Disable Bixby FULLY? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

What we need to do is disable it FULLY, not just the button that executes Bixby. It's still running "under the hood"…
From Samsung's own web page:
"Bixby Talks: Bixby knows your phone’s apps and how to use them."
"Bixby sees: Bixby lives inside your Camera, Gallery and Internet to give you a deeper understanding of what you’re looking at"
"Bixby learns your routine, so you’ll always have the right content ready when you need it. From your recent messages and upcoming events, to your next Uber ride and daily news—Bixby pulls the most important information from different apps"

Probably need root and gotta disable it.
I doubt its fully build into the framework.
But we wont know until we get our hands on it and have a look at the system

I would assume you could disable it by denying it privacy privileges. It'd be really weird if Samsung essentially tells its customers' that their data is being monitored by Samsung whether they like or not...

Google assistant can be disabled by not signing in and using it. What makes you think bixby is reading/thinking/suggesting the second you start the phone?

Just use package disabler.

As with all apps like this, you need to setup Bixby and accept the privacy notices / TOS before it collects any data (or even does anything).
Don't do that and it just does nothing, practically disabled.

How to Remap the Bixby Button!
The Bixby Button on the side of the phone can be remapped using the free "All In One Gestures App" on google play store. The Youtube Video:

Pixel - without Google Assistant

Hello, I am about to order a Google Pixel phone, but can someone tell me whether it is possible to get it without Google Assistant in the stock ROM or there are some custom ROM's without Google Assistant?
I don't like such products due to privacy violating issues but this phone is awesome.

Don't order it. All your questions have answer of no. Maybe roms in future will exist without assistant. Not yet.

It's like a corvette is awesome but can I get it with a 4 cylinder... Don't buy the corvette buy the Honda
Thanks guys!
Turn it off and don't use it. Most services Google provides on Android has an "off" switch.
Yea I don't use any of that stuff either. Not for privacy reasons just think there's no useful features
Some features I use, some I don't. As far as privacy goes just using a smartphone, email, surfing the web, etc. gets enough "user data" out there it doesn't matter all that much anyway. Unless one is doing something "questionable" it doesn't really mean much. Big business and big brother collect more about us than we realize. Phish away.......
A Google Pixel w/o the Assistant would be false advertising. Anyways, you can disable the assistant through editing the build.prop file.

It's not that really hard to prevent stealing of our data, it's not inevitable, I think we just need to choose carefully what we use.
Privacy not just goes when you use a smartphone that simply isn't designed to leak your data (we don't really need to use GAPPS), or by using an email service hosted on your own secured server with GPG encryption.
Surfing the web without being signed in to google account and using Tor is also a way to surf the web anonymously.
Big brother can't watch you if you don't use his services. It's similar to a deal with the devil
Just saying, nothing is impossible.
In general I just openly declare my mistrust of government, corporatocracy and their avarice on every media channel.
And I turn off my phone sometimes.
If anyone listens in I'm more likely to be censored than snooped! Hah.
I however DO have a secure point to point encrypted private messenger.
Use of phone is definitely complex to say least.

I think in today's age of information, there is entirely too much of it. The government would need a reason to watch you or search your information before any of it is of any use to them. Now, if you become a murder suspect, they might question why you Googled body disposal and why you purchased supplies for such. If they're looking for someone to bust doing something illegal they only need to browse social media to find pictures of people doing illegal drugs, wearing gang colors, and God knows what else. Unless you have something to hide, you should be ok... Again, in my opinion.

Don't recall if I deliberately turned off the assistant. What I've done is:
Long-press Home screen > Select Settings > Disable Show Google App
Navigate to Settings > Select Apps > Disable Google app
Pretty sure I didn't take any further steps. I no longer have Google Assistant accessible and Google App on home screen is no longer visible.

Easiest way to remap Bixby to Google Assistant on s8 (NONROOT) (WORKING ON OREO)

Hey, just wanted to share the easiest way I have discovered to remap the annoying bane of existence know as Bixby.
1. Download "BixBye" from Google Play. All credit goes to the developer. I did not make this app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=you.in.spark.bixbye
2. Download "Google Assistant" from Google Play as well. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.googleassistant
3. Open BixBye and Grant the Accessibility services, then relaunch the app. It bugs out and says you didn't Grant it until you relaunch for me.
4. Once you have done that... DO NOT use the default "Remap to... ASSISTANT" option! This is pretty buggy for me and causes screen flashes and other things. Change the action to "Remap to... LAUNCH AN APP" and make it launch Google Assistant! This will work loads better than the default option!
After months of tinkering around with bxactions and other 3rd party software, this is the easiest, bug free, costless way I have found to remap the Bixby button to Google Assistant, and it doesn't have the bug where it closes the currently running app! I hope this works great for you as well
Have a lovely day!
Here's another little trick... although it costs money, if you do have BK Package Disabler you can disable all Bixby related packages besides "Bixby Home" and "Bixby Voice" to save quite a bit of battery! You need these ones enabled unfortunately to detect the press of the button though.
I'm going to go to sleep now, I'll try to answer any questions as best as possible in the morning though.
Works perfectly on my Note 8 following your instructions. Thanks!
Thanks, works perfectly.
I come from Z3C and like a lot to use a button to open camera.
Just miss than can't take photos using button.

System Cleaners - NO

I've tried nearly all the paid android system cleaners and the devs are ripping you off. Let's take CCleaner as an example, it runs through the cookies, cache, storage etc and tells you that over 300mb has been deleted, (LIE). You go into device care and storage, might say 700mb to erase. So please stay well away from all these apps because the devs are just having a laugh, just use the stock system care.

