[ROOT] [GUIDE] Root Moto G4 (Plus) with SuperSU on Android 7.0 (NPJ25.93-14) - Moto G4 Plus Guides, News, & Discussion

Here are the steps to root the Moto G4 (Plus) on Android 7.0 with SuperSU.
1. Unlock your bootloader with the Code you can receive from Motorola. Further instructions: unlocking bootloader. You have to create a Motorola account first.
2. Flash TWRP 3.0.2.0 through bootloader. Download and how-to-flash: twrp athene
3. Backup partitons in TWRP (especially the boot-partition)
4. Flash Kernel ElementalX through TWRP. Download and further information: ElementalX
5. Wipe Cache and ART-Cache through TWRP (don't know if necessary but doesn't harm)
6. Flash SuperSU v2.79 SR3 through TWRP. Download SR3-SuperSU-v2.79-SR3-20170114223742.zip: SuperSUv2.79SR3.
SuperSU v2.79 SR3 (or newer) will flash as systemless by default on Motorola devices running Android 6+. Older versions of SuperSU won't do that without creating a config file .supersu in /data containing the line
Code:
SYSTEMLESS=true
So the best is to make sure you don't use an older version of SuperSU than 2.79 SR3!
That's it and it works. SuperSU.apk is going to be installed in step 6.
Successfully tested with XT1642, XT1622 (eta82), XT1643 (Adarsh balu), XT1644 (WTF?), XT1641 (EkisDeMX).

It's the same old guide man. Please see before posting if similar threads exist. XDA is getting confusing for the common non-techie person anyways.

Works perfect on Moto g4 (XT1622) :good:

I've tried to install SuperSU before and it didn't work on my device XT1640. I've got a bootloop and had to flash stock ROM (now I'm using another supersu). Does it really work now? Cuz I don't want to get a bootloop again and lose all my data.

You have to use SuperSU v2.79 SR3. If you use any older version, it won't install systemless and causes bootloops.
Which version of SuperSU did you flash?
And you have to flash ElementalX kernel before installing SuperSU. Otherwise you will get bootloop too.

Didn't find any thread which describes the method rooting with SuperSU in the first post and as its topic.
In some threads (with other topics like how to root with phh's SuperUser) there is in the discussion mentioned this method with SuperSU but nobody will ever find these posts...

I've installed ElementalX Kernel first then I installed SuperSU and I've got a bootloop. I used SuperSU v2.62 and got a bootloop, then I tried with SuperSU v2.74 and also got a bootloop.

Ok, seems to be the reason. You have to use version 2.79 SR3 or newer if available.
Otherwise it won't work without further modification...

Alright, is there any problem if I unroot my device with this supersu and root again with the SuperSU that you said, will I get any problem? Do I have to reinstall ElementalX Kernel and twrp again?

I don't know. If you have backup of your partitions then flash your original system and boot partition and start from beginning (ElementalX and then SuperSU 2.79 SR3).
If you don't have backups then download (here on xda or somewhere else) stock firmware and flash system und boot partition.

Nobody confirmed it yet in this thread.
I could it only test with 1642.
But normally i would say it should also work on 1643 variant.

SystemLess Root for Marshmallow Android 6.0 Stock Rom(unrooted and locked bootloader)

The official update of the MOTO G3 2015 is available over the OTA.
So , the next question is that the unlocking bootloader and rooting process still the same or if anyone else has any problem with the process.
Also , there has been a lot of buzz about the SystemLess Root but no proper thread for MOTO g3 is available.
So , if someone can guide me through the entire process of SystemLess Root
And if the SystemLess Root works properly with marshmallow update.
I am on MOTO G3 2015 Marshmallow Android 6.0 (Indian OTA update)
System Version : 24.11.25.osprey_retasia_ds_2gb.retasia.en.o3.retin
The very first thing you have to do is to unlock your bootloader if you want root.
It's not possible for Moto G3 I think..

Agree. And the procedures need to fill all the gaps of info that currently exist. For example, after unlocking bootloader, it would have been helpful to know that you need to reboot and let the system rebuild itself (which takes several minutes) before moving on to anything else such booting/flashing TWRP & rooting.

