. I for one have had a galaxy nexus, and I loved it (minus the battery life) and also been through a galaxy s 3 and 4. Off the bat the 3 and 4 both have a butt load of features that I always missed when I would flash stock android roms and it always seemed like the camera software was far better than anything a stock android device can get. I do get that stock android devices get updates directly from google and I also get that the skins take up a lot more space but besides those reasons is that alone what makes stock android far better than anything else? I hear people complain about the tw skins or sense skins about how it looks so ugly but isnt a simple fix for this is to just add another launcher like apex? Anyways this is just my personal opinion on the matter and I just wanted to see other peoples inputs. Like I said im not trolling but I just want to see what everyone else thinks.

It's a combination of factors, IMO. There are some folks who are Android "purists" who like the hardware, but want just the stock version of Android better than anything an OEM adds onto it. Kind of like stripping down a car to keep the engine and the body shape, but tuning it to run the way you like it. Most of the people here at least want to have the ability to remove any apps or parts of the "skin" (like Touchwiz) that they don't want or use and want them gone so that they're not taking up system resources. On the SGS4, for instance, there's been allot of blow back at Samsung because they've crammed so much software for their bells and whistles that the 16GB model has almost half it's system memory (the area where applications, games, Google Play Music or movies, etc.... have to reside) that there's hardly any room to include a new launcher and most of the Apps you might want to run. The expandable storage is nice for pictures, videos, or MP3s you already own and want to store, but it's not usable by applications.
In short, if it's my phone I want total control over what is and what isn't on it no matter what Samsung and AT&T want to cram down my throat. Samsung's Camera software is something I'd probably like to keep, but the silly air gestures and "touchless scrolling" I could care less about. Not to mention the load of programs AT&T also drops on there which I never use and am perfectly happy to see gone also.
If you're happy with your phone the way you currently have it, then no one else's opinion should matter as to how you should have it set up. But there's a wide variety of what people do and don't want on their phones and if they want Vanilla AOSP or CM or modified Touchwiz and they're willing to trade off some Stock features to get what they want, this is one of the places people come to do that. As long as someone accepts the responsibility that they may brick their phone and void the warranty by playing with the software, then they should have the freedom to do whatever they want with it.

As of today, is it possible to install stock Android on the current Samsun Galaxy S4 (mine is from Canada Fido).

Funny thing is, I wish google didn't install their bloat onto the gs4. If there's already a stock music app why preinstall google music. Same with all their other bloat. Not needed like chrome. They should of made google software optional. Keep samsungs in since it is their product.

I honestly think that stock Android is pretty overrated. I've had the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 and they were both pretty terrible. What makes Android so awesome are the different tweaks and software that the makers use. Sure, the simplicity of stock is fine, but that's about it. For example, the TW SG4 will have IR support, a better camera app, etc. You loose a lot of functionality with going stock.
What I really want to see is some fusion rom with the stock Android mixed with all the TW goodies, like the gestures, camera app, etc.

Because, manufaturers have to keep a crlertain amount of stock android included in their phones...as in a certain percentage of software with no touchwiz...so that is likely why they left some of the stock google apps in

The hardware might be Samsung's product, but Android is Google's product.

Manufacturers don't have to keep anything. They use stock android as the basis. The pieces you mention like ir blaster use drivers outside of stock android. If devs had these drivers then we would have stock android with goodies. Stock is good because source code is available for all of it. That means it can be heavily customized. Touch wiz is Samsung's and they will not release the source.

First off, it is all preference--no phone, OS is perfect for everyone.
I have been flashing roms heavily for over 3 years. Mostly HTC like the Nexus One and One S.
I found things I liked in both Sense and AOSP. I did like theming status bar items, color, look etc. Most of the flashing was to get newer versions of Sense and Android. I was running 4.2.2 on One S long before it was on hardly any phones.
It did seem no matter what custom rom you ran, you lost something you liked from another one. There were always minor issues with wifi, audio, reboots etc for many people. Some roms just didn't play well with some phones. So, lots of soft bricks and frustration. I was lucky there.
This is the first phone I have owned that I have no interest in flashing custom roms. I can't believe i even like and don't want to change the wallpaper. I usually always made my own semi-gloss black. But, the colors are so vibrant and icons stand out extremely well on S4. Would like to get rid of balloon on lockscreen. But, no one stares at their lockscreen.
With all the trolls and nay-sayers on the forum, both mine and my son's S4's run perfect. No lags and all the "gimicks" work as advertised. I find myself using them more and more. Wouldn't want to give them up now. S-Voice is perfect and Air View I really like. Don't use the scroll though. S-Memo is an essential for me now. A carry over from Note 2. I even like the stock calendar which I hated when just testing the Note 1 and 2 awhile back. Love being able to create and move calendar events by voice. Don't use GMail calendar anymore other than my work one is tied to it. Camera is great too.
I could see rooting for Nandroids and Titanium though.
This is a great phone regardless of what others say. But, each to there own--
Oh yeah--love Blocking Mode--an imitation of Quiet Hours on Android--couldn't live without it
And I don't know about Touch Whiz. But, whatever it is suppose to be it works great on S4
The "quirky" Air Gestures work fine too. Palm for Screenshots is a little tough to work out though
There is so much on this phone it will take me 6 months to learn and remember to use all of it--

Every time there's a new nexus coming out I have to get it. I enjoy it for about a month then it bores me to death and I go back to a Samsung, HTC or LG phone. I much prefer the UI overlays over stock. Not that stock is bad or anything, it runs super smooth but it is just boring. Hopefully KLP will bring some visual changes as well.

It's like driving a Chevelle Super Sport (SS) 454, which I did. Compared to a 2013 fully technical (GPS/Audio etc) loaded Mercedes or equivalent. The Chevelle had all the power you could ever want. But, in the end that is all it had. Now you have all the bells and whistles on these cars like the S4 has fun features.

