Hey guys,
The title says it all really. I'm getting pretty poor performance in Google Maps (stutters, laggy) and to make matters worse the GPS does not lock on my position particularly well either... Anyone else having similar issues? Anything I could do?
I find that the GPS on the Mate 9 (which ought to be the same as the Pro) locks on quickly, and is quite OK for following roads.
But there are many complaints about the GPS on the Mate. Try reading through this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/help/gps-problems-stats-reports-t3508213
I only really use it with Waze and works quite well. Locks in faster than my last iPhone.
Have you tried clearing Google Maps' cache?

Do not compare your CRAP with Nexus S.
We got excellent GPS.

If by "excellent GPS" you mean, that its GPS will show you as moving wildly about between 100m when you're stood perfectly still. Yes, you're right.
It's bad. The best lock I've had is to only 10m, and something needs damping down, because one of the accelerometers goes crazy - use GPS status to see - and refuses to settle, and that affects your position drastically.
I find the GPS to be very good. Better than in the Galaxy S I used previously. These phones will never meet the degree of accuracy found in dedicated devices, they also rely on a data connection, but it was good enough that my TomTom got donated as i don't want to have too many devices in the car.
Oops sorry

I know that Garmin is not yet available for Android, generally.
What is the best alternative currently available? Both insofar as map and routing quality, as well as features, UI, etc...?
Google maps

No, that's not an alternative. Google Maps requires a signal to function, Garmin does not. I'm talking about a full, standalone GPS application.
My favorite is Sygic Aura.

Looking at it, it's got a lot of negative reviews, including some comments about it not working on an Atrix.
It also looks like they're pulling a bait and switch, calling it free, when allegedly, it's only a 7 day trial.
What's your experience with it?
Copilot is really good.

For a real offline navigation app i'd go for Navigon.
For a real offline mapping app i'd go for Locus.

I need both, which is what Garmin does, and what I'm looking for an alternative for.
Does anyone have experience with a multitude of these apps? Recommending the only one you've ever tried isn't a good way to get a feel for how they compare to one another.

Hi,
HD2-AndoidSD-Americandroid
i use google maps now...is realy good.
Offline:
Navigon....easy to handle but made some problems with the spreach if you use a bluetooth radio. Would have stayed on this if i would not need the bluetooth feature. Looks very "professional"
Igo...maps can not be transfered individualy (just complete packs)....not so nice
Copilot...quite good. Use it now if i need offline navigation.
Disadvantages:
- To much features and settings. You can almost change everything (which is not so good while driving)
- Voice sounds like the litte robot at buck rogers...
I think it all goes down to the maps. For example, for Eastern Europe, I use IGo with TopoMaps.
Why not stick with garmin?

Did you not read my first post? Because Garmin doesn't make a general mapping product for Android that isn't locked to their own device.
I have seen a demo, of turning your camera on and having an overlay of GPS showing you directions, it does not use the map it uses your camera and arrows show you how to get to a location. It also does this while driving. You see the road thru your camera and it shows where to turn and also arrows. Has anyone else seen this ??? Or even know where to get this app. I would sure love to have it. I seen the video only once and can't find it again. I have searched and searched for this app. Could anyone help in pointing me in the right direction...????

Route 66 Brings Augmented Reality to Android GPS Navigation
apparently it is for android my bad, and seems like a cool concept but im guessing this would equal major battery drain. but if you have a car dock then what the heck right?

Thanks now to get the app. My job I travel so much and thought this is the ticket for a great GPS system. Yes I am sure the battery drain is rapid
Who else got gps issues with this device? When location is set to gps only and data turned off, gps doesn't work. In my previous devices it would work no problem.

You certainly have hardware problem... Try the GPS tester on play store (location on GPS only) and if it can't find the signal, you have hardware problem

I spent all day figuring out this problem. When in "GPS ONLY" mode, I can't connect to GPS. After trying various forum suggestions, this one worked for me. I downloaded the app called GPS Status & Toolbar in the Google Play Store. It launches every time I open Google Maps and can now lock me onto the GPS Satellites. From my tests, I was able to lock onto GPS in 25 seconds when standing by the window at the office, 50 seconds from my office desk, and I'd imagine faster when outdoors. Hope this helps.

No problem. Glad it worked out for you. Was a strange issue to me because my previous phone, Nexus 4, had no such problem.
Just thought i would make a threat to address the google maps being laggy / unresponsive.
It can usually be fixed by changing the display to HD+ mode if this was bugging anyone like it was myself.
i actually do have that problem- in hd+ mode :/

Thanks, that did help but not ideal. We can't not enjoy the FD+ just because it will slow down Google Maps. Come on Google, sort it out!!
I guess Google blames it on Huawei, and Huawei blames it on Google. The fact remains that these problems were also reported on the Mate 10, 6 months ago and no progress has been made.
Don't have this issue. CLT-L09 variant.
Came here from the P20 forum. I have the same problem on my device.
CLT-L09 here, used maps yesterday with no problems or lag
Good to see it's not just me.
It's laggy as hell for me. Far slower than it was on my LG G4 that I just moved from. So slow and jumpy!
Same issue here, hopefully either Huawei or Google will fix the issue over next week or so. (I can use the workaround till then but it is mildly annoying)
Strange how some people have this issue and others not. Maybe it's region dependent? I have a UK P20 Pro (Three network - dual sim) and I have been using it for navigation for a few days now with no issues. It is pretty much running the same as it did on my Galaxy S8+.
Not noticed lag anywhere so far! Scrolling is better than it was on any of my previous Samsung devices.
My only issue is the stock icons and launcher. It looks too outdated. I'll stick Nova on it soon when I have the time to set it all up.

I have the same phone (P20 Pro Dual SIM from Three), though as per one of the previous comments, mine is a CLT-L29 as opposed to CLT-L09. Could that be the reason?

What exactly is the issue? Is it terrible lag? I want to understand how bad the situation is and when it happens to see if I can reproduce it.
I have the same model as you, so I find it very strange. Are you using a third party launcher or have you done anything else to your device since you set it up?

You can see the glitch here.
I find this strange also as I have never seen it. In fact maps has been super fast for me. I am dual SIM from three UK. CLT-L29 model
It is strange. I have tried to uninstall updates and install it again and they didn't seem to work.
The slowness is in the lag when you try to move the map or even when clicking around or when searching.
With FD+ switched off, it seems to work absolutely fine. Just like it did on my Nexus 6P
Hopefully, it will be fixed soon, so for now I am just going to live with HD+ setting
It's poor if it's been a known issue for 6 months. I'm on EE in the UK (see attached) and I feel cheated if I have to change the screen resolution for a mainstream, hugely popular app to work as it should.
It's made me nearly as unhappy as when I discovered that only one of my P20 Pro's speakers were working.
That's not normal, right?! ?
What software build are you guys on? I am on 8.1.0.103 and I have the maps issue. I saw that an online reviewer at android authority was using software 8.1.0.106 and said they were on "beta" software... lol. Am I on alpha then?
Can anyone confirm if maps works on 8.1.0.106?

Looks like maybe the dual sim works (maybe the firmware version)
I'm on 103 on L 09 (UK single sim) and it took me ages to work out why maps wasn't working.
Hmm, this is even weirder! I am on dual SIM and my firmware version is only 8.1.0.102, which doesn't match with anyone of the versions you are talking above.
I miss my stock android on Nexus already :'(
