Troubleshooting occasionally unresponsive touch-screen - General Questions and Answers

I have an Asus Padfone S+, almost 2 years old. In the last few months I've observed the following behaviour:-
- Screen touches would not register reliably (roughly 90% failure rate, that is I would tap the screen 20 times and maybe 2 or 3 touches would register)
- Whatever app is currently running runs fine and smooth, and other input (hardware buttons, bluetooth keyboard) work fine without the registration problems
This behaviour seems to occur randomly, but almost always when the device is not plugged in to some form of charger (either USB from my laptop or from a wall outlet). I've had it about... once... in the last few months when it was plugged in, all other occasions (must be about 50-70 times by now) it was while unplugged.
System load is unremarkable, it can be very high without the problem occurring, and can be very low with the problem occuring.
I removed my external SD card, but no change in behaviour.
I have done a hard reset, with roughly 50% decrease in this behaviour (possibly because I did not reinstall all the apps I had before that) initially, with the behaviour roughly being as constant as before the hard reset by now.
The behaviour persists (rarely) even when I'm in TWRP. I've only really had this happen twice, so can't definitively make conclusions, but it's certainly not limited to normal operation.
Killing all apps does not seem to help.
Plugging my phone into the included tablet dock (Padfone, after all), I don't seem to get these symptoms at all. However I rarely use the touchscreen when it's in the dock, preferring to use my bluetooth keyboard, so I can't say for sure.
Possibly related - I have a DIY set of neodymium magnets stuck to the back cover, which I use to secure my phone in a DIY holder in my car. This may or may not be a cause or trigger for the problems above.
What sort of troubleshooting can I engage in for this issue, and has anyone seen something like this before?

Anyone?

Maybe it's hardware issue, or maybe it's because you have multiple social media apps installed (Facebook, Messenger, Whatsapp, Kik, Snapchat, etc..), they are famous for slowing devices down and making them sluggish/unresponsive.

Any suggestion on how to figure out which is the case? The thing is my phone doesn't feel sluggish/unresponsive in the manner you describe, only the touchscreen is unresponsive. For example if the problem is happening and I try to type with my Bluetooth Keyboard it's all snappy (typing wise) but trying to do anything with the touchscreen isn't.

[BUG] Unresponsive device after overnight / long charge

Greetings!
As mentioined in the first post of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=418150&highlight=issue+list I have encountered similar problems.
I own my TP for 3 days (2 nights) and on both mornings after being charged over the night the TP was absolutely unresponsive and only to be awakened by a soft reset. It couldn't receive calls, and the alarm of course didn't work also (so I missed one this morning - but wasn't late at work) Anyway, this is a serious issue to me, since it makes the phone absolutely unreliable. And I am not in favor of doing regular hard resets by the way ...
Help on this would be really appreciated.
Greetings, hugo
Mine does this everyday, but have you tried pressing one of the buttons like the home button, I know nothing happens for a minute but then it comes back to life with out the need for a soft reset
Haven't tried ...
Well, I haven't tried pressing a button and waiting, but this is not exactly the behavior, to expect from a phone of this kind. You see this wouldn't solve the Problem of not being reachable by phone and missing appointments. In fact I don't know, that how long I was unreachable on phone and in my profession this isn't just disturbing but unacceptable.
Hugo
I've had the same problem, not every time it's charged, but enough times to be a problem. I've switched off TF3D (Start, Settings, Today, Items, untick TouchFLO 3D, tick some standard items).
The problem has gone. Of course, so has TouchFLO.
Cheers,
Graham.

This could be of course a last resort, but TouchFlo is quite nice to use (although I cannot get TF to use PocketInformant as calendar app, although it is defined as standard - the original MS calendar app must be hardcoded somwhere ...). And of course as TF is one of the main features of this phone a great amount of it's costs are caused by that software. So if I couldn't use it, the phone would loose a lot of it's value.
Isn't there a sort of event log in wm6.1 to see, which event crashes the system?
Hugo
I get a similar problem in that I lose all sound overnight, so I too miss my alarms. I also get no sound through the earpiece so, although it vibrates when it is supposed to be ringing, I cannot speak on the phone as I cannot hear the other person, and it seems they cannot hear me either, so it obviously affects the microphone as well. I have done a hard reset but it still happens, so it's definitely a bug with TF3D. I know this because if I try to play one of my music tracks using the music tab in TF3D, it plays for about 5-6 seconds (obviously with no sound) and then it crashes TF3D and restarts itself, which sorts the sound issue out. No need for a soft reset here but it's still unacceptable as my alarms are useless, and for £500+ I don't expect such a stupid flaw in the software. Hopefully, a ROM upgrade will sort this out, but when that will be is anyone's guess at the moment.

I think that's what we have to wait for. Until then, it's a choice between bland-but-working or cute-but-unreliable.
have you tried any of these little mem resident babys to get your ram back and kill bad things while it sleeps

Hmm...I'm just wondering why not more people are reporting this? Anyone NOT experiencing this problem?
Not till now I didn't
Using Stock ROM
I am more and more convicee, that TF3D is quite a buggy piece of software (Aussen hui - innen pfui!). Additionaly to the described above, I got a "broken glass" effect yesterday.
I sure do hope, that HTC releases a ROM update soon, although up until now the Touch Pro isn't even listed on HTC's german support pages.
Maybe I'll give SPB mobile shell a try ...

