Hi Guys,
I'm a casual user and usually get 2 days out of my battery with roughly 1-2 hours of screen time. I manage my wifi/data and have, "battery saver," mode set in my location settings.
A few days ago, my battery was on 70% when I went to bed. I awoke in the middle of the day and realised that my alarm had not gone off. The phone had turned off and when I turned it on, the battery was down at 3% and Google Search had consumed the battery.
Having a look around to find any possible reason, I stubbled on the, "Location Reporting," settings which were both on. I've now turned these both off and my battery life seems to loose 25% per day rather than the usual 50% per day.
What are your experiences with Location Reporting Settings and Battery Life?
Thanks.
Edit: just done another cycle and I am certainly 10 to 20 better battery wise than with location reporting on.
I'd say no, as it doesn't affect me and I have mine on high accuracy. I am 100% stock (not even unlocked bootloader) and haven't changed any settings away from default in any app I have installed (which isn't many)
Mine has always been on high accuracy. I've used 18% of my battery in the last 10 hours. I would check your navigation isn't running.

I don't think OP is referring to the high accuracy setting, but the google location reporting menu below.
I have them both off from the beginning, frankly I don't know if it makes any impact to the batttery life.
I think it does make somewhat of a difference. If I turn it off I can squeeze out maybe 20-30mins of extra screen on time. Mind you, I am a heavy user and sometimes I run into deadspots so take that for what its worth.

That's correct :good:, I'm referring to the reporting menu below.
Ever since I updated to the latest google play services (4.5.1 I think) battery drain issued have been solved.

YES. I turned off both Location History and Location Reporting and my phone has way less wakelocks and battery usage. But just leave the regular location setting on High Accuracy...
Your phone will last forever!
I've run my phone with Location History and Reporting and Google Now on. What I noticed was many more wakelocks at the end of the day but with surprisingly little difference in actual battery usage. It has gotten much much better IME as far as actual battery toll.

I'm on 4.2.39. The play store is not asking me to update the services app so I presume I'm on the latest version?

That's weird I'm on 4.1.32 (just checked). Maybe try installing latest gapps package? I had problems with cataclysm ROM in December. Then a new play services update came out and no more wake locks.

Thanks for looking, I'm on stock 4.4.2. What prompted me to look at my settings was just the random chronic battery drain. Google keep saying they have fixed things and they appear to be right. Then out of nowhere, I get a random drain. It's happened 3 times now meaning I get to work hours late....
Google collects anonymous location data from your phone even when location reporting and history are turned off (also did it when on device only mode).
It caused a lot of wake locks for me. I've found a way to still be able to use the GPS without all the wake locks. Simply switch off location totally, then reenable but disagree to the Google terms. Phone sleeps all the time now.
However I'm not quite sure how much battery these wake locks consume and if it's worth losing the instant location access and Google Now features. That's why I'm running my phone this way for a couple of days to test the battery life both with ART and Dalvik to see, if it makes a difference and how big that difference is.
Btw, I also only have Play Services 4.1.32. Does that depend on which region we live in? I would also like to see, if 4.5 would make the battery life better...

Services went to 4.2.40 last night. I'm still going to run without the location reporting on to see if I can get longer than my usual 2 days.
Would be nice to get hear from another nexus 4/5 user who in the past has had location reporting on and has now turned it off.

Hm, I still have the same old version. Would it be dangerous to sideload an updated version of Play Services? Is that even possible?

My updated version came via an update of the search or maps app. I don't know about side loading or how you would get hold of the apk.
So does the update improve the battery life or not? It's really a placebo at best during the big update.

I'd say I've seen no difference. However, consistent battery life is important to me even if not that good. The real killer is when something like Google search decides to eat my battery in the course of a night.
I've read in other threads that if you don't have quality LTE in your area, the phone uses up mucho battery, trying to maintain/improve the LTE connection (searching for better LTE service). But those with quality LTE service don't have such issues.

