S8+: MicroSD slot is UHS-I or UHS-II "bus"? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

For the S8+:
is there a way to find out if this phone has a MicroSD card slot that uses UHS-I or UHS-II "bus"? I can't seem to find this information anywhere.
UHS-I = single row of contacts (slower max speed); UHS-II = two rows of contacts (faster max speed)
Kindly please note that this is NOT the UHS3 (the number 3 inside a letter U). this UHS-I or UHS-II has to do with the "bus" that is reading the micro sd card and also the micro sd card itself: the UHS-I cards have only one row of contacts, while the UHS-II cards have two rows for much higher read/write speeds.
No where was i able to find this information!
I even contacted @SamsungSupportUSA and their answer was that they don't know and don't have that info and told me to keep checking on their website! Such lazy folks over there - no effort at all in even trying to find out this info.
Thanks in advance.

Im also curious

If you're reading this, you're also absolutely shocked that nobody knows if this phone supports UHS-II. I've been searching for a month, talked to Samsung.... and nobody knows.
The best discussion I found is from this photographer's blog. Scroll down to the very bottom where there is active discussion about real testing.

It would seem from fin-t's results that it is now UHS II or III compliant if hesonly got 60mb from it. I get about the same speeds as that on my 'up to 95mb' UHS-I sandisk.
His internal speeds look low though, i get 580mb read and 217 write

I couldn't get a straight answer on this from anybody, so I just bit the bullet and grabbed the Immersive package from Sammy with the UHS-I U3 card for $100 with the GearVR and AKG on-ears. I'm sure that'll be good enough.

UHS-I
S8/S8+ only supports UHS-I, Exynos 8895 and Snapdragon 835 only supports SD 3.0 which is UHS-I.
You can check the individual links for Exynos 8895 and Snapdragon 835 for the actual specs.

What ever happened to UFS cards?
They were meant to replace SD cards in every way.. :/

Not to hijack your thread OP, but Best Buy has a class 10 SanDisk 32gb for $32.99. The link you posted lists a class 1 sd card.
I was under the impression that UHS1= Class 10? Either way, for what I need this is a steal. Thanks OP!

I stand corrected, I jumped the gun and overlooked the UHS, I did a quick wiki and this is the word...
UHS Speed Class [edit]
UHS-I symbolThe Ultra-High Speed (UHS) designation is available on some SDHC and SDXC cards.[44] The following ultra-high speeds are specified:
UHS-I cards, specified in SD Version 3.01,[41] support a clock frequency of 100 MHz (a quadrupling of the original "Default Speed"), which in four-bit transfer mode could transfer 50 MB/s. UHS-I cards declared as UHS104 also support a clock frequency of 208 MHz, which could transfer 104 MB/s. UHS-I is the only class for which products are currently available.[45]
Double data rate operation at 50 MHz (DDR50) is also specified in Version 3.01, and is mandatory for microSDHC and microSDXC cards labeled as UHS-I. In this mode, four bits are transferred when the clock signal rises and another four bits when it falls, transferring an entire byte on each full clock cycle.
UHS-II cards, defined in Version 4.0, further raise the data transfer rate to a theoretical maximum of 312 MB/s.[46][47]
UHS memory cards work best with UHS host devices. The combination lets the user record HD resolution videos with tapeless camcorders while performing other functions. It is also suitable for real-time broadcasts and capturing large HD videos.
Cards that comply with UHS show UHS-I or UHS-II on the label, and report this capability to the host device. Use of UHS requires that the host device command the card to drop from 3.3-volt to 1.8-volt operation and select the 4-bit transfer mode.

For future use. Card class is noted on the card itself as well on most cards. You should see a circle with a number in it.
From the picture on the New Egg listing that would mean that this card is a class 10. A lot of the cheaper cards are usually class 4 or below.

Which microSD card for Honor 6?

