Does anybody know why Open GApps still hasn't added support for the Pixel and Pixel XL?
After playing around with my new Pixel XL all day, I don't entirely see the problem stopping Open GApps from working. Can they not just tell the installer to install to /system/system on Pixel devices? I know one of the major issues is that there is no easy way to tell which slot to flash to, but I feel like if someone is flashing GApps, they are probably competent enough to switch slots in TWRP, and if they don't, it'll just install GApps to the other slot, which shouldn't hurt anything.
As a side note, does anyone know if it's possible to build an Open GApps package of our own that would flash to /system/system of the currently selected slot? BeansGapps aren't customizable and don't contain all of the apps I want.

But it hurts ppls brains when they have to answer the question of "Why are my gapps not loading" kinds of questions people raise often because they dont like following directions.
Also, I'm not sure. I think there is a modified OpenGapps installer floating around the forum somewhere that can be used to install to Pixel. I thought I read a not to long back, but not 100%.

I cannot find any either, and I wish there was. I much prefer to be able to remove any kind of aosp and lineage app and replace it with Google's app. 1st world problem I know, but it bugs me that the aosp and lineage app is there on the rom of my choosing. I want an easy way to flash the Google apps and replace them in the system partition.

I actually figured out how to mod it myself and could give you a modified package if you want. I don't even use the flashable packages anymore because I started building my own copy of Lineage with a bunch of mods and Open GApps included and configured exactly how I want.

Wow, that be wonderful.
I basically want stock packages if possible. That replaces the aosp and lineage ones. If that's what you have or could give it would be much appreciated. If you have a guide or cheat sheet on how you did it, that would be ok too.

Give me like 15 minutes to do it an upload it and then it will work exactly like a normal Open GApps package and you can use a gapps-config.txt file to configure it exactly how you want.

Here you guys go: https://mega.nz/#!4owiRa5a!j4hbQrGlK0Ugz6HoTn33kcKpkaauajKeMcXkzBVxz9g
It's the stock package and it will work on the Pixel and Pixel XL (and theoretically any other A/B device). You can use the standard gapps-config file to configure the installation. Also, it needs to be flashed on which ever slot the ROM is on, not the opposite like TWRP.

I've never modified the Aroma one but I assume it's similar. All you have to do is open the install script and replace "/system" with "/system/system", but you can't just replace all because there are several instances of "/data/system", where it would change to "/data/system/system" incorrectly (you could probably stop that with regex). Also, there were two lines with "/system" in regards to mounting that don't need to be changed (I don't remember the exact line numbers but you'll probably know as soon as you see them).

So,
I think Open-Gapps finally put support in for Pixel and all other A/B partition devices. I found this in the Installer.sh code for their latest (5-28-17) super package for ARM64
# Detect A/B partition layout https://source.android.com/devices/tech/ota/ab_updates
if [ -n "$(cat /proc/cmdline | grep slot_suffix)" ];
then
device_abpartition=true
SYSTEM=/system/system
else
device_abpartition=false
SYSTEM=/system
fi
That is something I could not find in the Installer.sh file you modified. Unless you took that out and manually changed system/system?

I know that but what I consider stock is a ROM that hasn't been messed with at all.
I normally run Cyanogen Mod 7 but it's not available yet.
No, I don't like the crap bloatware apps.
Thing is, I will not die without Hulu and it's not enough reason for me to grab the first thing that comes along and install it.
I am actually enjoying the stock rom on this phone. Can't do everything I am used to but, I have to say that it's been pretty nice.
I will likely consider Cyanogen when it comes out for this phone but I am going to have to think pretty hard at this point. That rom has caused nothing but issues for me on multiple phones in regards to GPS which I rely on quite a bit. I know there are fixes and I got my GPS working after a lot of hassle on my Evo but never had success fixing it on my Inspire. Been nice having my GPS working without an issue on my Skyrocket. So... At this point, I just don't want to mess with the stock rom until I have a chance to evaluate it more.
My phone is rooted and that seemed to be all I needed to edit the needed files in the past but I guess not in this case.
Didn't Hulu come out recently and say they are supporting all Android devices now or was that Netflix?