Doesn't seem to matter what network you are on, 3g/4g, if your phone is searching for the signal all of the time, your battery will take a real hammering.
Hi guys! I've created this as a thread to discuss the so far mysterious and specific to 5.0 battery issues many seem to have.
Here you can discuss it, test theories and try to track down causes.
I made this to keep the clutter out of the Battery Life Help Thread sticky. As this is muddying the waters there.
Same things apply... Screen shots are helpful, specifically app wakelock screens. (need root for that though)
Also, Chances are there will eventually be an update to fix this from Google. So when that happens, or the issues are solved by members, then this thread will be closed and info added to the Battery Life Help Thread.
Thanks!
I won't be active very much in this thread BTW. I'm very busy here on XDA. I've created it for community discussion. ?
By all means... If you are rooted, and have Gsam and Gsam root companion installed.... You can post your app wakelock screen shots here......

Here we go. There's some proof about Wifi issue for ones who don't or want to believe and became angry to talking about this issue. As you can see No deep sleep wakelocks without Wifi. As clear as it should be.
And yes, everything is off. GNow, location, G+; any google services disabled. Also all notification or syncing options of 3rd party apps are closed. And it's a smartphone by the way.

Thanks but I'm not sure that I'll get some help though. Turkish or english, this issue will take much battery in these days.
For what it's worth, people who need to theorise / suggest / confirm 'issues' must do so LOGICALLY, and preferably with numbers and specific setup.
- The laws of physics apply in all cases, regardless of ROM / kernel. Work out WHAT is using your battery instead of just complaining of drain. This helps no one....similarly only quoting SOT is USELESS. It is how you use your device.....
- Any initial 'testing' needs to be done first on full stock factory images, with no additional apps installed. If there really is a WiFi bug....test standby drain with WiFi on / off over a long period of time. Only then can you actually compare logically. Any difference in your actual day-to-day setup can then be narrowed down to an app issue, with in 99% of cases is the real cause.
Well i narrowed it down tot google now. I did a clean install. I did my setup as i usually do. But first without google now. Because i don't use it. My SOT was then about 4 hrs. Then i was thinking. Hmmz lollipop is beter then KitKat. And maybe its fun tot use google now. So i setup google now. My SOT drops instantly to 2 hrs SOT. So i disabled google now. But my SOT stays at 2 hrs. I did again a clean install. Without touching google now and my SOT is beter then ever. 5 hrs. And i came tot understand that if you don't setup google now. The SOT became normal but if you setup google now SOT drops. And i think there a program from google now that keeps beeing active. Even with shutting google now off. Or google now keeps active even while you shut if off
Anyone know of an app that can control individual apps permissions, similar to the xposed module app settings? Fighting privacy/battery issues.
App ops? Can be found in the store
I have no 3rd party apps installed and also tested in safe mode. If wifi is on the battery drains with wakelocks. If wifi is off the battery drain goes away and wakelocks stop. That's not a theory or something. I'm testing this issue till I bought my Nexus 5. I'm lucky because I bought my Nexus 5 1 week ago and I flashed Lollipop images clearly. Also I relfashed 2 times more . There's a wifi issue in this version in Nexus 5 and it must be fixed immediately. That's the result. No need physics laws or something. There's to many person lives it and cannot use their smartphone properly. If I must close the wifi manually to save battery life and block wakelocks why I'm calling that thing a "smartphone"? By the way it's not the phone's fault. The OS is faulty for Nexus 5. The worst part is the fact that Google said this issue has been fixed. But it's not true. At least for most users. We saw some users doesn't have this issue but more of them has been rooted their phone or flashed custom ROMs and kernels etc... Personally I don't want to root my phone or use a custom ROM and kernel. I think it's my right as a Google Nexus 5 and Android final consumer. And also it's my right to sound off this issue. I cannot understand why some people are huffing to users like me?

Apologies my post wasn't actually directed at you, more at those who post without any detail and just conclude that it must be drain, I've seen many...
You have tested logically[emoji106], and you're absolutely right that full stock factory image should work without issue and without the need for root to fix anything.
Can you confirm also that the same drain happens on any Wi-Fi network? It shouldn't be a solution but with investigating. Can you determine which built in app is keeping your device awake?