I came from the Galaxy Nexus to the GS4 1337.
What I hate the most is the duplication of functions! That drives me insane. Google already has a contacts app, so why do I need a fugly AT&T contacts app? Why do I need a AT&T navigation app AND GMaps? Why do I need a Google calendar, AT&T calendar, Samsung calendar all on the same phone?? Just setting up the phone from scratch infuriates me... skip skip skip skip skip skip skip skip
and my favorite... TWO APP STORES! That was jaw dropping. It's a constant assault to your intelligence trying to automate everything in the worst way possible. It's like Samsung apps are at war with Google Apps and everyone is at war with AT&T apps.
The very first possible second I could load CM10.1 on this phone, I did.
While I was waiting on the unlocked bootloader, I did play around with the S Health, WatchON, and the camera/video, and I did enjoy them and miss them from my CM 10.1 experience, but even that couldn't make up for the garbage installed on this phone from the factory.

it's funny on everyone's experience. i found no problem setting my homescreens up and just ignored apps i didn't want. at this point don't even know they are in app drawer.

I bought Nexus 4 after already had Galaxy s3 for a while. Even though Nexus 4 is fantastic device, I thought its too vanilla for me. Even though compared to S3, there was not much feature differences. I don't think I will ever get Pure Nexus phone again..may be tablet will be fine. The other thing is I sometimes get into a phase where I want to use AOSP rom so I flash CM10.1 or AOKP. But as soon i get bored back to TW rom. Can't do that with Nexus devices...
The only thing i want from Stock is the AOSP messaging app. The quick reply from the notification drop down and pop up is awesome.

God forbid they give you a choice of which app to use. Having a choice is one of the main factors that make people choose android over ios.

Agreed, but not allowing the complete uninstall of a duplicated app goes against the fundamental philosophies of android.
This goes for both Google, Apple, Windows or any other OS. What I want is the most basic OS possible and add apps as I see fit from the app store. I do not want anything forced on my device. The closest you can get to that nirvana is an AOSP ROM or Nexus.
.

Pure Android will mainly attract the developers as it is a great base to work from. Most average people will chose Sense or TW or any of the other Android distros (as that is more correct them calling them skins) due to the features. Most of those features can't be utilized by Devs unless they pay for the SDK like Samsung is doing now with them for the sensors in the S4. Only big companies are gonna be able to afford to pay what Samsung wants for the SDK to develop with.

This is a gross overexaggeration of the storage situation on the SGS4.
The only way I can think of that you can fill the ~9.7gb of internal storage with app data is if you're downloading every high resolution, high graphic intensive game available for the platform. If that's your case, then you're absolutely right. While admittedly not a high number, I have over 68 apps(most of which I use on a near daily basis) installed on my phone with the highest occupying 64.93mb. Most apps range from 10-30mb. At 64.93mb, I can have ~152.97 of those sized apps on my phone before running into storage capacity issues.
I like the rest of your post though.

One of the reasons I got the S4 and gave my iPhone 5 to the wife was mostly the software features Samsung added. I really do like the voice control for the camera and music apps, and I find some of the air gestures pretty good too. Going with a "Nexus" experience S4, I'd lose the very features I got the phone for.

iPhone 4 vs. Captivate/Android -- What are the differences?

I have an original iPhone 2G that I want to replace. I've been waiting for the new iPhone 4 to come out, and I was planning on buying one -- but the death-grip problem got me to do some research, which is how I found out about the Captivate.
Now I'm torn on which one to get. Obviously I'm very accustomed to the iPhone, but I've never used Android. So...
1. What are the major differences between iOS and Android?
2. What might I like better about Android? What might I not like about Andriod? And what might I like better about iOS?
3. What might I like better about the Captivate phone? What might I prefer about the iPhone 4 phone?
4. I've read a lot of comments about "Lag" on the Captivate, which would really bug me. Is it true?
Etc, etc...
I think you get the point of the thread.
Thanks in advance.
The hardware differences are obvious. As far as lag, yes, there's some issue's but there's work arounds.
The biggest difference, the IPhone is a great phone, right out of the box without messing with anything. But your stuck with what you got. Apps are restricted, web is restricted, your pretty much at the mercy of att and apple.
Android, requires more out of the box tinkering, but you have endless possibilities. You can customize your phone the way you want it.
You have to realize that the iPhone and ios are completely locked down. You are destined to use the apps that apple ok's you have no other hardware choices and are locked into iTunes and all things apple.
Android is a complete 180 it allows for so much customization that it is simply mind boggleing. If you are unhappy with a certain apps or feature sets you can simply build your own or find something else.
With this.freedom comes responsibility. You need to manage your Apps and memory usage. You have to babysit a bit in order to get the most out of the device.
Being able to play most movie files and tons of audio file types is very freeing
Also the screen is insanely gorgeous.
It really comes down to two things in the end.
Do you have tons of Apps already for ios that you are not willing to part with?
Do you like geeking out a bit in order to build your dream device?

Android uses widgets, which is something iOS lacks. You have the freedom to add and remove more than just app icons to your homescreen, such as weather indicators, contact rolodex, clocks, RSS feeds, facebook updates, everything. you can literally have every piece of pertinent info such as your todo list, email, weather, time, and alrams, all available on a single screen, without having to inside individual apps.
Another nifty feature of android are the live wallpapers. These animated, and often interactive, backgrounds adds a unique customization that lets people know your phone is unique.
the captivate is VERY usable right outside the box, unlike some other android phones. Despite what some people say, the Touchwiz UI (the UI that samsung has installed) is very fun to use, easy to customize, and is a natural transition for iphone users. The app dock at the bottom makes it feel slightly like an iphone, but includes the Android widgets to give you a nice feel of the phone.
On the downside, Samsung and AT&T install a lot of bloatware that slows down the phone. You will more than likely want to root the phone to be able to uninstall the AT&T Apps, the only duplicate the functionality that android has by default, and at a cost. for instance AT&T Navigate is a monthly charge app that is inferior to the free and default android navigate.