Having same problem, not all the time though.

I have the same problem...
A few times already... even this morning.
TP is totally unresponsive and had to soft reset it to get it back alive.
ROM 1.90.401.1 WWE
Radio 1.02.25.19
Protocol 52.33.25.17U
I've had the HTC Touch Pro for about three weeks now, and since then it's crashed or become unusable at least once a day. I do not believe for one second that these issues are restricted to my handset, and comments on this forum back that up.
Problems I've experienced:
1. TouchFlo 3D screen corruption - "broken glass effect". The TouchFlo interface appears fragmented and split - it continues to function, but is unwatchable. The OS and other applications are unaffected. Cause unknown. Cured by soft reset.
2. Complete screen corruption + freeze. The entire screen gets a still image that looks like 'white noise' - random black and white pixels. The device is completely locked. Cause unknown. Cured by soft reset.
3. Device fails to wake up. Screen has been powered down, either having been switched off manually, or by timeout. Device later fails to respond to Power button. Happens occasionally without warning, and frequently (almost 100%) during overnight charge. Note - leaving the Touch Flo interface on 'Programs' tab (i.e. not 'Home') during charge seems to alleviate this (I don't yet have enough evidence to back up this claim).
I like this phone and its touch interface, but am pretty disgusted by the reliability issues, which I would guess are largely connected to the TouchFlo 3D code and/or hardware drivers. HTC really need to sort this out.
I've had the alarm fail on two mornings so far, needed soft reset.
I'm going to try disabling touchflo I think. Be nice to have pocketbreeze running again anyway.
Just out of curiousity
Do you have your phone set to turn off the screen even if it is charging? I don't have the Pro... yet, but with my 6700 I used to have to ensure the screen stayed on over night if I wanted to have a chance at the phone actually being responsive in the morning so the alarm would go off. Otherwise it would be as your Pro's seem to be doing. Will not turn on or anything until a soft reset. (It is not a fix by any means, I am just curious if it is still the same patern.)
I never charge over night simply to avoid it being charged for 8 hours straight. I keep a charge kit at work, and charge during the day as needed. In less than an hour, I get full battery. Then, I sit it next to my bed at night with no failed alarms.
Maybe it doesn't like the long charges.
I'm trying DCS's ROM now to see if it makes any difference at all. I'll report back in a couple of days. Maybe if I didn't have to charge it so often it wouldn't be so bad!
Wether screen is on or not, it doesn't make a difference. (Why should it on a working phone?)
I sincerely hope, that if those strange behaviours are gone in non stock cooked roms, that there will be some in German language as well ...
I am looking forward to another night!
By the way, SPB Mobile Shell didn't quite meet my expectations. (eg. it has also the sucking MS calender hard coded)
Experienced the "non-responsive in the morning" problem 2 times in 3 days, without the phone being charged. Both times I had the white noise effect on the screen.
Turned off TF3D (I like the phone more without it, actually) and the problem didn't occur in the last 5 days since I did this. It's most likely a TF3D related issue and it will prolly be fixed by the next update.

I have noticed/had this issue for a year now. No workaround seem to be found. What rom do you have? Same as mine?
Mine does it too... not sure why.

I am "happy" to see that other roms have the same issue. So this is more generic issue. Geniuses, where are you?...
I notice it doesn't work for me sometimes on stock when the phone is busy trying to do something, such as load webpages in Opera. Might want to see if there are a lot of processes running for you.
Same problem with me. I'm with the latest stock rom. Good that as a girl i have long fingernails for the software keyboard
It happens when the wifi is set to high performance and even normal mode iirc. Set it to energy save mode and the keyboard will function correctly. It's something about power draw or heat, probably power draw.
I have a keyboard issue with my Fuze and found that the amount of text messages is somewhat related. I removed all but 500 total message and the keyboard seems to work "normally" to a degree. I will periodically get a double letter, or missing letter (usually the v) but the issue doesn't happen nearly as often since i've removed old texts.
I'm on best battery and it's still the same issue. Also with me msgs have no relation, i have that since i bought the phone.
i'm use the latest official rom, but it's not good too.

no respond from touch screen

Hi, for the past two days, I have been having issue with occassional lack of response from the touch screen. Whenever I pressed the power button for a few seconds, I got a list of options: power off, data network mode, flight mode, restart. However, there was no respond when I touched he screen. I just pressed the power button slightly, went somewhere, tried again and the device resumed to normal. what is happening? is there a way to fix this issue without rooting ?
You are without a doubt the unluckiest user I've ever me. Is there anything on our device that does work?!
Mine does sometimes lose touch responsiveness. The pen still works, but touch does nothing. A reboot usually does the trick.
it was working nicely but suddenly I got maps has stopped, follwed by andoid system has stopped message. Then, on the past two days, lost touch screen response. Not sure if the following are related o my problems. 1. I use iBalls as protector of the corners for about a week. Yesterday, not two days ago, I joined the Japanese docom mobile phone services. They made some changes in the settings to allow me to use their 4g and wifi and phone networks. After that, I lost touch screen response more often than two days ago. Is doing a factory reset a good way to solve the problems? I recall that there were two firmware updates.
Well, if one of the corner balls touches the screen, that could kill the responsiveness.
As for the changes they made, those were probably the APN settings. They're required to use the internet and vary per provider. Pull out the SIM, see if that makes a difference.
A factory reset usually solves system errors.

