what should I do - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I Have a Huawei mate 8 NXT-L29C185B190. Couple of months ago I rooted my android. With TWRP and unlocked bootloader. I by mistake formated my phone with TWRP and then all my data including the Huawei mate 8 themes and icons were gone. The icons were like the older versions of android(messed up). Just a minute ago I got an OTA update. So I removed my root by SuperSU and then tried to update it. But then it redirected me to TWRP. I didn't what to do so I rebooted the device. What should I do to install the update and get stock version? (The update is not installed)

SRK Tool

Before trying to update you might want to fix the problems of your device, get SRK Tool, root your device, then go to utilities and flash the HW Init folder, that should solve the themes and the icons problem, then flash stock recovery and then get and flash
L29 C185 B190 through the Dload method, only after doing all this you should take the OTA without issues (dont worry when you doad L29 C185 B190 root is lost).
You could also try to only flash stock recovery (using SRK Tool) and take the OTA but very much likely the theme and icons problem will still be there, if the OTA update works that is.

Oh ok. What is the hw init folder? Is it like some type of Huawei folders? And if possible can like provide a link on how to do it. I know about the flashing. Its just that I am really scared that my phone may hardbrick. I looked on XDA Developers for this stock firmware but found it on another website. But the thing is that I'm scared if that websites porvides false information

Dont be so scared!

The HW_Init folder contains the folder structure needed so the themes can be applied, it also contains the default themes which are lost when you format Data from TWRP, its a quick fix and the SRK Tool makes it easier for you.

Ok, I rooted my phone(Huawei mate 8 NXT-L29C185B190)(L29B) using the SRK tool before and I did it again. So for the hw init folders I should check it on the internet right? Do u know how to flash it?

This is the website that I found for my stock firmware
P.s thx for you help. I am a noob when it comes to this

Open the tool (SRK tool) then select the option 7-Utility then select option 12 and then 1(mate 8), once the process started be aware of your devices screen, it should ask for root permission for an ADB shell and you have to grant access otherwise it wont work but dont worry you can try manytimes untill you get it right, your phone wont explode o anything like that If all went well , youll be asked to press any key at the end to reboot your phone, after reboot you should be able to apply themes and icons like usual.
About the firmware, this is the link where its being downloaded: http://download-c.huawei.com/download/downloadCenter?downloadId=91645&version=357954&siteCode=pk, seems like its directly from huawei server, you could download it to your PC and explore it with firmware extractor or you could just flash it throught the dload method, if is not right for your phone it doesnt flash it.

The firmware is legit! its straight from huawei, if you download it and extract it you will see a manual from huawei telling about the update and whatnot, its safe to push through Dload.
Your welcome and good luck!

Oh thanks man just one last question before the start the process. So ehen you flash the stock firmware won't the stock recovery automatically be applied and if not is it necessary to flash stock recovery first then flash stock firmware? And theabove firmware link which u put, idit the firmware for NXT-L29C185B190 ( THE 64 GB 4 GB RAM MOCHA BROWN)
And I also heard if it is not the right version for your phone it can hardbrick it that why I am just making sure about the firmware. And when before I flash my firmware should is it need to factory reset the phone

Your welcome.

For the dload method you dont need the stock recovery, I have just learned that the E recovery its always inside the Mate 8 eventhough you have a custom recovery, so you just need to place the update app inside a folder called dload, the folder should be on you external SD card, then what you do is turn off your device and then press and hold volume up, volume down and the power button at the same time until you see a screen telling you that is checking the firmware, if the firmware is correct then E recovery will do its thing and flash the firmware, the stock recovery will be included, you will loose root and the bootloader will close again.
Or you could flash stock recovery just to be safe and then do the upgrade process (dload), you can do that with the SRK Tool, just be sure to install a stock recovery acording to your version of EMUI.
About the firmware, I cant say, I do no own that variant, thats for you to find out, google is your friend!
About bricking, you can only do that if you downgrade the wrong way or if you flash an incremental OTA file incorrectly and even then theres many ways and tools to bring the mate 8 back to life.
My advice is that if you are goin to be messing up with your device, always do it whith an open booltoader, always back up your base firmware right after opening bootloader, back up your cust, oem info and custom bin and always check that developer options are enabled and that Enable OEM unlock and USB debuggin optiond are enabled as well.