No need for apologies or something. We're all here to solve some issues and make things better.
By the way my wifi issue happens if the wifi is on. There's no need to be connected to any network. If the wifi is on there's massive wakelocks in sleep mode and battery drains quickly. I tried anything but root or customizing ROM or kernel. Even I flashed 4.4.2 radio image with 5.0 stock ROM. I'M using it that way now. Same results.
And my tests are not only logical but I also have some quantitative clues. When I open the wifi I can see the wakelocks in stock battery graphic when the screen is off. If ı close the wifi wakelocks decrease and incomprehensible battery drains stops.
I agree. I'm getting an extra hour SOT without WiFi.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
SOT is not a main parameter. Especially in this issue.
For this wifi battery drain issue our main parameter is wakelock intensity when wifi is on and screen is off (standby) therefore battery drain in deep sleep mode. So you must check your off screen battery drain.
Any idea why Google play services is keeping my phone awake almost continuously? My location is set to battery saver. I've left it exactly the way it was on KK, Play services used to be around 2% on KK. Now on L, it's always in the top of the charts at ~20%. It says that mobile radio is continuously on. Does it have anything to do with the radio version?
Location History: On
Location Tracking: On
Gmail sync: on
Contact sync: On
Everything else is always off.

Try with those off to compare. ?

That is true, but KK never had that big of a drain solely based on location and tracking.
Does anyone else have the issue where android system is consuming 35+% of the battery? Looking at the stats it seems like one of the bundled services is keeping the radio on for 14/18hrs its been on.
Have the same isssue
Yeah, I'm having this issue too. Android System is consuming HUGE amounts of battery for me.
Thought I was the only one but glad that's not true! Still got good battery stats with the android system drain nonetheless.
Charged mine to full last night right before hitting the sack.
Woke up 7½ hours later and it had consumed 33% of the battery just sitting doing nothing bar getting email & polling (presumably) for Facebook updates.
And that was with Power Saving enabled. Bit disappointing, hoping when I disable auto-sync that it'll kill the drain.
There's lots of services running under Android Systems disable the ones u don't use, I have disabled some got better battery life, still testing some others...
The hardware on the phone is great, but touchwhiz drives me up the wall. I'll be happy if and when we get anything AOSP based, CM being the holy grail. Nice to know I'm not the only one getting this battery drain. I've disabled pretty much everything that's able to be disabled, as all I use is google services.
Same problem here.... Huge Android System battery drains.
I've played around with several things, and as of yet I haven't gotten it to stop other than turning off WiFi. Anyone found a fix?
Mine's more a combo of Android System and Google Services... both take up a majority of my usage... Services typically being a bit more.
Why are there two android systems? wtf...
Is there any way to reduce cell standby?

Same sh*t here. Went to bed last night fully charged, and 7-8 hours later, wake up with 23% of my battery gone.
I'm starting to wonder if moving away from the Nexus line was a mistake. I started running again and the N6 was just too big to lug along with me, on arm or in a waste band, so I decided to try Samsung.
Just got my S6 and I noticed this right away. Last charge I had 2:42 of SOT and "Android Systems" used 47% of the battery. I was just watching Netflix and YouTube mostly. My overnight drain is also quite high, about 1% every 30-40 minutes of standby.
Is that normal for most S6 owners?
To all:
Turn off VoLTE, turn off WiFi calling, install CPU Spy, ensure your phone is going into deep sleep. If it isn't, flash the stock recovery with Flashify, wipe the cache with it, then flash TWRP back with Flashify.
Post your results.

This is for everyone. If you haven't flash TWRP, then simply wipe the cache with stock recovery.
I just assumed most people would have TWRP flashed, my bad.
I am guessing that that this is an Android problem as the Galaxy S6 Edge has the same problem with battery drains.

