How can I unlock my s8+ when lying on the desk - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hello,
I just got my new S8+ and am highly irritated. Most of time my S7edge lies next to me on my desk, AoD not being active. If I want to check something, I simply press the hardware home button on my S7e and it unlocks via fingerprint. Same when I have the phone in my car holder.
Now I don't know how can I wake up and unlock my S8+ while it lies flat on my desk or is in my car holder. Do I need to use oldschool passcode?
Thanks
Felix

You talk like a small kid man. Didn't you see the finger print scanner is at the back instead of front. So you could either get use to it or return your phone.

You can press the power button and use the iris or face unlock as well as the passcode/pattern. Obviously, the iris and face unlocks would require you to align your face with the iris/face scanner. I hope that's not too much irritation for you.

Thank you for your kind words. Yes I knew the fingerprint sensor is on the back, but I didn't think it through that I can't unlock the phone in a convenient way when it is lying next to me on the desk.
Guess I got so used to unlock via home button on my S7edge, that I didn't think about an alternative to it.
If I don't want to enter a passcode, I literally have to pick up the phone every time I want to unlock it, either by FP sensor on the back or by using the iris scanner, right?

sorry for that. To I guess if you want convenience then facial recognition would be best. Otherwise I think maybe Google lock where you can make home require no security.

Same problem here, i had to resort to using a pin to unlock it, the iris scanner would work but only if the phone is at exactly the right angle (which it wont be on a desk). Less of a problem for me as I came from an S5 where I never had the luxury of just pressing the home button to unlock with a fingerprint anyway so i always had to use a code, but it still irritates me.
This is what comes of rushing out a phone that isn't quite ready and having to stick the fingerpring scanner on the back, in the wrong place, at the last minute, instead of taking a few weeks extra to get it under the screen (there was no real pressure to release it right now, it's not like they were trying to beat an imminent iphone release or a christmas rush).
Red screens aside, my only real irritation with it is that fingerprint scanner, and the dirt that collects along the top edge of the glass where it meets the frame.

Go into settings and set home button to unlock with force touch or whatever Samsung is calling it. This will wake display, then use pin, pattern, iris, or face unlock to open your phone. I'd suggest either pattern or pin if you don't want to pick the phone up at all. Not as fast as fingerprint scanner on front but will get you into your phone without lifting it from desk, counters, etc. Also keeps you from having to press a hardware button to wake display. Hope this helps.

Yes, the unlock options are irritating

I have 'Smart Lock' enabled and use 'Location'. I set my office as a 'Secure Location' which keeps the phone unlocked until I move it elsewhere. Big fan of this feature.

I just tried the iris scanner, which worked the few times it tested it. But it seems like after waking up the screen I still need to swipe the little lock-symbol before I get to the Iris/passcode section.
This is now not only 1, but 2 steps more to unlocking. Even 3 steps if you count that I need to pickup the phone.
So from pressing simply on my S7edge home button in order to see my unlocked Home Screen, on my S8+ I now need to:
1. Wake the screen up by pressing power button or hold the home button for a second
2. Swipe the screen to get to the unlock step
3. Unlock via Passcode or pick the phone up to look into it like an idiot
From my point of view this went from SUPER convenient to "that escalated quickly" 3-steps inconvenience.....

Why not try to use the Samsung watch ie the Gear and select Smart Lock?

I understand, but I don't like this feature at all because the very idea of the lock is that only I can unlock it. With "Secure Location" anyone could access my phone, unless I have it stick to me all the time.

very true but I guess then you have to place it upside down for quick finger print touch like I do.

Maybe i can give you some pointers..?
This is my setup. Maybe you can improvise procedure a bit?
Only one step.!
Firstly, i don't use any lockscreen. Not necessarily. Stock or 3rd party (I have a few paid lockscreen options)
Anyway i normally use Gravity Screen app
(i have the paid version, Play store )
In Short it works on either motion or proximity sensor. Battery friendly,
If i pick phone up it turns on.!
if i put phone flat it turns off (sleep) No need for lockscreen.
Also has stock Smart Stay enable in Phone /Settings /Accessibility /Dexterity /Smart stay on. Wave your hand over phone to wake up.?
However,
Now and then i press power key to wake phone.
Otherwise i use above.

