[solved] Return to stock before upgrade - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
been looking around and found a lot of stuff to return to stock ROM and so I don't know what to really do...
here's the situation :
i'm running Kangvip B180 on NXT-L29 and would like to return to stock in order to upgrade to nougat the official way.
TWRP 3.0.2 installed
Bootloader unlocked
Rooted
could someone explain or point me to a good tutorial so I can go back to stock and then upgrade normally please ?
(I know what I need is explained somewhere, but all those posts about bricked devices and different methods to do something are just messing with my head and I don't want to screw up)
Any help appreciated

Hi guys,
I managed to go back to stock.
For those who are like me, here's what got me sweating but was ok
- fastboot flash stock recovery
- previously add an update.app in the dload folder on external SD (B180)
- rebooted with the 3 buttons method
- let it go through the update
- go to settings in order to get the updates available
- it went from B192, to B320 and finally B560
I didn't format anything till being on B560. Things were ****ing slow and crappy while doing the updates so don't worry
once I was on B560, I went down to the parameters and did a factory reset.
everything seems ok now, and I also solved my problem with the Gear S3 I had (not connecting to the mate)
Hope it helps anyone having these sort of problems

[Q] G920I

I have jailbroken many an iphone and ipod, and I have recently bought the S6. I am keen to root but it seems far more potentially troublsome, and far less straightforward, or maybe its just because I am learning for the first time.
I bought this in New Zealand from Spark. I assume it is locked?
Is the bootloader locked?
I couldnt find the matching build on Chainfire, Can this particular model be rooted?
Is there any guide to rooting? It seems all the information is spread out all over the place and no definitive guide and FAQ.
I can't even find the original stock rom.
Is rooting not similar to jailbreaking in the way it is done?
My specs:
Model: SM-G920I
Android: 5.0.2
Build: LRX22G.G920IDVU1AOD1
Thank you in advance.

I have the SM-G920I and it's rooted.
Rooting the G920I is apparently not as straightforward as others but still possible.
I had to flash TWRP via Odin, then flash the [BETA][2015.04.28] SuperSU v2.49 package via recovery.
Details when I get back from work, or some kind soul decides to help.
There is a stock image thread and a few stock roms floating around. Request / search lower down in that thread
Thanks, is it better to reset the s6 before rooting? For a clean root?
And about all the warnings about 'you do this at your own risk blah blah'. If you do everything properly how could you actually hard brick the device? If you do it properly the worst that should happen is a soft brick, in which case you just restore the phone and try again right?

Here is my experience, a fellow kiwi on Spark (with a 2D branded phone). I too have the 920I running on A0D1 via OTA.
It is unlikely Spark firmwares have locked bootloaders.
So long as you can get to download mode (holding volume down, home and the power button for up to 10 seconds), you can bring your phone back to life if something goes wrong . You will want a copy of Spark's firmware handy before you start, you can get it from here . Just in case.
Use the USB cable that come with your phone and make sure you have the drivers installed.
Any ways, first I flashed TWRP via Odin (through download mode Andy), flash was successful, however booting into recovery hung my phone. Managed to get back to download mode from there and flashed CF-Root for 920I. Boot loop.
Back to download mode and flashed CF-Root for 920F. Success, rooted and booted. Andy, if all you are looking for is root, avoiding the TWRP flash may work and going straight to CF-Root. Others have had issues with this, I'm not sure. I'd try the 920I first and if no good try the 920F. Again, as long as you can get to download mode, you can flash Sparks firmware through Odin to restore it to stock. Good luck and remember, attempting any of this WILL trip KNOX. If your using this as a company phone, you will run into issues. Can't imagine we will see Samsung pay any time soon in NZ.
For those interested in TWRP, after the root was obtained, my recovery was still busted. I flashed the TWRP image via Flashify and now I have also have TWRP. Good times.
Thanks mate, it all seems quite confusing, makes me want to go back to Iphone hahaha. I am not a dev, I just like the freedom to be able to do whatever I damn well please on my phone that I paid for.
This tutorial the way to go?