dload Update.app method, entering TRWP instead

Hey Guys..
Bought a L29 Mate 8 last week, have been able to unlock, root but now want to install some custom roms..
The installations instructions tell me to go (back) to a stock B1xx rom through the "dload method", and next upgrade to a stock B3xx rom through the "dload" method.
I'm running stock B170, rooted/unlocked right now.
I've loaded a stock B3xx update.app file on my phone, but i'm unable to get the phone to run this update, it either boots normal to system, or when I use vol+/vol-/power it boots into TRWP instead.
Other instructions mention a setting to run update manual going through settings/update but can't find a "manual update"" setting there.
Hope you guys can help me going with this one...
Thanks
You need to flash stock recovery back, use srk tools.

That did the trick, it will "force" manual update now.
Now I run in another problem though, stock rom links for my "NXT-L29C636" are not available, link for C185B170 was still working and the only B320 stock i could find was the one shared by user "bluheart" in his signature "C185B320"
So decided to rebrand the device to C185 with SRK Tool so I would be able to flash these stock roms, first flashed C185B170 through dload method with no problem, and from there tried to flash C185B320 but update does not get passed 5%.
The rom version listed in the device is somehow NXT-C900B170, using the "* # * # 2846579 # * # *" code in dialer confirms phone is "C185 - Africa / Middle East"
Any pointers ?
(edit: tried to reflash C185B170 through download method, also gets stuck @5%)
Thanks
Now in about phone it show C900B170?
Can you get an ota update via updater?
The latest c185B200 so start from this one.
http://update.hicloud.com:8180/TDS/data/files/p3/s15/G1076/g104/v65326/f1/full/update.zip
Or you need to root B170 and change build display and oem info to C185 in srk tools.after this you will be able to dload c185b320

Used SRK Tools to change ROM version from "NXT-C900B170" to installed "NXT-L29C185B170" in the hope this miss match prevented the update, no luck, also no OTA available.
Thanks for the link, will download this and try to get this going first...
(edit: Changing OEM, SRK Tools read the device as AL-10?, changed to C185, fingers crossed)

Had no luck with the C185 roms, they all got stuck at 5%, decided to rebrand back to C636 and dload the original NXT-L29C636B170 and that worked, so will create a TRWP backup from here to fall back on.
Will give the rebranding to C185 another try later, with the rom you provided (i wonder if i went wrong somewhere with all rom downloads named "Update.zip" I might have mixed something up)
Maybe you/anybody confirm I take the right steps to rebrand to C185 and update to the NXT-L29C185B200 ROM provided.
Using SRK Tool: (current: NXT-L29C636B170/Rooted/Bootloader Unlocked)
1-Install TRWP
2-Change OEM from C636 to C185
3-Change ro.build.display.id=NXT-L29C636B170 to NXT-L29C185170 or NXT-L29C185B200 ?
4- Copy NXT-L29C185B200 "update.app" to device/dload
5- Install Original Recovery
6- Use vol+/vol-/power to apply B200 update
8-Install TRWP/ create Backup
9- Root ?
10- Copy NXT-L29C185B320 "update.app" to device/dload
11- Install Original Recovery
12- Use vol+/vol-/power to apply B320 update
Thanks in advance....
Debranding
anyone tell where to email for bootloader unlock if website is not recognizing my phone.
updated to B200
Thanks for your help gm, just made a new attempt and now successfully picking up the updates as a C185.

