S8 Battery Life - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

The only thing stopping me getting the S8 is potential poor battery life. Since it's the same size as the S7 Edge I would have expected it to have similar battery performance, but looking at the projections it seems the S8 doesn't hold a candle.
The S8+ is too big for me so not an option.

I think they should be on par, around the same SOT. The regular S8 is the new S7 and the S8+ is the new Edge when you think about it. So you should compare the S7 with the S8. Time will tell.

That was my worry too but I asked at the new york event and they told me the system has been optimized for it and does not huge a lot of battery as before. the lady had it for a week before the presentation and told me she saw the difference, let's see now...

Came across this online which might give some idea on how battery will perform. Of course some people will have lower or higher SOT. But if you ask me that's 5+ SOT is not bad at all.

That's about on par with the S7 then. Pretty much the expected SOT for normal usage with Samsung phones. It's the average these days and it's good enough. They have a less power hungry SoC but a bigger brighter screen so it evens things out. Good to know, thanks.

I think since Samsung put such a big battery in the S7 Edge, people are expecting them to do even better every year. I certainly am. If you think about it, the S8+ has a 6.2" display - that's massive compared to the 5.5" display of the S7 Edge. Yet they've put a smaller battery in. I know they say the cpu gets more efficient every year but I can't see it making that much of a difference to offset the smaller battery compared to the bigger display.
I'm yet to be proven wrong though. I must say I'm still very happy with my S7 Edge and although I'm itching to get the S8, I might just hang on for the time being.

Idk what but I am getting frustrated by this SOT, I find this battery performance unacceptable by today's standards. I hope company would focus less in gimmicks and more on battery optimization, technologies.

Really hoping for S8+ battery life being good.

It is frustrating, the battery often gets overlooked. Although the images and previews I have seen so far suggest the battery life is pretty much the same, it was never that great to begin with. It is the average for high end phones. Instead of the ongoing trend to have super slim devices, I would much prefer a little more thickness to host a larger capacity battery.
It has apparently improved in one big way though, Samsung say it will hold charge better over time. 5% diminished in a year rather than the 20-30% in previous batteries.

Coming from the LG V20, I'm sure I won't be disappointed with the S8+'s battery life.

It will be alright, more is always better though. Especially for things like VR, movies and games. I'll be happy enough and at least it charges quickly.

Considering my S6 has kinda crappy battery life, virtually anything else will be an upgrade from that, haha. But, I do hope the battery life is actually good, despite the larger screen and same size battery as last year's S7.

Same here. The V20 stand-by life is excellent. But the onscreen life is subpar.

Im pretty disappoinited as well especially after my s7e got updated to N. I only want the s8 as it compares to my s7e which i find to be the perfect size. Smaller battery with bigger screen. Thats what they did with the s6e and the battery was sht

I completely agree.
I really don't understand this desperate need for thinner phones. I find that the thinner they are, the less comfortable they are to hold and use. When I go back and hold an older phone that is significantly thicker, it actually feels better in the hand, not worse. Easier to grip and manipulate with one hand and I feel like I am less likely to accidentally drop it.
The only dimension that needs to remain small enough is the side-to-side width. They've done a great job with that on the S8/S8+. Now if they would make the phone 2-3mm thicker and the same width, I wager that it would not only be more comfortable to hold, but it would probably accommodate 4500mAh or more for battery size.

The problem is they seem to think that since the New 10nm is more efficient sticking the same or lesser battery capacity will yield a similar battery life. They dont let the users benefit from hving lower battery consumption chips

Well, they are not stupid. They make their statistics assessment to figure out what is more attractive, the screen or more battery. Looks like many people prefer "fancy" screen.

If I remember correctly the fiery Note 7 had the same size battery as the S7 edge or it might have been 100mah less and it had better sot than the S7 edge

I'm hoping it will match or surpass my iPhone 6s+ which has been excellent but like having handcuffs on for 1.5 years now..

Saw a video that showed a predicted battery life time of 45 hours without power saving on. If true that means i can finally do a day without charging my phone when my S8 arrives.

Why don't manufacturers just put a 3000mah+ battery in their phones, stock?