What the chap did in that video was exactly what my original plan was to root and install TWRP. Where I got stuck is the TWRP recovery hung so I couldn't flash SuperSU. Good run down of the basics of flashing with Odin though.
What I did after the recovery got stuck was return to download mode and flash CF-Root again through Odin (same process as in the video). The one for the 920I didn't actually work (boot loop), the 920F CF-Root worked fine though. Probably has something to do with these CF-Roots having been build on a older firmware as you noted in your OP. Then, once you have root, you can flash a custom recovery (such as TWRP) through Flashify (available on Play Store).
It certainly can be confusing with all the trial and error reported in these forums, this is largely because the devices are new. The Devs' will iron out the bugs in due course making the process much simpler. You could wait a few weeks and check back, or grab yourself a stock Spark firmware and have a crack. Flashing this trough Odin will return you to stock provided you can get your phone to download mode. No responsibility from my end.
Another thing, you will lose OTA updates. You will find newer firmwares here as they get released, to update its as simple as flashing them through Odin.
Yes the G920I listed on Chainfires site is for the AOC6 build, but I am on the AOD1 build.
Another thing, should i factory reset before rooting?

So were you able to install TWRP?
CF Root works for me with 920I version, but flashing TWRP forces it not to boot past the Samsung Logo.
Likewise with flashing a custom kernel also forces it not to boot past the Samsung Logo
Im on the C4 Australia build.. thinking about trying to flash a later 920I build to see if it'll help

Did someone figure this out? I have the Sm-920i and I get stuck at the Samsung splash screen after flashing twrp! So I have to Odin the cf-auto-root... I've tried flashify also... It won't work... Stuck @ Galaxy S6 screen what gives is it the SM-920I OR ME? I have had many Galaxy phones in the past but this one is pissing me off

Yeah flash the New Zealand 1D firmware and TWRP will work perfectly. But note that to get root, you will have to use cf-auto-root for the 920G Model
Best of luck

How come it has to be the New Zealand? I'm trying to backup my carriers crappy baked rom just in case I need to return... Is there anyway to back it up without a custom recovery but rooted? Because if I flash the new Zealand before making a backup and have to return they will see I have messed with the phone because they put a boot animation

Doesn't have to be the New Zealand one, I just used it since I'm in Australia. Any 920I firmware should work just make sure it's at least 1D. I only tried those firmwares, and always had success
My carrier is GCI wireless in Alaska, USA... No way to download there firmware...also is twrp it? No more cwm or philz recovery?

[Completed] [Q] Can I update android version after rooting, if so how ?

Today when I decided to update to the latest android (5.1.1) with rooted nexus 5. I rebooted
my phone and it started installing when suddenly a picture of the android robot with a red triangle sign on top appears and under it it says error so I restarted my phone by holding down the power button for several seconds and when I get in to my phone it says that I'm updated to 5.1. But what I understand that's correct so now I'm wondering how to deal with future updates because I can't afford to brick my phone and I thought I could just download OTA updates normally after root so my question is, can I normally install OTA updates, if not How?
[Edit]Later today I got the update to 5.1.1 message again and its really annoying and I want the update now so how do I get it?
Thanks for reading.
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. No, you can't use the OTA if your rooted with 5.x and above. To update you'll most likely need to flash the stock frimware. but you never let us know what your device is so i can't point you in the right direction.

Thank you for answering, I have a nexus 5 but I guess I´ll have to flash the stock firmware if there is no other way that isn´t too complicated.
All right. You'll want to see these, http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/info-nexus-5-ota-help-desk-t2523217 , http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/info-nexus-5-ota-help-desk-t2523217 It's possible to update by only flashing the system, boot, and radio images files with fastboot. You'll lose root but you can easily regain it by flashing supersu in your custom recovery.
Also don't forget there's a complete forum for the Nexus 5 here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5

I just spent 2 hours trying to flash the system but all i ended up with was a factory reset after following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701 so all i want to do now is just getting rid of root so I can update but the guides that i understand doesn´t work because when I tried to flash the hammerhead bootloader it said the my device requires another version. The i took the version that my nexus is in right now 5.1.0 and it appeared to be working so when it was finished I followed the guide and i wiped my system for about 5 minutes and then i chose reboot system from the recovery mode menu. And now im back at where i started.
(Edit) Now I´m installing SDK and following another guide online http://www.talkandroid.com/guides/b...-lollipop-factory-image-on-your-nexus-device/
It turns out all i had to do was to unlock my phone and then I installed 5.1.1 just fine
Yep, that's the first step. Glad you got it working. I'll close this thread.

