Hi All,
I got the samsung infuse by exchanging the HTC inspire which had a horrible battery life.
I love this phone and would like to keep it, but the very poor Data speeds and somewhat poor WIFI signal strength is bugging me.
Any suggestions ?

crappy wifi is normal... sorry. everyone has it
Crappy wifi is normal???? Mine is perfect on stock rom.
Yes, my wifi is also excellent since the baseband update. No problems. Great range, strong signal and throughput.

Are you guys on g or n networks?
My wifi is fair to good. For me, it certainly isn't an issue were I would take the phone back. My main issue was the constant lock ups and reboots from the stock browser. But since that update last week the phone has been running really well and no lock ups.

My wifi is average, at 30-40ft though 2-3 walls I get 2 bars but doing speedtest i get maximum download and upload. Maybe you should try wifi analyzer and see if you can connect to a better channel.

I'm getting an extra bar now it seems... although the difference is not major, but its improved. Got the UCKE3 update, after contacting AT&T to push it to my phone
My WiFi gets good signal strength throughout my house, 50+ feet I still have 3-4 bars; however, sitting within ten feet I still only get 1.5Mb down MAX. My h+ speeds are the same... It is terrible. My Captivate is much faster on the same network.
Any ideas?
Hello, I am having some issues with my Infuse. When I am connected to my Wi-Fi, Browsing the web is very sluggish and YouTube videos are pretty much out of the question for me. I'm just wondering if this is a hardware malfunction or just the infuse in general? Is there any kind of tweaks that I can use to speed up the internet connectivity via Wi-FI? Or something I can do to my router settings to speed this up? I can sit right next to my wireless router and it still doesn't do any good. The speeds I am getting on speedtest.net mobile app are:
Wi-Fi = Ping: 71ms DL: .43Mbps UL: 1.11Mbps,
AT&T 3g(I do not have 4g connectivity where I am at) = Ping: 181ms DL: 2.77Mbps UL: .62Mbps
Laptop on Wi-Fi = Ping: 52ms DL: 5.27Mbps UL: 2.48Mbps
*NOTE* This is on the same wifi connection and on the same server.
Change your modem to KK3 and set your router to WPA2 encryption cause wep is junk
Which Modem+ROM+Kernel is OP currently using please?
Not exactly sure on which modem or kernel right now as I'm at work, can look when I get home. I am on the infused v2.2.3 rom by gtg. Whatever his rom comes with is what is on my phone. I will also try those router settings when I get home, thanks for the replies.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Well I believe it's KI3... and infused kernel.
So all I can say is the modem you have is what works best for me, so that's fine, although some people report that KK3/4 work better for them.
As far as the rom goes, gtg does BRILLIANT work and I have much, much respect. For my particular Infuse 4G and location, however, I never got good Wifi results with Infused. Don't know why.
You'll find differing opinions everywhere, but I have the best wifi reception with MIUI, but there are too many other things about MIUI ROMs that bother me, so I don't use them. I find it unstable...CM7 is also great on wifi for me.
If you can't get results with infused, try another rom!
For network, try APN trick or Thunderbolt...
hope you work it out!
Well today while I was on my break I did another speed test and got pretty amazing speeds for AT&T 3g. So I think my issue is just wifi. Is there a thread you could point me towards to try flashing another modem to see if it fixes my issue? What exactly does the modem control?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
diablo009's CWM-flashable modem thread is stickied in Dev.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342978
To be honest the question you're asking is a bit above my understanding, but from what I can gather:
-Modem is a piece of firmware that interacts with the radio hardware in the phone
-Affects signal strength and performance, data speeds, can affect battery drain because certain modems will tax the battery more/less
But not sure about wifi effects, really. In any case, I've always found that switching ROMs and kernels is the only way to achieve any significant improvement in wifi performance...but that's just my experience.
Thank you for your help. I will try a different modem and/or rom and/or kernel and post my results after doing so. Hopefully I can solve this issue. I just don't understand why I get good data speeds when connected to 3g with a good signal but when I am at home on Wi-Fi it just craps out. Again thanks for all the replies.
Just flashed KK3 and although I am getting better wireless reception, the dl and ul speeds are still the same. Give or take a little bit. Is it plausible that this is a hardware issue?
Yes it's plausible. But probably not really one you can do anything about.
The infuse's wifi reception seems to be a weak point of the phone, at least against other phones that have been in my house connected to my router. Maybe poor internal antenna quality/placement?
Best option is to play around with different ROM/Modem/Kernel combos until you find one that works for you, imho.
Another thing you might try (I did) is putting a higher gain antenna on your router. Most stock router antennas are between 2-5 dBi... you can find indoor ones up to around 10 dBi...
I think of it using a metaphor: wireless signal = sound waves
The router is trying to talk to the Infuse, but the Infuse is hard of hearing, so the sound (signal) isn't getting received very well. Ideally, I'd like to get the Infuse new ears or a hearing aid... but since that's not possible... I'll just give my router a megaphone (antenna) so it can shout a louder (stronger) signal.
...That was a bit silly, actually... hehe.
Anyways, good luck! I relate to this issue cause I've been there many a time.
Well it can't possibly be my wifi router or isp. The download speeds on my laptop are pretty good. I get good wifi reception on my infuse(full bars) but my dl and ul speeds are just crap. My brother has a cheap android phone on boost mobile and when I run a speed test with his phone on the same wifi network I get around 3Mbps down. It must be a hardware faulty. Is there anything else that I could try other than a different rom/kernel/modem? Anybody know how much Samsung charges for repairs?
Don't blame your phone or rom to quick. I noticed my problem came from the Internet itself. I had to call att to fix my slow speeds by resetting my connection on their side. It could always be the Internet providers fault as far as your wifi goes, and network is a whole other story.