After seeing the Epic 4G (I bought one with a broken ESN and shipped it to Canada), and several of other Galaxy S phones, I noted something. They were pretty lightweight, but battery life was unimpressive.
The Epic is not alone, and there are lots of Android phones that seem to suffer from poor battery life. The Evo was also notorious for bad battery life, as is the newer Desire HD. It begs the question - why don't manufacturers add a bigger battery stock? It would be an enormous selling point, battery life that rivals Blackberry or low-end Symbian phones. Plus, with the new "thin" and "lightweight" trend going on, there is room to add more batteries.
Price certainly isn't an issue; these are flagships going for like $500-$600; what's the extra $20 for a bigger battery? I'm pretty sure that customers would be willing to pay that to double their battery life. So why don't they? They know quite well that customers complain about it.
I agree wholeheartedly.
I mean, Samsung in particular has no problem doing this - their Super AMOLED devices are extremely thin and light for their screensize. They could easily make it ~2 inches thicker and ~30 grams heavier and stick a 2600-3000 mAh battery in there. It would also offset the "cheap build quality" feeling that some users get when they grasp a very light phone made of plastic.
there is no one size fit's all solution to this.
some people like the thinness and can work around the potential battery life issues. and unless you're really hammering the phone most of them will last an entire day.
for everyone else they can offer a thicker battery and cover.

you didnt really think that through before you pressed 'post' did you? nobody here would be into a 2" thick phone.
The point remains that with a day's worth of heavy usage, these newer phones just can't handle it.

My Vibrant does just fine handling it.
I agree with you sauron! Every phone should have at least 2000 mAh battery. That would be only 1 or 2 mm more thickness of the whole phone, but much more usable. Today's smartphones die to quickly. My nokia E72 manages two days of some extreme usage, i wish I could say the same for some of the 3,7 inch smartphones..
Phones don't include 3000mah+ batteries to cut down on weight and thickness. I do find it weird that larger screen phones (HD2, HD7, Evo) have a smaller battery than phones with smaller screens like the Droid Incredible and HTC Hero.

Only with moderate use.
The point is that we shouldn't have to resort to custom kernels, cutting services like GPS to get one day's battery. This would not require a lot of change - just a slightly bigger phone. I'd pay a bit extra willingly for, say double battery life.

yup more battery life is always good and getting some extra thickness and weight for improved battery is not a bad trade-off...
I've never had any battery problems with my EVO.

Personally my backflip (running 2.1 update 1), wifi on half the day and moderate it lasts a full day, if that. I would certainly sacrifice "2mm" thickness for double the battery, if it were that little of a difference... The backflip is already a thick phone due to its doubled over design but I wouldn't mind a little thicker, usually, for that added battery life.

[DISCUSSION] Battery / Phone size

Today's trend for mobile phones is as thinner, lighter as better. But in the other hand, CPU is getting more powerful and more power consuming so I would like to open a discussion I've been thinking for a longer time now. Also phone screens are getting bigger and bigger which is hell of a battery drain too. I currently use Galaxy S and Galaxy S III. Both phones can keep up with screens on up to 6-7 hours set up with about 20% of brigthness in cost of smaller dimensions. When I put masks on both phones, in dimensions it gets thicker for about 3-4 mm, but also it suits much better in my hand and it's much more comfortable. I won't discuss battery length and height because I actually don't know how much space is there left in whole phone, but if you are familiar with it, feel free to bring it up.
For me it would be better if they added at least 2-3 mm more thicker to get more battery capacity (I think they could reach at least 700 mAh more with 3-4mm more in thickness).
What about you? what is your opinion?

