Random reboots - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I've had a few random reboots in the 6 days I've owned the phone. Most of them were in the first few hours so I just checked it up to my new phone settling down.
So when I got one out of the blue this morning I started to wonder it any of you have been experiencing this.
So please if you did or do get random reboots. Leave a comment so we can keep an eye on it.
BTW it might not happen before your eyes but if you have to put in a pin to get it an you did not schedule a reboot, it was random.
Let us know.

After the latest update i have random reboot as well daily once... Mostly when it's goes to sleep..
I have Uninstalled all the bixby remap applications... Let's monitor for today and see how it's going...

I have had about 3 random reboots so far. still on stock firmware, no updates available for me yet (even though it's sim free). I just put it down to bugs that should get ironed out with updates.

Thanks guys. Good to know I'm not alone. Let's keep an eye on this.

None so far here before and after update.

Yes.. I am getting them every 4-5 hours. Reset to stock with no apps and it still happens

I'll put this on the list of haven't happened....yet

My phone rebooted again about an hour ago... Sigh.

Mine doesnt. Are you ising a package disabler?

I've had a few as well, latest this afternoon. Phone was sitting on my desk in my line of sight and I saw the AT&T logo show up

You never noticed having the volume notification out of the blue even though you did not power cycle your phone? The whole reboot can't take more than 20 seconds. It's mad fast. You won't notice it unless you're actually holding the phone when it happens.

This an issue on the F models?

Can you give us some info?
Which version is your s8? Is it from at&t?

Which variant?

None for me but my S6E had them so much I had to return it. I installed an app called reset or reboot counter. The worst day I had something like 130! It would kill the battery too

I had twice since I bought my s8+ exynos model.

AT&T

Had same issue
My phone would randomly freeze once a day then restart. The reason for the problem seems to be the update that patched bixby from being remapped.
I'm using the Sprint Variant of the Samsung Galaxy S8+.
I have seen two fixes for this issue. The first solution which worked for me was to clear the cache in recovery (boot holding power, volume down, and bixby), I did this three times as if it was a rom. The second solution is to back everything up and do a factory reset.

Random reboots....I had lots

Yes, I had a big problem with it rebooting the 2nd day after I installed all my apps. It would reboot 3-5 times in about 4 hours. I called Samsung support and they had me wipe the cache and told me if that didn't work, do a factory rest. After the cache wipe it rebooted on it own 1/2 hr. later.....not good. So then I went back and moved all the apps that allowed me to move them to the SD card, back to the internal storage. The problem went away, no reboots for 3 days...none! So then I started to move the apps back to the SD card, one at a time, one only per day. On the fourth day, fourth app, the phone rebooted by itself a few minutes after I moved the app to the SD card. I've seen several web sites that it may be a problem (software) with how it deals with the SD card, but other users have reported the same issue and don't use a SD card. Hopefully Samsung is looking into the matter.

Random reboots explained..... Maybe?

I spoke to teir 2 tech support at verizon and I spoke to a higher level tech support at samsung and both told me (without prompting) that samsung has programmed into their kernel to not allow Advance task killers and many other task managers as the samsung rom has its own task manager. Both said this was the reason for random reboots when I told them I was experiencing them... lol
False. There is no way they can program a ROM now to prevent any and all task killers from working. As soon as one is updated, they could bypass whatever method was put in place to prevent it. Also, creating the ROM to reboot if a task killer is installed would be the dumbest way to keep people from using them.
What they likely meant was that the ROM/kernel is setup to prevent the need for a task killer as the system will manage it automatically. This is the same as every other android device out there as they all have built in memory/task management and it isn't something Samsung created on their own.
the rep was trying to make you feel better. I bought my charge yesterday morning, it has random rebooted since i turned it on. i have never used a task manager of any sort
i work for verizon and i can tell you its false as well, but mine has been doing random reboots now since i got it and i have been tracking them and there seems to be no reason. i have so many log files and its never when i am doing the same actions on the phone eather.
Try formatting your sd card. Backup contents of course.
Only use conservative CPU scaling.
I just posted in another thread in the dev section, I will back up the statement of it being false with task killers, as I have never ran one.
I am just going on 24 hours with the phone, and it has rebooted at least a dozen times....sometimes twice in a row...as soon as it boots, then bam again..also in my pocket idle, and on the charger a few minutes ago...and i havent touched it since a few hours ago.
The SD card almost makes sense...I was having issues this mornign with copying files over...with the card mounted through windows...causing explorer to freeze up. Just a minute ago it froze up again copying files off...just so I can try the reformat.
I hope there is a resolution for this...as the way I ended up with this phone, I am stuck with it...unless I buy one full retail...
Interesting stuff guys. Exactly what i was hoping to hear from you guys. I thought this sounded like bs... lol
On a cooler note.. my phone hasn't rebooted since i flashed stock ed1 rooted, flashed jt's voodoo and cwm recovery, and imnuts' kernel. Did all those things and the phone has not rebooted once. My recent reboot success must me due to flashing some solid kernels. Thanks guys