Hmmm, this may be a problem. The sluggishness would drive me nuts, but if "root" is similar to Jailbraking, it's not my cup of tea. I know, I know... most of you have no problem with this... but I've never done it and I most likely never will. Which (apparently) leaves me with a sluggish phone. Not good.
I appreciate the feedback... it's the only way to truly learn.

You can disable all of the apps without root, but they will still be in your menu taking up space. I notice it's the Samsung widgets that cause lag the most (but honestly, it's still snappy even with the bloat) once you disable them the thing flies.
And rooting is only superficially similar to jail breaking. all rooting does is install the superuser app that allows you to do things an administrator is allowed to do. If you don't want it on your phone you simply uninstall the superuser app and it's back the way it was. what would be more akin to jailbreaking would be to enable sideloading, a way to install apps without using the market. This requires editing the system database, which is harder to reverse. You can enable root without also enabling sideloading, they are two different processes.
If you use a PC, you can even use Droid Explorer to uninstall apps without rooting your phone.

Dont you need to have root access to install busybox? My droid explorer wouldnt work until I downloaded and installed an updated busybox.
Rooting my phone was the first thing I did as soon as I got home, so I'm not sure if you need to have root access to install busybox or not.

I suspect that people who have issues with sluggishness just got too enthusiastic about newly acquired freedom I solved this issue (that is if I even had it in a first place) by switching from Live Wallpaper to a regular one. No other tricks. I use TouchWiz (I like it). Here is a video comparing iPhone 4 and Captivate side by side. It uses stock Captivate and it's not any more sluggish than iPhone 4. In fact, it's faster in many tests.

It's not touchwiz that is laggy. I love touchwiz and it's extremely responsive. Rather, it's the Samsung widgets that clutter 3 homscreens that are very processor intensive. Once you place them in the trash and replace them with other apps from the market the experience is far better.

Interesting. Thanks for the link.
I'm coming from an iPhone (from what it sounds, i'm a more power user than you but I can offer insight)
the captivate has the advantage of having in house chip manufacturing, now while I have rooted and sideloaded and removed att bloat...before I did that all I did was remove the daily briefing widget (pretty useless imo) and I never experienced any slow down. I was used to waiting a bit with the 3gs so I was pretty happy with the experience.
If you're concerned about lag, don't. there really isn't any. it's perceived from when you hear you have a 1ghz phone that is as good as jesus. Everything even the fastest home computers have the occasional lag.
as for rooting, it really just allows you to have some more control over your phone. It's a stepping stone yes, kind of like a gateway drug into android tweaking. But if you can control yourself it'll allow you to simply remove the ATT apps that suck and use a nice and zippy touchwiz (which I actually really like) and because TW is very iphoneish, you should have a good time navigating.
but man lemme tell you, the browser is much better than iPhone. Flash is pretty awesome. The Screen is much much much! better than the 4's and it is bigger which I personally like. I think it hits the sweet spot between big and medium (I wanted a streak but it took way to long to come out, and i'm glad i didn't bite on an import).
The only two apps which are better on iPhone are facebook and MLB at Bat (at bat because of mlb.tv) otherwise the selection is nice on android, and the apps are very diverse.
I think you'd like it, but then again this is just my opinion. I'm more of the tinkerer anyways and I HAD to jailbreak my iPhone to enjoy it.
the captivate has some neat little tweaks that'll keep surprising you (I find new things every day)
choice is yours hope i could help

I also got suspicious about Daily Briefing once I saw that it was updating AP news constantly. I disabled AP News but kept the weather and the stock quotes. In my observation those are not updated automatically (or very infrequently). I think this was enough. I am still thinking about junking entire widget though
Every piece of [email protected] is different, just find the one that fits you best, if you know what I mean. Apple is great but equally the competition. Heck I had the HTC Aria before the Capt. It's was snappier and has a better UI I think, darn screen is just to small. My wife has the I4 and its cool too for what she uses it for.
Okay... thanks, guys.
I won't comment on regarding the operating system, but i'll tell you why pick Captivate.

Let's just say, SGS currently offers nearly everything at the top of the market.
BUT, it would NOT be future proof. Technology advances regardless of any economical drawbacks, there WILL be better phones out there in the future.
Screen - debatable with iPhone4's screen
This really is a territory where personal preference will determine which the better screen will be, the differences are that minuscule.

Camera - 5mp, pretty darn low comparatively to other smartphones but it's adequate/satisfying after seeing the vids/pics
For me, I would certainly pick SGS. This is a bad place to ask for our opinon, it's a SGS dedicated section! (Trust me, you won't regret it. The screen is the dealbreaker)

Seeing as how this is XDA, I'm not surprised everyone is siding with Android/SGS. I'm going to sled a little light on the iPhone since it has yet to be mentioned at all.
Did everyone forget about jailbreaking for the iPhone? The iPhone is just as customizable through jailbreaking as rooting is to Android. People are talking about how the apps are restricted but there is also Cydia and Cydia is freaking amazing.
I definitely recommend you to try and experience both. Reading up on how something is can only go so far. Having personal experience will give you A LOT of insight on how much devices are and which 1 best suits you. Go to AT&T, address the debate that you're having with them and I'm sure they'll gladly arrange something where you can try both devices for X amount of days.

Probably best to stay with iPhone if you don't have a reason to switch.
That said, jailbreaking on the iPhone isn't anywhere near the same thing as rooting the Android.
IE, iPhone users have been waiting a long time now for the iOS4 jailbreak, Captivate users had a root before it ever came out.
Captivate is as simple as putting a zip file on the device, rebooting the phone and applying it. EASY. Not near as involved as jailbreaking the iPhone.

Is android fulfilling all of your needs?