You can add your adress or bluetooth device like a security place to unlock your phone without passwords/iris/face/fingerprint.

Use the 'Trusted Voice' option then. Voice recognition. Other than that, I think the answer to your question is to deal with it. It's a cell phone and not a robot. You can only do so much without having to actually pick it up. I think this is what my wife refers to as 'laziness' during her daily rants that I tend to ignore.

[Q] WTF? Access to the notification tray while screen locked?

Who was the wise guy who thought that the notification tray didn't need to be locked with the rest of the screen?
After the ICS update, it seems that my notification tray is sometimes open when I pull the phone out of my pants' pocket. Since this isn't just a notification tray anymore and one can actually do sensitive actions over there, not to mention accidentally closing important notifications, I would say this is a very bad idea. I couldn't find any option to turn this "feature" off.

Well you should not have upgrades to ICS then or done the proper research into what was in ICS cause that is part of the 4.0 Android OS now. Me personally I love it.
So, you are saying there is no way to turn this off? It seems very strange to not have an option for this..

If you enable a screen lock then it will disable that function. Otherwise, it's actually a nice feature to have IMO.

OK, so I set up a pattern now and the issue is solved. But now I have 2 lockscreens instead of 1 :-( . Wasn't there supposed to be an option to unlock the screen straight to desktop (pattern in my case)?

Nope. You don't have two lockscreens, you have a lockscreen and a security screen. It's performing normally.
I know there is nothing actually wrong with this, but it just makes the phone harder to use. I mean slower to make a quick phone call, or quickly open an IM app and reply.
usually..
usually you can disable it, if you have the development function on your htc settings for ics, usually there is a function in the lockscreen part where it asks you to keep taskbar on top or untouchable after lockscreen is on.. try to look on accessibility and security or else download 'rom toolbox' and there should be a function where it allows u to enable or disable this function

Um... besides, you can't "do" anything with it unless you touch the screen. Are you touching the screen while the phone is in your pocket?
yrs,
dkephart
I keep my phone with the screen facing my leg and when there's moisture in my pocket, like in the summer for instance, I'm pretty sure things are happening that aren't supposed to happen
Also, the power button is somehow positioned that sitting down in the car for example accidentally pushes on it.
You could argue that only tight pants cause this issue, but c'moon

Buy an Incipio NGP case, which has a reinforced power button cover.
Never again will you have accidental power-button presses.
It's silly that you want to get rid of such a great feature. My phone always faces my leg in my pocket, and in the 10 months that I've owned my phone, I have NEVER pulled my phone out with the phone unlocked by my pocket.
Thinking more and more about it, it does seem to be a nice feature. I might give it a second chance, despite that only having it for 1 day and already found it open by mistake....

Any way to disable the lock screen altogether?

Hi
Is there a way to disable the lock screen altogether so when one presses the power it goes directly to the desktop without an added swipe? I have this option on my nexus 4....
How do you people wake up the phone quick if it's lying on the table and one can't reach the fingerprint sensor?
That is exactly what I would like to do, disable Lockscreen! Have you found a way to do it? Or has anyone else?
Settings\Developer options\Screen lock.
Try the above to see if it works. I am using an international mate 9 in Hong Kong.
double tap to wake up is the only thing this Mate9 lacks of hope they will bring this back to Mate10 or I will go for LG V30 next year for sure
Mine "Settings\Developer options\Screen lock" has been gray off. Anyway suggestion?

Unfortunately, you have to factory reset to use this setting in this case.
What if you lost your phone? Not a good idea to have no security lock screen at all.

