Need more info. What ROM.....S-on, S-Off......what recovery......you know. As much of a description of what you're working with as you can think of. How are you flashing, what had you done right before this happened if anything, etc., etc......

Have you by any chance tried out CWM 6.0 and decided to go back to 5.5.0.4? Did you extract the "boot.img" file from the ROM & fastboot flash boot boot.img thru ADB AFTER you flashed your ROM.zip file since you are S-On?

You won't be too happy with 4.0.0.9 if you ever let your phone go COMPLETLY dead. It will brick it.

Hasoon's toolkit is for unlocking, installing CWM & superuser if my memory serves me though. You can flash your ROMs thu recovery (CWM) but with S-On you will have to extract the "boot.img" file and flash it seperately thru ADB because HBoot will stop an unsigned file it sees as a Radio from flashing if S-On.
There ARE a couple of other versions of CWM....5.5.0.4 & 6.0.0.0. (6.0 has some REAL issues though and has bricked several phones so IF you notice it....don't USE it.)
This will explain it much better to you...... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508556

If you flashed your ROM and then the boot image after you did that it shouldn't be a problem. Did you read the post above yours and answer those question though? Did you check the link I provided and understand fully what it was talking about? That is VERY important.

if you dont you need to do this ASAP because when you are on you have to fastboot .img files to make it work im not too familiar as i am s-off. follow my first link to set up adb and fastboot then go to the link weekend posted. (which is stickied in the development section).
Move your ROM.zip file to the root directory of your phone first. Then put the boot.img file in the root directory of your computer since it's already in the windows path. that's " C:\ " Since you already have Hasoon's toolkit installed we'll use that instead of putting you thru the ADB installation right now for time & simplicity's sake.
Go to Windows Explorer & navigate to the folder you have his toolkit in and copy the name of the folder down EXACTLY. Then you can pull up your command prompt window again. When it initiates it will say C:\ sumpthin....sumpthin...sumpthin. From there type CD\ and it will "change directory" back to C:\ THEN you can type cd\ "whatever you named the folder that has Hasoon's toolkit in it".
That will take you to that folder just like explorer will do. Just let it sit there for a second.
On your phone in Recovery you wipe user data/ factory reset 3 times then you can....
Wipe cache 3 times and toggle down to "Advanced"
That will take you to another screen where you will see "Dalvik Cache"
Wipe that 3 times as well.
Then hit "Go back" & return to the previous screen & select "install zip from SD card"
Once complete leave your phone sitting & still plugged in to the usb
NOW....go back to your computer and type....
reboot bootloader
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
Once your phone reboots, leave it alone for 5 minutes to let everything settle in and you should be "good to go".

When I open up superSU, it says:
There is no SU binary installed, and super SU cannot install it.
If you just upgraded to android 4.3, you need to manually re-root.
If I turn the Nexus on in recovery mode, it still says it's unlocked.
So at this point, is there anything I can do to restore root status without factory resetting? I made a backup with titanium backup but it was a while ago so I would rather not use it if there is another way.
I've read somewhere that rooting it should mean OTA updates should no longer work but somehow, it still went through and I updated it without thinking too much.
Download the supersu zip file and flash it in recovery.

So I installed goomanager and tried to install twrp, but it all goes back to the same problem which was that I am now not in root mode anymore.

I've been using TWRP with no problem and it's been awhile since I've used CWM. I've never used a toolkit or flashify but with adb it would probably take a couple minutes max to flash either one.

Sorry I've never done that. I guess you could adb push superuser.apk to the system but you still need the binary wherever that goes. Honestly I would just flash TWRP using adb and use TWRP to flash the SuperSu zip.

How would I install twrp with that image file?

No.You do not need root to install a custom recovery. You need an unlocked bootloader. How did you get root in the first place? You must have used a toolkit of some kind? Use it again? I've only every used adb so I can't help with any toolkits but lots of people use them, I guess!
Download the latest TWRP or CWM recovery. Put it in the same folder as your adb and fastboot files. Open a command prompt and type adb reboot bootloader(you have to make sure developer settings are enabled and USB debugging is checked). Then flash recovery using fastboot by typing fastboot flash recovery name_of_file.img and then you can flash the supersu zip file.

