Difference Between Backup & Reset Vs Accounts Sync? - General Questions and Answers

I purchased a new tablet & when I first sign in it only gives me the option to add apps & data from an old phone that I'm no longer using. So upon review it seems that if I go to Settings / Backup & Reset on my current phone & old tablet, the Back up my data is turned off. I never even knew that option was there. But on both devices if I go to Setting / Accounts & tap on my Google account, all the options (App data, Calendar, Contacts, Gmail, etc) are turned on for syncing. I always thought that backed up everything to the Google account. So what is the difference between the Backup & Reset setting and turning on Sync under Account settings? Very confusing!

Deleting an email account problems...

So, I recently needed to wipe my Kaiser, but of course did a backup using sprite backup first to take my data with me. Now in a way the most important bit of data I needed to get out of the back up were the SMS (I use Gmail so I planned to just have it resync through IMAP), and other than that, my My Docs and Personal Databases I've been reinstalling everything. However, I've hit a problem with my emails...
My texts have been restored perfectly, however my gmail account is not listed. Initially I though that that was fine, however it turns out that the phone still thinks that the account is set up, even though it's not listed in the Accounts page. Furthermore, SPB Mobile Shell lists it as an available account in the messaging tab, though clicking on it only takes me back to the Account Chooser.
What I want to do is delete all the existing email settings that are hiding on the phone and then re-download my email from Gmail, however I don't know where the account data and settings are stored. I tried deleting the contents of \windows\messaging\ but that didn't seem to change anything...
Any suggestions?

[Notice] Google account info for ROMS Please Read.

I've noticed that there are a lot of users that are flashing ROMs and reporting FCs (Force Closes) after getting their accounts set up so I figured
I would share some information that will not only help the DEVs in new reports from users but also help users enjoy all of the work put forth by
the Devs.
This will cover the Google account settings and help understand some of the features that these settings have and how they effect ROMs once
they have been installed.
Google account auto Sync and App back-Up/Restore does just as it says but when using ROMs with different base versions such as 2.2.1 and 2.3.4
and all in between can have a bad side effect unless you set them up the right way. In "Settings" there are two allowances that you
have to make.
1. "Background Data ( Covers Applications can sync, send, and recieve data at any time. )"
2. "Auto-Sync ( Applications sync data automatically. )"
3. "Backup Data and Settings ( Backs up applications and system settings. )"
These work great for email, contacts, and calander accounts but Google actually backs up more than that. System files for previous settings and profile
settings also get backed up which can cause force closes and ROM errors if restored to a ROM using a different base version of these settings.
If you were using Froyo (2.2.1) and these two settings were on then its safe to say the permissions and settings from this profile were backed up in
anticipation that something may go wrong with your device, when you go to a different base version (ROM) such as Gingerbread (2.3.4) Google doesn't
check to see if the base version has changed when you first set up your phone (after flashing a new ROM) and restores the previous settings for those
accounts. Now if you just flashed something different than you had before this will cause "Force Closes" so lets get down to how to bypass the feature.
Most ROMs require you to reboot twice before setting up accounts or anything else which is correct but once the ROM has loaded for the second time it
may ask you if you want to log into your account(s) before continuing on, you want to skip through all of the steps including Wifi set up.
1. Go to settings.
2. select "Backup Data and Settings"
3a. Disable "Backup My Data" and "Automatic Restore"
3b. " If your a flash junkie like I am keep these settings turned off other wise you will have issues later"
4. Back out and go to "Accounts and Sync Settings".
5. Disable "Back Up Data and Auto Sync".
6. Back out and now go and sign into your accounts but don't sync them, just sign in.
7. go to each account and sync Contacts, Mail, and Calander manually.
After all of the accounts are done you can go back into "Accounts and Sync Settings" under General Sync Settings and enable them. This will bypass the app sync
feature Google uses for these accounts. There is also a way to disable JUST the app and system files in your Google account so it no longer saves system settings
and I'll update the thread at a later date.
I hope this helps with some of the issues people are having with various ROMs.
Edit: There are Apps that are saved by this method by Google, system settings, app settings and data of both which can also cause problems with the way a ROM runs and is managed. Be aware of the last time you saved prior system/app data and avoid these settings from being installed into the next ROM.

