Problems with LG V20 apps or mods? Tell us what you found and what fixed it. - LG V20 Guides, News, & Discussion

I'm starting this thread because in many other threads folks are discussing battery issues or whatever and it turns out that the culprit is not the native phone/software or custom ROM, but a rogue app or mod or setting that isn't playing nice.
Let us all know what you have found.

I'll start off.
Adaway works great! For a while. Then it starts stopping all data, whether cell data or wifi. You can't do anything. Reboot and still no connectivity. You have to disable Adaway to use your phone again.
This is what I found to be a problem. This was the solution I found. If someone knows how to use Adaway permanently I would like to know what they did.

Here is another issue:
You are on a custom rom and you want to use wifi calling. You turn it on but still have cell data on.
You use wifi calling and then at some point turn it off. Now you try to make a normal call and you can't hear anything.
Wifi calling and cell data don't play nice on some custom roms.
Here is what I did:
Enable wifi calling in settings.
When you want to use it, turn on airplane mode.
Then turn on wifi. Wifi calling will pop up in about 10 seconds.
Make your calls. When done, turn wifi off.
Turn airplane mode off and you'll be back to data calling.
You don't want to have wifi calling and data on at the same time. There appears to be a bug that borks the data calling after having wifi calling on at the same time.
Cheers

Switching between WLAN & WWAN?

so I am curious if anyone has run into this issue (or if it's not an issue and rather it's just the way the phone behaves, perhaps someone can tell me if there is a workaround in settings?):
it seems to me that turning wifi on doesn't always make wifi the active connection. it's intermittent, but it appears to happen frequently.
I found out because I started to download some stuff out of my audiogalaxy collection (which REQUIRES wifi, it doesn't let you do it on mobile data) and it kept telling me to enable wifi to continue downloading.
speed tests confirmed that I was on mobile data, not wifi... even though wifi was turned on and connected.
I've also noticed that occasionally, you'll turn wifi on and it won't replace the mobile data icon... I imagine it's all related.
any of you guys encountering this or should I go get myself a replacement?

wifi sleep policy too sleepy on Sidekick with GO2

I don't really know if this is peculiar to Glorious Overload (which I've been running for a week or so) or is maybe a kernel problem on the Sidekick 4G.
I want my wifi to stay connected when the screen turns off. I've tried setting the wifi sleep policy to both "never" and "never when plugged in" with limited success. Seems to sometimes stay on and sometimes not. When it gets into the "sometimes not" state, the only cure I have found is rebooting the phone. Other than that, I haven't yet caught a pattern to it.
Anyone have any info or suggestions?
(For those wondering, I want wifi to stay on so that I can use the quite nice "AutoAir" app to turn off my 3G/4G data connection [to save battery] when I'm connected over wifi. And I want that because I'm trying to use "Groove IP" to do all my calls as VoIP, which is somewhat better over wifi when it's available.)
(For those who don't know how to set the wifi sleep policy, try Settings > Wireless and network > Wi-Fi settings. Then hit the menu button and select "Advanced".)
Well, I checked my advanced settings, and mines was on never. I know it's woring because I download a lot of crap, esp via torrent clients. And once I have wifi on, it doesn't use 4g anymore. When I turn it off, 4g comes back. Mind you, I don't use and switcher apps or anything of that matter.
Quite odd that you're having a problem, are you stock GO2?
Sent from my Sidekick 4G running PDT's Glorious Overdose.
Yes, stock GO2.
For me, the behavior is intermittent. Sometimes seems to stay on, but sometimes seems to "forget".
There seem to be a zillion "fix your wifi" or "keep your wifi on" apps in the market, so I am trying a few of those now. (Slow going due to the intermittent nature of the problem I'm trying to solve.)
I noticed at the end of your post that u want to turn off your data and keep your wifi on to save battery, but with our device having wifi on uses more power than data. Mainly because our data and our cell signal are on the same radio, so by turning off data you really are doing nothing, because your cell service is still using the radio, but now that you've turned on wifi you now have the cell/data radio on and your wifi radio on. Really the fact that our cell and data are in the same radio is great because it really cuts down on battery use. So there you go. Learn something new everyday. please thanks this post if you didn't know this or if it helped you.

You're right ... I didn't know that.
The other reason I want to keep the wifi on (apart from my faulty reasoning about battery life) is that VoIP is generally better over wifi. It's easy to get that arranged for outgoing calls, but the phone is generally napping for incoming calls.
I may have to rethink my whole strategy for this.

Cell Standby

Cell standby is eating up all of my battery. I have no idea what is doing it. Any suggestions?
I'm on T-Mobile.
I fixed the issue. It's caused by having WiFi turned on. Hopefully a fix is pushed out shortly but in the meantime this is what I did to resolve the issue: Turn off WiFi, fully charge device, restart and go fourth.
I was able to fix my cell standby issue buy turning of WiFi, fully charging the phone and restarting. No issues as long as I don't turn WiFi back on.
if you use the t-mobile app, they have a feature to automatically turn off wifi once you leave an area that you automatically connect wifi to. it's really interesting. it only turns on wifi and connects to networks you have previously already connected to. I assume it uses gps, worth a shot trying, can't report improvements yet because I haven't tried it yet
Same Issue with Verizon. Although I have no intention of turning Wifi off and racking up a data bill, so thats not an option unless Im out of my house.

Help with wifi bug and hotspot woes

I have a sprint galaxy S6 that I rooted years ago with the pingpong root. So its on the stock rom and never updated passed 5.0.2 I believe. I haven't done much with the root except enjoy the use of the hotspot that sprint tries so hard to deny users. However lately I've been having problems. The build in hotspot no longer works, and I suspect its some stealth update from sprint. It'll turn in without issues, but then I'll watch my mobile data disappear. The 4G blinks off, then it tries 3g, then nothing, then 4g, 3g, nothing, etc... Turn the hotspot off and everything returns to normal.
Fine. I'll download "Wifi Tether Router" and use that. However, every 5-15 mins my laptop loses connection and the hotspot won't show up in the list of networks despite it still running. What I suspect happening is my wifi is quickly turning on and off, disrupting the hotspot. Now, after getting the phone and going through all the settings, I turned off connection optimizer and unchecked the allow scanning. However every once in awhile while using the phone, if I happened to have the drop down menu down.. I'd notice the wifi quickly cycle on then off. It never affected anything I did so I left it be. Now when using the tether app, I rechecked all my settings, even turning off "keep wifi on while asleep" and checked the dev settings to make sure the wifi scanning/roaming was off. I am completely lost. Are there any settings I'm missing? Is there anything I can do with root to stop wifi from turning itself on without user interaction?
Or, is there any way to fix my built in hotspot? I have a new laptop and now have more use for this function.
Thanks guys.
bump

Question Data randomly drops after leaving WiFi & other fun issues

After the recent update my phone will show no internet connection after traveling outside a wifi area. It's dropping data. If I enable airplane mode and then disable airplane mode it will then go online. Anyone else experience this issue?
Also lately while making calls, when I have the speaker enabled, it will randomly turn off repeatedly during a phone call. Any fixes?
Having none of those issues. It would help to know what type of device you have and which carrier you're on so folks with similar setup can share their experiences with you.

Check to make sure switch to moble date is turned on in settings-connections-wifi-advanced
no issues at mine, so make factory reset and fresh apps install (not recovery)