I have the same opinion.
Perhaps a new trend will start with the Lenovo P770. It has huge battery, 3500 mAh.
Ya that's what my idea too? RAM and processer are becoming more important.

mi 2 is cool
since screens are getting bigger these days it means that batteries have grown wider/longer but not thicker. problem is that the bigger the screen, the more battery power is needed.
I think the s3 is a little too thin maybe j agrees with OP a few millimeters extra never hurt and if would improve battery life though I never had a problem with battery 40% battery life lasted me 4 hours with moderate usage

I've always liked the protective-case/extended-battery combo that you can get for iPhone 4. They have it on Woot all the time.
It makes your phone 1/2" longer because the extended battery is built into the case.
If they made one for my phone (S3) I'd consider it. The S3 has it's microUSB jack on the bottom so it could work. As long as USB sync to PC could pass through this would be the optimum solution in my opinion.
got a 4500Mah battery for S3, don't mind the size increase better if you got bigger hand's... more to hold onto, the only situation where bigger is better lol.
I'm a big fan of choice. The way the S3 works with the replaceable battery, you can get an extended battery and new back to house it - no need to have a longer phone with battery connected by micro-usb.
The micro-usb work-around is for phones whose batteries are built-in and not easily replaceable/accessible.
I'm not sure about the idea of the battery taking up the whole back of the phone, I'd wonder how that would impact balance of the device. I think it's good how it is now with the weight in the lower-bottom area of the phone.
Choice, being able to find what suits for an individual. Personally, I'm happy with my phone being as "small" as it is and the battery almost always lasts through the day with how I use it - and since the battery is replaceable, I don't have to worry about babying it.
I prefer powerful battery
i really don't mind to have a little bit heavier phone for 2-3 hours
I think a heavier phone feels like it has a better build quality than these very thin plastic phones . Also a slightly thicker phone easier to hold tight in my opinion!
if we can solve the battery problem, everything will be better.

Is it still worth buying a S6 in 2017 ?

So I want to get a new phone, and I was thinking of getting the S6 by the way my budget looks like at the moment since I am thinking a new phone in the price range I have in mine won't offer anything up to that. I want to mention that I am not a heavy user, but I do want a phone with a good camera, audio and display quality.
Also I won't look at buying a new one, but a second hand one.
Hi !
What's your price range ?
The S6 is really a good device and have indeed a good camera, audio and display quality but the bad point is battery life.
With 2550mah I can get only 1 full day with 3hours of screen on. I have changed my battery since a few month now.
Getting a second hand S6 will expose you to the risk of getting even worst battery life.
Only problem is battery...
Imho phone without 3k+ mah battery isnt enough no matter heavy user or not...
All the rest s6 is more the enough
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Now that's some good advice above!
Like mentioned above, you'll probably have to replace the battery if it's a second hand though
It is still a very, very good phone but you may have to invest in a external battery if you are away from a mains power source for quite a while

If that is the case, it's a great phone! The Exynos 7420 is plenty fast, as it was truly ahead of its time. Battery life is decent. Screen is great.
for the given price and the amount of roms available not at all(and battery is like ****)... i made a foolish decision by buying this phone in 2016 when one plus 3 was available at a cheaper price... don't but this phone now.
I think if you can pick up an s6 for between 200-250 pounds, that's a good deal. It has a decent soc, screen and camera, yes battery could be better but that comes down to your usage and at some point depending on how old the handset is you might want to have the battery replaced. If you really value battery life then there are probably better devices but you will give up screen/cpu/ camera quality.
this year a lot middle range phones comes wit sd625 chip, which has +- performance like s6 Exynos. new sd 625 brand phones (if not Chinese brands) are expensive or same price like s6, but without super camera or screen like s6, wireless charger and etc. One bad thing with s6 - battery. I better buy 2 year old new s6 than mid class than mid class this year phone.