wow, I didn't know that.
I changed my home's router to WPA2 and the speed improvement on my Infuse is shocking. Switched back/forth a number of times to verify and download speeds went from 7-8Mbps to 14.2Mbps. I feel stupid but am happy nevertheless.
thanks!
(ha, now everyone in my family will have to change their device security...xbox (son1), Playstation (son2), AppleTV(me), iP4s(son2), laptop(2, wife), nook color CM7 (me), imac(me) and I'm sure there's more!!!)
You should always use WPA2 when securing your internet connection over your router regardless of what you use your internet for. This is how we keep assholes from stealing our internet connection. Always run a speed test from www.Speedtest.net to be sure your getting your max mbps you payed for, otherwise make the call to Whoever, At&t f'd my line up yet again saying something about my modem wasn't updated which is complete bull**** cause they never send out modem updates, and my speed was running at 0.91mbps instead of 6.56mbps, said I needed to reset my modem and took me through a 30min process just to get my speed back to 6.56mbps.
Having a Dual Band Router and Dual Band Internet card may provide even better results. You can always use 1 of the bands and have your family use the other band.
Well I just can't find an issue with my actual internet. My computer gets decent speeds. My Xbox gets an awesome connection when I play it. My brothers crap android phone even gets better speeds when I run a speed test on it. I just don't understand why it would do it to my phone. I will see how wpa works here in just a bit but I don't see it fixing my issue.

Is there anyway to change any wifi settings on the phone itself? Other than the options in the settings menu?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Your phone doesn't allow you to really change any major Wifi settings, Just add Network connections. Any settings would have to be changed on the routers settings itself. Sorry I couldn't be much of help.
Edit: Woops! Actually if you open up the Wifi Settings and tap the menu button click advanced. It allows for extra settings for setting up a connection. Might help you if you need to put in a specific port, DNS server, Proxy, Static Ip, Ip Address and etc.
Any help at all is a lot for me. I'm just going to have to conclude this as a hardware issue. I just don't see how though. Thanks to everyone who has replied, one thing I learned is how much a difference WPA2 security makes haha.

can you talk and surf on photon q without using wifi or 4g access like the sgs 3 i think its S-evdo that allows this
anyone that has this phone already confirm this ?
TIA
Don't know about this 'S-evdo' thing, but none of the CDMA/EvDO phones I've ever had were able to do this. I just tried it on my Photon Q and still no.
It probably works on LTE, but I can't test that since Sprint doesn't have LTE coverage where I live yet. WiFi still operates fine.
Hope that helps!
Whats weird is that i tried this on my photon the other night and it didnt work. Tonight, i was able to make a call AND pull up the internet while on 3G. Connected to Airave if it matters. During the call the 3G icon never left like it used to do on all my other phones.

Don't trust the icon. lol
Edit: Just called a 1-800 number to test this and ran a speedtest.... I can confirm that 3G does work while in-call; 500kbps which is impossible over 1xRTT.
Evo lte can do it
And it depends if the towers have been upgraded for jt
Wonder why this wasnt pushed as a feature. I got over 2 MBits doing this connected to my Airave. I have noticed a slightly longer delay in voice when using data at same time. Could just be my imagination i guess.
Does this really have something to do with the tower or more to do with extra radios in the phone itself?

Maybe because if you're connected to one of these Airave things, you're near an internet connection and could probably just use wifi. Doesn't really seem like a very appealing feature.

