Cell standby is eating up all of my battery. I have no idea what is doing it. Any suggestions?
I'm on T-Mobile.
I fixed the issue. It's caused by having WiFi turned on. Hopefully a fix is pushed out shortly but in the meantime this is what I did to resolve the issue: Turn off WiFi, fully charge device, restart and go fourth.
I was able to fix my cell standby issue buy turning of WiFi, fully charging the phone and restarting. No issues as long as I don't turn WiFi back on.
if you use the t-mobile app, they have a feature to automatically turn off wifi once you leave an area that you automatically connect wifi to. it's really interesting. it only turns on wifi and connects to networks you have previously already connected to. I assume it uses gps, worth a shot trying, can't report improvements yet because I haven't tried it yet
Same Issue with Verizon. Although I have no intention of turning Wifi off and racking up a data bill, so thats not an option unless Im out of my house.

What is with this? I 've gone through several HTC phones on the EVO and everytime I lose my wifi. Anyone can help?
When do you lose the Wi-Fi?
I use the wi-fi in my house and it will maintain a constant signal.
UNLESS
It goes to sleep mode, then it turns off the wi-fi as well.
Whenever I bring it out of sleep, it always has to re-connect.
I don't know if there is some registry setting you can set to keep wi-fi turned on.
I think the risk is that it will drain the battery much quicker though.
I'm using the MAPL build 2.60 beta for a Dash 3G and the battery life is incredible.
You can make it stay on by going to: Comm Manager>Settings>WLAN Settings>Power Mode and unchecking the "Auto turn off..." box. And yes, it does suck the battery like a vampire and makes the phone HOT! You can also adjust how long it will stay on for after LCD OFF.
Wifi question
Hi, before i drive myself mad, I am convinced that my phone uses gprs for data, not wifi. And my bills seem to agree with me.
When I use things like MyPhone, either connected to my PC or connected to my wifi at home, it seems to appear on my bill as a data charge, which would indicate that it is using the network??
Am I right, wrong or stupid? Any help greatly appreciated.
I saw several posts suggesting that leaving WiFi on where you have WiFi connection helps you to save the battery which I'm finding pretty strange. I thought WiFi actually drains battery faster then anything else. Are savings due to the fact that WiFi is more efficient then 3G or does it actually holds true that it saves battery?
All things being equal, Wi-Fi uses less power than 3G. Wi-Fi radio waves don't have to go as far, so they're easier to generate. When Wi-Fi is on, 3G is off, so you'll save power if you're actually transferring data.
A lot of programs will initiate data transfers by themselves when connected to Wi-Fi though, so perhaps that is why some will notice higher drain when Wi-Fi is on.
Also, if Wi-Fi is left on and you are on the move, your battery will drain since your phone is constantly searching for available networks.
Unless you've changed the settings, however, when your phone's screen it off it switches back to 3G to handle data.

This however, is untrue. At least for me. I run the leaked 2.2 and my WiFi is always on at home, my data connection is never active. I check this by dialing *3282# and hitting send.

When I have wifi switched on I lose around 5 to 10% an hour. With it off I lose 1 to 2%. I don't have anything set to sync differently via wifi. I only have a few apps that sync data and those are set to do so every 4 hours or so.
I have tried leaving it both on and off overnight to test this and every time I've left it off I woke up with a full battery. If I leave it on I have to charge again in the morning.
When I'm going out I turn wifi off so that my phone isn't constantly searching for signal.

In the Wi-Fi advanced settings (Hit Menu when in the normal wi-fi settings), there is a Wi-Fi Sleep Policy (which specifies when to switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data)
By default, my device was set to 'When screen turns off'. the other options were 'Never when plugged in' or 'Never', I switched mine to 'Never'. You should notice that when you turn your screen on, the wifi icon doesn't show up right away. Of course, I'm on 2.1, so this may be different in 2.2, but check it out.
For me, I get no cell signal in the building at work so I need to keep wifi on. If I turn it off my battery drains fast from the 3g radio constantly trying to lock on a signal.
It depends in the quality of your 3G connection, but all things equal I have seen that using WiFi instead of 3G does save battery, when the WiFi is connected of course. Anytime a radio is constantly searching for a signal or trying to hold a weak signal, power usage tends to go up.

Check out Y5 Battery Saver.
This app turns your wifi on/off based on the cell towers that you are on. You just connect to wifi, enable the app, and it remembers what cell towers you were on while you were in range of that wifi location. as soon as you are off of those towers, it turns off wifi. to add new wifi locations, just disable the app, connect to the hot spot, and re-enable the app.
This gives you the best of both worlds. you get to save battery while you are using wifi and when you are out of range it doesn't continually search for new wifi networks to connect to.

