Anker PowerDrive +2 Quick Charge 3.0 makes Xperia XZ shuts down - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

Dears,
Recently, I bought car charger (Anker PowerDrive +2 Quick Charge 3.0) that makes a weird behavior with my XZ. When I turn off the car, the phone turns off too
if you plug the car charger out, the phone turns off.. if u plug the cable out from the phone while the car is on and the charger is plugged in, phone doesnt turn off.
I found two sony talks about the same problem
https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-XZ/In-car-USB-charging-XZ-auto-shut-down/td-p/1167260
https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xper...ther-with-car-if-I-m-charging-it/td-p/1203501
I tried another anker car charger (Anker powerdrive+ 3.0) and doesnt make the same problem.
Do you know if it is a SW problem? or I shall just through away the Anker PowerDrive +2?
Thanks,

I have the same issue! Same charger anker, makes same in different car also with the anker

This is odd... Anker tests say that it is compatible with the XZ. but seems this Anker model was not tested with the XZ. I have the Anker Powerdrive +1 car charger (has one usb port) and it works fine.

Mine is the 3.0 but with 2ports one for qc2 other for qc3, i think thats the issue with the 2 port charger

True, the one with one port works fine

Car charger, can you use a motorola car charger?

Do you have to buy the car charger from HTC or can you use let's say a Motorola car charger that also uses mini USB? Like the razor
Motorola car charger will most likely fry your Trinity. I believe it outputs more power than the Trinity can handle. Do yourself a favour and pick up a USB Car Charger that outputs the suggested 5v 1A.

My Motorola Car charger works for my trinity and my universal as well since monthes without any trouble...
Mine Orange SPV M700 (UK) came with screenholder and in-car charger so I don't have that problem.
I accidentally plugged my Trinity into my girlfriends RAZR charger and it get very, very hot. I don't know how good that can really be.

Use this to see how hot the battery is getting and compare it to charging with the normal charger to see if there is any damage being done.
Hi,mini usb has the same voltage ( current is sometimes different ) concerning all the accessories of various brand of mobile.

They all get hot charging.
AFAIK any mini-USB physical connector will be the same electrically, ie 5v 1a, therefore they should (in theory at least) all work OK.

Usual Car charger vs. USB Car Charger

It is not a secret, that charging over data cable is slower, rather than over electrical plug. I think it is due to USB max current is 500mAh, while my direct charger output in 1000 mAh.
I wondering if the same is relevant to car chargers. I'm having the one of so-called USB Car Chargers, which has the USB plug as output, than you connect it to your phone thru the data cable.
If I buy a usual mini-usb car charger, would I get any benefits in charging speed?
Thanks.
usb max current is 500ma on the spec, you can draw much more than that over the copper.. as long as it's not being regulated by "compliant" circuitry/drivers, you should be able to draw 1000ma
Ive been looking into this tonight, and I checked my GF's iPhone wall charger (which is basically a wall USB charger) and it outputs 1000ma as well, and ive found a few usb car chargers putting out 700, 800, and even over 1000ma... only problem i have is i need it to be compact... i currently have a 500ma one in the car but that didnt seem to really charge the phone...

The reason I am asking is similar:
When I am driving with gps and 3G turned on my phone is never fully charged. In fact, it seems it even uncharging a bit. I am wondering if the same happening with usual mini-usb car charger.
And if I want to buy new on ebay, they never specify the mAh parameter.
I bought a 1000mAh USB car charger for a couple bucks at monoprice.com.

Overheating
im using an old S2 charger i think, its got an output of 5V, 0.7 amps and after flashing a costom rom, jellyfirebean im getting serious overheating issues, but only while charging with the phone on.
however i cant confirm this is the chargers problem yet
just a note, its the phone that heats up not the charger

Double that. Overheating can be only caused by the phone itself, or a defected battery (means it is near death, but for serius heating, you will notice like 1hrs of battery life for the phone).
On another note for the topic. I use 3 type of chargers for my phones:
At home my ASUS tab's one (which is rated 5V 1A at the standard USB, plus the extra for the dock, but it is ASUS specific), at work an old ZTE "dumbphone" charger (which is rated 5V 0.75A, and is a high frequency switching type, so really energy-efficient) and for any other my old SE X8's one, which is 5V 650mA (which is also switching type). Also dedicated charger cables, 1 nokia, 1 SE, 1 HTC and 1 ZTE at my car.
The phone's original 5V 1A is NRFB at the box of the phone, but I have a security backup Samsung charger (rated 5V 500mA and pass-trough type, so not really efficient, but stable) which works just fine. The S is not capable (or not enabled just yet) of fast charge mode AFAIK so no really chance for 500mA or more when charging (even when GPS and 3G on, and screen on max, which is aroung 430mA when I last measued it with a service cable).
reporting back
yeah i can confirm it was the 2 year old htc battery
i am now using 2 anker 1600mah batterys and they last a LOT longer + come with an enternal charger so i always have one charged, it also charges the old htc battery too externally so i can now use 3 battieries mwahahahaa
note i did have to delete battery stats in cwm to recalibrate