Changing rom used smp900

Good day everyone, just got my note pro WiFi version? Already rooted and has custom kernel civz, tablet feels slow so I'm planning on changing rom maybe lineageOS but I'm concerned about the procedure because I'm not sure where I'm standing with every change done to this device, any help is appreciated I just don't want to brick this device trying to flash a new rom.
Currently it's running stock rom 5.0.2, 3.4.39 civz kernel and knox 2.3, if someone could provide a step by step on what should I do or check in this device to be on the safe road id really appreciate it. Btw I don't even know what recovery I have or how do I access it.
Bump
honestly most samsung devices are the same so id suggest getting the full stock system and using odin to revert to stock, from there start by getting a custom recovery and seeing what else you need to set up your rom
someone correct me if im wrong

someone told me that I just need to install twrp as it is and start flashing roms, dont know if this the best way to do it what do you think?
It could work just keep in mind that you don't know exactly what the previous owner did to it so if they installed a custom kernel you'll be stuck with that, could be a good thing could be a bad thing
You could always give it a shot and if it gives you problems go back to stock then TWRP then start rom-ing

Bricked device then partly completed the rebrand process.

Preface to all of this I rather impulsively decided to unlock my boot loader and root then load a new kernel. I did not make a backup and did not do research before trying to flash the new kernel.
I was attempting to flash a new kernel when I got error 1 wrong partition probably something simple that I messed up. I googled the issue and one solution was to wipe the device long story short I completely wiped the device bricking it because I am DUMB luckily there was a solution to this in this https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-rebrand-chinese-al00-mate9-to-t3554656 I was completing this process when the internet at my apartment went down. I was on step 6 (loading twrp)and had to leave for work before the internet was back up. I have a functioning phone so I am happy for now. However there are issues with it. The system keeps attempting to update and fails every time. (from L29C636B110 to L29C636B158) How do I fix this? Do I just need to go through the rest of the steps of the rebranding guide?
I am still interested in loading a custom rom as I am dumb with EMUI. What are considered the best roms? The rom section here seems to be mostly dead.
I have found open kirin but I need EMUI 8 How do I go about getting that?
Sorry if these all seem like dumb questions but I jumped in with very little research and have been attempting to fix that problem but I would also like to complete this process before I become complacent with my phone right now.
hi there.
Use this guide : https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-mate-9-flash-update-package-t3593108
Do all the steps,u can upgrade/downgrade to any Rom(same brand) with this method (both Nougat and oreo)
and after u did them,u will have a locked bootloader with a brand new rom !
from there,u r free to do anything u want with ur phone
Note:if u want to downgrade from Oreo to Noughat, Or update ur current Oreo firmware(if unlocked) u need to use this method :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-mate-9-flash-oreo-update-package-t3699522
Also u can find your phone firmware files here:

Honor 6x OTA update bln24 B365 to B376-Full

What I don't understand is there are all these talented people out there, finding ways to do virtually anything to their phones, but there doesn't seem to be any normal solution to receiving an OTA update on a phone that has twrp and rooted and just install the update. The phone is obviously getting the right update, it restarts to install and twrp fails with error 7. There are all kinds of people saying "unpack the zip, remove the asserts line, which doesn't work, at least for this update. Also try using the dload method, but really the ultimate question is, why hasn't a simple solution to just installing this ever have been found? Is the way that all this stuff works in the background just so difficult that a legit update cannot be installed because the stock recovery isn't present? and if so, why can't a way around this obstacle be found.
I would just like to install updates as they come down (i assume by now this phone is trying to work its way up to android 8, or oreo) but i am stuck just ignoring it. I don't mind a little messing around to get things to work, i just haven't found any that actually do and don't involve wiping out the phone and installing everything again. Any answers are appreciated.
Dude. There is a way. I had the same thought before I pressed search on XDA and spent the next 3 hours digging in every Honor Forum and XDA and here is my tried and tested solution.
Make sure you have TWRP installed.
Download Firmware Finder from the Play store, enter your Model Number and download latest FULL-OTA for it. Only Full OTA will work.
Search for and Download Hurupdater from thread. Specifically Hurupdater 0.4
Rename files as specified in Hurupdater thread. Transfer them and Hurupdater to same folder on SD card. i.e all 4 files need to be in same folder. Now boot into TWRP and select Only Hurupdater to flash. Press Volume down when promoted and sit back for a few minutes. Once it completes wipe Dalvik Cache and Reboot.
Now you are on the firmware you wanted without factory reset.
A few things to note.
Your device shouldn't be Rooted. Unrooted first.
First boot will take some time approx. 10 mins. Don't Panic
After update TWRP will be overwritten. Reflash TWRP.
Don't use this to go from EMUI 5 to 8. You will brick your phone
In Firmware Finder there will be three Zips. Rename them as follows:
Update.zip -> don't rename
Update_data_full_public.zip -> update_data_public.zip
Last one will be region specific with your model number. Rename it to update_all_hw.zip
Good Luck.

Ok, I'll give it a shot and respond later. Like I said, I don't mind jumping through a few hoops. One question, how can I make sure whatever latest full OTA is doesn't have emui 8 in it? will that firmware finder point out what is in it?
If it has EMUI 8 it will be mentioned in the title of the firmware like 8.0.0.536 or something. Currently only India and China have EMUI 8. However to be safe I advise you to go to system update and Download & install. It will Download firmware and ask you to install. Hit cancel and using file explorer go to internal storage. There will be a folder named HwOUC. You will find three firmwares archives there. Use them. Make sure they are Full OTA by checking the size of archives. Update.zip should be at least greater than 1 GB

Yeah, I looked in the changelog, and it isn't emui 8. Plus it not being available in the USA kinda answers that as well I was going to ask if i could just use the files that are sitting in my HWOUC folder already, but you beat me to that question. so i should just move that over to my sd card into a temp folder along with that hurupdater app?

Well, it was too late anyway, so the OTA files that were existing on my phone for B376 did flash fine, but now I lost TWRP and root. Beyond that, B377 tried to install today, and even though now my phone is back to factory (i assume, since those changes had been made) Now it fails on the next update of B377 on the EMUI recovery screen and tells me "software install failed get help from http://www.emui.com/emotiondownload.......
Am I stuck now using your method above for each and every OTA update that comes through? If so, how would that be possible since I am unable to get TWRP back onto my phone.

Just reflash TWRP. It should flash fine. And yes, if you plan on using EMUI 8 the above mentioned method is the only way to update. Normally I would recommend you to Ditch EMUI and install a custom ROM. There are a lot of great ROM available for our device. If you want to flash one I will be more than happy to guide you.

Well, I am still on EMUI 5 right now. I was kind of hoping not to go through flashing a custom ROM since I went through doing that on my LG nexus 5, and yes, it was great once it worked, it was a real pain to get to that working part. I was hoping the standard OTAs were going to get me up to android 8, and then just be happy with that. So I am unsure how I can flash TWRP again since my bootloader is locked again. Basically if I am going to be stuck wiping my phone out again, then I suppose I would be inclined to going the route of a custom ROM. So I guess it is just a matter of if I can get twrp on here again without wiping my phone again (unlocking the bootloader)
Um, no. You can't get TWRP with a locked bootloader. And also you can't go from EMUI 5 to 8 via Hurupdater. In Oreo partition table changes and Hurupdater can't flash that. So you will have to upgrade to Oreo manually. You can easily do that. It will take an hour to get to Oreo as well as flashing a ROM.