Mine hasn't rebooted yet (I've only had mine for 3 days, tho). I had stock ED2 for about 24 hours, and I now have VooDoo installed.
I didn't bother installing CWM yet, since it doesn't work yet.
I've had the phone since May 16th and today was the first reboot I noticed. I don't think it was random though- It seems like a virus scanner I was updating froze- it was stuck on "installing" forever and finally it just rebooted.
Otherwise haven't noticed any random reboots.
yea i dont run task killers and my phone still reboots about once a day lol. im assuming its a software issue that will be fixed in a update sometime. its not a major annoyance as of now so i dont see it as a big deal
My wife and I both have a Charge. Hers is stock--mine's rooted. Neither one have ever had a random reboot. We've had them since the first week they were out.
Maybe it does, and I've just never noticed it before? Hmm... Now you've all got me paranoid
Pay attention to it and see if it reboots when it is trying to scan the SD card. On my OG Droid I kept getting reboots and I noticed it did it while it was scanning the SD at boot. Turns out it was a bad file on the SD card so I'd try wiping it if it continues.
I have also noticed that if the battery gets critically low (say less than 10%) mine while reboot and hang at the boot animation. Doesn't bother me but has anyone else had this happen?

I have never had a random reboot up until yesterday morning. I've had the phone since day 1 too.
Very strange. And on top of the random reboot, my 4G connection is very moody, worse than the Thunderbolt.
I can't seem to get a stable 4G signal, and I live in a 4G area.
RE: random reboots
Hi Folks, This is my first post in this forum as I am a newbie. Anyway I just wanted to confirm the techs B.S.. My wife and I both got the charge on day one, She had two task killers and I had none. Neither of us has had any random reboots yet. I had copied all our files from our old SD cards onto the new ones that came with the charges. The only thing that may be different is I formatted the cards before putting my files onto them. Hope this helps.

Reboots still after OTA Update

This is for stock unrooted peeps.
Anyone that has had reboot problems on their thunderbolts, still experiencing them after updating?
Wife's tbolt starting rebooting a couple times a day about a week ago. Did the update friday night and has rebooted twice since then. Thinking it might be hardware related if others have had their reboots fixed.
Probably going to call verizon next time it does this to try and get a replacement.
I've had only one that I've noticed so far, but that makes it less than the 3-4 daily I noticed with the most recent leak prior (mr2.5 thingee)
No reboots for me since the update. Of course Verzion only claimed this OTA would reduce the number of reboots not do away with them. I hope for you that they don't try to pull then when you ask for a new unit.

same story -- i'm still getting them occasionally but not as often. I was all excited about the update, but a few hours after it installed I was browsing the web and - bam - reboot. It's like a slap in the face. I've also been having a serious problem with my TB just discharging itself overnight... while plugged into the wall charger. I wake up and it has a completely dead battery which is a major PITA, doubly so because I use it as my alarm clock.
My TB has been up since the update on Friday. It used to reboot multiple times a day. Hope this lasts for me.
I'm stock and unrooted.

I have never had a reboot and I have been rooted since a week after owning the TBolt... I guess just lucky
Haven't had a reboot since memorial day weekend.
Never had a reboot before or after the update....I just bought my Tbolt two weeks ago, maybe they corrected the rebooting issues with the current hardware?? I mean if users are still rebooting after the update maybe its not software...
I've been really really lucky here I guess. I bought my Thunderbolt about a week after it came out and have had maybe 3-4 reboots since then. I have gone through a few roms/kernals/radios but never any issues. It must just be a hit/miss thing with hardware to be honest. Either that or the network, I'm in West Lafayette maybe our network is just far superior
The only gripe I have had is shutdowns, which IMO are more annoying because I can't just turn it back on, I have to pull the battery and wait a couple minutes before putting it back in and then waiting another minute before it responds to the power button to turn it back on again.
All in all I am happy with it compared to all others complaints on reboots. I would rather have a small number of reboots/shutdowns than a refurbished phone with possibly more issues.
I've been rebooting still like CRAZY. Before and after the update. I got on Verizon and received my phone on Thursday. It was rebooting over and over and over... I noticed it happened if I left wifi coverage at work or home. Even after the update, same thing! Rebooting over and over like no tomorrow.
I noticed that with LTE on it would loose connectivity all together until I manually rebooted. If I was on Edge or 3G it would stay up longer. I have since then turned off LTE and it has been fine, but still reboots every few hours.

