I am looking into rooting my Pixel (Google Store) and have researched the steps to do so. I can follow the instructions provided but don't know what or why each step is needed such as why a custom recovery (i.e., TWRP) is needed or an access manager (i.e., SuperSU) is needed; I will do more research and see what I can find (if you have links to these, that would be great).
The reason for this post is asking if installing SuperSU during the rooting process (TWRP and then SuperSU) is absolutely needed. Or can I just TWRP and then install SuperSU through Google Play after the reboot?
Thanks

Thanks, Yup that was the guide I was looking at. Looks like I would need to install SuperSU during the process and not after. So what is the difference between the SuperSU app that can be downloaded from the Chainfire's website and that in Google Play?

Apps you install from the Play Store, including SuperSU, can't gain root access by themselves. You get root access by flashing SuperSU from TWRP. If an official version of SuperSU gets released in the Play Store, you can feel free to update to it, but that's just the app itself - there's much more behind the scenes going on when you flash SuperSU from custom recovery (TWRP).

When I open up superSU, it says:
There is no SU binary installed, and super SU cannot install it.
If you just upgraded to android 4.3, you need to manually re-root.
If I turn the Nexus on in recovery mode, it still says it's unlocked.
So at this point, is there anything I can do to restore root status without factory resetting? I made a backup with titanium backup but it was a while ago so I would rather not use it if there is another way.
I've read somewhere that rooting it should mean OTA updates should no longer work but somehow, it still went through and I updated it without thinking too much.
Download the supersu zip file and flash it in recovery.

I don't have twrp or cwm installed yet. Which one is generally simpler/easier to install/use?
So I installed goomanager and tried to install twrp, but it all goes back to the same problem which was that I am now not in root mode anymore.
Also what do you mean by flashing the zip? Which options am I supposed to use?

I've been using TWRP with no problem and it's been awhile since I've used CWM. I've never used a toolkit or flashify but with adb it would probably take a couple minutes max to flash either one.

Choose "Install" in recovery, with either TWRP or CWM is flashing the zip.

Problem is, I didn't install twrp when I had root access before, and now when I try to use it, it says I need root to use it.
Can I flash the zip using adb in the fastboot recovery menu?
What should I do from here?

Sorry I've never done that. I guess you could adb push superuser.apk to the system but you still need the binary wherever that goes. Honestly I would just flash TWRP using adb and use TWRP to flash the SuperSu zip.

Not yet, I just saw it as an option while reading around.
How would I install twrp with that image file?
All tutorials I've found said I needed root to install it in the first place.

No.You do not need root to install a custom recovery. You need an unlocked bootloader. How did you get root in the first place? You must have used a toolkit of some kind? Use it again? I've only every used adb so I can't help with any toolkits but lots of people use them, I guess!
Download the latest TWRP or CWM recovery. Put it in the same folder as your adb and fastboot files. Open a command prompt and type adb reboot bootloader(you have to make sure developer settings are enabled and USB debugging is checked). Then flash recovery using fastboot by typing fastboot flash recovery name_of_file.img and then you can flash the supersu zip file.

Hey guys, I found a way to install Xposed on the Alcatel Onetouch Flint by Cricket wireless. First, your phone must be rooted and you must have SuperSU installed. Next, you need to download FlashFire from Google play. Now download the latest version of the Xposed framework installer zip here: http://dl-xda.xposed.info/framework/sdk22/arm/
You also need the Xposed apk for lollipop here, JUST DOWNLOAD DON'T INSTALL IT YET: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3383776&d=1435601440
Now open FlashFire andd grant it root access. Hit the plus button and hit flash zip or OTA. Navigate to the Xposed installer zip. This is important: UNCHECK MOUNT SYSTEM READ WRITE. If you don't uncheck this it won't work. Press the check to continue then scroll to the bottom and hit the lightning button to flash. Your screen will go black for a minute before the zip flashes. After its done your phone will reboot. After it finishes rebooting, install the Xposed apk, then you're done.

Try installing SuperSU to /system. Open SuperSU and click settings and click install SuperSU to /system. It will tell you to reboot after the app closes. After you do that and reboot, try FlashFire again
Before I do that is SuperSu supposed to ask me to update everytime I open it? I also noticed that rootking has its own root access manager

Uninstall SuperSu. Then try this: http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html?m=1 Make sure to download the zip next to where it says "a newer version" (The second link).
Thanks, I finally got it but had to use SuperSu me pro then had to install SuperSu as a system app then delete both of the KingRoot apps using uninstaller from the play store then SuperSu finally fully updated. Wow Im surprised SuperSUme worked for you. I tried that first and it just hung after the first step then it crashed. We don't have custom recovery yet cuz we can't unlock the bootloader yet. I found a setting in developer options that says "Allow the bootloader to be unlocked" but I don't know how to actually unlock it after enabling that option.
Yea I had to go thru a few different versions of it for it to work. About the unlocked bootloader part it kinda seems like the idol 3 and the Flint are similar you might try the steps used in the idol 3 instructions to unlock the bootloader I would but I'm waiting for the new LCD screen for my laptop.

Installation of Xposed via Xposed apk
I initially backed up via Flash fire and in a bold move even for me,I downloaded and installed Xposed via the 3.1.1 apk.It can be found on the Xposed Lollipop thread at bottom of first post.So far it works fine and even the limited modules I've installed via the apk work fine.I'm in no time at suggesting this will work for anyone else, just stating what worked for me.Ultimately your device is your responsibility. My advice is be patient and read entire threads.I sacrificed three of these devices to soft bricks thinking I knew better than what 7 years of knowledge should have already told me.