I used chainfires autocf root file from here

and followed a youtube tutorial.
When I try adb devices it shows my serial number followed by sideload.
I've tried sideloading both twrp and the superSU.zip, and they fail to verify and the installation aborts =\
Have a rooted Verizon HTC One M8. Didn't have a custom rom on it. I was just happy with not having ads, and being able to have access to files on the phone. The one problem that I kept having was it constantly telling me that I needed to do an update. I tried freezing Update files in Titanium Backup, but I would still see the notifications. Followed advice elsewhere on the internet, and tried to Force Close Download Manager. I then went into TWRP and wiped Cache and Dalvic Cache. Now, it's completely stuck on the white HTC screen on bootup. I can boot into Recovery, but I'm not sure what to do to get the phone back to working condition.
Please help! This is not the Sunday afternoon that I was envisioning today. I just wanted the update notifications to stop.

You will be up to date. When you flash twrp You can grab the latest su.zip from here http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
Wipe cache when flashing su.
Sunshine was an exploit to gain s off. Not root. S off means you can flash whatever you want. In this case, root is just an app you flash.

Still have about 15 minutes on the download. Sorry for all the questions, but I want to make sure I get what all you are saying.
1) Once the download finishes, I run the program and follow the prompts. This will return me to stock, not rooted.
2) I then need to flash SuperSU using TWRP. This will get me rooted again? Where do I place the .zip on my external SD card? I've had problems with TWRP in that I never see anything that I can install when I go to the Install screen there. It just says TWRP. No files. I try to navigate to the external SD, but there's never anything there that I can install.

Extract the fastboot/adb zip. Copy the new twrp image into this new folder. Open the newly extracted folder and while holding the shift button right click on your mouse. Select open command prompt here.
Put phone in fastboot mode and connect to your pc. Run the following command to flash twrp.
Fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-m8_wlv.img
After this completes select boot loader on the phone screen. Then select recovery. Choose wipe and select advanced. Only select cache and wipe. When done hit the home button icon at the bottom. Then click install. Scroll down and find your su.zip and flash it. Reboot when done

Got the phone back to operational. Went looking in apps, and SuperSU was not listed. Everything says that I'm rooted, but it was not there. Googled SuperSU apk, and followed a link to download it via Google Play. Redownloaded it, and when opened, it says "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it." Also, the damn update that started this whole mess just popped up on the screen again.

Did you flash the su.zip in recovery?
Also, since you wiped cache the ota should be gone. Go to settings and chose app manager. Slide over to the right until you see all at the top. Hit the magnifying glass and search for htcdm. When it finds it click on it. Force stop and clear data for it.
Also, since you are running stock with just a few tweaks of your own, you may want to flash santods ota killer zip. It would prevent what started this off in the first place and remove the leftover prompt in the same shot.

Unfortunately, this method using SuperSU will break your fingerprint/PIN protection.
If you want to try, simply flash the patched img over the stock img (in TWRP) and install SuperSU from the Play store.

Do you have option to restore your device in case of hardbrick? Obtaining full root on Mate 9 must be done with knowledge what are you doing and what tools are doing...
There is full root. Here are the steps for the regular Mate 9
1) Download TWRP 3.0.2-2 from here and fastboot flash it:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120697579
2) Boot into TWRP (volume up+power) Go to Wipe, Format Data, then type in yes. Then reboot recovery.
3) Flash my decrypted boot.img from here:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=152685
4) Flash Superuser from here:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=817550096634746024
5) Boot up fully. Go into the Play Store and download PHH Superuser. Or you can download the newer beta here. Install it like any other apk:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298931027
6) Congratulations, you no longer are encrypted, twrp will see your internal storage and data properly and you have full root. Now do a backup of your current rom in TWRP.

Just to discuss.
Steps 2 and 3 can be merged, if using modified script changes.sh inside of superuser.zip.
Sure, flashing decrypted boot does not require clean stock boot, so we have right boot before installing superuser
But on other side there will be unexpected problems if we will use prepared boot.
I noticed that boot images are different by version. One has additional code to thermal sensors, other doesn't.
Hi also wanted to clarify that this boot image can be flashed on any regular mate 9 and any firmware. Or is it only for a specific version of mate 9 with the same firmware as the boot.img. Thanks for any advice

Hi just to update I followed the instructions by ajsmsp78 and gained full root and was able to install meefik busybox and also uninstall system apps which I couldn't do before. When I flashed the boot.img and superuser and booted up some of my apps were missing. I then flashed the public and hw zips for my region and most of them were back. I now have decrypted data and full root. Thanks a lot

did you tried to back up n restore in twrp?
If I flash that boot.img it will brick my phone, I've tried it and had to flash the original boot.img as of now I have the phh superuser root. The flash method I used was fastboot and yes, I have my bootloader unlocked. Been rooting android phones for 5 - 6 years
Do I really need to wipe the data partition? Will the fingerprint sensor remain working?

