Sprint S5 OC Kernel - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For the pass few days I've been looking for a compatible Kernel to OC my S5 (Sprint SM-G900P). I've found some kernels but I'm unsure if they're compatible with Marshmallow 6.0.1 which I updated OTA. I'm currently rooted and have TWRP Recovery installed. Also if it helos, the last update I instakked/ am currently on is G900PVPS3CQB3.

first off, i dont recommend ever instakking anything, its just uncouth secondly, are you running stock touchwiz? if so, i havent seen any custom kernels for anything TW 6.0.1 and up.

Yea im runnubg stock touchwiz Marshmallow 6.0.1. I was thinking ill be able to flash any kernel for the G900P but last android i did that to ended up bricked so i second thought that idea. Also other varients of the S5 already have OC kernels so how come this one doesn't ? ?

This variant of the S5 does have OC kernels, just not for touchwiz on 6.0.1 because development pretty much stopped for TW based ROMs after MOAR for the most part. Pretty forgotten phone now as the world has moved on with sprints unlocking policy and ineptitude. If you want to go AOSP, youre not short for choice tho. AOSP seems to be the preferred flavor for the G900P (probably easier to code), but AOSP fallsh short in a few key areas that makes me want to see more current TW ROMs available for it, but if i wasnt using this phone still, id not be in this area of XDA either. The problem that youre running in to is that TW based ROMs need TW based kernels.

i did find this kernel for 6.0.1 TW ROMs, if that helps

[Q] I have not yet accepted the OTA on my rooted 4.1.2. What should I do next?

I have a rooted SCH-I535 running stock 4.1.2. I am still getting OTA update notices every five minutes and it is time to move on to 4.3. What has has been your experience out there? My goals are:
1) to keep root, and
2) run 4.3 stock and have the option to play around with 4.4 ROMs.
Should I OTA to 4.3 then root? From what I have read, it may not be possible to flash custom ROM's this way. Can I get 4.3 ROMs and 4.4 ROMs another way? What is the best method from a rooted 4.1.2?
Thanks from an noob.

If you take the OTA 4.3 update your boot loader will be locked and you will not be able to do anything that you said. If you have Titanium Pro use it to freeze "SDM 1.0" that will stop the update nags. If you want to go to 4. 3 you will find a rooted, stock 4.3 rom with an unlocked boot loader developed and posted by "Old&Slow" at this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591895

Huge thanks for the SDM freeze tip. That was my primary nuisance. It worked perfectly.I followed the link you provided. The ROM seems to be a bit buggy. Are a lot of you staying with 4.1.2? I like the idea of cloud printing and a few other updates, but I don't know if I want to risk my flash going off every time my phone rings. Can anyone recommend a good 4.4 ROM that can be flashed from my current state?
In general, the 4.4 ROM's are going to be a little more "buggy" when compared to a custom TW 4.3 ROM. From my understanding of this it's due to the devs being able to use the official OTA as a base and just customize it. I've ran both and prefer the custom TW 4.3 ROMs. To each their own however.
If you want to stay as close as OTA as possible, scrosler has posted a 4.3 ROM on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III Android Development thread. It's titled, "[ROM][1/27/14] - Stock Rooted Knoxless - VRUCML1 - Android 4.3 - Stay Classy XDA!". I'd link you but don't have that ability yet on the forum.

Hey just you know 4.4 ROMS do not use the OTA as a base. The OTA is 4.3 first of all. 2nd its Touchwiz. 4.4 ROMs are AOSP only. Not Touchwiz. Now 4.4 ROMs just like any AOSP ROM use the Stock AOSP source code from Google as a Base (stock AOSP like on a Nexus) and then merge in device specific proprietary drivers after. They are buggy at first especially the modem/radio because we have to reverse engineer those proprietary drivers from Samsung to work on AOSP. Blame Samsung for not releasing source code for the modem.