How to flash via TWRP a stock ROM in my problematic phone

Hi everyone.
I am facing a LOT of troubles with my phone (as stated in this thread).
Anyway now I have again unlocked bootloader, installed TWRP 3.1.1, rooted but I have a strange ROM installed by a service tech shop after the phone became unusable.
The problem is that this ROM does not show an update option in settings so I am stuck at 1st march security patches.
Here attached my actual Build Prop file.
The ROM seems to be a BLN-L21C900B300 (never heard of this and not even found on Firmware Finder) and the fingerprints show a "test keys" rom:
device: HWBLN-H
Display: BLN-L21C900B300
Fingerprint: Huawei/generic_a15/generic_a15:7.0/NRD90M/jslave04010520/:user/test keys
If I try to flash via TWRP a BLN-L21C432B360 (which was my previous stock ROM) it does not work and on TWRP appears the following:
......
write radio image
check_write_data_to_partition
write data error
E; unknown command (errno)
update_huawei_pkg_from_ota_zip: update package from zip failed
updater process ended with ERROR: 7
error installing zip file '/external_sd/update_full_BLN-L21_hw_eu_zip'
I cannot flash the FULL zip file with the core of the ROM but I can luckily flash the data, so I could get back Radio Fm and possibility to install themes....
To make the story short: is there someone who knows what this error is? Maybe I can get a solution.
Moreover: maybe this strange "device: HWBLN-H Display: BLN-L21C900B300 Fingerprint: Huawei/generic_a15/generic_a15:7.0/NRD90M/jslave04010520/:user/test keys" is preventing me to flash?
Changing build prop file can be useful?
Thanks to all.

I forgot to mention: dload not working. Always error.
That's why I think TWRP is the only solution
B300 (at least for the BLN-L24) is the first of two update packages to rollback from Nougat to MM. The first update will take you from the latest firmware to B300 and then the second update will complete the rollback to your device's stock firmware.
dload this package to complete the rollback then do a factory reset and wipe cache partition in stock recovery. After that download and update to the latest firmware and proceed to unlock BL and flash twrp and you should be good to go.

With the files you provide I should "dload"?

Download the zip I linked above from Huawei website. Extract the update.app and put it in dload folder on your external SD card and force flash (power vol - vol +). It will flash all the stock images and return your phone to factory firmware android 6.0 EMUI 4.1. It might bootloop after this but booting into stock recovery (power vol +) and perform factory reset followed by wipe cache partition will get you booting. Then you can OTA update to latest firmware and root again.
Well, I will try this weekend. Now the risk to stay without phone during working days is too high
Ah, BTW, thanks for suggestion.

Since you have nothing to lose right now just try the whole rollback process. Here is the update that the service center used to get your phone to BLN-L21C900B300. You can try flashing that again through dload or skip to trying to flash this. There are two different firmwares listed as the 2nd part of the rollback and you already said the last one I gave you failed so give this one a shot. Let me know how it works out for you:good:

Have you tried the Team MT huawei multitool to flash the images from the firmware? Use the Huawei update extractor tool to get the boot, cust, recovery, system and userdata.img from the firmware you tried to flash and then put them in the unbrick folder in the multi tool. Put phone in fastboot and run the Multi tool and use the unbrick option. I know your phone is not bricked but this way it will flash all 5 images in order through fastboot. You could actually try and flash the most current firmware with this method and avoid having to system update from MM to Nougat.
yes, exactly, I am trying with multitool . another bro suggested me how to do it even if with a slightly different method.
"You need flash the oeminfo via multi tool and then same firmware file for your current version via dload. It should be fixed".
WTF....never sweat so much for a phone. And never had those problems flashing samsung... and I was flashaholic
Yes, I have learned so much about this phone and the flashing/brick/unbrick process in the last 2 weeks.