[Q]Remove Google Backup

How to remove the applications you begin to install after each hard reset using Google backup&restore?
I'm not talking about the Contacts or Gmail being pulled in (that's fine),I just don't want the apps & settings
I've tried the various resets (with backup turned off), but nothing gets me back to a blank, clean phone.
Is there a way to remove?
Thanks.
Oddly enough, this never works for me anymore. Contacts and whatnot come back, but applications never self reinstall since about six months ago. I always assumed since I have to agree to the terms and conditions of the market, it won't start running until I've done so. No real idea though, if anything, don't add your Google info in the initial setup. Set up your settings and whatever else you need to do, then add your Google account info in Settings > Accounts. From there, if it starts to redownload everything, just cancel them before they have a chance to finish. You could also try force closing the market. I did that once when it started to download my apps, it got one app through and quit the rest.
I've checked the online market, there's no settings in there. Hope you figure it out.
When you add the Google account, at the very end, there is this option "Keep this phone backed up with my google account". Unselect that option.
Untick "Automatic restore"

Prevent Initial Sync when adding Google Account

So back in October, my wife and I both purchased the Note 5. We started using Google Photos, and I found a way to add both of our google accounts to each others phones so we could share our photos instantly. I had a problem adding her account to my phone, as it would sync everything (contacts, calendar, health data, etc.) immediately, but this did not happen when adding my account to her phone. I messed around with it for some time, and found an option that was not the same on both of our phones. (I think it was the backup account, but can't remember for sure). Whenever I disabled the option, whatever it is, on my phone, it allowed me to add her account without initially syncing. Keep in mind, my method for doing this on both phone was as follows every time I tried it.
1. Turn off Global Auto Sync
2. Add alternate account
3. Turn Off Mobile Data and WiFi so the phone was not online
4. Turn Auto Sync back on
5. Settings>Accounts>Google>(other account) and turn off Auto Sync on everything except Photos (Gmail in the case below)
6. Turn On Mobile Data and WiFi
Kerblam! Success.
However, I am trying to accomplish the same thing with another google account I have an alternate use for, but only want the gmail to sync. But no matter what I try, every time I add the account, it initially syncs everything. (I know this because next to every category, it says "Last Synced on MM/DD/YYY hh:mm) And obviously, all of my other account contacts, calendar data, etc. appear. I don't want to take the chance of just manually deleting everything after turning off the sync for each item in case the sync gets turned back on after some update or somethings, and it syncs the account with the phone and I lose everything. Has anyone had success doing this? I've been scouring the web for quite some time now with no luck. Neither Google or Samsung were of any help. Thanks in advance for any help : )

how to transfer Messages texts, backup does not work

Verizon Moto E4 running Android 7.1.1, that will not backup with the built-in backup. At this point the only reason why I care about the backup, is to backup Messages (the new Google SMS app) so I can restore them to a replacement phone. Apparently Messages does not push texts to the cloud, because when I setup the new phone with my gmail account, without restoring a backup, all I get are emails (gmail), contacts, calendar, etc.
Settings > Backup & reset > Back up my data = on, backup account set to a gmail account, automatic restore is on (all of these are the default when setting up the phone).
Settings > Accounts > Google > all items are enabled and have been synced as of an hour ago.
If I launch Google Drive, on the phone or in a web browser, click on the left side menu icon and scroll down to Backups, it says "Your device is not backed up".
Things I've tried:
Connected to power, and fully charged.
Rebooted
WiFi connected and strong signal, AP is 5 feet from the phone.
Removed the gmail account, Settings > Accounts > Google > dots icon "Remove account"
Emptied the cache, Settings > Storage > Cached data > confirm clear cached data dialog
Add the gmail account, and during setup accepted the default which is to backup the phone to Drive.
I've literally been messing with this for two days, leaving it in this state overnight, and it will not backup. Again, strictly all I care about is migrating Messages texts/chats from old phone to new phone, and the only way I know how to do that is to restore a backup from old phone to new phone during setup. If someone has an alternative way of migrating Messages, that's cool too. But I still think it's dreadful that Backup says it's on but days go by and doesn't backup.

Looks like something is broken in the google backup framework. What You can do is backup your messages using a third party app and restoring. The only way to fix this to reset the phone. But first backup your texts using another app.

OK thanks, I'll give SMS Backup & Restore a shot. The backup is straightforward, and backed up to xml on Google Drive. I'll see later how the restore goes. But the backups are also not working on the new phone, which is a Mogo g6 I just got from Project Fi (damn slippery phone!), which does not instill confidence in built-in backups. But that version of Android, 8.0, does have a manual backup now button, and that worked. Why automatic backups refuse to go is beyond me.
Curiously, the old phone did have a three day old backup before I got started with the transfer, but I wanted a newer backup. I figured toggling backup from on to off to on would kick it in the pants. Well, it deleted the three day old backup and then has refused to backup for the next two days.