Fingerprint instant unlock without a HW button press first

I am wondering if anybody else has been annoyed by this:
On Samsung Galaxy S7 edge one had to first press a HW btton (home or power) and only then able to unlock using the fingerprint scanner.
On the S8 this is not so. Touching even for a moment the fingerprint scanner instantly unlocks the device!
I noticed that when the phone is in my pocket I would touch the fingerprint scanner inadvertently causing the phone to unlock.
If we look at the iris scanner:
One has to first press a HW button and then utilize this unlock option. But for fingerprint unlock, no...
I think this fingerprint scanner unlock procedure is solved immaturely by Samsung and would like to see if more agree.
Or am i missing an option somewhere? Comments/advises are welcome.
I prefer it that way, although I find it's in such a bad location that it isn't useable.
Hell no, the entire point is that it unlocks instantly. people dont want to be pressing other buttons first, taking extra time and effort dozens of times a day to unlock it. i cant see many people unlocking the thing by mistake by having their hand in their pocket!! It's hard enough to hit the sensor properly even when TRYING to! The fact it unlocks instantly is fantastic, i was impressed by how fast it is (when I manage to hit the scanner properly).

That's the thing. It's fast, really instant.. That's why a momentous touch in the pocket is quite possible to unlock the phone.
I understand why you like it. And agree is useful.
And may be if there was an option to choose instant unlock OR unlock following a screen on first (by a HW button) would have been nice.
Yeah they could add an option for that but i doubt enough people would want it for them to do it
I prefer it like this and the placement isn't bad at all either.

I was only able to unlock with fingerprint about 50% of the time.
I found out that after using a double tap gesture in Nova launcher to lock the screen, it required my pin to unlock. I disabled that gesture and now the fingerprint unlock works almost as well as it did on my Nexus 6P.

All phones with fingerprint sensors on the back will instantly unlock when you put your finger on the sensor. That is the whole point, to quickly and securely be able to log into your phone. For example the Nexus 5x/6p and Pixel phones all work this way. The Galaxy S6/S7 2-step method of pressing the home button and then waiting for the fingerprint to read was a somewhat wonky way of doing things that Samsung is moving on from.
I'm not sure what you mean by "I noticed that when the phone is in my pocket I would touch the fingerprint scanner inadvertently causing the phone to unlock." The phone will not unlock in your pocket with just any incidental touch on the fingerprint sensor. It has to be a registered fingerprint and your finger has to be placed squarely on the sensor. So unless every time you reach down into your pocket you are pressing your finger perfectly centered on the sensor, I find it hard to believe your phone is unlocking due to the fingerprint reader. There is an option called "Keep screen turned off" in Display settings. With this setting enabled, if the phone's proximity sensor recognizes it's in a bag or pocket, the screen will turn itself off after 5 seconds if the power or home button is accidentally pressed, so perhaps you should enable that.

I love this "feature" but yes you're right, it happened to me gazillion time to accidentally unlock the phone in my pocket. My "fix" to this issue is to have the back of the phone facing against my hand - problem solved, I can't touch the sensor that way.
Enjoy your new phone!
The fingerprint scanner works the way it's supposed to. Go buy another phone that has a real scanner & correctly placed (Like the nexus 6p) and test that, then come back.
OP is used to the crap samsung has pulled for many years, front bottom ugly enormous button acting as a scanner. Just look what they've done with the S8/+, Without the button, it's insanely beautiful. I've only owned a samsung within my work, i'd personally NEVER buy one. But the S8+ changed my mind. The position of the scanner isnt even a big problem. Although i'd like to see it in the middle like the 6p and all other correctly placed scanners. But i've got no problems reaching it.
I find the sensor on the S8+ to work very well. I had given up using the one on my Note7, since it failed to identify my fingerprint half the time. But on the S8+ it's much more accurate. And I like that it turns on and unlocks the phone with just a touch (like the Nexus 6P I had before).
I'm even getting used to the placement. Particularly with a case on the phone, the cutout of which helps identify the location by feel, it doesn't seem like a problem anymore.
Works great for me.
Phone is lock in pocket. Pull it out and put finger on sensor and it unlock to home screen..
Works as it should.
Iris scanner works like this if you pick the phone up from wireless charging.
It's really starting to grow on me, especially when Samsung Pay. I don't know how many times I pressed too hard on the Home /fingerprint sensor and ended up closing SP and starting over.