I have tried TWRP (twrp.me/devices/googlepixel.html) and the Unified Android Toolkit (skipsoft.net/download/uat-v156/) to root the Pixel I bought directly from Google. With TWRP, I cannot see the .zip I downloaded (the phone is encrypted and /sdcard/* are all gibberish names; I'm never prompted for a decrypting password when booting for recovery) and with the Toolkit I end up in a reboot loop (I've tried twice with the same results).
I'm surprised that the Toolkit thinks my build is "Verizon" (NDE63X). I'm not sure if that matters.
Thoughts? Pointers? Diagnostics? TIA.

I highly recommend that if you're going to be doing stuff like this to your phone you get familiar with ADB and fastboot otherwise you're just asking for trouble. Each of the threads on custom recovery and root have the links and instructions including commands, read everything twice since you're new to this and I mean everything.

Unfortunately, this method using SuperSU will break your fingerprint/PIN protection.
If you want to try, simply flash the patched img over the stock img (in TWRP) and install SuperSU from the Play store.

There is full root. Here are the steps for the regular Mate 9
1) Download TWRP 3.0.2-2 from here and fastboot flash it:

2) Boot into TWRP (volume up+power) Go to Wipe, Format Data, then type in yes. Then reboot recovery.

4) Flash Superuser from here:

5) Boot up fully. Go into the Play Store and download PHH Superuser. Or you can download the newer beta here. Install it like any other apk:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298931027
6) Congratulations, you no longer are encrypted, twrp will see your internal storage and data properly and you have full root. Now do a backup of your current rom in TWRP.

Just to discuss.
Steps 2 and 3 can be merged, if using modified script changes.sh inside of superuser.zip.
Sure, flashing decrypted boot does not require clean stock boot, so we have right boot before installing superuser
But on other side there will be unexpected problems if we will use prepared boot.
I noticed that boot images are different by version. One has additional code to thermal sensors, other doesn't.
Hi also wanted to clarify that this boot image can be flashed on any regular mate 9 and any firmware. Or is it only for a specific version of mate 9 with the same firmware as the boot.img. Thanks for any advice

Not really need. If you are interesting only root and writeable system, then don't format data.
Can't say anything about fingerprint sensor - I never used it.
I haven't tried backing up in twrp yet. Will do so later today. When I flashed the public and hw zips all my huawei apps came back but not the extra bloat like Facebook or todoist etc. Not to bothered as I don't need them. If you don't wipe data first to decrypt and then flssh the decrypted boot you'll probably end up in a bootloop. I'll have to make a decrypted boot thread with a few different boot images for those still on older systems (B112, B029 etc)
Thanks that would be great and very helpful to others

Someone state that one of the root methods broke the finger print scanner, does this method from @ajsmsg78 correct that issue? And is there any other side effects or "broke" items after the process?

Fingerprint works fine for me after rooting.
Have you tried android pay? TiBU works without issues? Any chance OTA updates could still work? Thanks.
For all models...?
Just to be clear; which model do you have? Would the boot.img work for all models? I have the AL00.

There is full root. Here are the steps for the regular Mate 9
1) Download TWRP 3.0.2-2 from here and fastboot flash it:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120697579
2) Boot into TWRP (volume up+power) Go to Wipe, Format Data, then type in yes. Then reboot recovery.
3) Flash my decrypted boot.img from here:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=152685
4) Flash Superuser from here:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=817550096634746024
5) Boot up fully. Go into the Play Store and download PHH Superuser. Or you can download the newer beta here. Install it like any other apk:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298931027
6) Congratulations, you no longer are encrypted, twrp will see your internal storage and data properly and you have full root. Now do a backup of your current rom in TWRP.

I don't use Android pay but the fingerprint scanner works fine so far for me after rooting. OTA should work fine but I need confirmation of it working by someone.

I have the MHA-L29C567 US version. I made a boot image thread you can go to for a link to the different boot images.

Yeah, you can. When you are formatting data, encryption is going off. Then need use modified boot to prevent encryption back..

Are you saying that if you just flash superuser to gain root but do not decrypt, you can't do backups and restores with TiBU? And remove system apps? I was under the impression from another thread that decrypting was only necessary for TWRP data access, and would not prevent TiBU features from working.
deleted sorry wrong thread
I'm currently rooting my phone for the second time (Samsung Galaxy J5(2016) [Exact Model: SM-J510FN]) and the final step is to install SuperSU through TWRP; it worked fine the first time I rooted, but for some reason this time the file is corrupt (It's the exact same file as the last time).
Solutions?

He's trying to flash in .zip format so that he can root his device. Installing from Playstore won't do them any good because the su binaries aren't in system yet, you have to root first to get the binaries.
The only way installing SuperSU from Playstore will work is if they rooted their device with an app such as Towelroot or Kingroot first to get the su binaries in system and then installing SuperSU from Playstore. I don't think they are rooting this way, they seem to be flashing TWRP recovery and then flashing SuperSU.zip, this is the most common method for rooting devices, using rooting apps is not the normal way of doing things, the apps are usually used when the device has a locked bootloader and won't allow flashing TWRP or SuperSU.zip to gain root.
