[Canada] Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

So... Where are you guys pre-ordering your phone in Canada?
Bestbuy has it starting at midnight but they only offer phones locked to carriers.
I called Costco because they sell unlocked phones but they didn't have any information about pre-orders.
Edit: Pre-ordered the S8+ Midnight Black directly from Samsung.
CAD $ 1,290.10 with shipping and taxes.
Model SM-G955W
Free Gear VR with Controller.
I wish I had the choice between the Gear VR or Gear 360 camera. I would have chosen then camera.

I am also interested in the variant we will getting. Eg. is it the Snapdragon or Exynos?

Most likely the exynos, funny how they never mentioned either cpu just a 10nm cpu.

Confirmed with a Rogers rep and Mobile Syrup. We're getting the Snapdragon 835. Press F to pay respects.

Greetings,
Just placed the pre-order at the Samsung online store for an S8+/ Midnite Black. $1267 CDN, ouch!!

When the s7 was announced we were told the same story that we're getting the snapdragon, in the end we got the exynos, i wouldn't put too much faith into a rogers rep.

I guess it's time to return my Note 7 now :victory:

If you recall, the Note 7 came with the Snapdragon in Canada as well. I'd say it's legit.

MobileSyrup reported that Samsung Canada has told them we will get the Snapdragon CPU. I hope to get one on preorder tomorrow from Rogers. I just wish Canadian carriers would enable the FM radio functionality. I have it on my S7 Edge that I bought from AT&T last year so I know it can be enabled.

X means demo and U means unlocked, kinda like the s7 g930u in the US which is unlocked, odds are that is a snapdragon.
My preorder says SM-G950WZKAXAC so who knows.

Just wanted to give an update.
Checked using Aida64 app
Snapdragon 835 confirmed
Also front and rear cameras using Sony sensors

I have a Pixel XL. Thinking about doing an early upgrade for Bell from Best Buy. Just something about that sexy body. Lol. I hope this smooth and fast. I had some lags on my Note 7.

We're getting them on rogers in Canada . LTE just went live in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal. The Galaxy S2 LTE's are going to come into the stores in the next couple of weeks.

i've a hunch the Rogers version is going to be the Hercules, not the real LTE from Korea
I'm wondering how much power does LTE consume. 3g consumes more power than 2g. What about LTE ?

Hi, I am not particularly familiar with Canadian retailers so are there any retailers in particular that would be good to watch (that one could watch for then order and have sent to the US)
Cheers,

PS For the record, I am not all that interested in the LTE part (on account of the fact that I travel abroad alot) but a faster, ie 1.5 dualcore proc, is definitely of interest.

But why do ppl always need more cpu? Kernel cookers tend to underclock cpu to safe power on same performance level...consumption is already high. And the 0,5inch makes the phone even bigger (it already barely fits into my pocket) my phone is underclocked to 800mhz and undervolted as well. And i see NO differen e while gaming or in the UI....

Interesting gadget and good technology...
but it will pleonastic technology and money (will be come with expensive price) in my country..
3G/3,5G technology still far away from optimal speed and performance in my country..
But, that is the business..

I am not necessarily looking for the bleeding edge in terms of speed but more for "upgradability" for as long as possible. I have a HTC Kaiser for about 4 years now so when i purchase i want to get something that i don't have to bother worrying about replacing (hardware wise) for awhile... and as one upgrades OS vers one typically needs more mem and cpu.
Cheers,

Great Phones !!!
Will these work on AT&T currently?
as long as it support gsm
is fine
...More specifically, will the3g bands and / or LTE bands work in the US on at&t?
...and does anyone know if these are actually for sale yet in Korea?
Korea strikes again!! they did it with Hyundai, and now with the SGS2. The only thing i like more than my Hyundai is the Korean women. they love the caramel
I had a similar question.....my friend currently resides in Korea and she said she would get the phone for me and ship it to me as they are GSM but my question is......if it is unlocked will it work on T-Mobile 3G or AT&T 3G? Both use different frequencies and any confirmation on that would be good as I'm on T-Mobile and currently have the SG2. If it is compatible with T-Mobile 3G then I will most definitely wire her the money. Call me crazy but I love beast phones like this.