When I go to multitool "unbrick", it asks for custom.img, but in no update.app of my firmware is present.
Moreover now I just can enter erecovery. It does not boot. I can enter fastboot only. Multitool is now not recognizing the phone. Do you know how to proceed?
I put in dload the firmware .app, but it says "software install failed"
Pheew...I managed to have again that fuc..ng C900B300.
I entered fastboot and repeated the unlock bootloader process. That way the phone got a hard reset and started over. Believe me when I say I tried all the methods I knew.
I think there is something locked somewhere in my partitions (I am not an expert of course) that prevent me to do deep modifications. Now I just can TWRP data but not the core. And again I have no update option. I think I am stuck forever at this stage with 1st march patches and nougat 7.0.
I do not think I will be ever able to have Oreo.
Amen. I am really tired to waste my time with this s**t. Next phone will be again a Samsung or One+. Full stop. Stop chinese brands.
Where are you located, Europe?
Yes
Ok bro I really hope this is it. Full firmware BLN-L21C432B151. I already downloaded it myself and checked with extractor tool it has all the images you need. Since you have fastboot back use the multi tool unbrick again and now that you have all the necessary images cross your fingers it will work.
And I agree with you about the phone. Made up my mind im giving this turd to my sister and getting the OP5T in a few weeks.
Thanks. I will do it this weekend. Today I spent 5 hours to get back my configuration after the hard reset with the apps I use for work. Cannot risk again tomorrow.
In another thread, sashank suggested to change OEM file because probably phone doesn't recognize the firmware I want to install.
It didn't work and lead me to start from scratch with the same strange build.
I will try your method but first I must study better the procedure because I don't want to mess up everything and risking to throw the phone in the garbage (where it belongs in the end...).
Thanks.

Need help fixing an Honor 8. Stuck on EMUI 4.0 after failing with custom ROMs

Hello! So I tried flashing a custom ROM to my friends Honor 8 after reading around a bit and such but it ultimately failed and now we're trying to get it back to the default ROM. We found a ROM download but it was for the version FRD-l09C900B120 which was running EMUI4.0 and Android 6.0. I also read that the "C" version he has doesn't receive any further updates, I'm failing to find anything on the correct "C" version anywhere. If anyone could guide me through the installation process for the correct and latest firmware it would be great!
On another note, the build in eRecovery doesn't seem to want to install the update package. It always fails pretty early on after connecting to WiFi, any fix for that would be great. Thanks!
Thanks for any help!

The custom ROM was Linageos 14.1, so it wasn't anything EMUI based.
I'm gonna try and manually flash the ROM from an update.app that we downloaded from the app Firmware Finder.

You did not make any twrp backup??
You are on twrp recovery right now??
Which firmware number you were on before going to custom??

We did not make a twrp backup (In hindsight we should've....)
We don't have twrp on it right not but can be fixed if needed.
We were on the latest update available to the phone which should be latest today as well. (OTA)
Flashing it manually made the phone enter a bootloop. It didn't even start the firmware. Any suggestions?
EDIT: We got into Fastboot. What are our options?
Right now your best option in my opinion is to flash Boot.img, recovery.img,cust.img and system.img that you will extract from the UPDATE.APP of your CURRENT Rom. Then just try the dload method again and again, it may not accept the firmware you try to flash but in this case just try another, but not a lower one because you need the rollback package to do that

What should we do after we've flashed TWRP? When I tried flashing LineageOS 14 it decided to fail the installation somehow and be at an endless boot animation. So I'd like to get the phone restored to EMUI5.0.
Sorry, what I said was garbage, I just edited my comment, you're so quick lol

Well currently there's a broken firmware on it of FRD-L09C432B943... Or something like that.
I think at this point he's looking at getting a new phone all together.
No matter if the firmware inside isn't working properly, with fastboot you can manually flash each partition that is needed as long as USB debugging is enabled and bootloader unlocked. After flashing these cleans parts you can properly use the dload method , and if you get an error using dload method can you tell me which one is it? At least the device behavior.
I have to sleep, I'll be right back on the morning hope you'll make it this night , if don't , please be more specific and accurate when you describe the errors you faced, that way we will be more efficient when answering

Currently there's no working OS on it so I'm gonna see if I can find a firmware that I can flash. Do you have any idea where I can get one?
Yeah on honor official site: Hihonor
Or with firmware finder

If you need a full firmware then you should visit official honor site..
If you flash LineageOS on a phone without OS it won't work just because LineageOS patch the current installed System, if there is no system there is no way it will boot

I can't find any Honor 8 FRD-L09 downloads anywhere on the Huawei sites or Honor sites. They must've removed the downloads just like they did with the Honor 7..