I recall that they did some APN settings. They also set up the Mail connection. Before factory reset, is backing up using keis the best way? I don't kow if keis also backup whatever that have been causing the issues.
The balls just slightly touch the corners sometimes. Do you mean if by chance more than one ball touches a corner, this could confuse the system and cause a lack of respond? Sometimes even there were lots Of battery power, the system did not wake from sleep. It was like there were no power. I had to put the device away and waited for awhile before I could use the device again.
Any backup brings the risk of backing up the issue as well.
I recommend using Helium, back up only the app data you can't live without, do the rest manually and start with a clean device.
And yes, I did notice that if something is constantly pressing the screen, it gets confused sometimes. I had it happen with (you can laugh) my cat, she had her paw on the screen, messed the whole control up.

Well, what apps or games do you not want to lose the data of? Is there a game whose progress took you months to achieve, things like that.S Note and the like can all be synced through your Samsung account, by the way.
Thanks. Will Samsung's software also backup the mails from the mopera email account I got from my phone provider?
Not sure if this is related. I did not use the iBall protector yesterday and there was no problem with the touch screen's responsiveness.

I don't know, I never use KIES.
Test it without the balls for a few more days, if the problem doesn't come back, you've found the culprit.

I've had this happen to mine a couple of times, the hardware buttons still works (even the capacitative ones) but the screens refuses to do anything. The first time it happened was when a small droplet water landed on the screen, and the second time is still a mystery, but a restart solved the problem both times so I suspect it was something I did rather than any hardware issues... Having said that this hadn't happened on any other device I've owned.

Experimenting freezes while using the task switcher / keyboard lags on whatsapp?

Is anyone else experimenting random freezes while using the task switcher? When I'm scrolling through apps sometimes I swipe to keep swiping and my finger keeps moving but the screen won't react for a couple of seconds? The same happens to me while using chrome and the facebook app.
But the worst case of the phone misbehaving has to be on whatsapp, it freezes, it lags, the keyboard goes crazy, a letter stays magnified and the rest of the stop wont appear on screen for at least 1,5 seconds, the keyboard just stops working it wont vibrate until the rest of the words I typed appear on screen.
I know my phone its not faulty because this is the second pixel 2 I'm using and the first one showed the exact same issues ; I tought to myself maybe its just some android 8.0 bugs, they will fix it with 8.1 but I got another pixel 2 and got the 8.1 and it fixed none of those issues . :crying:
Never had anything like that. So if it's happened with 2 devices for you then logically it must be something about your setup (or rather, something that's different between yours and mine). The question is, what?

I dont have a lot of apps, I like keeping blout to a minimum, the only thing I can think of is that I have the phone set to vibrate when I use the keyboard and that I have 3 languages set up on my keyboard? :crying:
That would be odd if that was the cause (though keyboard haptics are the first thing I turn off on any phone).

Question Zflip Rebooting And Freezing Issue

Hello folks, I have an issue with my zflip device. It heats up a lot on the external display, after which with any app (be it camera, or Instagram, or other) it freezes, then it remains stuck on the screen for 10/15 seconds and then restarts by itself and I have to put the PIN back. Consider that I have already sent him for assistance and they have already replaced him, he had another problem. Now I'm trying to remove the apps one by one and use the phone to see if the problem is created by an app, but besides that, chat us I don't know what to do anymore .. www.omegle.site obviously, I tried to restore and I'm on Android 12 .. a delusion. If anyone can help then please reply to me.
If you have a "new" terminal, presumably checked by the service centre before shipping, it sounds like a software issue.
Heating up is due to chip or sensor activity, and freezing could be a RAM issue - this phone doesn't have an enormous amount of RAM, but more than sufficient to avoid reboot. Maybe the phone is getting so hot it reboots as a precaution.
It sounds like an app is always active/it's keeping a sensor active, so you could make sure the preinstalled apps are optimised for the battery in the settings. Also check battery usage by app, that should point to the usual suspects and you could start there.
I don't use stuff like Facebook & Instagram, so I simply uninstall or disable them from the apps menu. Social & media apps are notorious for battery drain, and within the app there are settings which may be causing that heating up/freezing.
If I were you, I'd back up your important data and do a factory reset, then run it a couple of days with the minimal setup, no additional apps.
Then every 3 days, install groups of them (depending on how many you have, say 5). Then if you get the symptoms again, you'll know it's due to one of that group.
Depends if you wanta quick fix, or to really know which one is responsible