I told my korean friend looking for an import version, if it exists.
If it shouldn't have to be like that, which version between skt and lgu+
would be better for european use?
there is no need to import these phones..
they are already being released in North America.
just wait it out for the official launches of LTE networks in canada in the next week. rogers just launched with 2 devices and 1 tablet and bell will be next on nov 4th. the rest will follow suit. and ATT is getting the HD LTE model as well.
save your money and wait.
i already have one btw. click link below in my sig.
also rogers got the LTE model not the hercules. the picture you have in your first post op is incorrect.
that picture only applies to the HD LTE model.

Where can I buy the International Unlocked version of this phone?

So, I'm in the US. I use Straight Talk which uses ATT bands. I do want to get an S7 that will work with my provider. I understand that it would have to either be the ATT model, or the International version.
Where exactly can you buy the international version? Also, will it include the free Gear VR? Also, are there any downsides to getting the international version? Is it still possible to get support in the US for the international model?

You could probably buy it off from Amazon/Ebay or some other site. I'm not sure how often International versions get updated so that could be a downside. As of right now the only way to get the bonus Gear VR is preordering with a carrier, meaning no, you will miss out on the bonus if you want an international unlocked version.

Because one must choose the lesser of two evils... Exynos or... bloated with apps, and carrier boot logo, and having to find someone that can buy the phone and have their carrier unlock it. I called T-Mobile and they told me the phone must be with them (attached to someone's plan) for 7 days for them to unlock it.
I don't have any friends with T-Mobile and I live in South America, so I haven't got many options...
Hi. I just want to be clear... none of the Snapdragon variants have LTE band 28? No even t-mobile? I live in Panama and we have LTE on that band...

clove or handtec will ship to US and the prices are pretty decent. Cheaper than buying full price here in US. Make sure you read everything clove has to say about it though. There is a warning about Samsung locking their phones.
Simply use Amazon.de. They have a fully translated webpage (here is the link) and also the awesome customer service known from Amazon in English.

This is hilarious considering I tweeted to T-Mobile yesterday asking them nicely to take my phone back since I bought the pre-order without knowing Jack about the boot loader situation and that their CEO hasn't updated us either.

The S6 is Exynos and does CDMA, as does the Exynos Note 5. Likewise, Qualcomm does CDMA and GSM. CDMA/GSM has nothing to do with it. For the purposes of carrier unlocked phones, it doesn't matter. These SoCs can do either one.

We're not talking about the S6 or Note5. The Exynos versions of the S7/S7E don't work on CDMA networks. I'd be happy to be proven wrong if you know of someone using a G930F(D)/G935F(D) on Verizon.

Basically my interest here stems from my belief that the note 7 will be in the same exact boat as the s7/e devices, but honestly I'd prefer the exynos anyway, that 8893 with a T880 should be a beast! Plus i love exynos is way more efficient than the QC SoC...at this point, as long as they release an intl bootloader unlocked version (N935F?) I'll be fine with it...

You're correct, for some reason (probably cost saving) Samsung omitted CDMA support for its Exynos 8890 SoC this year. Apologies. I thought the capability was there but locked out for the US market. I also thought there was a Korean CDMA version of the Exynos, I was wrong.

Snapdragon or Exynos S7. Please let me explain my situation.