I agree the Stock rom on the SR is great thats why im not even worried about not having 5 or 6 roms to choose from. i thinks its pretty nice as is. but i like to be able to edit certain files. and i think all you need it root explorer and you CAN edit pretty much everything on the phone.
but i didnt notice that you cant edit the build.prop, or the libs. i had to pull the build prop and edit on my comp and push it back.
and CM7 is a buggy nice little rom one of those things were you deal with the problems cuz its so damn nice. same with miui.

What did you change in the build.prop? The manufacturer, the model screen settings? I have done this on multiple devices including my Honeycomb tablet. My HoneyComb tablet (Acer A100) is running stock rom and I know I was able to edit the build.prop on that just using ES Explorer.
Let me know what to change and I will give it a whack, after backing up the build.prop file and making a nandroid

may i ask what files you are seeing in the Lib folder on the com.adaobe.flashplayer.
you shouuld have four files in there already right? i have seen it where it is empty sometimes and that means this wont work. ALSO if you unistall flash and reinstall flash 11 it repopulate the lib folder and i have had luck with this as well. once you get it will stick though. you wont have to this every reboot or anything.

The Google Now Installer/Restorer v1.1
Purpose
There have been a lot of users with issues installing and uninstalling Google Now for ICS. This is my solution for those users.
This is only an installer for the many different variations of Google Now that were created in this news worthy thread: The Google Now for ICS Project
This installer allow user of different types of roms and devices to quickly install Google Now to see if it works for them and if it does not, it allows these users to restore their original Google Search.
This thread is not and will not be about issues with specific modded Google Now apks, go here: The Google Now for ICS Project for that. I have no problem incorporating new apks into the installer. But I will not attempt to deal with issues outside of the installer.
Testing(Green = working, Red = not working)
(Need more people to test as many different devices, roms, and recoveries)
Devices
HTC EVO 3D
HTC EVO 4g LTE
Roms
OTA_Shooter_ICS_35_S_Sprint_WWE_2.89.651.2-2.17.651.5
Tranquility rls1b
Recoveries
CWM 5.0.2.0
TWRP s-on
So if you experience any issues, I will attempt to help, but understand that I if you are not setup the exact same, I may not know what is wrong.
Touch recovery is not active in this aroma installer, so use up and down to make a selection and the power button to confirm the selection.
Requirements
Rooted
ICS
CWM (only recovery tested, others may work, you let me know)
Instructions(should already know this, but here you go)
1. Transfer .zip to the root of your sd card
2. Boot into recovery
3. Select "install zip from sdcard"
4. Select "choose zip from sdcard"
5. Select "GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
6. Select "Install GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
Once the installer is up, the rest should be self explanatory, if not just follow the prompts.
I hope this helps someone.

I don't think it has anything to do with sense or touchwiz, the modified Google Now was modded for AOSP, which doesn't have either, but has worked on HTC and Samsung.

Since it won’t let me post to the forum I thought I would just do it this way. On my Verizon S3 I’m rooted, unlocked, OTA kernel, running a stockish rom (cleanrom) and CMW 6.0.1.2. The installer said it worked but it broke Google search. In the installer it said everything was fine but nope. I went to do the restore and it said it couldn’t find the backup so I went with the one provided and that worked fine. When setting up I chose the first one which I think was v7 for arm7. If I chose wrong I’ll try again but otherwise I’ll just wait for an updated version. Unlike others I’m in no hurry and was just testing it out on my phone. If you want more info I can try to install it again and try to provide whatever you might need or want.

What do you mean by it broke Google Search (what were the indications that it did not work)?
When you restored did Google Search work again?
Check if you hae the follow "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" in your "/system/app"
Are there other files with this same name?

