I saw some where that people were setting the screen resolution to run at 1920x1080 in order to get better battery. I can't seem to relocate the thread I saw it on. Anyone know how to do this?

You won't really get better battery life out of a lower resolution since the same amount of pixels are still being pushed. Instead, you'll probably get better performance and less lag since the cpu and gpu wont have to work as hard.

Finally figured it out. Messes up too much crap to he worth it. I'll stick to stock. Battery life is fine I suppose.

I've been running smooth display (90 hz) since I got my pixel 4 xl. Just switched it off yesterday and can't notice any difference. Now I'm wondering why all the initial negative reviews about it switching back and forth initially when you can't even really tell?

Are u seriously?
Every phone that I take, now fells so choppy and uncomfortable. Same if I just switch off smooth display.

I'm with you. Turned it off since a while now cause of the colour shift. A barely notice a huge difference. Phone feels smooth anyway.

Maybe you're not sensitive to frame rate difference. To me it's much smoother! I've been spoiled lol. 60 FPS looks so choppy now ?

Within settings or your app drawer, just scroll up and down on 60hz and then do it on 90hz. You should instantly notice the difference in the refresh rate. [emoji848]

Yes this is definitely an easy way to show the difference. Website scrolling is also another area I notice it most. It's as noticable as watching a sports highlight in 60 FPS in YouTube vs not.

Scrolling anything; address book, website, mail list, etc. There is more to it than the refresh though and it isn't easy to separate everything out and see it on it's own. My daughter and son and law picked up a Tmo bogo on Note 10s over the holidays and we were comparing smoothness between mine and theirs and the Pix is no question smoother when sitting side by side and doing the same thing. We thought it was the refresh so I put it to 60 where presumably the better specced Note would show it's stuff but it didn't happen there either, the Pix is still smoother. As an aside I haven't been on a Samsung device since they screwed my over on my international Note 8 with the bootloader shenanigans and man, those whites are really, really, REALLY, blue. Loved the brightness though, gotta troll through Magisk and see about getting some boost action going on.

Another reason people might not notice the difference is between 90hz and 60hz is because of the apps they use. Not all apps are drawn at 90fps which in turns causes the display to render at 60hz as well. Google maps for example only does 60fps and thus you won't notice the benefit of the 90hz display. But UI element (such as scrolling through settings or app drawer) definitely highlights the 90hz refresh rate and should instantly be noticeable.

When developer options is enabled just use the search function up top. Type in 90hz and you should be able the find the setting to force 90hz.

Keep tapping build number and it will appear under system settings
I'm in the middle on this argument. I can clearly see the difference between 60 and 90 when scrolling. That being said I don't care about being able to read something while I'm scrolling... Lol
I have not really tested the difference in battery life with or without the smooth enabled but I'm not losing any sleep over no having it enabled. I guess if I had it forced for a while I'd prolly miss it more if I switched it off then.

I was on the OnePlus 7 Pro before the 4 XL so I've been using 90Hz for a while now. I mention that because I feel the difference is more and more noticeable as time goes on. The longer you use 90, the more significant the difference is from 60.
That's been my experience at least. I have 90 force enabled as well. However, I use Tasker to disable 90 once my phone hits 40%.

It's definitely noticeable in any app that supports the refresh rate and system UI. I can't go back to 60hz and same with my monitor at home it's 144hz and the difference between 60 is a day and night difference. Once you go high refresh rate you don't go back! As for battery life impact it's probably there but I don't care. With my usage and using cell data I can make it over a day without having to charge. Adaptive battery and optimizations really go a long way.

Same way as before - tap on Build Number 7 times to enable Developer Mode. The Force 90Hz option is still there for me on the January update
If i Switch to 90hz force do you notice more battery consumption?
Been using the phone for 24 hours now, don't really see much point in the 120hz rate, only notice it slightly smoother if scrolling up and down quickly.
I guess it's more for games (?).
I will stick with 60hz and save some battery, seems fine to me.
The 120hz are very good, the problem is that there are so many lags and frame drop.

same here, turned it off... 60hz is fine... 120hz impact on battery is not worth it
I'm more interested in its 240Hz touch sampling rate...
I think the screen response time is around 4-5ms which makes the image smear and not take advantage of the 120hz

Yes 60Hz / 120Hz on the daily usage is noticeable in things like scrolling and some animation, but I can live without it.
On gaming is a completely different story, is a lot noticeable. I'm really not a mobile gamer but installed the old Max Payne (one of my all time favourite games) for the dead times and it's a hell of a difference between 60Hz / 120Hz.
As a 60Hz PC peasant right now, I prefer look at Max Payne in my phone that at my PC! :laugh:

Same, the difference is night and day . I will never go back to 60hz after this.
True 60hz is horrible after experiencing 90/120 Hz I have a TCL 10 pro with a Amoled Display and comparing it with its 60hz the Poco X3 wins hands down for fluid even if it's not Amoled wish they had made it Amoled or Oled would of smashed any competition out of the water I would of even paid bit extra Lol , few things I've noticed are bit choppy is Google feed and play store when scrolling but prob don't support 120hz yet it's the same on my OnePlus 8 pro even
Hopefully future updates will iron out the niggles but for the price I'm blown away with it so far only gripe is LCD is so dated now but then for the price it's expected is a little bit of light bleed at the bottom of display anybody else notice this ??? Or am I just unfortunate and have a bad one if so I can get it replaced with Amazon ,[emoji106]

Same problem here, the Google feed seems to run at 60hz. The drawer also semms to drop some frame, isn't amoot as the home page.
If you are interested, you can check the current refreshrate and fps in any app by going into the developer settings --> power monitor --> press "start" on Frame Rate Monitor Tools.
I always have to press the start button twice, then it shows the current fps in green. Current refreshrate is shown with blue background.
The adaptive refreshrate works good in my opinion, e.g. in Youtube it quickly jumps down to 30hz / 60hz depending on the type of video.