Hey friends,
whats up? How you like Android? Is it fulfilling all of your need? Have fun
Being someone that moved from Palm to the Android, I am fully satisfied! The only thing that I missed from palm is the ability to record my phone calls. But this is not Android OS issue it is hardware issue. So I am a happy Android(HTC Desire) user!
Of course! Everything I need in one homescreen, custom ROMs, plus it beats the hell out of an iPhone!
Most of my needs...
..and for the others we have women
Completely satisfied... Anything it didn't do straight out of the box was easy and painless to add. Having been a BB and iPhone user before, I can safely say Android is by far the best for me.
Although... It doesn't make my coffee in the morning and run me a bath when I finish work, so I've been forced to get married to cover these missing functions...
It has far surpassed my needs!
Even satisfied needs I didn't know I had!
Only drawback I can point to with switching over is there needs to be a way to get out of the cloud if you don't want to have your head, contacts and Calendar in those clouds.
And the lack of Sync with PC for Outlook built in is a major inconvenience.
(I have found some 3rd party functionality here none of it perfect yet)
I used to use my WinMo phone like it was intended, mostly as a communications device and for a wireless hotspot. Sometimes a MP3 player and rarely to get web pages or manuals for the devices I use in my work (Broadcast Video Engineer)
Now on android I have dish pointer that lets me know what satellites I can hit through the camera, I have better web to read and get Manuals where I can zoom much quicker and precisely than I could before.
It automatically will update all the programs I have gotten from the marketplace keeping itself up to date.
And the resposiveness of the hardware (1.2 Ghz) is just a pure pleasure!
It allows me to set the machine up in a sense like format (different tabs for different functions) and the widget is everything WinMo Today plugs SHOULD have been.
I am all for brand loyalty and I understand it is hard to leave a house that you spent so much of your life in but I can't ever imagine wanting to go back or onto the very simplistic and uncustomizable WinPho7.
Android isn't perfect but it sure is a lot better than the other OS' I have seen.
Coming from IOS it doesnt seem as smooth or polished but it has been able to do everything I need...
^^
+1...android has lots of customizations..great features but it isnt just as smooth as my iphone was.

The only thing is miss from my iphone is the ability to listen to podcasts at 2x speed. I know there are some apps out there that have a solution for this but they dont work on my Streak.
I would say i'm very Satisfied with android coming from a iPhone was a big upgrade to me. I like the freedom that we have and can customize pretty much everything. But I will admit that the only things I missed from having a iPhone is the music player and some of the apps were pretty sweet.
Very much!

I guess it depends on your phone and ROM. I use a Galaxy S, and Doc's ROM (fully customized from the kitchen), and my phone literally couldn't be faster. I click something and usually it's done before I lift my finger. Except for 3G (which is pathetic in Australia).

Absolutely! I used an iPhone for a year before switching to Android. A couple months ago, I decided to sell my iPhone so I booted it up to clear everything out, and couldn't figure out how to do anything! Simple actions, like turning on wifi, and finding an app, are multi-step processes there. Android is awesome, simply put.
Android has not failed me so far, not in regards to software. Apps are great, software gets better every update, account syncing makes adding contacts so much easier... I could go on.
That said, I've had my truly great experiences with the software only after I rooted my device, shortly after HTC pushed out their 2.1 Sense ROM for it. Since then, I've used a variety of amazing ROMs, both 2.2 and 2.3, which are much more representative of what Android is capable of when truly optimised to a specific device. I've used Symbian and iOS, but I don't think I'll be looking back from Android any time soon.
Yep! I find it can do everything I want and really fast, plus more. I must say there are some really handy apps out there.
One area which I think could improve is GPS software, I'm talking about offline map GPS software. I use CoPilot and while it's the best I've seen so far on Android, iGO8 on my i900 WinMo is much much better.
Great for multitasking, smooth, very customizable. I love android and will never switch to another os

Android is the best upgrading i ever did, switching from my dumb nokia n97..
The only thing degrading rite now is the android market.. Slowly, day by day, the android market has turned into itunes app market.. Lot's of crap apps rather than really useful apps.. Seriously, what's up with fart apps, stupid bikini puzzle, pointless sexy girl wallpaper apps?? We don't need million stupid apps that cluttering the market.. That is one of the reasons i stop myself from buying an iphone4..
No offense..
it is more than full filing my needs . I do everything with it fun, work, multimedia etc.
Far from satisfied.
Navigation isn't as good as on WM
Keyboard sucks, had to get swype
Can't make calls using phone numbers emailed to me
Email client is soooooo basic, only good thing about it is the ability to connect to 2 exchange servers
Browsing the web is a PITA, go to zoom in, accidently hit a link instead which is too small to read (hence the need to zoom in) and then have to go back and do it again. Also there are many pages/links which it can't handle using default browser/firefox/opera
So many apps, so few decent ones

THE PROBLEM WITH ANDROID THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED - OEMs