How much space does it state that you have free in the /system directory?
It would seem that you don't have enough space in your /system directory of your internal memory.
One thing to try to see if this is the case, when you do it manually, don't modify or add any files to /system/usr/srec/ directory

To get the total /system directory size you need to run the following command in a program like "Terminal Emulator" or "aShell":
df /system

Yes I have that GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in /system/app and yes it is without the _usa after it. On the line under it it has the odex version. Then the Google search widget apk and odex. It is this way with before and after I try to install.
Just tried it again choosing mikeyxda v7 it says created backup ok and return status 0. Google now installed return status 0 once the phone boots up it says “unfortunately, Google search has stopped”. I also get that message no matter how i try to search or tap on the google app it puts on it. Double checked the permissions from the main thread and all permissions are set right, if that helps. Went to restore and it says I never backed it up but I can use the generic one which I select and get again return status 0 for everything and once the phone comes back up Google search works just fine again. Hope this helps.

That's good to know. I see that the problem has to do with your system being odexed.
The reason it FCs is because when replacing the Google Search apk there is no matching modified odex.
This is modified for deodexed roms.
Check on this thread and ask about a modified odexed velvet.apk and velvet.odex

I'm using GN on an odexed ICS ROM, no problems. Just had to delete the *.odex files for the apk's that the installer replaces.

This should probably go in some general Q&A forum, but this is by far the most helpful community I've come across so I wanted to try here first. I've finally got my Ubuntu box up and running again (upgrading to 14.04 wasn't pretty) and was able to build for both my 700t and my n5 without error, but I'm afraid to pull the trigger and flash it. I'm building straight CM for the tablet and AOSP for the phone, so what is the worst that could happen? I haven't gotten either of them to run in the emulator, but I'm not completely sure that is even possible. Any insight you may have would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Just thought of this, since I'm running Crombi ROM2SD, could I just install my zip on external, and then refresh the right kernel?

The worst thing that can happen is that you brick your device, but you must do something sufficiently stupid for that to happen. I can't say anything about your phone, but for the TF700T, as long as you have a working recovery, flashing a ROM won't brick it. You may want to create the nvflash blobs if you want to have another safety net - it is possible to brick the TF700T if you force it to boot to the recovery and the recovery is broken.

That's normal - ARM devices are just too different, and the emulator is just another different device.

See my Android dual-booting thread in the dev subforum. I originally developed ROM2SD to be able to test my self-built ROMs without breaking my working installation.

Thanks _That, I appreciate your help! After reading your post and the f2fs post, i thought i was in the clear, but i still managed to screw something up. i'm unable to get the tablet to boot off of external, regardless of whether its my ROM or CROMBi. I see a "segmentation error" listed in the output from the the preinit, and then it always boots to internal. I thought maybe i got the mount points reversed in recovered, so i reflashed recovery, but no luck. i also tried deleting the preinit script and then reinstalling CROMBi, but i still get the same error. any thoughts?

For some unknown reason, dynamically linked executables don't work for preinit in KitKat. So if your *internal* ROM is not stock 4.2-based (I have no data about 4.3), the only way to run a preinit script is to use a statically linked busybox.
You still get that fault with a static busybox but it seems to copy files fine.
@psudeke you can compile the static busybox yourself simply with make static-busybox in your build folder - or just steal mine from /system/boot

Your fault may come from one of the programs that you call in your script (did you forget to prefix some line with "busybox"?).

it comes from the ls -l /init* which indeed doesn't have the busybox prefix but if I do it gives some other error I forget now
Anyway it doesn't harm the boot process - just an error message

Internal is the 5/17 build of Crombi, and its a brand new install. with a full format of the data partition (which in my haste to get this working yesterday, i wiped out my nandroid from right before i tried this).
is there any connection between when the internal is flashed compared to the external? in other words, if i reflash the internal rom, it should still recognize an existing external rom? hope that makes sense, i'm still shaking off the effects of a little too much whiskey last night.:laugh:

No currently if you reflash internal it will only see internal. You need to reflash external for that to work.

Ahh, thanks sbdags! that fixed the issue with ROM2SD. i got that impression when i pulled the preinit and saw it only had an entry for internal. but, i'm still very much in a learning phase so i didn't want to jump to a conclusion.
and after getting crombi to boot on external, i swapped sd cards and my build of CM11 actually booted! now the real learning process begins as i figure out how to customize it.