You can go for the S6 then !
You may have to replace the battery or buy a powerbank which is QC 2.0 compatible for best charging speed.
Like it has been said above, mid range phones will fail in the camera part and in the material used to build the device.
The only good point would be that mid range 2017 will get longer support than the S6 which is almost 2 years old now.
Anyway, Samsung updated the S6 to Nougat which is a really good news and the experience is even better than it was before.
You can also enjoy pretty neat features that you won't find on other mid range phones like the wireless charging, the led notification (not present in mid range samsung) or again the amazing camera
S6 is still a very good device. The camera is still one of the bests, the processor is fast enough, the display is magnificent. The battery is the only big disadvantage.
my s6 is 2years old and im still using it now, very good camera, very good display, still fast and smooth only downsidr is battery so i have a powerkbank when im outside
in my opinion it is worth to buy s6 until now
Just make sure the device has had the battery replaced as the original one will have degraded quite a bit in the last two years.
you better buy oneplus because even if you buy s8 its not worht it because you dont get support so wait for the one plus 5 with 8 gb ram, dual camera, fingerprint on the back, 5.5 inch amoled qhd display, oneplus logo with backlight you can use it as home button, and snapdragon 835 clocked at 2.45.
and its gonna kick the s8 of its thrones
Hey Raulz0r!
I own a Galaxy S6, and I have to say, it's an amazing phone camera/performance/display wise. The downside is the battery, but in my daily use, that only happens when I'm on 3G/4G data as it really drains the battery out so that's why I bought a 10000mah portable charger/power bank and now my phone's battery life doesn't bother me that much anymore. But if you're not into the habit of carrying a portable charger around, well, that will be a problem.
Cheers
If I had the opportunity I would definitely buy S8 or S8+. It is great if you are coming from old model phone also.
I bought S6 in january 2017 and I will pay for it around 240eur in total. Its on contract for 2years and costs Me 9,94eur a month. This purchase was spontan as My old phone (LG G3) contract was almost over and I kinda wanted a new phone. LG G3 still works ok and I willing to sell it. My toughts about tgis phone right now - somewhere in middle. Biggest issue I have is whit touchscreen. I don't know it is Me or what but response can be sometimes too sensitive and not responding compleately outside in winter. This is a major issue for Me as G3 was working as expected. I must use correction on S6 all the time. Screen - I haven't bin a fan of super amoleds and I'm still not. Colors are too saturated and from some angles it looks ****ty and cheep. On highest brigtness it looks also bad. Vibration - on hard surface it makes a lit of sound, and again - it makes phone look like entry-level. Battery - small, but I use phone onky up to 3h sot and I charge evety night. It isn't an issue for Me. Phone look and feel in hands - it is slippery, but I like alunium bezzels and thickness. Sound is good on speaker and headphones. Processing power is ok for Me. I'm not a heavy user as I mentioned. FB usage only in web broweser, so is Instagram. Camera is ok for phone, but don't expect dsrl quality for now on any phone. Heartrate sensor is a toy to play whit, but can be quite inaccurate, but I like Samsung Health app and GPS performance. GPS was a very noticable improvements over G3.
Overall for 240eur I'm not complaining, but if I would pay 300, 400 eur I would take it back. Biggest complain would be about touchscreen performance. If You spotted typo mistakes it because of that.

S20 FE thoughts coming from a S9+

Thought this might be useful for my S9 brothers considering an upgrade.
Bottom Line: Not worth the upgrade unless your battery life is bad..
I absolutely loved my S9+, by far the best Android phone I ever had but the battery was bad from the beginning and had gotten extremely bad lately. In the beginning I could get 3.5-4 hours SOT and now its under 3 and had to recharge multiple times a day.
I got a great deal on trading in my S9+ for the S20 FE , and while I like the phone, I miss the S9+.
Battery Life: Much better, getting about 5-6 hours SOT which is a big plus for me compared to <3 on the S9+. Stand by seems to be better too.
Display: Similar but you can tell the display is inferior. Bigger bezels and I miss the curved screen of the S9+, easier to use the gestures. There is also a red tint on the phones when looking at it on an angle (especially on a white screen) which I find annoying and I might exchange for another.
120hz screen is nicer scrolling but not as life changing as I thought.
Design: Plastic back is not as premium but not that big of a deal. The phone is a tad bigger which is a bit harder to use.
Performance: Feels a bit faster but the 6 GB of Ram sucks. You can see it reload apps and chug when switching apps sometimes.
Other things: Vibration motor is a bit worse, Speakers are similar or better on the S20 FE. No notification Light. Fingerprint sensor is decent.
Ultimately not as a big of an upgrade as I was hoping, next time I will get the S21 Flagship as I miss the curved screen, nicer display, and better vibration a lot of the top of the line Galaxy. Its small improvements but definitely noticeable
Hope this helps and let me know if you have questions.