This is what i think the real and biggest problem with android is, the battle is not with apple, their os or their phone. The actual problem is this-
"Google has done an extremely awesome job with jelly bean, the 'project butter' has really changed the Android experience, experience is fast and ultra responsive, devices dont lag when u turn them on or when u wake them from sleep. Google Now is pretty instant and gives some delightfully satisfying answers which the software is all about, offline voice typing is also pretty accurate, fast and an actual step forward with voice typing, the animations are wonderful, the lockscreen is simple and easy to use and its pretty fast, and what to say about notifications they are just a treat to use.
But all of what google has done is waste, total waste.
Cause OEMs wont be able give JB to their devices. Why? Because they will be busy to make stock JB look ugly, they will be busy to just change the way the UI looks so that their device can look be different no matter if its uglier than stock, they will be busy to add stupid features like 'direct call' when the call button is just their above the messages(I MEAN ITS JUST ONE FREAKING TAP ON THE CALL BUTTON AS ITS JUST RIGHT THEIR, U R LOOKING AT THE SCREEN ANYWAY SO U CAN JUST PRESS THAT FREAKING BUTTON TO CALL THAT PERSON), features like 'Tap to Top' (CAN'T U JUST FLICK UR FINGER ON THE SCREEN TO SCROLL BACK TO TOP, IT TURNS OUT THAT U CAN BUT OEMs HAVE TO ADD THESE FANCY FEATURES TO SHOW THE WORLD THAT THEY CAN DO FANCY 'CODING'), they have to add fancy and weird lockscreen. I know some features are important to add for ur company like various camera settings that google don't add cause they simply dont feel the need of those settings, BUT WHY THE HELL OEMs HAVE TO ADD THEIR FREAKING CUSTOM UGLY SKINS AND USELESS FEATURES.
I think google should do something to stop this madness, i see tons of bulls*** on internet just to compare the iphone and android. Most of the comments is people saying that they have older version of android on their device and 'not the one shown in the video' but on iphone they have latest software that is even in 'iphone4s' so they still think iphones are better. It ALL ABOUT UPDATES, GOOGLE WORK REALLY HARD ON ANDROID AND THE RESULT IS THAT MAJORITY OF ANDROID DEVICES ARE STILL ON '2.3.3.
Its pretty dissapointing to see how idiotic OEMs behave about updates, skins and fancy features. I hope the google PDK help OEMs to give faster update.
Some comapnies are still struggling to push ICS to their old devices and JB is out, they are busy in working on their new devices and some few people from their team work on OS updates to old devices, and the process is so slow because they are busy in adding ****ty skins and features.
P.S. Other OEMs should learn from HUAWEI, they also wanted to add some features that they feel are useful to their ICS phones, but they didnt ****ed the UI, they have their file manager, their cloud services, some additional camera app features in their ICS phones but they dont **** the UI."
This is what i think, i was pretty angry about OEMs and updates so i shared all my thoughts on a g+ post and this quote is the same g+ post.
Here is my g+ profile- https://plus.google.com/117638526643371847672/posts
I think/hope Google is having this very revelation, since they are supposedly releasing some more Nexus devices in November. I know I'm waiting to see if one of those devices is a slider, as the rumor goes. I'm definitely with you on this!
You are absolutely right. Maybe not every OEM's ROM is bad, but they shouldn't try to make things better because it takes a lot of time and usually makes the system look ugly. That makes Android different on almost every manufacturer's device...

One thing that I have decided that I am just going to buy devices that come under Google's NEXUS program. That way even if I may get not the latest and greatest hardware, I am still assured that I will get updates for at least 2-3 years and instant updates is what we are talking about.
Feel You
Hahahahahha
Anger is good
you were right about every single word
OEMs ruin the Android
trying to make it better
while the only thing happening is Android getting S*** taste instead of vanilla taste
well
on my side
i would prefer if the Stock android was available to all phones beside the OEMs one
in that way we have a choice
also
the Android pure Rom is much better than any other
i came to that after a lot of flashing

Haha, I also was getting myself worked up the other day thinking about carriers: I'm sure they also have a lot to do with how long updates take to come out. And, they get you on a 2-year contract, and then you're lucky if they support the device with updates for even 1 year!
I'm hoping PDK begins to lock down a bit of what they can do. Also, Carriers are a huge problem too. They don't want you to get updates.

You know I see a lot of people thinking that all OEM do is make it look ugly ( to be honest all the OEM and ICS default themes look like crap)
But they do alot more. Take the SGS3 for example. All the nice software that made people excited about it would not be there if OEM didn't add their spin. All the nice features people enjoy wouldn't be there either. I mean if all that stuff didn't matter then people would be running a nexus as it is pure android.

I understand what u mean, i have also mentioned in op that many OEMs feel the need of some features that stock android doesnt have and they can add and they should obviously add them but amount of these features are really low, most of the features we see are just fancy features that show that they can also 'code'.
I know a bit about android ICS (stock) as i make themes for theme engine and i made roms earlier. Its divided into two parts or two UIs, one is the dark part or the dominating part that we see across ICS, the grey backgrounds with blue text, other is the light UI, that is the white backgrounds with blue and black text. I am also not a big fan of they grey part of the UI but the white part is just wonderful. Also no OEMs' ui i have seen is better than stock ICS UI so they are clearly making it worse.
I hope google go full on with their white/light UI in next version of android.
Also i agree to the fact that many required features that a consumer wants these days with software these days are lacking in stock android like some settings, options and features in camera app, that actually all consumers these day want. I have seen many nokia users who still buy nokia phones cause they have these small features to mess with in camera app. There are many things that android team have not thought of added in stock android, and i think the main reason for that is the fear of people declaring their OS as 'complicated' and non-user friendly.
What worse it can get. Now Gnexus may get banned.
From now on Google is going to allow OEMs to gain access to upcoming versions of Android sooner than the general public so that they can get updates out sooner.
OEM skins annoy me as well. Most people care more about the apps than the OEM skin and all these differences between carriers default skins creates some fragmentation. OEM bloatware that can't be uninstalled also annoys me but at least with ICS apps can now be hidden without rooting.
Good point.

But still, Google is doing so that OEMs are ready to push updates along with Google. If Google is gonna give them new versions earlier we can assume they will give 1-2 months earlier and they will still be working on it so they will also give new source code later maybe 10-20 days earlier. So OEMs like Samsung or HTC who take 5-7 months for an update will still not be able to catch up with Google's announcements and updates.

I agree and disagree.. I never used stock roms until i purchased the droid razr. I know blur makes it look better and also realize that motorola has a **** ton of bloatware that i have to freeze but i've been happy with gingerbread and now the ics stock roms. I do however think that needs to include an option to root the device on the configuration when you first setup the device. I think it shouldn't have locked bootloaders or things like that because it is linux underneath the nice ui and you should be able to mod it the way you like without having to hack everything. Long story short, most stock roms do look like crap and are bloated but some do a good job.

Another thing I forgot about is carriers, they need to get their hands out of the software. My broadband ISP doesn't care what updates or OS I am running, they just provide me internet.
Ideally we would get all software upgrades from Google sort of like Windows, but I'm not sure if this is possible with Android. At least just let us update direct from the OEM, carriers shouldn't have to approve updates.
Guys support me and others who are with me and retweet #OmlyNexus and #****AndroidOEMs .
The OEMs don't care what you think, because they want you to run THEIR software - which they will be putting on their phones instead of Android eventually.
That's why Google is pushing their Nexus line to the next level, they know this to be true.
Look up Tizen and read about what Samsung is planning on doing.
With the open source nature of Linux, mfg's don't care about Android. That's why they are getting their customer's used to their "flavor" of Android, whether it be Sense UI or TouchWiz. They aren't spending all this time and money so that their developers can learn to make Android better.. they're getting ready to launch their own projects.
Google knows their time is limited as far as Android being the only major Linux player in the mobile phone business, and it's coming faster than people realize. Firefox, Tizen, Ubuntu.. just watch.
Half of these Android users won't even be on Android in two years, because they are loyal to HTC or Samsung, not Google.
Hence, the Nexus line.