Yeah, you can. When you are formatting data, encryption is going off. Then need use modified boot to prevent encryption back.

Not really need. If you are interesting only root and writeable system, then don't format data.
Can't say anything about fingerprint sensor - I never used it.
I haven't tried backing up in twrp yet. Will do so later today. When I flashed the public and hw zips all my huawei apps came back but not the extra bloat like Facebook or todoist etc. Not to bothered as I don't need them. The only thing missing was the magazine lock wallpapers but I downloaded replacements from the theme app. All good now. Thanks

I also flashed that boot.img previously and bricked my phone. However this time it worked, the only thing I did different was to wipe data in twrp. Don't know if this made any difference but it worked

If you don't wipe data first to decrypt and then flssh the decrypted boot you'll probably end up in a bootloop. I'll have to make a decrypted boot thread with a few different boot images for those still on older systems (B112, B029 etc)
Thanks that would be great and very helpful to others

Someone state that one of the root methods broke the finger print scanner, does this method from @ajsmsg78 correct that issue? And is there any other side effects or "broke" items after the process?

Fingerprint works fine for me after rooting.
Have you tried android pay? TiBU works without issues? Any chance OTA updates could still work? Thanks.
For all models...?
Just to be clear; which model do you have? Would the boot.img work for all models? I have the AL00.

I don't use Android pay but the fingerprint scanner works fine so far for me after rooting. OTA should work fine but I need confirmation of it working by someone.

Are you saying that if you just flash superuser to gain root but do not decrypt, you can't do backups and restores with TiBU? And remove system apps? I was under the impression from another thread that decrypting was only necessary for TWRP data access, and would not prevent TiBU features from working.
deleted sorry wrong thread
I'm wondering if it's possible to root my phone, install an app that's required to be installed as system then unroot my phone back to normal?
I'm on the latest stable miui 8.5.2.0. I'd like to install the new pixel launcher and have Google now working which requires the APK to be installed as a system app.
Require unrooted phone for work/banking apps.
Easier way: copy the apk to /system/app/ in twrp. When you reboot, it should be installed as a system app.

Oh cool I never knew about that way. But I don't have TWRP installed. It took me forever to get the vendor ROM off my Xiaomi phone and get back to stock.
Are you saying I should install TWRP and then unroot?

If you install TWRP, and copy the APK, then it won't root your phone at all. You can re-flash the stock recovery after, if you want.

Oh thats so awesome! I believe I read somewhere that you need the stock recovery in order to do OTA updates, so that would definitely be preferable.
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. One more question, is there a guide anywhere on how to put the stock recovery back onto the Mi 5s Plus?

I don't think so, but all you need to do is flash a stock recovery image with fastboot. You have to find one online.

You actually don't need to flash TWRP at all.
1: Download TWRP on your computer.
2: Make sure you have the APK on your phone.
3: Run the command "fastboot boot twrp.img" in fastboot mode, where twrp.img is the TWRP filename. On Linux, this may need to be run as root. This command will temporarily boot TWRP, without flashing it.
4: Copy your APK to /system/app/
5: Reboot into android. The app should be installed.
I'm curious why you need to install an app as a system app?

Whoa!! no way! That is so much easier and dont have to mess about with trying to but the phone back to stock after. Youre the best!
I want to use the new pixel 2 launcher, and for all the functionality to work (i.e google now integration) the app needs to be installed as a system app!
This was make it so simple to try it out without making any permanent changes. Thanks again!

I guessed it was to use the pixel launcher. You could get a modded version instead of installing in the system, though.
I tried out the launcher too, but it was really buggy and laggy for me.

Yeah I've tried out the modded version and sucks that the google now functionality doesnt work, and as you said its quite buggy. Read in a few places that installing as system really helps, and with your method it seems we can try it out without switching my phone off of being completely stock (also forgot to mention that I need stock recovery to properly use the phone encryption feature as required by my company policy).