Car charger for Samsung Galaxy S4

Has anyone managed to get a car charger for this phone?
I've just tried to charge the phone with my car charger modded to "AC" mode by shorting the middle pins... and the S4 gets nada...
Have they changed the charging mechanics?
Is that what's going on? I was wondering what the heck was wrong with my charger!
Yup, the car charger still charges my old HTC, even with the Samsung cable... so there's definitely something different inside the charger...
I have a 2A usb car charger with generic cable to charge my devices. It's nothing special, but it works with my S4. Hope that helps.

Hmmm will have to look into getting a decent 2A charger then and NOT modifying it...
So I opened up my car charger and un-modded it back to original and it works like a charm now
I've got a 1A Belkin car charger and it seems to overload after a while when charging my gs4.
The green light on it blinks and my phone makes that sound when you plug in the charger.
Takes a while for it to happen but gets more frequent the longer you have it plugged in.
The charger works fine with my gf's nexus 4.

I'm using the Motorola charger (big blue circle). Got it for my Razr Maxx a year or so ago (I've gone through like 4 phones since then) and it works wonderfully. It's the best micro-USB car charger I've ever seen. Coiled cord, huge blue light (but not too bright since it's an ambient-style light), and charges quickly.

Seriously, the best car charger I've ever owned. 950mA is also one of the highest car chargers I've used.

Different USB cables do pass different current even if using the same charging main. From tests I've done so far, a generic 3 ft USB 2.0 cable I randomly purchased online only allowed around 400 mA. An old Blackberry Torch 9810 cable allowed around 1200 mA. Original cable that came with the S4 allows 1900 mA. These numbers are from using the original wall charger main that came with phone.

Extra Chargers?

Has anyone found any cheap chargers that can charge this phone like the Essential charger does (really fast)? I have bought two different chargers and neither of them can really even charge the phone. The lock screen says it's charging slowly, and the battery meter acts like it's charging, but it doesn't actually charge. The chargers were both Quick Charge 3.0 chargers too. None of my old phone chargers with a type-c adapter will charge the phone either.

No idea. Honestly, I don't know of anyone who consciously needs to control the speed of their charge. I avoid charging overnight by rapid charging during the day at work.
does it really need PD? they are kind of expensive and there are chargers out there with 5V, 6V, 9V, 12V @ 3A

I'm not sure how Android is programmed to display "Rapidly Charging", but I'm sure it's not by charging standard. Probably based on supplied power, but it definitely doesn't charge as fast as the stock charger. I noticed this with my QC chargers. It will say rapidly charging for a couple minutes and then just not charge at all or say charging slowly. Frustrating as hell so I bought an extra USB PD charger.
My Samsung chargers all work, and charge the phone to 100%. They just say charging, not quick charging, but whatever... The % goes up.

Yeah...it doesn't. I'm such a tool I assumed it did and bought two Ankar QC3 wall chargers and a Tronsmart QC3 car charger. None of them are able to charge the phone at all, says that it's charging slowly but doesn't seem as though it's charging at all.

Phone needs a charger with USB-C Power Delivery and not QC. Anker has at least one model and Incipio has one as well. There are many others on Amazon.. The cool thing about those is that they also change my XPS-13. Only carry one charger when I travel.
I've got a few QC 2/3 chargers and a few USB-C PD chargers and what I've found is that depending on which USB-C to USB-A makes a difference whether I get rapid charge or not.
I'm slowly converting over to USB-C to USB-C but it is stupid expensive for some things like the power packs with USB-C...
Anyway, try a few different cables and see if it works for you, also it seems to work a tiny bit better on the Oreo Beta however my QC 2.0 car charger doesn't charge as fast as it did on 7.1.1 but luckily the car chargers are the cheapest USB-C PD items to buy, roughly about the same price as a cable.
One last note, the same charger and cable don't always go into rapid charging mode so replugging the cable in sometime kicks in rapid mode for me.

Haven't tried it, but something like this with USB PD sounds like it would be good - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Charger-Delivery-Output-Adaptor-Samsung/dp/B01M2BLLVN/
I had my phone plugged into a regular USB jack on a car this weekend and the battery didn't charge at all
Alas, not available in the US...