What? I dont believe the Airave is what makes the voice / data at the same time possible. I simply stated the speed I got to show how well the simultaneous services work under great conditions.
So then it is possible just as long as the tower your phone is connected to has been upgraded to allow this and this phone does support it???

I think it only has to do with the phone itself. More than one radio in it is the deciding factor. Actually, I have my phone set on CDMA/LTE mode, I wonder if i set it to CDMA only if this would still work.

I can confirm that this works too. its awesome to be able to use wifi tether and talk on the phone at the same time for work purposes
I was in a low service area and i noticed a difference between my reception and my friends. They all had one or two bars and I would have none. Then i placed my phone in the cupholder of my seat and in saw some bars of service popup. So I check it out and as soon as i did, no service. It became obvious that if i held my phone in my hand, my reception is affected.
Anyone confirm?

I don't use GPS religiously, but seems to lock on when I need it, regardless the ROM. I did try other ROMs out to see what might happen, but didn't help. I tried gummy, mahdi and slim. I'm sure its the fact the Antenna is built into the rear cover.
I've ordered my case from diztronic, so I will test with a case too.
Thanks for the replies.

People complaining about it from all over the world. Look for more on the official forum. Very poor signal reception on OPO. The signal strength is not quite as good as other phones in the same area. And signal strength goes up and down all the time and it does not matter hold you the phone in hands or it lies on the table. Data connection is inconsistent and often drops even though the phone shows that there is connection.

So I moved to a new house which has basically no LTE and lower cellular coverage. My old house was a highrise with a literal t-mobile tower on the top, so I never even considered using wifi calling as my LTE coverage was perfect.
So here I am, with my Note 5, thinking I can rely on wifi calling in my new house. The house has excellent wifi coverage that can still achieve decent speeds even on the exterior. I use an Asus AC router that I've completely opened up to the world while troubleshooting the problem. Sitting in my living room (where my most recent call was dropped), I'm pulling down 74mbps and uploading 13mbps according to the speedtest app on the note 5.
My phone shows that it's connected to wifi and that Wifi calling is enabled. I've also changed it to "Wifi calling preferred" so it doesn't even attempt to use the limited cellular network that I can get in some rooms occasionally (depending on air density).
However, I basically miss all inbound calls, outbound calls only occasionally connect, and when I do have a successful call, it drops in and out as though I'm on an actual spotty cellular network.
I've tried Arter, SkyHigh and stock rooted kernels, all with the same results. I'm basically at my wit's end and getting ready to abandoned t-mobile. I read that exynos does not handle these handoffs and transitions as well as qualcom SOCs, but I'm reluctant to give up my great note 5 for a ****ty LG just to test this theory.
Can anyone provide some guidance or advice on how I can deal with this? I'm on the original jump plan + unlimited data and I really don't want to abandon t-mobile, but working voice is essential.

Not sure of a solution but I can tell you that I use Wifi calling all the time on the Note 5 and do not experience any of these issues.
We would need to know more details to help further.
Are you stock? If not, which rom?
When was the last time you wiped your phone?
Anyone else have Tmob in the home?
I understand your frustration but I dont think its Tmobile. Chances are its something with your internet connection or a software issue of the phone.

Thanks for the reply! Not stock, using Darthstalker V11 rom. Only person living here, but I do have a verizon iphone for work. I just moved here, and prior to moving, I had an enterprise level firewall in place, which meant I had to open up the right ports to allow for wifi calling. Since I've moved, I haven't even put it in place, so I'm just using an Asus router as a router & AP with no firewall functionality.
Phone was last wiped a couple of months ago when installing the latest version of Darthstalker. With each kernel I've tried, I've wiped the cache multiple times post-install.

I never had to actually rely on it, so I'm not sure. I used it here and there when visiting low-coverage areas, but now it's basically my only option. For reference, I moved from the DC area to a smaller town in Central VA that only recently received t-mobile LTE. That being said... in certain areas of my house I get enough t-mobile LTE to pull down 30Mbps, but the upload portion is incredibly asymmetric and only pushes about .1 mbps up... Given that I get decent LTE in some places in the house, but it drops off as soon as I turn the corner, I've configured wifi calling to prefer wifi over cellular, which leads to another odd thing....the phone basically needs to be rebooted once leaving a wifi calling network, as it'll never switch the LTE radio back unless I reboot. It'll just stay on 3g/edge otherwise.
As for my wifi coverage, I get great speeds when testing basically anywhere in the house, both upload and download. However, when I'm on a call that is clearly being routed through wifi, it'll start pinging me and warning that the call may be dropped in place where I'm still getting excellent wifi coverage.