I'm not rooted and I don't plan on doing so. I'm not sure of any other options. I unplugged it last night an let it sleep. Android system used about 14% of the battery. And I lost 20% charge. Cpu run time was 38 minutes too. and I never even woke it up post unplugging it.
I believe this Battery Drain Issue is a Lollipop issue. Was haing it with my One Plus One, I fixed it by going into privacy Guard, and going to Google Play Services and not allowing it to stay awake, and start by itself.
Ill find the actual thread and post it, same issues happening with a lot of phones using lollipop
Battery drain on a new device = bad flash (very common on android devices, first run)
1 wipe the devices and start it again from factory problem should go away. (at least the excessive drain anyway)
2 Ensure you have updated the Samsung Services app (this was responsible for most if not all battery drain issues if you reset your device)
3. Turn the bloody Screen brightness down and turn off Adaptive display (way way way too much battery drain using them)
4. LTE off and Cell data off if you on wifi, your wasting battery power communicating with cell sites you arnt using, the weaker the signal the more power you will drain for no benefit
6. GPS / Loc data off unless you need it even then wifi / AGPS is usually more than accurate, remember GPS + poor sky visibility = more power used to get a loc.
5 NEVER measure battery life for the first 24 hours way too much stuff syncing and updating to measure with any accuracy.
I get a solid 2 days out of the S6 with mixed use and a screen on time of 2:30 could get that upto 3 hours but i have a hearthstone addiction
As mentioned above, I highly recommend wiping the cache, even when not rooted.
Also, worst comes to worse, i'd completely redo the phone from scratch via the Smart Switch software samsung provide.
Hello everyone, I was recently inrroduced to the world of rooting, modding and installing custom roms and kernels to the device so I may sound like a noob here and there . I have a issue with my one plus six running stable oos 9.0.2 where I think I habe have high battery drainage, there are people who claim that their op6 lasts a whole day at one charge but I being a heavy user have to charge it up to 3 times a day. I have currently rooted my op6 with magisk installed and the list of mods is attached below, also the bbs stats are attached too along with all the necessary information, I am currently on the Ex kerenel Manager and have the battery settings turned on along with advanced optimization. Also I am using the lawnchair launcher v2 with pixel 3 live wallpapers coupled with the mod provided for aod . Can anyone tell me what should i remove to make my battery life more optimal or if my battery is fine.
So 10.2% in one hour, while playing pubg. Seems normal.
Yes, thats fine but the idle drain is way too high.

Have you also tried to disable the second Sim?
The pixel live wallpaper will do a number on battery.
Two Sims, live wallpaper and aod. You problem is right in front of you.
The AOD will suck quite a bit of battery, for me during the day i get around 2/3% par hour of standby. My graph looked like yours at first.
But, try putting it in you pocket when you don't need to have it on a table, etc. With OOS 9.0.2 and Franco Kernel, i get 0.42% per hour of standby while phone is face down during the night and thus AOD disables.
I'm not even trying to maximize battery, have Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and other apps running, Wifi + LTE, location disabled, with a fresh install of latest OOS stable and Franco Kernel r13 without tweaking anything :good: And i also use the Pixel 3 wallpapers, wich by the way look amazing used with the AOD.
Screenshots for illustration.
The OnePlus is not designed for Always on Display, but even with that, it definitely shouldn't be empty in 6 hours. But with heavy gaming, I believe the phone life tested at about 5 hours. You should see what it looks like when you don't game.
I get about 8 to 10 hours Screen on Time with with browsing, facebook, and casual use. I have 1 Sim, no live wallpapers, no Magisk modules. I also disabled the Ambient Display on lifting phone. (I probably did a few other small optimizations, but can't remember)

Wow Dude , your phone ui looks quite minimal and clean, are you using any launcher or icon pack? Also i have my location turned on always so can it be a deal breaker? Now as I focus, i think location too is sucking the damn battery off. Also while using Franco kernel do you have any problems with the brightness, I can't seem to disable low brightness while using the manager. My idle standby is too damn high thought averaging 2-3% even with the aod off. I think I mighy now consider a clean format.

Location services seem to use quite a bit of juice yes, saw very good results while disabling them.
Yeah I saw this brightness thing in the Franco app, but looks like it doesn't do anything, or it's a bug. I flashed blu.spark and the brightness is exactly the same ! I wouldn't pay attention
Idle standby on my end is 0.5%/h with Franco and Blu.Spark. So it's definitely ROM/setup related ! A clean flash should solve it !
Try Servicely from Franco to revoke WakeLock authorization for apps, I feel like it helps a ton with social apps too !

Do you use WhatsApp or snapchat by any chance? Both of those butcher battery life from my experience.

Yes, I do use WhatsApp, although i havr Snapchat installed, i don't use it on a daily basis.
hey guys I have huge battery drain issues and I can't figure it out. I am using a second sim, but I need that second sim (is there a way to disanle it, so that i can get phone calls?)
Did a clean flash yesterday, hoping things get better, but nothing. my phone used 14% in 6.5 hours . BBS shows me Net_scheduler, I tried somethings there too but no success.
what could else be the problem?

