Nougat Notifications won't appear expanded by default? - General Questions and Answers

My Verizon Note 5 just updated to Nougat and I'm finding an annoyance with the new Notifications functionality. Is there a way to have the top notification expanded by default and not have to manually expand every notification? Seems like Marshmallow used to do that but now Nougat always displays every notification in collapsed view and the user has to manually expand them every time. What a pain the rear. Any ideas on how to fix or work around this?

[Q] Disable heads-up notifications on L?

I have a rooted Nexus 5 and I flashed the factory image for Android Lollipop. I like the clean design but I don't really like the heads-up notifications. You know, the white pop up at the top that covers 25% of your screen. I'm trying out QKSMS and I see a little icon when I get a message, that's enough for me so I don't need an extra notification. It also sometimes pops up when I receive something from Facebook Messenger, but not always for some reason, which is also quite annoying. So is there any way to disable the heads-up notifications? Thanks in advance!
Agreed. I prefer notifications to be discreet. I don't want the contents of private texts to pop-up onscreen if I'm showing something to a friend/co-worker. It would be nice to be able to choose between the Kitkat style of scrolling ticker text in the status bar and L's heads-up notifications. Or to turn them both off and simply have the app icon appear in the status bar, requiring a notification shade pull-down to view the contents.
Choice is good.
I dislike it because often I can't deal with the notification straight away, but still want it in the notification draw for later. With these heads up notifications (which I get for EvolveSMS) I can't get it out the way without it being completely dismissed, it's annoying.
This could be solved with simply adding the function that swiping up will send it to the notification draw
Yeah I'm currently inclined to stick with KK until I know that the worst aspects of Lollipop can be controlled. Obviously in the absence of Xposed on ART it's difficult to make little tweaks here and there.
Heads-up is right at the top of my list. I have always liked how notifications NEVER attack my screen space in Android 2.0-4.4 and I'm not about to go along with a regression to iPhone-like behaviour. When I can disable it globally or on a per-app basis I'll be much more comfortable with the idea of upgrading.
My other biggest concern: The old Silent mode functionality was to allow user-configured audible alarms, while shutting off all other audible notifications and silencing all vibrations. The new modes, you have to choose between a None that also silences alarms, or a Priority mode that lets vibrations leak through.
It's kind of hilarious actually, this is the first time in history that I've been dragging my feet on an Android upgrade when all my less techie friends are upgrading. In the past I'd be proud to be the first one to upgrade and show it off to everyone stuck on the old version.
So, a few weeks later... Are there any ROMs or mods that allow users to disable the heads up feature entirely across the board?

I hate heads up, they are very intrusive, i prefer something more discreet...
I apololgize for bumping this old thread, but has there been any update with this? I'm looking for an SMS app that allows you to disable the heads up style pop-up notifications, but also allows you to reply from notifications. Textra and ChompSMS allow you to disable heads up notifications on Lollipop, but they dont allow you to reply from notification (like EvolveSMS, QKSMS). I'm looking for an app that incorporates both features. Any luck?
With HeadsOff lollipop heads-up notifications can now be disabled!
No root needed.
You can also restore the ticker text in the statusbar!
Give it a try:

[Q] Notification bar pop-up settings

On the S6 when you get a notification on WhatsApp for example, the notification blocks the whole notification bar and stays there for an annoyingly long time
So until the bar goes away you can't swipe down the notification bar.
What settings would I need to change in order to fix this? Maybe stop it blocking the whole notification bar every time I get a message.
Sometimes I get more than one message in a row so it will be there for a long time.
There is probably a really obvious answer for this but I have yet to find it
Any ideas?

Its a feature that sadly comes by default in Lollipop and there is no option to disable it. Unless the app specifically allows you to disable Headsup notifications theres nothing to be done. We are sadly stuck until Google or Samsung realize this is a ****ty way to receive notifications and gives us the damn notification ticker from kitkat back..
I just rooted my S6 just to get rid of this stupid heads up.
I found a guide using SQLite editor.
Open folder File then: /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
Choose Global and find heads_up_notifications_enable and set to 0 instead of 1. Save and reboot.
Worked for me

Not sure if you are aware of this but you can dismiss the message by swiping to the side. Similar to how you would if you were in the actual notification shade.
Took me awhile before I figured this out. I'm much less annoyed by it now.
So theres no way to get the kit kat notifications without root?

EMUI notification style

Whenever a new message or other notification comes in, the message briefly appears at the top of the screen. To make it go away, you have to touch the bottom of the notification and slide it upwards. To me, this is really awkward and annoying - the new notification blocks the top of the screen which is where the Chrome address bar is, and also sliding it upwards to dismiss it does not feel very natural or easy to do. I usually end up waiting a few seconds for it to go away on its own, because I would have to use my other hand to accurately grab it and drag it upwards. This is probably my single biggest issue with EMUI 4.1.
I think it would be much better if you could just swipe left or right to dismiss a notification. And be able to swipe it away from any position, not a specific "grab point". Is there a way to change this behavior with a theme or something? Also, how do the notifications behave in EMUI 5?
its EMUI Nothing Can be Changed My Friend ! .
That setting is per App as far as i can tell. go to the app info and click notifications, then it's under 'banners'. turn it off. I dont think there is a master setting so have to go one by one.
That's not an EMUI style; that's the Android standard. All of the "banner" notifications have the temporary dismiss by swiping upwards on it. The difference between that and swiping it to the side is the notification will still remain in the notification tray versus dismissing the notification completely. If you go to Settings > Notification panel & status bar > Notification center, it tells you every app that has notifications permissions and which ones they are. Just turn off banner and you'll be fine.
though its a feature, it deffinitely is a pain..think now it is removed in emui5??
Banner Notifications are still a thing in Nougat. Maybe it's because my old phone was running Kit Kat, where I don't think they existed, but I had to manually enable them in each app I wanted to see them in EMUI 4.1. It's still the same in EMUI 5.0.

how do you disable peek heads up notifications in 8.0?

in nougat, you could set app priority for notifications, but of course Google in all its wisdom completely removed a feature to turn off a "feature" that so many of us can't stand. if you disable heads up via adb, it ruins the ambient display in that it won't light up when a message comes through anymore... don't ask me why, but Google is full of morons coding nowadays. anyone have any idea?

First time in android lollipop devices introduces heads up (Peeking) notification feature. When enable this feature, you can see notification on home screen. In android Oreo, you can also reply from home screen without open app. In android 8.1 Oreo devices, you can disable interruptions of app if you don’t want to show pop up notifications on screen, sound and vibrate when receive any app notification. Different android device has slightly different settings to turn off peeking notification in android 8.0 and 8.1 Oreo. Also disable heads up notifications on android Oreo 8.1

How to expand A13 notifications

I hate the new notifications on A12 and A13. Anyway to make them totally expanded like on A11?
I don't remember how A11 notifications looked like, but if all notifications were expanded automatically, my following suggestion wouldn't really come to that...
But if you're rooted and can implement the AOSP mod, there's an option there where there's a button (in the middle of the notification bar when pulled down) that will expand and compress all notifications; it might not be perfect for you as you will only find the button below all notifications (so it might make it meaningless), but I suppose one could get used to automatically scrolling all the way down and then pressing the button -- it's something
Yes, I am rooted, but I use Nova Launcher. I actually downgraded to A11. So I will have to try expand on someone elses phone, and see if it works for me? LOL
I posted here as well, the notifications look like:
