Anyone noticing that the Bixby button works intermittently? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hi,
Prior to updating to the newer firmware, my Bixby button would work all the time (I remapped it using BxActions). After the update, I've found that it works only intermittently. I've removed BxActions and have done a factory reset, but the Bixby button does not function all the time.
Wondering if this is due to the update or a hardware issue that I have?

I press it and nothing happens at all. Does this app need to be setup first?

I also have this problem with the new update, but if you push quickly 2 times on the bixby button it will pop up.

Same on my S8+. I need to press the button twice in quick succession for it to work.

It appears in their rush to disable the ability to re-map the Bixby button they somehow created an issue where Bixby does not always respond. I was beginning to think my button was malfunctioning, so I'm glad to see that it's just a software issue. However, this is not a great start for Bixby.

Same issue here on my S8+. You are not alone.

Good to see it's not a hardware issue. Yes, this looks worse for Bixby as they've gone from having Bixby as a choice (allowing remap) to it being not usable at all.

I too have this problem. In my case, even two quick presses in succession fails more often than it succeeds.

I have the problem too, combined with Bixby popping out of nowhere when unlocking my screen at times. Not a good start

They are saying it was done because a hand full or people fusses about hitting the button when they didnt want to.
The remapping was disable because samsung feels its there baby and they didnt want anyone change it lol.

If Samsung is pushing Bixby as one of the key features of the S8, I would understand why they would disable the remapping. But I'm not sure why they would make it more difficult to access by making the button press more finicky!

So thats the reason, same here on my S8

I picked up my Verizon variant of the S8+ on launch day. I immediately noticed that the Bixby button was quirky. I thought at first it was a hardware issue and I would have to exchange my phone. After 2 days of playing with it I realized it was more of a software issue and then I came across this thread which confirmed my suspicion. I have also noticed that 2 quick button presses launches it no problem, but what makes think there is an actual software issue is because it ALSO sometimes randomly launches with a single press like it was supposed to. I have noticed that the single press (when it works) is significantly more laggy to launch then the double press which seems instantaneous. I have contacted Samsung support VIA Twitter to see if they have an explanation. I will post any updates. Please do the same if you find any more info.

home button not working??

hey guys, i noticed today that sometimes when i press the home button to wake the phone it doesnt react...when i press it again it works normally....this happened to me two times....did anyone see this?
That sounds like a hardware issue. The home button synthesize sensor must not be recognizing the pressure you are applying to the button. Did this happen after a software update?
I'm having the same issue with the home button being super spotty and straight not registering when I push the home button. This is super irritating. I constantly have to press the button and sit like an idiot while it does nothing, then press again.

i only noticed this today...and yes 2 days ago i have done an OTA update....
I have a Verizon version running 5.0.2
i tried now to see if this is happening when i am pressing the sides of the home button...and yes...it looks like sometimes i press the sides thats why it doesnt work....but the thing is my home button is a bit loose...so its easy to hit the sides...
I had the S4 and the Note 3. Never had a problem. If I press the button and it clicks it should work.

Hmm that could be a number of things. It could be the hardware. It could be the update that you've installed that is causing wake lock on the device. Since your phone is covered by the one year limited warranty, I think you should contact Samsung and request an exchange/replacement. You can, however, try a factory reset to see if the wake lock problem goes away.
Ok I've been able to replicate the problem 100% if I choose. It is most definitely a hardware problem. If the home button is pressed on the left corner of the button it fully depresses and even clicks. But it doesn't register as so.
Definitely a hardware issue.
My phone had this issue as well where it wouldnt register soft clicks or off center taps and I would regularly get missed presses when using the phone (unless I pressed the button hard). I had verizon send me a replacement. The new phone just showed up, and the home button works almost perfectly. I can still get it to not register if I try really hard to push extremely lightly, on the very edge of the button with my finger nail, but its easily 100x better than the previous one.
The new button is also almost silent while the old one made kind of a cheap plastic click sound like it rattled slightly. It also feels like it requires a tad less force to press than the old button. The old button I could easily recreate the issue 100% of the time by just pressing lightly or pressing off center and it would regularly bother me while using the phone.
Buttons don't work

Here is a "solution" that has worked for me. My S6 is the Verizon variant, but I think these steps will work on any Service Provider.
Settings > Accessibility > Dexterity and interaction > Assistant menu
From here, toggle the switch to "ON". This will create a hovering circle with a window with four panes inside it. If you interactive with the hovering circle it will open a new window in which you have access to the back and recent apps buttons via an onscreen button.
Not sure what has disabled the hardware buttons, but this should give you access via onscreen software.
I know it's not a true fix, but a work around.
If someone finds a true fix, please post it! But in the meantime ...
I hope this helps!
Hello,
I had a S6 and after 4 days I noticed loose home button: it made noise the tap on it (not press). And also didn't registered clicks on the left side.
I exchange it for another and this one is almost perfect. I notice the left side of the butto to be a bit pressed. Anyway, I suspect a harware issue.
Lollipop 5.1.1