I have had 1 reboot after having mine for over a month or so now. Been rooted since day 1 and have changed radios multiple times along with ROMs/Kernels. I guess we are both lucky?
Never once had a reboot. Custom rom since day one though. Stock sucks.
On a helpful side though. Always best to do a hard reset after a update. I know its a pain but it is the best solution normally.

Nexus 5 keeps crashing!

Managed to get myself one from the CPW yesterday afternoon, and since then I think my new phone has crashed about 150 times. Every time I open any browser app, it crashes. If I use the loud speaker then which back to earpiece while on a call, it crashes. The list goes on.
Anyone else experiencing anything like this?
I got mine from CPW and now had a single thing crash! A few apps have lagged for a second or two but that's becuase they haven't been updated I'm assuming.
But as far as the OS is concerned I have not had these problems. Maybe something went wrong during your update? I'd try a reset.

Any other ideas?

The camera app crashed multiple times even after a reboot.
Also, when I was trying to search contacts the google search crashed.
I'm also having seemingly random crashes. At least a few times a day. No pattern. Could be from pressing the power button. Watching a video on YouTube. Just typing into this box. Anything. I already tried doing a factory reset. No luck.
Maybe a bad flash? Reflash factory image if it still crashes, return it. I've been using mine since Monday, the only thing that crashed was Firefox Beta but that's fixed now with the new update.
Had my nexus 5 for about 3 days now.
It randomly restarts through out the day,
I'll be watching youtube videos with the youtube app I'll just watch the volume bar just go to 0 when I'm not even touching the volume buttons, I'll turn it back up only for it to auto turn back down.
Today I'm having issues with the camera, very time load the camera and try to take a picture, it will just freeze and the phone will reboot.
I've also had issues with the WiFi connecting to my network, like I have to trick it into connecting.
I want to love this phone but all of this random crap is pissing me off.

How to understand crashed? Rebooted or just your apps crashed on it?
If only apps, it might be 'cause they are not compatible with Android KitKat yet.

For me it freezes up for around 5-10 seconds then restarts. There is no usage Or app associated.
Tried reloading the stock image. No difference. RMA it is!

Oops...my earlier reported problems with crashing were resolved after simply restarting phone...
Wow...I haven't had a single crash on Android from 1.6 all the way to 4.4.2 now. Guess I'm just lucky. I did have a Moto X that kept rebooting though, but it turned out to be a bad RAM chip. Maybe thats the problem here?

Random reboots

Hi guys, I got my G920i from an ebay seller that everyone here has been talking about. The phone was in great condition and everything was fine with the phone for the first 24 hours. Ever since then , my phone has been constantly rebooting after a few hours on it's own. I have not installed any apps that I normally don't have on my other android device , the oneplus one. The G920I is not rooted or anything. The only app I can think of , that is different this time from the OPO , is the samsung push service update. I checked around and could not see anyone else who had recvd the Push service update and was facing the same issue.
Please help!
same
I have the same issue. I also bought the international version off of eBay. I didn't notice anything for about two days, but have now had the phone restart on me three times. All three times I was not actively using the phone and the screen was off.
One thing that I tried was to reinstall the Samsung push service update. That worked for 3 days as I didn't see any more reboots. And just 15 mins ago it happened again while the phone was in my pocket. Hope this gets fixed soon.
It has happened to me twice. I just disabled the auto update feature for my apps to see if that actually works. Will let you know if it worked after a couple of days.
I've had the phone since last tuesday and didnt notice any random reboots until this app updated and now i have 3-5 a day

Im only around open networks at work and it does the soft reboots around my house which is secured
My random reboots started shortly after the Samsung Push Services app was updated. I force stopped it, disabled it and uninstalled the update and I haven't had a reboot in a while.
My phone was rebooting several times every day before that.
Edit: The random reboots are back. This is very frustrating.
reflash the firmware fix the problem for me. No reboot since 24 hours. 5 to 6 reboots per day before. Hope it will continue.
I also have the same issue. It has happened 2 times for me, today and yesterday. I had the phone in my hand and suddenly I see the Samsung logo. Within 5 minutes it reboots 2-3 times. This sucks =(
I have the same problem, it only happens to me when I open Play Store or when I update something.
Edit: I have the F model.
I have had my 920i for almost a week, and I haven't had any random reboot at all. Everything works as supposed to.