Hello,
I apologize if this question has already been made but I have a little concerns regarding this matter.
I recently bought the Honor 6 online and I'll receive it soon. I'd like some advice for buying a microSD card that meets my needs.
I'd like to buy a 64gb card that is fast enough (mainly for music and also apps), so I'd avoid cheap cards (unless you assure they're more than ok).
I've made some researches and I'm a bit confused about few points.
What do I really need to check in a card? Is it true that for mobiles the most important thing to see in a sd card are the random Read/Write (512K) speeds? Or else I need to check its sequential speed?
According to a lot of speed tests, SanDisk Extreme Pro is one of the fastest sd cards out there but I also read that SanDisk cards have a quite high failure rate after few months of use (true or not?). Being expensive I've no idea if it would be worth or not.
There are also Samsung Pro+, Transcend 633x, Lexar 1033x etc.. They are quite expensive in Europe and I've totally no idea if my future Honor 6 will be able to benefit to all their fast speed.
I've read this review http://www.anandtech.com/show/8425/huawei-honor-6-review/9 and I'm a bit concerned what the reviewer wrote about the Honor 6, I quote the exact text:
"The Honor 6 offers also a microSD card slot in case you want to expand your storage. The OS offers full exFat compatibility and I had no issues with my Samsung Pro 64GB card. I was however disappointed to see that the HiSilicon chip suffers from the same limitation that plagues other SoCs for no good reason: the DWMMC controller in charge of the SD-card is limited to SDR50 speeds, meaning that you won't be able to exceed ~35mB/s transfer speeds on your microSD, no matter how fast it actually is. It still baffles me that OEMs refuse to address this even almost 2 years after the first UHS-1 cards have been made widely available. "
Is this actually true?
Which microSD you recommend me?

Clearly UHS-1 card is the best balance between performance and cost. According to your research.

Samsung support is pathetic they cant even tell me what bands the different phones support.
I tried one more time to try to contact @SamsungSupportUSA and see if I might get a 2nd person who's a bit more proactive.
No go. Just the same lazy answer: keep your eyes on our website and when we have new information, we'll put it up on samsung.com.
oh yeah? really?
pathetic.
This is what their 2nd reply was:
"It is a valid point, and we understand why that information would be helpful. Unfortunately, at this time I have to reiterate that we do not have that information currently available. Please keep an eye on the s8 and s8+ on http://samsung.com , or check back with us on this channel.Let us know if there's anything else you'd like us to help you with, as we are available 24/7."
Well, too bad:
it has the UHS-I "bus" merely, despite the fact that UHS-II are out and UHS-II cards are widely available.
oh well!
UHS-II card speeds / bus speeds are SO much faster!
S8/S8+ only supports UHS-I, Exynos 8895 and Snapdragon 835 only supports SD 3.0 which is UHS-I.
You can check the individual links for Exynos 8895 and Snapdragon 835 for the actual specs.

Which max SD card speed is supported by XZP?

Dear forum,
I want to know if XZP is able to support UHS-II speeds for the SD card. I'm thinking in acquire this one Samsung 64Gb but it's just UHS-I. This will be OK to save 4k video without problems?
I don't want to buy a UHS-II card (which are notabily more expensive) if the phone only supports UHS-I speeds...
Thank you! Regards!
The phone supports only UHS-I speeds, and it will never support UHS-II. You can still buy an UHS-II card if you want, since they are backwards compatible, but you will be capped at the UHS-I speeds. No phone and phone chipset have implemented UHS-II support yet.
Where did you learn about the UHS-I?

How did you learn that it only supports UHS-I? I can't find any information other than "SDXC supported". So, in theory it can hold up to 2TB, but where did you learn about the UHS-1?
I've found this thread a little bit late, but for all followed user: The Generation 2 need a second raw of contacts. If the phone has only one raw, it could not support Gen. 2
Not sure, but I have one wich writes up to 90MB/s and reads up to 100MBs (Samsung EVO Plus U3 SDXC I 256GB) (tested in PC) and from SD to internal (reading) I've seen 80MB/s and from internal to SD (writing) most times is about 50MB/s but sometimes it gets higher, not sure if its a limitation or just the pone was busy and the reading speed from internal was slower than it can be
Anyway I doubt it gets much faster with better SD, and that one is actually cheap comparing with others
work with v30 for 4k
UHS Speed Class 1 designates the performance option designed to support real-time video recording with a UHS-enabled host device. UHS Speed Class 3 designates the performance option designed to support real-time video recording with a UHS-enabled host device.
go here https://www.sandisk.com/about/legal/hd
@prodigalgypsy https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon-835-mobile-platform
As you can see in the spec sheet, the 835 mobile platform supports .
UFS: UFS2.1 Gear3 2L
SD: SD 3.0 (UHS-I)
So UHS-I speeds are the highest you can get.

Micro SD card with Note 20 Ultra

I haven't had an android phone with an SD card since the OG Moto G days and I have heard every now and then that the way they're handled has changed?
Will the Galaxy Note 20 still keep the SD card and the internal storage separate and use the SD card for media, or does it combine the two in to a larger storage area?

It is separate. Like having an extra HardDrive on your computer. You can store media files on either or both of them.

