MOAR new problem not seen before - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

Been using this for months and is great but tonight I used the hotspot and (Cisco Umbrella) stared blocking a lot of my sites because of content...(weapons category etc forums etc.) On tether it did not block nor on home wifi so is this Sprint?
Any body had this problem? Just started a today I believe. thanks

I have used tethering here with no filtering from sprint. I haven't used cisco umbrella before, but it is for online security, so I would say if you are having a problem with filtering websites then the problem would be from cisco.

Major Security Flaw Found In Android Phones

Worth reading http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/16/android_impersonation_attacks/
and perhaps following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086878 (ok -- maybe not -- that thread is pretty useless)
In brief:
The weakness stems from the improper implementation of an authentication protocol known as ClientLogin in Android versions 2.3.3 and earlier, the researchers from Germany's University of Ulm said. After a user submits valid credentials for Google Calendar, Contacts and possibly other accounts, the programming interface retrieves an authentication token that is sent in cleartext. Because the authToken can be used for up to 14 days in any subsequent requests on the service, attackers can exploit them to gain unauthorized access to accounts.
Announced today, apparently there will be silent OTA patches for Contacts and Calendar.
that is crazy!!!!
this made me feel a little at ease, just a little.
The attacks can only be carried out when the devices are using unsecured networks, such as those offered at Wi-Fi hotspots.

not sure what else to say about it.
Bloggers and media like to hype this stuff up.
Bottom line is this. Don't connect to a public wifi you don't trust, and always log in via SSL.
The issue here stems from using public wifi that allows people to sniff your traffic.
For instance:
You walk into starbucks, I'm already there and with my phone I create a mobile hotspot, I call it "StarbucksWifi" for the SSID. You're none the wiser and you connect with your phone (OR with your laptop, it's not just your phone but the media didn't share that).
I turn on Shark Mobile (Wireshark) and start capturing all those lovely packets. I then dissect them later to see your login info etc.
Again, don't connect to public wifi you don't trust or are unsure about. Starbucks uses ATT for hotspots and the wifi name is always ATT from what I remember.

Not a real issue unless you're one to use unsecured wifi networks.

Thanks.
I love hearing about this kind of stuff. It's good to keep current....now I know why they have that accept conditions page at wifi places like starbucks and mcdonalds. You couldn't create that with your hot spot...or could someone

thanks for the info fellas. I rarely connect to wifi spots when Im out and about. Actually, the only time I do is when im home or at work. Looks like im good.
While "always log in via SSL" is a great suggestion, the Google services aren't going to go over a secure channel (unless you have VPN enabled).
The same warning should apply if you aren't using WPA2 -- the older WEP (and WPA) is still common on many "secure" wireless connections, especially home units, and takes not more than a few minutes to crack with widely available tools.
http://www.google.com/search?q=wep+crack
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Protected_Access
WPA2 has replaced WPA; WPA2 requires testing and certification by the Wi-Fi Alliance. WPA2 implements the mandatory elements of 802.11i. In particular, it introduces CCMP, a new AES-based encryption mode with strong security. Certification began in September, 2004; from March 13, 2006, WPA2 certification is mandatory for all new devices to bear the Wi-Fi trademark.
This is what I was asking about in another post. I like to vacation where I have 0-1 bars on the phone, and motel wifi is available. I would like my pet/house sitting service to be able to call me when I'm away.
Also kid moved to England. We use Skype, Skype on Android is wifi only.
Mostly do use home WPA encrypted, but there should be some kind of safety for those who do need the service. Do not use the phone for personal stuff like banking, etc. even on a network.
And there are areas here in the west where there is no service for any carrier. Canyons are not conducive to line of site.
SGS4G does have wifi calling built in.

[Q] Is Verizon blocking traffic via hotspot?

So here's the strange thing I've noticed recently while connected to my GS3 via hotspot, youtube videos don't play on devices connected to the specific hotspot. I'm using CleanRom 7, and I've only noticed this recently. It's like the video will not load, but the site itself works entirely. I don't have this issue with various Wi-Fi networks, it is specific to my phone and devices connected to my phone.
YouTube App does work on my phone regardless if hotspot is on.
YouTube does work on multiple networks on multiple devices, but via hotspot through my GS3.
No app blocking or redirecting incoming and outgoing traffic. (unless that's happening and I'm unaware of any changes)
I'm just curious if anyone is having this issue as well? Or with any other video format online. I've checked whether or not it's just the flash player or HTML5 format was the issue, but again the videos play regardless on networks outside of my hotspot. I've also been to sites where flash video works flawlessly via my hotspot. So, it's really just YouTube.
verizon hotspot note 2 youtube not working

I also experienced the same thing. Been looking around and they are blocking youtube. Apparently they are blocking youtube, netflix and various other streaming sites on any device connected to the hotspot. I have a grandfathered unlimited account with verizon so its people like me they are mainly aiming this at. You can try a VPN from what im told by a buddy at verizon, but its hard to find a good VPN off the playstore that doesn't have nefarious programming. I'm sure you could find something here on XDA about VPNs. Sorry im not anymore help but im a newb. Lol
Also it might have something to do with when they throttle down the data speed. Might be automatic until your data plan renews each month.?