I could get my S20+ at approx. 450 USD here in India, post trading my S9+.
Battery Life: Much better, getting about 5-6 hours SOT which is a big plus for me compared to <3 on the S9+. Stand by is way better.
Display: Bigger Display with 120hz screen is nicer scrolling but not as life changing as I agree with op here only on the 120hz part ?. However, with the help of mods here @xda I’ve limited the display to 90Hz, must see how much the difference is on 120 vs 90..
Design: No Plastic or Glasstic ? pun intended, bigger than my S9+ and getting used to it.
Performance: Feels way faster but gets hot sometimes due to the Exynos version we get.. btw I did postpone my purchase till today only coz I wanted an SD Version from anywhere else and I ended up taking the same.. that’s me being me… ?
Other things: Speakers are way better than S9+. No notification Light & Fingerprint sensor is decent.
I don’t know yet whether this is an upgrade I needed at the most, but the offer price actually pushed me to take the decision to go for S20+ instead FE and also I didn’t wanted to switch to any other suppliers..
Bottom Line: Worth the upgrade and should definitely go for it unless you need an Ultra version..

Yes you're definitely correct that the s9+ battery is really sucks and I'm charging almost 3 times a day which is my only issue so far. I'm currently buying the FE because it was sale right now, from $700 to $550
Replaced the battery in my S9+ yesterday. Not willing to lose the headphone jack and my phone does everything I need it to. I've been able to get great battery the entire phones life but I have always been on really debloated roms with root/adblock/etc and minimal google apps installed.

SD here and very happy
Will be interested how this vote goes. I too am very happy with mine and so is my wife. In all the posts about being unhappy many are saying 30% of people are unhappy or have major issues. Really think that is a number pulled out of their ass. I do not think there are a lot of posts from individuals that are happy, they just read what is posted. So, the bad posts are skewed in numbers. Let's see how this goes.
yeah i myself am very happy, i have the 85% limit set on my battery, and do a lot of heavy usage and im very happy with mine, mine is exynos 512/12. im using httrack, and google and dropbox autosync pretty much 24 hours a day in the background while also video editing and i dont notice any lag at all
SD and a like from me (love is a strong word) only negative for me is the sharp corners and wider body compared to S21U though somehow S22U feels lighter maybe better weight distribution. Speed, fluidity and battery are great for me.
There have been many more exynon users that have been unhappy with performance, but a lot have 128 models. Also, since the latest firmware update, many of those are now happy with the performance. Just goes to show you.

no. think it is one of the worst devices Samsung has put out. terribly slow. bugs, bugs, bugs. overheating like crazy.
for , me, a waste of money. upgrade s21 ultra via samsung direct only thing i am fairly happy about is that I only lost $225 bux for the purchase.
this one has really changed my mind all together on samsung upgrades.
Just the box alone it arrived in screamed 'crap,' on hand.
just my opinion here
I really like mine.

I have the 256 version and I'm unhappy, especially with the battery life.
The lag was somehow solved after the latest April update, but the battery life is still awful...
so the consensus is, by, yes or no votes, that more than two thirds of people are happy with thier s22 ultra
I'm really liking my Galaxy S22 Ultra so far (coming from an iPhone 13 Pro). The only thing that bothers me is the mediocre battery life.
I have done everything to debloat and clean the device via ADB and I'm also using the Galaxy max Hz app to limit the screen refresh rate to 10Hz in certain situations.
Limiting background usage helps as well and I have turned off things like automatic synchronization in Gmail and other apps.
Now, the device consumes way less battery power when being used/ in standby and I am satisfied with the results.

At this point, it appears by the yes/no votes that 80%+ are happy with their S22 ultra. Not a huge sample size, however, I think for the most part that people perusing this forum are looking to fix/improve their S22u in some manner. Therefore, I think the real number of people happy is in the 90%+ range.
i also think a factor to consider is that computing power increases faster than battery technology and people are wanting better processors but also complaining when the battery used to power it isnt sufficient and samsung are having to battle battery power verses computing power , i remember back in the early days of android when devices limited camera and processing power to increase battery life, setting camera to like 90% and the cpu governor was ondemand/interactive, its gonna be better once we have some custom kernels and cpu/gpu overiding, i myself am willing to sacrifice battery life for computing power, i mean we all have power banks nowadays anyway
If this were a forum for a true Note phone, the percentages would be different. My vote was No, my previous device (Note 10+) was better.