Be careful what you wish for, I've got a laundry list of questions ranging from basic Linux commands to the nature of the multiverse, lol.
I do have one question out of the gate about the update-binary file. I'm trying to add a couple apps to either the system or data folders, but I'm not sure what commands are available from the stock CM file. I think for the most part by looking at your updater-script file I can figure out the commands to do what I want, but given the little I know about this and the size difference of the binary file between CM and the one i was looking at of yours, I'm curious. Is the best way to see what's available CM's git? I basically just want to install a different Launcher and Viper instead of DSP manager for sound. Do I need to study up on edify to look at the binary or is there an easier way?
Thanks again!

yes the easiest way to do it is just make 2 folders with your extra apps in it say /extras/app
then add the following to the updater-script (you don't need to touch the update-binary unless you start using aroma)
package_extract_dir("extras", "/system");
delete("/system/app/DSPManager.apk");
delete("/system/priv-app/Trebuchet.apk");
What that does is copies the extras/app folder into system and deletes your unwanted apps
note apps can be installed into 2 folders /system/app or /system/priv-app
similarly you can install your user apps into /data/app but this is dangerous with launchers as if the user manually uninstalls it you can't do anything on the tab

Thanks again! i can see how this becomes addicting fast :fingers-crossed:
@sbdags do I need to mount data before installing anything to the /data/app folder? I saw in your updater-script this line, and i'm assuming i need the same:
Code:
mount("f2fs", "EMMC", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p8", "/data");
one other quick question (hopefully), I saw in the XDA WIKI that i can possibly test the script using the update-binary, do i have to do this on the tablet itself? i spent all afternoon trying to fix a problem that amounted to an errant quotation mark in my script (and i knew it was something like that too. too many years of non-terminated string errors to not look there first:laugh, but the only way i could find to test it was to rezip the file and flash. any suggestions?

The system image files can't be extracted correctly. If you have a root explorer on your phone you can copy off the /system/framework/framework-res.apk and /system/priv-app/SystemUIGoogle/SystemUIGoogle.apk. if you can use adb you can open CMD window on PC and adb pull /system/framework/framework-res.apk and adb pull /system/priv-app/SystemUIGoogle/SystemUIGoogle.apk

I have a couple of things to try as far as mods go. Rather than doing onesie twosie mods at a time I'm trying to come up with a Aroma and ADB installer with several mods to choose from. Without a custom rom, I have no binary installer to use as a basis for an Aroma update-binary-installer. I took a stab at creating one but have no idea if it will work. With both the Aroma and the adb method, you need to install the base first. Then you can try some others. Magisk is another complication.
Aroma installer of course you flash in recovery. Base is the very last selection. I could try the binary from the pixel. Maybe it is close enough.
Aroma
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=962021903579498645
ADB installer- unzip it on your PC. Run the TulsadiverModsInstaller.bat. There will be a menu to choose from. After the Base is installed your phone will reboot. You can then continue to install mods. Your SuperSU should ask you to give adb permission to run as root. After flashing the base, look to see if you have 4 columns in the QS pull down. If you don't, it didn't work, probably because of Magisk.
ADB

I need someone willing to try these.

I created a script that'll ease Custom ROM installation on A/B devices. The script is generic and will work w/ any rom, device.
General flash instructions:
-Flash OxygenOS
-Flash your Custom ROM of choice
-Flash Finalize.zip
-Boot to System
Download finalize script from here
#######################################
For the intellectuals: This script copies firmware to both slots, clears dalvik-cache and deletes the useless India partition.
Hope this saved you guys some headache while flashing ROMs.
Good job

There's Finalize.zip I found and I think it is easier. Bacause all you have to do is flash the zip file after installing OOS and ROM with built-in TWRP, then format data and reboot to system. No reboot to recovery in between and save you time.

General flash instructions:
-Flash OxygenOS
-Flash your Custom ROM of choice
-Flash Finalize.zip
-Boot to System
Download finalize script from here
#######################################
For the intellectuals: This script copies firmware to both slots, clears dalvik-cache and deletes the useless India partition.
Hope this saved you guys some headache while flashing ROMs.