My home button stopped working all together right after an update. How can I remove this issue? Every thing else works perfectly. Please help!
I have issues with my home button as well, it's "loose" and rattling. It has always been a bit loose but the last few months it has gotten worse and worse, it started to require more and more pressure to register the press (way beyond the pressure needed for it to *click*). As of now it does not even work at all, no matter how hard I try pressing it.
I've tried the assistant menu that's mentioned here in the thread but I just find the menu annoying. Instead I have learned to live with it for the time being, I just multitask to instagram or facebook and then spam the back button until I'm back at home.
100% hardware issue.
Apparently it's possible to replace the home button, and there are replacement home button to buy from ebay, but the replacement procedure is ridiculuos. The home button is basically the last thing you will demount from the phone when disassembling it.
I found a temporary fix by dabbing the home button with Isopropyl, this made it like new again. But two days later it's back to as it was before, or maybe even worse.
Annoying as hell, especially since this is a result of poor quality control from Samsung.
Update: Found a nice little app on play store called "button remapper" which lets me rebind the default system buttons without requiring root, i have rebinded the "recent apps" button to act as a home button instead, and a long press opens the regular "recent apps". Seems to be an alright workaround.
Just go to samsung shop, let them see,if no exchange or replace or fix, take their demo phones like s8 (2017) throw on to the floor and then take any phone u want, leave the s6 phone alone (make sure it is factory reseted).Ran away and shout #ALLAHUAKBAR!

Screen Pinning

On my previous phones and through reading around unpinning a screen required the user to hold both the recents button AND the back button. Does anyone know why the S6 and touchwiz only require you to hold to recents button? My toddlers use my phone for apps and kids youtube but they are constantly unpinning the screen cause of their little hands and they way they hold the phone with their thumb right on the recents button.
With the old M8 ir required both buttons to be held and they never unlocked it on their own by accident.
Anyone know why touchwiz has to be different and if there is a way to enable BOTH buttons to be used to unlock?
Not rooted and fully stock but use tasker. Perhaps there is something I could use with that if anyone has an idea.
Thanks.

i have to push recents and back buttons to un pin an app with my galaxy s6, idk maybe you have a fake galaxy s6.
maybe you are doing that in the wrong way.
Nope it's a phone direct from my carriers store so it's not a fake.
Also as you can see in the screen shot the instructions say you just need to hold the recent button.
Did you actually check yours? Maybe you are mistaken that you have to use two buttons on your S6.
Can anyone confirm for me what the instructions are exactly on their phone why trying to pin? Lots of views on this thread but no one is chiming in on how their phone works.
Mine says to hold recent button only too. I'm on 5.1.1 and never checked on 5.0.2 so I don't know if Samsung changed it.
What I've done is turn on the 'Use screen lock type to unpin' option so it requires my fingerprint after holding recents.

Hi thanks for helping out. I'm on 5.0.2.
I like your suggestion but I only use swipe lock so unfortunately I can't do that.
Maybe I'll see if I can get tasker to do something for me.
Cheers.

Mine says recent and back together. I tested it myself and recent alone does nothing but recent and back puts the phone back to normal. I'm on T-Mobile running the latest update 5/1.1

Softbuttons? Nougat? Huawei? Facebook?

I'm not really sure what my question is related to, but I'm sure it's a stupid one. This is my first phone with softbuttons. My previous phones were Samsungs, which had capacitive buttons. My last phone was a Note 3, which was still on Lollipop. I had always assumed that softbuttons were simply an on-screen version of what I was used to, but the behavior is different. Not sure if that's related to the newer OS, or what. The left capacitive button brought up the menu in the app, which was often redundant to an on-screen menu option within the app, but not always. For example, in Facebook, clicking the left button would bring up several options, logging out being one of them. On the Mate 9, there's a back button, which does the same thing as the back capacitive did, there's a home button, which does the same thing the main home button did, but the square button brings up the recent app list. On my Samsung, that was done by holding the home button. So there doesn't seem to be an equivalent to the menu button I had on the Samsung.
So the short question is: how do I bring up that short blue menu in Facebook with the option to log out?
There is no button menu, you have to logout from fb menu.
So, the little quick menu in Facebook that has Logout, Settings, About, and Report a Problem is only available on phones that have capacitive buttons? You have to wade through the much longer list of options within the Facebook app to find those things? It seems odd there isn't a softbutton equivalent. Or at least an option to add one.
For some reason Google thinks the menu buttom was useless and they got removed. Even Samsung phones now doesn't have it.
On the Mate 9 you have option for Back, Home, Recents, Notifications (optional).
Swiping left/right will turn on 'reachability' mode. Holding Home brings up Google Now/screen search. Holding Recents will activate split screen mode.

Ah, ok, so this is really an issue of me being used to Lollipop, and moving to Nougat. I wasn't sure what the cause was. Thanks!

Well Google never implemented the menu buttom in the software-ones, just home/back/multitasking.