Can Anyone Provide me twrp recovery and systemless supersu for moto g3 marshmallow?
Has anyone had success installing superSu 2.76 systemless? I ask for this because I'm trying to install unoficial systemless xposed and it will only install systemless if supersu 2.76 is also flashed systemless (not updated via supersu app)
I managed, besides 2.62 beta, to get systemless root with CF-autoroot (2.74)

never, Never, NEVER EVER use a one-click root on the Moto G 3rd gen, it can and will brick it... we have seen tons of examples of it happening on Marshmallow. The rooting process has been refined and simplified and works on all stock Marshmallow ROMs...
1) Unlock bootloader
2) Boot TWRP and do a full backup and store it in a safe place (Seriously, do this... When you need it you will thank me)
2a) Flash TWRP (optional, but recommended)
3) Start TWRP by either fastboot or on the phone if you flashed it
4) Go to Advanced - Terminal
5) Enter `echo SYSTEMLESS=true>>/data/.supersu` press Enter and exit back to home
6) Flash latest stable or beta SuperSU zip
7) Reboot and enjoy root!

I never do auto rooting... I always follow the guides for any phone.... I was just enquiring of him if he had done it that way ????
As to your 2nd point I had done a TWRP of my stock rom for the merlin,,, and then like a dumbass i had kept it on my sd card (64gb ) which suddenly decided to die on me.... so i lost that...
Anyway,, when i try to put back my MOTO GTE to stock, i will flash the firmware and then try the systemless root,,, have never done that before..
thanks for the stepby step guide..

I'm assuming you have trouble rooting because it's marshmallow. Just another version of SuperSU is required. Also, you can completely "skip" the root process. Just install a new ROM that has inbuilt root through the recovery and update the SuperSU binary if needed. That's what I did

[RECOVERY][addison] Official TWRP for Moto Z Play

Team Win Recovery Project 3.x, or twrp3 for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. Its a fully touch driven user interface no more volume rocker or power buttons to mash. The GUI is also fully XML driven and completely theme-able. You can change just about every aspect of the look and feel.
Unlocked bootloader is required.

README:
Code:
Our device comes with forced encryption and, more important,
verity which checks at every boot if /system partition has been changed or not.
If /system has been changed, verity won't allow booting your device which means
you can't flash anything unless you disable verity.
Installation
To temporarily boot this recovery:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
To permanently flash it:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Disable Verity
Oreo
Flash this kernel (only compatible with latest oreo build, OPNS27.76-12-22-9) through fastboot (fastboot flash boot boot-noverity.img) or TWRP (Install -> Install image -> Select Boot -> Swipe to install)
Verity is now disabled, you can flash Magisk or anything else
Marshmallow/Nougat
If you aren't going to root your device, you can use my patcher (that disables forced encryption as well) else Magisk/SuperSU will do this for you.
In order to definitely get rid of encryption, if you wish to, you'll have to erase userdata with fastboot

After flashing SU i ended beeing stuck in boot.
But installing and using the Recovery worked without problems.
Pretty much what's going on here as well
I am having trouble getting the phone to start again.
Installing the stock firmware results in an error:
"Could not find 'META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary' in the zip file.
Error installing zip file '%path_to_zip'. "
Possibly a corrupt download? Looks like the updater-binary file didn't get to your hard drive in one piece...
Does it work root from the recovery itself without needing to flash the .zip?
in the chinese twrp this method works without problem
Yeah, I tried this one, seems to work just fine until you try and flash SuperSU with it. For the official releases it fails to extract ramdisk and the system-mode ones it doesn't patch dm-verity. I ended up using the Chinese one to get a rooted addison.

Anyone running Xposed Nougat on rooted stock?

So now that the unofficial Xposed for Nougat is out, has anyone gotten it to work on a rooted stock mate 9?
It looked like it might be just for magisk, but root is via SuperSU for us.

First off you need to be on a B182+ firmware and flash Twrp 3.1.0-1.
For decrypted (Wipe - 'Format Data' in twrp then back to twrp start screen and Reboot - Reboot recovery, this erases all user data/apps and you need to flash public and hw zip after you've formatted) use the official Magisk 13.3 zip: http://tiny.cc/latestmagisk
For encrypted (no need to format data or do anything special, downside is you won't be able to backup /data partition) use: https://mega.nz/#!I4FQzbyA!gBZelHmD3lGGwzGISUXkf7GQTUAq5i785d_qPHQOaVE
If you have any root flashed currently, flash back stock boot.img before flashing Magisk.

Problem with twrp not installing SuperSU

I have a Honor 8 with Emui 5.0.1, Android 7 model FRDL09 , build FRD- L09C432B394.
I have unlocked the bootloader and installed 3.0.3-0 Twrp but when i try to install SuperSU from the recovery i can't (the phone start the operation but after 2 or 3 seconds on the screen there are some very fast message and the phone just reboot. I was able to read the message that is:
- System-less Mode, Boot Image Support required
- creating image
I tried with 2 different version of SuperSU (sr3-SuperSU-2.79-Sr3- 2017 0114223742.zip and SuperSU-v2.82-Sr5-Permissive.zip but i have the same problem
Anyone can help to figure out what i'm doing wrong?
Tia