I had a S7 Edge Duos for a day and tried Nova for a short time. I set the double tap gesture and Nova told me about a workaround.
If I wanted it to unlock right away it would ask for a PIN everytime but if I let Nova set a black screen for 5 seconds and then lock itself it would unlock with the finger scanner.
Ontopic:
I totally love that the phone is unlocking this way now. I freaking hated that I had to press a button before the fingertip scanner would unlock the phone and it only lasted 24 hours with me.
Exactly the way I like it. Got used to it on my LG V20.

I hate it too!
I just bought a S9+ and I really hate this feature. I am CONSTANTLY accidentally unlocking my phone. The fingerprint scanner is fantastic in that I barely touch it and it unlocks. Perhaps I just need to delete all of my fingerprints except a pinkie or something weird, so maybe try that. At this point, I just had to turn off my fingerprints together because it was getting sooooo annoying, but I'll probably do the pinkie thing eventually because I loathe having to do a PIN.

LED cover locks the phone

Hey, just got official Samsung LED cover which is real nice but what I don't like is having security set to lock the phone after 5 minutes I got the phone locked each time I close the lead. So I need to unlock it every time after.
Is there a way for the cover to use my settings? It looks like it acts just like power button which force locks the phone (and I do what to keep this behavior for the button).

I guess you have to compromise. Set your auto lock to a shorter time.
I do think the LED case is awesome and the close/lock is not an issue to me. But I do see how it could be a problem to some.

I'm pretty sure there are separate settings for some accessories including the LED cover.
I'm sure I have seen some settings on my dad's S7 Edge and he uses the S-View flip cover with it. I will have to recheck his phone...

There's a LED pattern editor to it but nothing else I found so far.
Sorry off topic but still has to do with the led cover.
Anyone pair the led view case with the whitestone dome glass screen protector? Just want a simple yes they are compatible or no, it will lift the protector is fine. Thanks

Hey Desperex, I had the same problem with my Note 9 but I found a setting that make the cover not lock the device anymore:
Settings -> Biometrics and Security -> Other security settings -> Device admin apps -> Google Pay. If Google Pay is on, the screen will be locked, if off, it won't.
Hope it works for you too!

face unlock

i have now compared op5t an op6
an op6 is so slow compared to op5t
any one else think an feel that it is slow
It's a out the same speed as on my 3t.
I'm sure it'll increase with future software updates
OnePlus 6 is my first OP device but I think Face Unlocking feature works great also with low light. For me, unlocking is really instantaneous.
Mine is instant too. I don't even see the lock screen if I'm looking at it and hit the button, not even the tail end of the animation. If I'm not looking at it, the instant I turn or turn the phone to look at it it's unlocks without hesitation on my phone. I'm very satisfied with the speed and accuracy of the face unlock. Heck, the same goes for the fingerprint sensor.
Well, I can say it's much better than the Samsung Galaxy S8, that thing is garbage!!
I also had the 5t but I don't notice any difference.

well maybe its just mine
will do a reset an see if that help
Is there an option to unlock the screen without pressing the power button with face unlock. I just it where the phone reconnize your face and unlock the screen for you

Yeah but that's still an extra step. I just wanted to be like the finger print unlock, where your finger print just unlock the screen

I got the phone today itself. Even I didn't see the lock screen until an hour ago. It slowed down a bit only enough to show the lock screen. Any idea why it did? I clear all the apps and cache btw.RAM is free.

I have seen it occasionally show the lock screen. Honestly I think it's when I blinked as I got the power button. If your eyes are half closed or closed it won't recognize your face. This isn't 3d face unlock. So it's not that intricate.
Me too, i think that Face Unlock is slower