You are correct with YouTube running on 60Hz.
But it is strange that the poco launcher is constantly running on 120fps without touching the screen.
I switched to nova launcher. Same results
They haven't implemented it very well. It felt better on the realme 6 and x50. The recents and Google page feels like 60

Mario Kart average was about 115fps, menus locked at 30
For the ammount of battery that 120hz chugs it's not worth it for me
I've also tried with this tool, and i've seen major frame drop in the home screen, like 115 to 100 is a second, and thats the moments you can see the stutter. The multitask menu runs at 90hz, and youtube and google discover at 60. But there is an issue, this phone never reach the 120hz, except when in idle, and this frame variations make the user experience way "laggy": it would be a good idea to lock the fps at 100hz, but very stable, than a continously dropping and false 120hz.

I can't see 120Hz Slow, unrealistic screen. HDR looks like old display. Whit yellowish, green photos.

I've been pretty consistently getting about 6 hours SOT the first week with my normal routine/setup (Wi-Fi only, adaptive smoothness, rarely over 50% brightness) mainly using the inner screen. Not bad, I assume, for a device like this. With 96Hz so far it seems to be stretching that out close to 9.
What is the point in this since the inner screen has a refresh rate of 120Hz?
EDIT: Ah never mind, it is to prolong battery life, I see.
Btw for those of you who might want to test if this works, you can go to "https://www.displayhz.com/" and see it there. I recommend to use the Quick Tiles for toggling between 120Hz and 96Hz so that you can see it going into effect (in both ways).

Call me insane, but I can genuinely see the difference between 96hz and 120hz. Having used 144hz+ monitors to game for the better part of a decade, I guess I'm used to high refresh displays.
Brief update: I've uninstalled the app.
I noticed my battery life actually got significantly worse because I tend to run the phone at 120hz. Being on YouTube/twitch a lot, I typically don't need 120hz but the app forces 120hz rather than allowing it to drop to 30hz or 60hz when I'm watching content.
I hope there aren't any adverse affects.. actually - I'll likely just factory reset it and start fresh.

You guys should use the newer version which is made for the Note 20 Ultra, which sets the Refresh Rate to a variable instead of locking it, because that is the exact problem. I also used the first one to begin with, which locked the Refresh Rate at 96Hz instead of allowing it to be variable. If you use the one for the Note 20 Ultra (posted a page back) instead, you will see that it should work much better.

I did use the one linked at the bottom of the first page, and didn't see any options for a variable refresh rate? Two quick setting options appear which allows me to toggle 120hz, 96hz, and 60hz, and the other setting is to see the current fps. And I recall when I open the app, there wasn't anything there apart from a bit of text? Kind of don't want to install it to avoid messing with settings since battery life is pretty important.
Edit: I see that the app does force 60hz after a certain amount of time (on its own volition). That being said, my battery life got significantly worse so I'll stick to stock for now.

It's just the stock system behavior.
96hz max mode just limit the ramping up of refresh rate to 96hz instead of 120hz. Your battery life being worse probably due to other factor/s.
I did like the 96HZ Mode...............It saved battery...and works on requirement
I found something interesting with this mod.
It works all good, you can set the max hz refresh rate to 96 and the behavior its the same as stock, it takes more or less the same time when the screen is idle to drop to 60, and the smoothness you loss from 120 to 96 its not much noticeable

When you are on youtube (vanced app in this particular case) and you are seeing a 60fps clip, the stock refresh rate goes to 60hz like the video was at 30 or 24, but if you set the 96hz mode it never drops to 60
This could be a problem if you watch a lot of youtube at 60 fps and could affect somehow to battery life, which is the thing we are trying to improve
With other videos or apps i havent noticed any problem

That's not what I'm experiencing. Using the Note 20 Ultra version, refresh rate drops to 60hz when watching videos in Vanced with 96hz maximum adaptive rate. I was going to post a screenshot but every time I touch the screen the refresh rate jumps back up (which is expected behavior).

Are they 60 fps videos? In case they are it has to be specified in the settings where you switch the resolution...
Other videos works perfect for me, even in Vanced

I just picked up the OnePlus 9 a few days ago. I've been an iPhone user for as long as I can remember, though I have owned android phones in the past. The last one I owned when I decided to "switch it up" was the Galaxy S7 Edge. I absolutely love the 120hz refresh rate of this phone but it drains battery terribly. I'm talking 20%+ on low-medium brightness just playing Pokemon Go.
My question is, if I were to root the device, would I be able to tinker with the display settings to set it to a happy medium of 90hz? Surely since it can handle 120hz, it can handle 90hz. I know the refresh rate isn't variable on it but I wasn't sure if I could "force" it. I'm not sure of the implications of that. I just want to still have a decent refresh rate without my battery draining that badly. It even states in the battery portion of settings that changing it from 120hz to 60hz would increase my battery life by anywhere from 10-12 hours.
Is this possible? I'm not sure what my options are. I was going to get the N200 but compared to the 9 on a hardware level, it's not even worth it just for the 90hz display.