It can't merge the two since it uses different technology.
Internal storage is way faster than an SD card.
The two are separated.
"way faster" ..
the SD storage is "way fast" enough for many things you plan to do with the phone. get a fast high speed card (i picked up the 1TB sandisk) .
burst mode on the camera will be forced to internal storage (user cant change that) . i did some early tests yesterday with the phone's video camera in different formats and aspect ratios and the card handled the throughput nicely.
but for installing application, I would prefer on internal storage rather than SD card even with an A2 rated card.
Yes because the constant IO and polling the card consume the battery faster
Plus, there's no security and encrypting / decrypting make it longer.

THANKS,
If you want best speed performance go with the A2 rated Sandisk Extreme or Extreme Pro. They are expensive of course. For my day to day use I just settled with Samsung EVO Plus microSD. Does the job competently at budget friendly price.

I just bought Kingston 'Canvas Go! Plus' 256GB card, also rated as A2 and I have found a few benchmarks showing it is a bit faster than the Sandisk Extreme Pro at a cheaper price . I have my doubt too but gonna try it when the card arrived. The Kingston card has a lifetime warranty, will see how it performs. I am very curious too. Here is one of the reviews I saw: https://pokde.net/system/pc/storage/kingston-canvas-go-plus-microsd-review/

Let me know about that Kingston card once you get it. Run some benchmarks on it.
I literally just ordered the Sandisk 256GB 15 minutes ago on Amazon for $48. The Kingston is $49. The Sandisk is rated 160MB Read and 90MB write. The Kingston is 170MB read and 90MB write. I checked out that review you posted and seems like a great card. I'm thinking about cancelling my order and getting the Kingston card instead.

From my research the Note 20Ultra doesn't support the higher end micro SDcards anyway. I can't remember the technology names (the different classes of Micro SD cards) but I did some research on what SDcard to get and the super fast micro SD's are useless in the Note20 since it doesn't have the proper tech to support the higher speeds. I wish I could remember how to explain it technically, but I can't remember the terms to use.

In my country the price differ quite a lot so I get the Kingston. Definitely gonna try it esp. on random read and write. You mean UHS-I and UHS-II right? Agree with your point, Note 20 Ultra does not have UHS-II capability, so focusing on random read and write is more logical.

Yes, UHS I vs UHS II. I'm no expert on SDcards. I did do my research though and found out that the super high-end Micro SD's will not reach their full potential on the Note 20 Ultra. I was trying to find out which one to buy to give me the fastest performance.
I just went to amazon and cancelled my order for the Sandisk and was going to order the Kingston. But I got to checkout and the Kingston wouldn't get here until September 24th! So I ordered the Sandisk again since it will be here on the 2nd
I'd still like to know how that Kingston performs for you. I'm going to run some benchmarks on my Sandisk as well. We could make a thread about it to help other XDA users decide which to get.

Yup, we can compare the performance between these 2 cards. Besides speed, another thing to take into consideration is reliability. My previous S7 Edge is running Samsung Evo card and works reliably for almost 5 years now, although it is slow. This Kingston 'Plus' card is newer version of Canvas! Go, so not sure about the reliability. Sandisk Extreme Pro maybe a more reliable card.
For benchmark, not sure which app to test on phone instead on PC. I have 'Anvil’s Storage Utilities' result for the Sandisk card (128GB) tested by myself and comparing the benchmark results with that review link, Kingston actually surpass Sandisk by a bit. Probably can't feel it in real world use XD.
Btw, I have the Exynos version of Note 20 Ultra. Sadly my courier is taking way too long to deliver my card, bought my Kingston on 17th Aug actually

I have received my Kingston card and tested it. Using my office PC (WD Blue 1TB SSD) and same card reader (Ugreen brand) for both cards.
Anvil's Storage Utilities benchmark results:
Kingston Canvas Go! Plus (256GB): https://imgur.com/FmSsoX0
Sandisk Extreme Pro (UHS-I) (128GB): https://imgur.com/wZ68Ian

Kingston Canvas Go! Plus (256GB): https://imgur.com/l9u1POG
Sandisk Extreme Pro (UHS-I) (128GB): https://imgur.com/QqGNNAE
From the benchmark, Kingston win over Sandisk on almost all criteria but keep in mind that I only tested on 128GB Sandisk card.
Doing a file transfer (Windows 10 ISO file) the speed for Kingston is around 80MB/s while the Sandisk is 75MB/s. I am happy with my purchase Now on my Note 20 Ultra, I have encrypted it but not sure whether it will have an impact on the performance, my guess is it will.

I have edited my reply just now, add in Crystaldiskmark results. I guess there is no significant difference between these 2 cards. Both of them are better than Samsung's Evo XD. Probably best cards for our Note 20 for now.