Actually u r a bit wrong here. As people are getting more informed and educated about android they are getting to know it, once they know and love android. They won't buy a new Samsung device with tizen or bada in it. I live in India, people here are slowly starting to know about android. And as u all know India is not one of the developed countries, still if people can like and know android and be loyal to it then why can't other countries' people do the same. We are going into a new era, its not about hardware anymore, firmware comes first. Most of the companies are able to produce good hardware and mostly on a similar level, what matters is the software and OS.

I'll have to respectfully disagree here.
When the Samsung GS4 or the next HTC flagship device comes out, no one is going to care if it's running Android or not, except die-hard Android fans. All they will care about is the new features that the phone offers. And the mfgs are smart, they will make their platform compatible with Android apps, allow Google Market (and others). Look at Amazon, guarantee they will have their own Linux dist. as well eventually
and in regard to "We are going into a new era, its not about hardware anymore, firmware comes first"
Uh, I don't think so. Minus the Nexus crowd, nobody buys their next phone because it is going to have JB, they buy it because it's going to have the newest/fastest dual/quad core, XXMp Camera, the newest 'smart' feature, the bigger screen, etc. Nobody ran out to buy the GS3 because it has ICS...
XDA is about 1-2% (if that) of Android users. And even on XDA, half of the users don't know enough about Android to even matter. Maybe it's somewhat different in India, but my guess is the people you are referring to are just starting to understand what Android/Linux really means, so that isn't really relevant to this discussion.

I don't think a die hard fan of a flagship phone from Samsung or HTC is gonna buy the new flagship phone if the company changes the OS. I know people care about hardware but that doesn't mean they go totally mad about it, not looking the software at all. Btw, play store access is only for Google/android phones.
Also, nobody bought Gs3 cause it just had a quad core or it had a 8mp camera. If Samsung had bada or maybe android 2.1 on it then believe me it would have been samsung's worst selling phone.
Edit: Will u buy a new i7 3rd Gen laptop if it had windows 2000 and a restriction that u can't change it??? For same price that u buy a normal i7 laptop or even higher.

Help me make an expensive decision, XDA. (Nexus 4 v. iPhone 5)

Note to Mods: If this is in the wrong section, I truly am sorry, I just don't know where else this can go.
A note to peasants like me: LEAVE ALL YOUR BIAS BEHIND. Please make good argumentative points, don't just baselesly bash everyone who doesn't think like you. Also, don't just say "uhuh that sukz jst bcuz wow l00zer n00b ur mum" to back up your points.
Thanks.
Ok, now that that's out of the way, on to the elephant in the room:
I'm considering buying an unlocked phone to use for Tmo or Att prepaid plans here in the US. I'm seriously considering the iPhone 5, and the Nexus 4, or a considerably similar phone.
I want you(the community) to help me decide by making some points and just helping me out. This is a big decision and I trust you guys at XDA will help me make the correct decision.
Reasons why I'm considering the iPhone 5:
-Apps developed here almost always before Android, and usually run better on iOS than on Android (Temple Run, Instagram, etc.)
-Some apps exclusive to iOS, like Quizlet (This is a HUGE point, being that my main "studdy buddy" is Quizlet since StudyBlue has a garbage Android app.) (Also, in apps like Flipboard, certain channels blocked to
-iMessage: a lot, and I mean A LOT of my buddies own iPhones, I miss out on a lot of iMessage stuff.
-System-wide color Emoji support (this is the stupidest reason, this shouldn't even be a reason, but whatever)
-Better and much broader range of cases available(LifeProof is a huge bonus, as is Otterbox, etc.)
-Screen looks really nice (even though it's somewhat of a downgrade)
-Notification Center for the lock screen is GREAT imho.
-Find my iPhone and other services already baked in, rather than a standalone app
-Solid construction
Reasons why I'm considering the Nexus 4/Comparable devices
-Google Now
-Ability to make programs default programs, unlike iOS
-Customization
-Swappable keyboards
-Google Maps
-Already have a considerable amount of money (~$15) bought in Play Store stuff that I'd have to rebuy on App Store, plus the money in my Play Store account from credit for buying a Nexus 7 (~$20 left)
If I went the iPhone way, I'd make a complete switch, which means get rid of my N7, which I currently use for college, and replace it with an iPad, which I've heard is better for college.
So, XDA, can you help me make an educated and very expensive decision? Thanks. I'll be monitoring this thread
contract or locked for the iphone? personally i'd go with a nexus for the fact that it's unlocked at a great price, albeit not as great as a contracted phone. also depends if you love to flash or leave it out of the box? iphone only wins for ditching the glass on glass concept

Both would be unlocked. I like flashing new ROMs, but I'll usually wait until they're relatively stable or at least until basic necessities begin to work.
Depends , on what you like to do... But why do you say that is a downgrade the ip5 display, it has the most accurate colors....