I bought my 920i from Breed on Ebay. Everything has been great for the most part, but I do experience a random reboot at least once every few days. It just happened to me while sitting on my desk.
I am rooted, but I don't have any crazy customizations and I applied stock recovery after root. Only one app is frozen and it's that Samsung Security Agent process that was draining my battery. I also have it connected to a Gear S, but I'm pretty sure that's not the issue.
I wiped it twice yesterday and then set it up. It's definitely not a ROM/cache issue. I'll be interested to see if anyone figures out what this is. It could just be a bug that we'll have to deal with until the next update. Fortunately, the phone restarts super fast.
I also believe this is a software issue. I am not rooted and don't see myself doing that any time soon.
Which network are you using on your 920i? I am on AT&T network

AT&T here, also.
I'm using the G920F with an european carrier, so I think that is a global problem.
It happened to me twice today. That's a first. The only thing that's different is that I have a Gear S connected full time.
Didn't Android 5.01 cause the phone to reboot after some time due to running out of available memory?

Random reboots

My pixel had decided it's going to randomly freeze and reboot itself
It does it a few times a day and doesn't seem to matter what apps are running
Is there anyway of logging the reboots without root to find the cause?

Same thing happening to me here too.
What I would do is start from scratch, install factory image, don't install any apps, use for a day to test, then install your apps one by one to find the culprit.
If still rebooting without any apps installed, it might be time for a rma

Has there been any resolution to this? My Pixel has been randomly rebooting, too. Already tried troubleshooting with Google tech support, tried Safe Mode (did it there, too), and factory reset and cache wipe.
It still happens. And when I say random, I mean random. Sometimes it reboots overnight, sometimes in my pocket, sometimes as I'm using the phone (it'll freeze in some cases too before it reboots). There's no obvious indication of what's causing it.
Has there been any light shed on this problem? Any clue as to whether it's software or hardware related?
Some days it doesn't, others it'll do it 5times. I've not had any luck fixing it which is annoying because it awesome except for that

Yeah, there really is no rhyme or reason to the way it reboots, making it even harder to diagnose.
Rebooted again while it was just sitting on my table. No rhyme or reason to this bug.
I've had my 5" Pixel since launch. Google Store device, 32GB, never unlocked the boot loader.
I had a few random reboots, but never actually saw it happen. I'd go to use my phone and see the pattern unlock screen you get on first use after restart.
I have not had it occur since the January OTA.

Same here. Sometimes I'll go to my phone wanting to use it, try my finger to unlock, and it'll prompt me to input my pattern because it's required after a reboot. Clearly, rebooting by itself.
It's frustrating because there's no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes it'll happen multiple times a day, sometimes it won't happen for a couple of days.
At first, I thought the Jan update fixed it too because it didn't occur for a while after the update, but then it reared its ugly head again. I've already tested it in Safe Mode, did a factory reset, and the rebooting still persisted.
If you simply research this on the web, many others are having this issue. And it's even been reported a few times by Android sites/blogs. Google needs to get on top of this. At the very least, they should confirm it's a software issue and not a hardware issue.

Mine hasn't really been "rebooting"... It's actually just been suddenly shutting completely off for no reason. It will be fine for a few days, then the next fee days it will simply abruptly shut off for no reason... Battery levels don't seem to make a difference.. Weird.

For me it seems that the reason lies in Bluetooth or just in the BT stack. If I deactivate bluetooth it works fine through the day. But I need bluetooth so I started BT again and the Pixel XL 128GB crashes sometimes 10 Times a day, but as I checked BT was automaticly deactivated after these first reboots. I seemed. The Pixel stopped rebooting as I activated BT and deactivated it myself.
And now? How long do we have to wait. I don´t think it´s a hardware issue.
So, I have this issue but it became (very) apparent only after the OTA Oreo. First two weeks were fine (and subsequently first two weeks after a factory reset I've done), but then it slowly starts doing this after those 2 weeks. Freezes then reboots. At first it's 1-2 a day, now it's like 12-20. Ridiculous. There's a buganiser thread for this issue and Google is aware of it. Most of the bug reports have this in them:
Code:
Sense Key : Hardware Error [current]
which Google rep says is a hardware issue. I also have an access to a Google's internal buganiser thread on this issue (i'm a vendor) and they refer to this being a Toshiba's memory issue. Not sure though why this started happening only after the Oreo update. Also people who flash Nougat report no issues as well. Another funny thing is that there's at least two users with Pixel (XL) 2 who suffer from it. Anyway, I'll be giving it back to my carrier over the weekend (glad we have 2 year warrant here in UK) even though I'm pretty sure I'll get a refurb with a similar problem after two wasted weeks of wait.
Flash nougat rom and see does this problem occur or not? If not then us nougat for a while then again update to oreo