100% percent true, the same goes for antivirus, system and weather apps. They all also need to know too much of your info and usage/data and privacy.
I not i agree with you i use SD Maid app from first day when i found it and i use it long time ago on my Galaxy S1, Note 3 and Note 8 and now on my S10+ and its best app cleaner and optimizer...But you need PRO version

I'm not really sure how accurate this app is, because according to the optimization process it's cleaned up 22GB in 5 weeks. I don't believe that one bit, I've not really added or removed many apps, files etc. So what is it cleaning?
Same here, it says that it cleans alot, but what does it clean... I have no idea.
Same thing when you put apps asleep, is it something you really need?
Im confused about this one, but have not disabled it yet.
I think to get the best answer, is to tey it out with and without. Maybe someone already done it?
Why would you disable it Papa, it's free and it's the only one that works and regarding the anti-virus (gee2012), who's ever heard of anyone getting a virus on any Samsung phone or any smart phone. I've had every Galaxy phone/tab since the S2 and without using an AV and I've never had a virus. Yet another lie by our lovely Developers.
I like the fact that the samsung one can automatically optimize once per 24 hours (I set it to be done at 5am as I am always sleeping then, even in weekends) but on my S7 edge I used SD maid which I like as well, or at least it gives you the feeling it works/cleans something but it can be a placebo effect. But by every know phone I try to install as less apps as possible and it will build up while you use it longer and longer of course.
I just asked because I was wondering if it was more or less on the battery, using it or disabling it.
Agree that I've never had any problems with the program, but someone might have got better battery life without it or the like.
I will keep it if no one can prove the opposite. Only me who is curious about someone already tested
Yeah Papa, maybe try disabling it with Package Disabler and let us know how it goes, doubt that would be eating the battery. My battery has been running great over the last 3 months since I got PD, I'll post you a list of my disabled apps if you'd like, let us know.

System apps disabled are my choice and apps I don’t/never use and maybe not be yours but my phone is 100% working. A lot of these apps you will use daily but I don't and my battery is loving it.

Remove COVID-19 contact tracing

If you go into settings and search for 'covid', you'll see settings implying that contact tracing functionality is installed.
How far does it go? It needs bluetooth but will it enable bluetooth regardless if you enable your antenna or not?
Will it show your bluetooth to be on or not?
I don't need answers to these questions. I want to remove this stuff from my phone.
My understanding is that the functionality was installed 'as a part of' and 'in an update of' Google Play-Services.
To remove it, I guess we would need a modified Google Play-Services package
or
remove Google Play-Services altogether.
I don't know to what lengths Google Play-Services is required by OxygenOS or other distros for that matter.
Google Apps won't work anymore without it. That definitely suck for Translate and Maps but I guess there are alternatives for that.
Google bought Waze. I wonder if Waze needs Google Play-Services..
I never was a fan of custom ROMs and rooting. I was perfectly happy with OxygenOS (OnePlus 7).
Now I really don't care, I want this garbage off my phone. Kr,

I am interested in this approach, as Aurora Store isn't able to fully replace google play at this time (no app purchasing)
So I have 2. questions to the community at large:
Would OpenGapps be the way forward? would this prevent googleplayserevices from be update by google thus preventing unauthorised/non-consented changes that facilitate state-level tracking.
And regard9ing the existing google services is there anyway to disable the covid19 toast notification appearing everytime time you enabled/disable bluetooth and or gps. The xposed module 'EnhancedToast' is able to do this, but only works on Andoird 6/7 or below.

Covid-19 contact tracing requires installing an app, if you, yourself, the user, have not installed some form of Covid-19 contact tracing app, then you "should" be in the clear unless you somehow agreed to/allowed/gave permission to something without knowing what you were agreeing to/allowing/giving permission to .

The only way to get rid of it is to delete Google Play Services. That's how they snuck it in. On Android Pie it's simple. Just debloat via ADB using pm list packages prompt and voila! it's gone. On Android 10 it works the same EXCEPT none of the google apps, firefox, instacart, or anything like that will WORK. So you can de-google all you want - they've baked it into everything. It's something I'm struggling with now since I was forced to upgrade.

How to make the Google Digital Wellness app work?

(Not sure if this is the proper forum, I never understood the massive split here at XDA)
I recently discovered that the Google version of this apps includes the ability to schedule the focus mode and to pause it momentarily, which makes it perfect to avoid being distracted by the phone constantly.
Of course, for some reason, Samsung's version of it doesn't include those features. I was able to install the Google app through APKMirror but it simply doesn't start. There is no error message of any kind. I don't really know the Android app and system development process so I don't how Samsung is preventing it from running or Google has banned it from doing it (The manifest? I don't know).
I tried disabling the built-in Samsung app, but it didn't work.
Is there anything that can be done? Can I maybe see the system logs when trying to open the Google version through ADB? (I'm not rooted)

Not as trusted as Playstore. Side loading is always an extra risk. At least scan the download online with Virustotal.
I meant your end goal ie the ability to do what functions?
Just to see your usage stats?
I blew that apk off the first day I had my 10+... I'll take my digital chances. I find it decidedly creepy as the mentality behind it.
I pretty much lock down data mining Gookill as much as possible.
With Google you're not the customer, you're the product. Consider the implications with that truism... very little is for free especially with Google.

Samsung has Digital Wellbeing but I can't remember what it can do.
Bixby can also be used to set routines and rules.
Do Not Disturb can be customized as well and is probably your best bet, least invasive/battery consuming option.
Google apps are nothing but trouble. Google is constantly screwing them up to the point were I still run Gmaps and Gmail in their factory load albeit heavily restricted. Playstore is usually disable as well Google play Services.
Google backup Transport, Firebase and Framework are always disabled.
Trashware. My Note 10+ runs some much better without it even if I need to do an extra step or two to work around Gookill's junk... it's worth it.
Get out of my way big sister Google...