For the iphone: it works, good battery life, the newer versions of siri are pretty much tied with google now (whereas the older version was easily beat by google now), and most importantly, it works! (did I mention it works yet? well, it works). Apps tend to run better, and it just feels smoother. I hate to give it to apple, but I have never found an android phone with hardware as nicely done as on an iphone. The con is that it's extremely limited, and I don't like the UI.
nexus 4: just look through the XDA development forums. Then look back at that iphone...need I say more? :good:
added to that, I prefer the UI and the greater amount of customization. Also more great apps are free for android than on Iphone (or at least the ones I tend to use). Overall I feel that an android can do more easier than iphone can, provided you set things up right. I'm mostly looking at the homescreen, but also the settings menu, etc.
So obviously I'm biased towards an android, but I think an iphone has plenty of advantages as well.
Well, I'm sure you'll be told to go to the device recommendation thread - but I might as well post since I have nothing better to do and it's not locked yet.
I've had Apple devices before and have nothing against them. I bought a MacBook a few years back because it was the best choice for me at the time. I've since gotten rid of the "laptop" part of my device collection and use Linux and an Android tablet + phone. I considered the iPhone when I was shopping.
Personally, I do not like where the iPhone is at right now, that's one of the reasons I didn't go with it. I think Apple really needs to "re-think" iOS and do something perhaps like Samsung has with "Simple" and "Basic" modes for the UI - so that they can get to creating something more than a glorified App Drawer. It's an eyesore to me, and though I appreciate that it's familiar to many people, I don't think it's even the easiest configuration to use for new tech users.
I don't really know why an iPad would be better for "college" - I'm going to college right now and have seen people use both Apple and Android tablets. I think the Transformer series from ASUS is the most "college friendly" type of tablet, but I guess it depends on what you're trying to do with it.
If you can't tell, I love learning and playing around with the stuff I have. Android is a better playground for this than iOS which doesn't exactly encourage it. They like to cultivate their system to a high level, but I prefer being able to experiment even if it's possible the outcome will suck.
It really depends on what's important to YOU. I ended up choosing the SIII because I wanted a removable battery and micro SD card and Apple just didn't offer this no matter what. That's what I wanted and what was the "deal maker" for me. I also like that there's so much customisation without having to void the warranty. I can make this the phone I want - the UI is very important for me and while I don't mind OSX (although Ubuntu has done for the general OS look what OSX really ought to do) on a computer, I'm really not a fan of iOS - I feel like Apple's technology and ideas are great, but their software and design aesthetic are lagging - like if Windows 8 hadn't moved on and instead decided to keep the Win98 look so people would be "more comfortable". Because I wanted the removable battery + SD card, that would rule out the N4 for me, too. Personally, I'd still go for the SIII or wait for the IV.
I'm on T-Mobile, I switched from Sprint. I love the service, though I've heard it's not so great on an iPhone. I'd consider the plans and your area and what kind of service there is, too. I have 4G towers all over the city where my school is and get very fast speeds all over campus. But T-Mobile isn't everywhere and I think there are speed issues with the iPhone although if they're getting one, maybe they're changing things ? I don't know, since I'm not in the market for a new phone I haven't looked into this.
i would never suggest to go for a iphone for a simple reason of the difficulty in sharing media over bluetooth. I share a lot of stuff with my friends over bluetooth specially music which is not possible on iphone. i am unsure if the lates iphone 5 has these limitations removed or not. Maybe you could share via whatsapp or other messenger but there are times when there is no network coverage and you want to share stuff and thats when you need bluetooth.
This is well worth watching if you've haven't already, made a similar decision for me quite simple..
...If you like to customize, theme whatever then Get the Nexus, if you want a Phone that does what it says on the tin, and nothing more, get the iPhone.
Nexus 4 for me... Iphone 5 have a lot of problems...
Please ask such questions in the device suggestion thread.

What Do You Want To See in Android 4.3/5.0 ?

There are probably a few other threads like this, but I didn't really see any so I decided to start this one. Just to make it clear, these things are purely a wishlist, not rumors, and some of these things aren't even to be expected. Just purely for wishful thinking and conversation.
I'll start with the things that bother me most about Jelly Bean.
- Better Multi-Tasking & App Integration: If you're coming from iOS, then what we have is probably easy to live with, but its buggy. For instance, apps seem to get "confused" on what's really opened where. For instance, if I share a picture to Instagram from the gallery or Dropbox, and i go home afterwards, opening the respective app will bring me to Instagram, and opening Instagram will bring me somewhere completely different inside off Instagram. It's like Instagram is running twice. What Google needs to work on is actually having Android switch apps, instead of opening it inside of the other one.
- Rotation: I'm surprised I've never seen this posted anywhere else, but if you use an iOS device and you rotate it, the transition from portrait to landscape (or vice versa) is smooth. extremely smooth. don't give me wrong, Android rotates smoothly too, but the transition doesn't "connect" . Because what Android does is rotate the whole operating system (think of rotating a windows pc), whereas iOS rotates just the UI. The operating system itself doesn't seem to rotate. Ex: If you watched a YouTube video on an iOS device in landscape, when it's over or you go back, the landscape video just slides away with the app in portrait "behind" it. If you've seen it before you'd know what I mean. Android should do this also. Instead of rotating the whole OS, just have the UI rotate.
- Update Fragmentation: This issue will probably never be resolved, because google has almost no say so in what manufactures do with android, but 4.2 is out right? So why are 4.1 devices still shipping? Android has a nav bar now right? So why are devices still shipping with capacitive buttons and menu keys? This is why some devs haven't implemented the 3 dot overflow button in some apps I suppose. Also manufactures are abandoning devices that are still capable of running the latest versions of Android. For instance, the HTC Desire Z (T-Mobile G2) , HTC Desire HD (AT&T Inspire 4G) , and the Galaxy S 1 (which was basically a Nexus S) should've all been updated to AT LEAST 4.0. The updates for the S1 should have stopped when the Nexus S stopped receiving updates actually.
- Skins / OEM UI's - Another issue that will probably never be resolved. Skins were completely understandable up until 4.0 in terms of looks. Android is now a pretty good looking OS and doesn't need a skin. Also, if google were to implement most of the CM features, manufactures wouldn't even need to add features. (If it were up to me, all phones would come with CM, lol.) Also, why they choose to replace built in applications that are never updated is beyond me. If everyone kept the skinning to a minimum, we could have timely updates.
App Unification: I've seen this one so many times. Apps like Google Voice/Messenger/G Mail/ Etc. are all separate apps, but preform the same action, or somehow work together. Much like Google Earth, Maps, and Street View. Why not combine all of the similar apps, and save space and confusion.
Responsiveness / Smoothness: I'm gonna keep this one short, because Android gets better and better with each update, but it could be better. Swipe your finger across something like a webpage quickly and watch it follow behind your finger, whereas on other OS's the page will "stick" to your finger.
The "Back" Button: Something I'm sure we all get confused by at least twice a day. It's supposed to bring us to the previous screen until we get to the home screen, but at times, it'll take you places in apps you've never been, skips screens you've been too, etc. Basically, only half of the time it works at advertised.
Auto Brightness Calibration: Everyone's preferences for auto brightness is different, so why not be able to adjust how bright or dim you want it to be?
There are more things that I'd like to see in android, but at the moment this is all i can think about. Feel free to reply saying something you'd like to see in Android 4.3 / 5.
x2 battery performance > it's enough for me now
Some nice suggestions, but yeah Android needs a culture change where a phone continues to receive updates up until the updates surpass the phones capabilities. It sucks to see good phones left behind, I do understand the custom ROM argument but for everyone this isn't ideal