That's what I meant. Sorry, wasn't clear in my post. I wasn't saying 4.4 ROMs use the OTA. I understand how they are built on AOSP. I was trying to say 4.3 ROMs have less problems (usually) because the devs have the OTAs to work with. For the most part anyway (I've read about the kernel problems on VZ 4.3). Thanks for clarifying.

[Q] Stock 4.4.4

Hi all, it's been awhile since I've done any ROM flashing (older phones) so I'm a little rusty now. I'm currently root, unlocked, CWM with stock 4.1.2 (never flashed any custom ROMs on my S3). I'm wanting to get closet to stock 4.4.4 as possible. Can I use the Nexus 5 4.4.4 firmware on my phone? Or will it not work due to it being GSM?
If this won't work, can anyone recommend a ROM of the latest android version that is closest to stock as possible? Thanks.
I wouldn't recommend flashing anything on an s3 that isn't made for s3, unless of course you happen to like buying new phones to replace a brick that you made.

THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Wrong firmware = BRICK
Before you flash ANYTHING read, read, read,...then read some more.

The current CyanogenMod 11 nightly builds for the "d2lte" device are mostly-stock Android v4.4.4 and very solid on this device.
Here's the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2558946

Couldn't even be bothered to read the first few posts of the Safestrap thread?
You can run AOSP roms like CM and Omni, but nothing based on Lollipop

If they are on a locked bootloader no custom roms can be installed at all

[Q] Galaxy S3 - I535 - Custom ROMs?

Since I'm running 4.4.2 Kitkat on my GS3, I'm locked out of the bootloader, however, I know that there are a few custom ROMs I can install on my phone that are based on Touchwiz.
Can anyone either provide a link to those ROMs on here, or post an external link to them? I've been looking around, and I can't find much.

No problem. As long as your kernel date is before June 2014 (although it may be July 2014) you can root with towelroot and run safestrap with the few touchwiz based roms.
Here's what you need

rom for galaxy s5 sm-g900a at&t

Good day
Previously I had a Galaxy S3 and I was using CyanogenMod – Loved it!
I just always preferred a phone that was clean and lean without all the bloatware.
Now I’m with the S5 and there is possibly an option available for a custom ROM for my phone?
Currently –
SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 SM-G900A AT&T
Lollipop 5.0 G900AUCU3BOC4
So far as I can tell this phone could not be rooted.
Until a few days ago I got a notice in an email that it was now available.
I was on their mailing list if something should become available.
oneclickroot
I know you can’t go backward LP 5.0 – KK 4.4.
One can only go forward, LP 5.0 - LP 5.1 or LP 5.0 – Marshmallow.
However most of what I have seen out there for my phone has been LP 5.0.
At present I’m looking at these unless someone can suggest something else.
TMS5 3.0 ROM LP5.0
Twi5ted lollipop V7 LP 5.0
Alliance V8 ROM LP5.0
My question is, can I go from LP 5.0 (Stock) to LP 5.0 (Custom)?

If you've got the locked bootloader then you're out of luck rooting and flashing TWRP/Cyanogenmod.

Actually the phone is rooted now. Right after I posted this I used Kingroot king481.apk and Titanium Backup is installed and Root Check confirmed its now rooted. Although I have not tried the Bootloader...... With my luck that is another issue..... I wonder if I should try the first step with the Bootloader and see if SAFESTRAP or TWRP can install?

Safestrap is no longer supported and with locked bootloader you're not gonna get TWRP to work.

HI all, I'm new here and this Is my first post (question), Is There any solution to this issue (sm-g900a not taking custom recovery)?, I need (really want) to install android pie and magisk on my att g9005a,and most of the posts (including this one) are several years old.
Really appreciate an an answer, even if its still, "sorry, still out of luck",
Also, is this a good place for this, or should i start a new thread?
Thanks.

Your device is an AT&T variant, your device has a locked bootloader, you can't install custom recovery with a locked bootloader. The bootloader on your device can not be unlocked, you will never be able to install custom recovery on your device. If you want custom recovery you will have to get another device because you will never be able to use custom recovery on the device that you already have.