I get that now and I know how to proceed in the future.
On another note, I got a good UPDATE.APP available but it refuses to install using the dload method because the versions are different. Does anyone know which partition the USERDATA.img file goes to?
You don't have to flash each single partition but dude in my opinion it's better to flash the whole UPDATE.APP, just use the rollback package and flash a lower EMUI.
Another thing: I'm currently on honor official site and I can download firmwares, you're searching in the wrong place.

Again, thank you, it worked flawlessly installing and it updated instantly. You saved me from a lot of worrying and anxiety about breaking my friends phone lol.
I'm really glad to read that dude
thanks for the firmware been looking for it for very long!
btw you just saved another honor 8

Any possible way to unbrick my phone?

Hello, guys. I bought two of these phones. BLN-AL30 VERSION is the one that I was using for a while. I tried to unlock its bootloader and it was a complete success. I remember that my phone said BLL-L22 in its about device section and not BLN-AL30 though. I proceeded to install TWRP and rooted it, I also backed up all the partitions so I decided to go for the elite version (TWRP, for I wanted to install their room). Everything was ok. I installed the elite rom which I thought was cool and I used it for a while. Then I decided to switch into slim ROM. I had made the proper back up also and still have them files. I backed up everything because I realized the elite ROM asked for a complete wiping. The next thing I realized was that my phone wouldn't be able to install the slim rom because I had this error:
Unable to wipe vendor /vendor command not allowed.
It also happened with product and version partition. And sometimes it said unable to mount /vendor. (The same for product, version)...
Now, I can't install any other room because of that. And I have downloaded many update.app files to recover and heal my phone as stock but it seems impossible. I have bought another honor 6x and it's coming the next month because I loved this phone but also because if bricked but unrecoverable I'd like to have its parts in case of some repair needed. Is there anyway to recover it? it's so sad. I never thought elite rom would do that to my phone. I assure I followed every single step from its thread. Thanks in advance. Hope you can help.
try to formate data then go to main main screen reboot to recovery now wipe everything. if it is not working then try previous version of elite TWRP or Berlin TWRP. if nothing works then u need to do dload. but u r saying dload is also not working still u have two solutions. download oem info of another region and flash it via TWRP u can try oem info for bln-l22c675b340 https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-6x/how-to/guide-debranding-to-india-variant-bln-t3679402 now Google for bln-l22c675b340 firmware download it then unzip update app file. now Flash oem info file in TWRP then using sd card flash update app by pressing 3 buttons. this time it will install for sure. if oem file failed to install then extract the oem file then download srk tool put both files in restore folder connect your phone in fastboot restore oem info will work for sure. there is no way to brick honor 6x lot of rescue methods available if this fails still you can use hwota8 method to upgrade oreo.
Thank I'm going to try that
Where can I find the Oreo update thing?. Thanks

Yeah, is it full firmware uploaded on proteammt site. I know the usual size is around 2,40GB, but that's the only firmware uploaded there.
Anyway, you can't directly "install" the update like an app. I'm aware of a method that let you flash system, boot and recovery images through fastboot mode, but sincerely in way to avoid any kind of issue, i suggest you to use dload method to flash B360-PV (point version), and then update to B375 by Huawei's sysyem update app.
You can find first Nougat firmware to flash with dload method here http://update.hicloud.com:8180/TDS/data/files/p3/s15/G753/g104/v82485/f1/full/update.zip - once done, download updates until you'll arrive to B375.
thank you so much im gonna try it later
so i did the sd card thing with this one "You can find first Nougat firmware to flash with dload method here http://update.hicloud.com:8180/TDS/data/files/p3/s15/G753/g104/v82485/f1/full/update.zip" and now it boots againe but i dont know where i can get these updates that you told me to do after.
edit: haha i got it now thank you soooo much you safed my life dude
Glad that you've solved it man! Nothing hard to do