so in essence what you are saying is that I can't go any further at all right now without wiping my phone again so i can unlock the bootloader? As of right now, I don't even know Huawei is going to release Oreo for this phone OTA, and even if it does, right now I can't get it. So since you have been so helpful (and very much appreciate it btw) what do you think is my best course? I don't think unlocking the bootloader will be an issue. i have the code saved somewhere around here. I wasn't all dead set on EMUI, it was just kind of nice staying somewhat in the realm of legit. And no, I have no qualms about straying outside of that. I just didn't want the nightmare I had with my nexus occurring again and not having use of my phone as a phone for the longest time. I'll await to see what you think I should do. Thanx again
Well. Flashing is easy. I'd recommend you to unlock your bootloader. And after that download HWOTA from thread. I will provide link. Next I want you to decide that wether you want stock EMUI 8 or want to flash a custom ROM. Depending on that I would advise you to either get Indian or Chinese EMUI 8. Indian is good for daily driver. Chinese for flashing custom ROM

Looks like I will be stuck either way with wiping the phone, so I may as well go the custom ROM road. Don't really need to bother with the HwOTA then I wouldn't think. Unless I am missing something here. So who are the players for custom these days? still cyanogen? I saw on a search thay had android oreo 8.1. I used their custom ROM on my nexus as well. I most likely won't be getting to this now until tomorrow. I'll backup my phone...oh ****, titanium isn't gonna work. no more root....ok, i'll unlock bootloader, get twrp and root back on my phone and backup so definitely not until tomorrow. Only question for tonight is do I still need that HwOTA? I think I am a bit confused on what exactly I am trying to achieve. is it EMUI 8 with custom ROM of android 8? or nixing EMUI completely. Pardon my ignorance, but I really am just a bit hazy here on how this all works. all this for some stupid security update only because I thought it would open my phone back up to getting the OTAs and Huawei would release 8.....
Well. Since you are on EMUI 5 you will have to use HWOTA once you get to EMUI 8 as all custom ROMs require that. It also adds Project Treble support. So you will be flashing EMUI 8 once. After that, it's your choice. Either stay in stock or take the custom road. In terms of stock, there are currently 3 Android 8.1 ROMs available by OpenKirin and one Pie ROM available by Askuccio Droid. OpenKirin ROMs have stock camera in built while Pie ROM is.... Well Android Pie. All of them are smooth, have tweaks and great battery life and are infinitely better than stock EMUI 8. If you want the stock road, upgrade to BLN-AL20. That's the Chinese EMUI 8 and better for custom ROM. If you want stock EMUI 8 then go for BLN-L22.

Ok, I must just be really tired. Is there not some way for me to just get back to whatever is causing this next OTA to stop? Meaning even though it is just some stupid piddly update, just get my phone to accept that without going totally overboard and what seems to be a bit above what I know how to do. That way the OTAs will just come at their own pace and I'll live with not having all the bells and whistles. Just going back to stock sort of thing. That is kind of what I thought was going to happen when you so very graciously and successfully got that last update to work. That way I can try something new and just be patient until Huawei forces out android 8 on their own.

So you want to remain on stock EMUI 5? Well it's your choice. Anyway check a few things.
1. Is your bootloader locked? Do you get a warning screen when phone turns on?
2. Do you have TWRP recovery? Or stock?
3. Lastly is your phone rooted?
If your bootloader is locked, you have stock recovery and your phone isn't rooted, then congratulations. You are on stock EMUI 5 and you should receive OTA normally. Or at least I hope so.

2. Do you have TWRP recovery? Or stock? NO, I don't have TWRP anymore
3. Lastly is your phone rooted? No, I removed root to perform theinstall of B376-FULL and was obviously not able to root it after due to the previous

Can you tell me what is it that you're trying to do and what's failing. I can't tell much from this.

I am not trying to do anything. The phone has received an OTA update, B377, and after it downloads, it says install. click to restart now. After restarting to do the install (the everyday, normal OTA update method, nothing fancy) then it goes to that error. Only option from that black EMUI screen is "reboot now"