Whenever I turn my screen on, my wifi icon is right there. No delay in it showing up. I don't remember ever changing the sleep policy when I updated so I believe this is the default behavior for 2.2

+1 on Y5. There are a few other apps in the market that claim to do the same thing, but I think Y5 is by far the easiest to set up and works really well. Nice little utility so you don't have to keep remembering to turn off the wifi manually when you are out of range.
Now if I could just find a app that does the same for my bluetooth when it is near my car....but that I think is much harder to do without it actually polling.
I have an Atrix 2. It has been replaced twice by AT&T due to this problem. I have factory reset each phone and tried every battery mode, data saver, sleep policy and wifi channel.
The problem:
The wifi turns off by itself! not sleep, off! As in the checked box is unchecked. The phone does it during use and when not being used. The timing between instances is random. The wifi sometimes stays on for hours. Other times it wont last five minutes. I have 4 other wifi devices connected by wifi to my secured router.
Note: I travel across the country for work and the problem occurs at airports, hotels, mcdonalds, ect.
I have called Motorola and their only option is to send it to the with no replacement. I could use some help. I have been searching online and others with this problem dont persist, they simply state that unsecuring their router fixed the problem. That is not an option for me as the routers are not mine.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I recently noticed this problem started after I installed the ATT Smart Wi-FI app. Mine will connect then turn off, wait a second turn back on then I get the WIFI networks avail message and I check it and it's not connecting to the network til I tell it too then it will stay connected all day.
I"ve had my atrix 2 for about a little over a month. It's doing the same thing. Wifi will randomly shut off. I have to go into the settings to turn it back on. It will work fine for a little while then just shuts off again. Does anyone know if this seems to be hardware or software related. I've tried different apps and WiFi sleep settings to no avail. I really like the atrix but this is kind of annoying.
I have the same issue also, except I have top reboot my phone for wifi to work again.

i have the same problem, it's not my wifi connection, but the actual wifi setting turns off whenever i turn off my screen and yes, i've set the wifi sleep policy to "never", so that's not the problem. i've also tried "never when plugged in" and "when screen turns off" and i still get the same problem. i was thinking about going to at&t and asking them about it but decided to come here first.
(a white iphone 4 is looking better and better ) can anyone help?
I had this problem but after I disabled the power saver option under battery and data (set it back to performance) it went away and Wi-Fi works perfect.
Tried different battery saver settings as well, nothing changed.

As a power saving method, Windows Phone puts a connected Wi-Fi connection on standby when the phone is locked for more than a minute, so when you unlock your WP, it attempts to reconnect. The phone automatically reconnects and disconnects while its locked to check for notifications like email every 5-10 minutes or so. This reconnection for many is hit or miss, sometimes requiring you to go into settings to manually connect to Wi-Fi again. The only way to keep Wi-Fi connected is to connect the phone to a PC or wall outlet to charge.
Now, for some reason, a couple of weeks ago, the Wi-Fi on my Lumia 900 stayed connected even if the phone remained locked for hours and to my surprise, it had a minimal effect on battery life, I barely noticed any significant drain. It was wonderful!
Yesterday, it stopped this seemingly miraculous behavior and went back to its default power saving ways. I retraced ALL my steps and cant seem to recall doing anything specific to enable/disable this "feature".
So I was wondering if any of you experienced anything similar?
UPDATE: Its not a miracle, Skype was keeping the Wi-Fi on!
Come to think of it, I did make a Skype call just for the sake of trying out the front facing camera quality over the network.
Is anyone else having an issue with WiFi calling disconnecting itself, especially overnight? I'm using T-Mobile and when the WiFi calling will stay connected, it works as it should. But often it either won't connect to WiFi calling when reconnecting to my home network, or most often, by the time I get up in the morning, it has fallen off WiFi calling and either has "no service" or is trying to use the virtually non existent T-Mobile signal in my home. I see no indication that it's losing the WiFi connection overnight as it's not reconnecting when I wake the phone up in the morning. I've tried prioritizing the device through my Netgear R7000 router, updating the T-Mobile account settings including the e911 address, making sure my WiFi calling settings on the phone are on and set to WiFi preferred, and rebooting into Safe Mode to make sure a third party app wasn't somehow causing the issue. (The same issue occurred in Safe Mode)
Any ideas?
Thank you all for any assistance you can provide.
Wish I had an idea. All I can tell you is I share in your misery as Wi-Fi Calling is inconsistent for me as well. While it works most of the time, sometimes it’ll drop off for no apparent reason. When it does, I can usually force Wi-Fi Calling to reestablish by putting the phone in and out of airplane mode.
FWIW, I use high-end Wi-Fi gear at home and a custom-built firewall.
Not sure if this applies to you but take a look here:

It's been my experience that Google's implementation is poor at best for WiFi calling. Constant disconnects are common and sometimes reboots are the only thing that will get it working again. It's been this way since it's inception on the Nexus devices back in the day.
On other devices such as Samsung and OnePlus WiFi calling just works. But it's always been hit or miss on Nexus/Pixel deives.
Thank you all for chiming on the matter. It does make it a little less maddening to know it's not unique to my particular device or network setup as Google customer service would imply. Their solution was to have me send in my several week old "defective" device and get a refurbished one from them instead. Besides offering no explanation as to what kind of hardware fault could possibly cause this issue, I think it's ridiculous that someone making a warranty claim on a device less than a month old for a manufacturer defect would be sent a used replacement, particularly a device at this price point.
If it helps anyone, I've found if I switch the phone to airplane mode, and turn on WiFi while leaving airplane mode on, WiFi calling has been a bit more stable so far.