Considering you just said 14% in 6.5 hours of idle drain, it is a bit high though. Have you any mod installed or have Aod by chance, also how long does the net scheduler work? Also do check the summary for if the phone goes into the state of doze or deep sleep, id it does the problem might be with kernel wakelocks, i tried disabling the wakelocks as per the boeffla wakelock and ffs I can notice differences.

yeah, I get about 2-2.5%/hour on idle.
I should mention my setup, sorry:
OOS OB7
XxX installed, with disabled kernel tweaks
blu_spark kernel, but had also smurf no difference
I flashed a debloater from Tomatot (thought it might help)
no aod
Well, my phone is awake(screen off) quite a lot, but not too much, saw some others with insane battery life (not expecting that) with similar Awake time.
Sorry to ask this noob question, I am fairly new to this.
In BBS I see repeatatly net_scheduler , gcm, nlpcollectorwakelock, ddscardselectioncontroller.
Boeffla isn't it just for OP3-5T?. are there other settings I could change in tje kernel manager etc?
thanks a lot!!

Do you get that on Wi-Fi or also on mobile data? I get about 0.8-1%/h on Wi-Fi and up to 2%/h on LTE+ without music playback on OOS 9.0.2. i can tell you it's mostly an app that hides itself in the stats
E.g. Pokémon Go's adventure sync used GPS and datan regularly resulting in an awful 4%/h drain.

yaeh, it doesn't matter, is quite the same on wifi and lte.
alright, I think I'll search a little. thanks for your help
I reformatted to factory settings, and even reinstalled all factory images. I still get a lot of battery drain daily. the battery details screenshot indicates that Google is always on and Suspend Wakelock is always on. what can I do to fix this issue? I am unable to keep this phone otherwise. I always have battery drain issues on Android yet seems as though Google has not provided a stable fix...
I cant get even one hour of screentime on Android until it hits 80%.
I just need to know how to fix the Wakelock issue because I think that's what it is. I tried Wakelock apps but they don't do anything.
EDIT: resolved. just reflashed using Android Flash Tool and that corrected it.

Oy Vey. Battery life (power consumption) is outstanding on this device right out of the box. No rogue wakelocks here. Misbehaving apps and panel brightness are the two biggest drainers. Adjust your life and so called "SOT" will improve. Note the battery is 'only' ~3140 mAh. Don't expect all day longevity if gaming or in constant use. That's not what this phone is about.
I was able to resolve the issue by reflashing. I had used BBS hence why the suspendlockout at 100%.
Steps to resolve. (aware that this may not be the most ideal option for some)
- Reflash using the Android Flash Tool (don't manually update, just use the flash tool provided by Google)
- Start from scratch. Do not restore from backup. Install most needed apps.
- Observe battery drain over the course of the day
The issue was that Google app (not sure which app that is) did not run in background properly hence the high drain.
I was able to get 6 hours of SOT once I reflashed. Here is to hoping 7 hours of SOT with a modified kernel.

Kernel appears well optimized on this device; doubt you will see significant power utilization improvements with custom varients. More likely to score headaches w/o a corresponding benefit.
I'm on my second cycle. Got close to 9 hrs sot on first. Here's my 2nd after useing it for an hour this morning. Even better than my OP5T! I use wifi almost all the time since I don't get any cell bars at home.

I'm getting low numbers like op, 4-5 sot but I'm only on cell data (no wifi in this apartment for now). Could wifi vs cell account for such a big difference? Thanks!

Yep - especially if signal is weak/marginal forcing the mobile radio to maintain a higher power level. Same thing can happen on WiFi although have more options to cycle WiFi on/off during screen off operations. In contrast, mobile radio is on 7x24 unless you tell it otherwise.

Ok thanks. I’ll test it out soon on wifi and see what happens.
I saw that the Pixel 5 is about the same form size as the 4a but with the larger battery. Out of curiosity, anyone know if it’s possible to jam that 4,000mah battery inside the 4a? I haven’t seen the internals so don’t know if there’s enough room.

It's the app "BetterBatteryStats"
[APP][2.2+][11 Dec. 2022 - V3.1] BetterBatteryStats
I started BetterBatteryStats because I was missing the great battery history that Spare Parts allowed to call on Froyo. It has been a long journey since the first version. BetterBatteryStats provides an insight in following categories: - General...

Can be very helpful to find the app/service which effects the battery drain.