Excellent background process contro that should not eat too much battery easily and touchscreen responsiveness this is the only thing i expect currently.
Everything sounds pretty good except the on screen keys. No thanks.

I think the best way to solve the OEM issue is for samsung, htc, and other manufacturers to make apps which are independent of any framework so that it can be easily updated to the latest android because porting an app is easier than a whole framework
Increase the battery by 10

They need to get rid of the slow and bloated java garbage in the core system apps. Google spouts about optimizing this and streamlining that to improve performance. They prelink the core libraries to further improve performance. And then they go and use a crappy, slow virtual machine language for most of the system.
Java is fine for apps in the app store for developers that dont know c/c++. It should not be used as extensively in the core of android as it is.

I can't think of anything because I fail at imagination so ill just say things I want from skinned androids that should be added to stock.
1. Smart dialer. Pressing numbers should look up contacts like t9.
2. Battery percentage in status bar. I don't know if this is due to patents that aapl has but Samsung and lg get away with having it.
3. Able to remove home screens. I only use 4-5 and I want the ability to remove the rest like every oem skin.
4. Power saver. Battery life is very important and android needs a way to make it last longer.
5. Facebook contact sync. Not sure why this is not allowed on stock Android.
These are my top 5. As for something new I would like them to improve on giving apps permission. I think every app should ask you when you first start it if it can be allowed to use your gps and if it can be allowed to send push notifications. It's the only thing I like on ios and it'll help with a lot of notification spam.
Also, why does the new gmaps look better on ios than on android. That's not acceptable.

My biggest problem is the update process of 3rd party android manufacturers. Android 4.2 has been out for a couple months yet my Galaxy SII was only recently updated to 4.1. I know it is more than capable of running 4.2 as I'm running aokp/cm10.1 right now so I'm wondering why? Even the SIII is still on 4.1 and if a couple of guys (aokp/cm10.1/paranoid android) could port within a month or two then why can't major companies who have hundreds of employees. Just look at what the paranoid android team has accomplished with P. A. 3.0 it's like a new version of android, all done within a few months. That said, I like to have the latest updates on my phone so with this being my first Android phone, I think I might bypass anything that isn't a nexus. Google or somebody needs to put their foot down
Phone: Galaxy SII
ROM: Rootbox (Latest)
KERNEL: Dorimanx (Latest)
Modem: LPS
Yeh. I definitely have to agree with the touchscreen's responsiveness. Aside from that, battery performance really needs to be optimized.

I've never understood why everyone wants oem skins to go away. If that happened every phone would be the same so there would be no incentive for say Samsung or HTC to even make phones. The skins are what makes android. Why would I buy a nexus versus a HTC pure android phone?

I think from now android should work on its AI and Virtual Memory to makes itself so smooth and powerful !
i saw a video clip that compare 2 powerful cellphone Galaxy S III and IPhone 5
in first look Galaxy S III has 4 core and IPhone has only 2 but IPhone is powerful enough to defeat its opponent !
Why ? there's one , only one reason to say the IPhone is too powerful and it's its OS !
IOS is very powerful than android !
if u don't satisfy just go and do a search about it !
i want android to work on it's AI !!
I realize this is stupid but...
With the androidx86 project (that I think is KILLER!!!) I'd like to see them either implement desktop support or do things that would entice more people to get involved. How bad ass would x86 running and then being able to use your phone as a second screen be? Or as remote access? And since they are both natively running (relatively speaking) it would be a real remote desktop as compared to jittery/almost remote desktop on a phone.

the thing about them though, is they're future proof in a way. look how the menu key is becoming obsolete, but it's still going to be on certain devices no matter what.

imho, i think manufactures want to release their new flagship with the newest OS to attract customers (which is really doesn't) . our devs here shows what can be done. with a whole team like HTC/Samsung/Etc has, we should all see updates within a month or less. devs can do it on their own, so why can't they?

i like skins, don't get me wrong. i have a note ii, and i miss sense daily. they just over do it sometimes. i personally get very annoyed by touchwiz, and you have much more freedom on AOSP. i think apps should just be backward compatible all around.
You say the you would like to see the back button "fixed". I have never got why people always say this. For me anyway, the back button has always performed how I would expect (take me back to the previous screen). Don't get me wrong, android has plenty of flaws, but I don't think this is one of them.

One of the biggest reasons I only stick with Google backed Android devices (Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus, etc.). It's the device manufacturers and the phone companies that hold up the updates. I've heard numbers where HTC can get the update out 3-4 months after Google releases it, but Verizon could add another 6 months to that timeline. Not quite sure what the exact reasons are for the delay =(
Considering some of the Google Now features, I'd love to see Google buy/license Tasker so that it becomes and integrated part of Android, at least for some key items:
WIFI, GPS, Ringer settings, Sync settings, etc. Those features would be amazing.
It would also be great if I could say: "Turn on WIFI/GPS/Autobrightness, Sync Calendar, Turn off ringer, etc" while in Google Now and have the action executed.