I finally found a vpn I like a lot. Private internet access, unlimited bandwith for 40 something a year. Speeds are good and it has a play store app that works pretty good now (the old app was just a shortcut to the default android vpn settings). I think its 10$ or something for month to month payment so if you try it out and like it don't forget to buy the year and save a good chunk of change.
Thanks I think its time for this. ive always heard of VPN's but never really understood the need. If this works "thanks Verizon for opening my eyes" lol
What is the name of the VPN?

I think he mentioned "VPN by Private internet access", search the market for "Private internet access" and you should find it.
I just signed up for the Privateinternetaccess.com vpn service. It works great. Got my youtube videos and my netflixs back. Use the windows program on the computer that connects to the hotspot. And the android app on the device that is connected to the hotspot. Do not use the vpn on the device projecting the hotspot. I could get my desktop to contect to the hotspot but no internet. Maybe im doimg something wrong but the other ways work great!! Thanks for this topic!!!!!

I have problems connecting on windows 8 but it will connect. 7 and xp connect without any problems. I think it is a setting in the firewall. If you have a router that supports VPN you can set it up there and tunel all your traffic.

PIA, Hidemyass, airvpn etc will all work
Alternatively, you can spend a one time fee of $8 for the foxfi key. I use it to access my native hotspot on stock rooted 4.3 without any issues.

Impossible network tethering block

So I am using an LTE connection which is extremely fast (maximum p2p speed has been 4mb/s) however my network blocks the data from being tethered and if it detects it, the internet on the phone itself does not work until the phone is restarted. I have done a lot of research and downloaded a bunch of apps for tethering including ones which do not require roots and ones which do and nothing works. I have tried to change the user agent in my browser and that has not worked either.
I am using an S4 with a stock google edition rom, I know they are blocking the tether because the internet works fine on the phone until a computer connects to the phones access point.
what should I do? None of the recommended apps worked for me...
also thought i should mention; p2p traffic is also blocked but works when using a VPN on the phone, VPN does not help the tethering situation though.
Any ideas? getting really desperate now

Galaxy S6 Wifi Hotspot cant be found on other devices

Hello everyone,
Longtime Samsung user here and believer in unlocked phones. Recently purchased an unlocked Galaxy S6 to use on Tmobile. I have it setup and working (data, wifi, and calling works flawlessly). However I've encountered an odd issue, I can start the Wifi hotspot, however no other devices can see the SSID being broadcast to connect to the network.
I did several hours of research, even found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...e-hotspot-active-connect-wi-fi-t3098933/page2 ; which pointed me to a couple of solutions I tried:
Enable/disable Wifi power saving
Make sure only approved devices isn't checked
Manually select a Wifi channel (tried auto and manually selecting channels to no avail).
The phone allows me to activate the tethering, and I do have a Tmobile plan that allows tethering, I just can't find the phones SSID on any other device during the wifi network scan (tried multiple other phones/tablets/computers).
This functionality allows me to work remotely on the road, so I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you all may have. Unfortunately due to the BYOD policies in place at my organization (and the root check in place in our apps) rooting is not a problem.
I am open to a third party tethering solution if one exists for this phone on T-mobile. Haven't been part of that scene in some time, so I'm unsure what apps are reputable, so any recommendations there are appreciated.
Wanted to add that the phone was purchased new from Amazon and has android version 5.1.1

Using Private DNS gets periodic connection error? AdGuard and ControlD

I just want simple DNS ad blocking without having to install an app on my Android phone. I tried the free DNS from ControlD and I noticed when using my phone several times a day I get a notification that Internet isn't available because "Private DNS cannote be accessed." I figured it may be unreliability at ControlD so swithced the DNS over to AdGuard's. Get the same error three or four times a day. When it happens, phone switches to cell data for about 30 seconds then goes back to wifi and all is fine.
I'm using their DNS just on my phone, not on my home wifi router. Although that my be kind of cool to do as any guest connecting to my wifi wouldn't have ads. But I prefer to leave the router using the ISP's DNS.
We and many others are in the same boat. I had this on different phones, with android 12 and 13.
Tried everything. Probably the problem is my Asus router+aimesh configuration with wifi 6. I tried everything in the router but nothing has fixed the problem.
Hard to understand if the problem is the router chip or a bug not fixed in last android versions or a bug in many dns providers.
Web is FULL of this PrivateDNS bug/problem but no one solution atm.

I've not had problems using dns.adguard.com for the past month. I did discover you need to turn private DNS off when using wifi on an airplane.

Yes, with that free public adguard dns i have no issue. Someone with samsung phone for example instead had it and fixed it with the public adguard family dns.
With personal adguard payed dns i have still always that "connection problem". Same problem also with NextDNS. Tried everything but nothing managed to solve this problem.
Same connection problem with ControlD. So weird...
It's really hard to understand what is THE really problem.