Remapping the Bixby Button to Launch Google Assistant

EDIT: it's possible, here's my tutorial on remapping the Bixby button! https://www.xda-developers.com/how-...-the-galaxy-s8-s8-to-launch-google-assistant/
Earlier today, Marques Brownlee (MKBHD), posted the following tweet:
First one that makes an app to remap the Bixby button on the Galaxy S8 to Google Assistsnt wins my $$$
Challenge accepted. I bet that it's not only possible, but pretty easy to do.
...the only problem is, I don't have a Galaxy S8. If any one of you (somehow) have a Galaxy S8 already, or if you get one early and want to figure this out, message me at [email protected] and we'll hash this out.

We won't see anything until someone with an actual S8 is willing to test. I won't be able to get my hands on one for weeks until it officially launches, and even then, I'm not sure if I will pick one up immediately.
I'll test stuff. Just gotta get my hands on one first. Still wanted a post in the thread so I won't lose it ?

I'd love to see this happen as well as being able to remap it to quick launch the Camera. Wearing out the Power Button isn't my cup of tea as to how I remember my Power Button failed on me when I had the S3.
Plus, I tried the demo models at Best Buy and it couldn't seem to work in launching the Camera when I double pressed the power button to launch. So...idk.

Even when your phone's screen is off? I don't think that's the case because the options within the Camera settings is to Quick Launch via Power Button as it's stated.

My s7 does it with the screen off. I don't see why the 8 wouldn't. I tested the double push with the screen on at best buy and it worked.

We're still talking about the S8 and S8+, right? I have the S7 Edge and the whole greatness is being able to quickly launch the camera with the Home button it has.
The S8 is something I'm uncertain about. Can't turn the screen off because it goes right into screensaver mode due to being in Retail Store mode. When the screen is on though, I double pressed the Power Button to try and access Camera right away and it doesn't do a thing. It may work with the Home key on the navigation bar when the screen is on (which I haven't tried yet anyhow), but I want to see how you say it would work if the screen is off. Or better yet like I posted originally, remap the Bixby button on the side to Quick Launch the Camera just like the dedicated Shutter Buttons on the Xperias.

We are talking about the 8. I'm sure it'll do it with the screen off. The screen button on the 8 is like the iPhone 7 button.
As far as I know you double push the power button now not the home button to quick access the camera, like on the Pixel.

Correct. I saw this demonstrated in a hands-on YouTube video on March 29th. Which video, I don't recall. I watched like 20 of them that day.
I just tried out the S8+ in a Verizon store that had a working model. The double push of the power button to launch the camera worked fine. It is a setting that can be turned off (like the home double push on the s7 edge). Personally, I'd rather have the Bixby button remapped to be a physical home button. If so, then a long press can launch the Google Assistant. I don't need Bixby and really liked having the physical home button. I hated the virtual button ever since the Galaxy Nexus.
Since the home button area is pressure sensitive, you can also double press that area while the screen is off so it's pretty much the same as previous galaxy phones. I tried it today at the T-Mobile store and it basically worked just like my S7 edge.
This will be a thing for sure. My only doubt is if it will work also for non-root users.
Hmm, just wondering if the Bixby Voice input works with nonrooted S7 edge. I installed it and it crashes... Is it disabled by Samsung?
Really hoping that somebody can make this happen for non-rooted users. Might be possible via a Tasker plugin too? But that wouldn't be as native or fluent IMO. I pre-ordered the S8 on T-Mo and am willing to test out attempts

Tagging for updates. This will be so useful without root, as this always ruins an access to bank apps.
Someone posted this on Reddit.
Just installed it on my S6 to check.
UPDATE:
I managed to map volume key button on Galaxy S6 Edge to do Home action. This app may be very helpful when I put my hands on S8 as far as Samsung will not turn this option off, to try to force people to use Bixby at any cost

Bixby hardware button not working

So far we have established one thing.. Bixby is not ready for the prime time.
However, I have completely different but relevant issue with it.
Trying to launch Bixby with the dedicated hardware button doesn't work at times. It's hit or miss.. Sometimes it works.. Sometimes it doesn't!
Anyone has this problem??
PS: I tried the earlier remap workaround and facing this ever since.
Same here. Did you do the update. After I did the update for verizon it seemed to start doing it.
I think it was after the update.. Not sure what causes this but it is annoying for sure..
Take it as a gods sign.. Bixby not working even if you want it to. Lol
Mine was not working at all, then it worked occasionally and now it's working 100%. It seems you just have to warm it up a little
UK version here and I hate the flippin Bixby but the button works every time i accidentally press it lol

I have another thread going on this, but a lot of us are facing the same issue after the update. I've reset my phone entirely and set it up with a clean install, but it still happens. Samsungs fix for stopping the remap is probably the cause of this issue.
just updated mine on sprint and now I have to double press the button for it to work.. single press or long press doesn't work but everytime a quick double press works.

I'm wondering if the update did this on purpose to keep people from accidently hitting the Bixby buttin in stead of volume button and then would pull up Bixby when all you wanted to do was mess with the volume. I know I've done that a few times.
Try too double press the button...
Same here, what a joke.
I had to double tap all the time to get it out. I like it that way as it stops accidental presses for me lol

It's just that the button time is like 0.00005 of a sec before it thinks it's a long press and does nothing.
Fix is just a very quick tap of the button makes it function every time ... All the time ?
The new T-Mobile fixed the tapping for me.