I am in the USA and I am on Cricket Wireless. So I have to buy the phone at full retail price. AT&T said that they will unlock it for me if I buy it at full retail price.
So I don't know if I should go with the Snapdragon or the Exynos version.
The Snapdragon version is about $700 from AT&T. While the Exynos version is $584.98 from amazon. The Exynos version is also the international version and I do go to Europe, Japan, and New Zealand. I don't need the LTE bands. 18mbps on HSPA+ plus is good enough for what I need. I just need it for directions and web browsing.
My biggest concern is which model is the most third party ROM compatible. If I buy this phone then I need to keep it for several years; and let's be honest most Android vendors don't really update their phones. So at some point I will need to put a third party ROM on it to extend the phones life.
The SuperMan-Rom appears to be the popular third party ROM for the S7. Is the SuperMan-ROM compatible with the S7 (non-Edge)?
So based all on of these variables which S7 model should I buy?
Thanks in advance!
The snapdragon just got root like 2 weeks ago so we don't even have a recovery module yet nor a truly unlocked bootloader, if I were you, I would get a international model because development is not hindered by a carrier which should mean much more options down the road
Don't buy the crappy useless carrier version. Buy the exynos version(SM-G930F) if Samsung pay is not important. But if you need US warranty and Samsung pay then Samsung released the official US unlocked version (SM-G930U snapdragon) last week. I would choose between one of these since you are anyway paying full price. Don't buy the crippled carrier version with their ugly logos and crap.
Sent from my SM-G930U using Tapatalk
1.Use swappa.com. Both versions are under 500 there.
2. I have owned both on tmobile. Other than volte/wifi/video calling features, the international model is better, with superior battery life and similar performance.
3. Us models have us warranties which may be worthwhile to you.
4.That being said, I'm using a tmobile phone now as root (beta) has arrived. Long-term, a snapdragon 820 will have better support as the chipset is universally used on the 2016 flagship phones. In July 2016, that is not yet the case.
5. The superman rom works on the 930f. I have used it without issue (as I have done with other roms)
Go for the Exynos variant and **** the carrriers. I have one and is bootloader unlockable, so I have the peace-of-mind of knowing I can install a custom rom when Samsung ends all support in two years. I also have Cricket as my carrier and it works great, I get LTE, but the status bar will only show 4g since I have the united arab emirate firmware, and I assume they don't use LTE over there. You can also intall the samsung pay apk on the UAE variant, as long as it is the 2.0.36 version or older. The latest updated version has disable samsung pay for this variant.

First, see if you can download and install the NextRadio app from Google Play. If the NextRadio app page says that it's not supported on your device, you can get the apk here: http://apk-dl.com/nextradio-free-fm-radio
Once installed, just launch the app. NextRadio will pop up with a pretty screen telling you that your device doesn't support it if that's the case. But if it does work, you'll be prompted to plug in your headphones to serve as the FM antenna. It will then apprise you of all local FM broadcast stations in your area and, if you like, allow you to use manual tuning mode.
I'll be very interested to learn what happens.
Thanks

Hmm . That may mean that the hardware is there but that it's disabled in the firmware - because we know it works on the US carrier-sold snapdragon versions. There's a lot of speculation about whether it's disabled at the hardware level or the firmware level on the exynos models... no one really seems to know for sure. In any case, thanks for testing it!
Edit:By the way, who is your cellular service through? A rep at Samsung's telephone tech support told me that the service provider must enable a proximity port for NextRadio to access the chip's receiver circuit. I know that NextRadio just works out of the box with locked S7's from Sprint, T-Mobile, or AT&T.

Okay, thanks. I also have T-Mobile and I too get the same screen when I try to use NextRadio on my SM-G930F. And T-Mobile claims to support NextRadio and the FM chip function on phones purchased through them. So I dunno.
So, the only difference between the European and US version is the chipset, samsung pay and the radio?
How would it work with the warranty? I am currently living in Europe, so I would buy a European version, what if I move to the States in the next year and something happens to the phone - isn't Samsung's warranty worldwide?

Major thanks!
I forgot to mention you should also install the older samsung pay framework, like the june version. Don't install the latest.

So you can download the samsung pay apk and use it on the exynos version here in the states?
I tried this about a week or 2 after it first came out and wouldn't work
Will try again in a few days when I have the phone again

It only work if your device is on the United Arab Emirate firmware. Use SP 2.0.36 and SPF 2.3.03. It works for me.

Pay with PayPal if possible so in case of a dispute you should get your money back quite fast. Read this too http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/0...-be-trusted-and-history-makes-it-obvious-why/, doesn`t look very trustworthy to me.

Didn't do a deep dive. I'm at work and found that on a quick search.
I'll probably wait for the Chinese version unless it pops up on a more known site.

Just wanted to thank you. I ordered today from mygsm.me, and it will arrive to UK within 3 days. Very easy guys to deal with. I got the Mocha Gold as well (it was my second choice after Space Grey which they don't have). Just to let everyone know, this is indeed the international version (MHA-L29). I emailed them before buying, and Nash from their sales department confirmed. I'll update with pictures.
I have an AT&T Sim, which can roam on 3, Vodafone, and EE with my Nexus 6p. I'll let you know what the Mate 9 works on.
