Hey
Can you confirm if Phab 2 Pro has any loose parts somewhere in it's upper part making sounds similar to something light and plastic bouncing inside a camera? It can be heard if you shake the phone lightly. I wonder if my device is defective with for example some lens parts shaking inside and affecting Tango or camera.

No. It's defect. You have to complaint your device.
Its the OIS.. Some of the lens components float for image stabilization.. To make sure turn on the camaera and shake if it lessens the sound then you are fine..
I check it out. You are right. ?

I've recorded it using external high gain mic:

However it doesn't change when camera or tango app is on.

I think it's normal. I didn't know before

At first i thought something was broken inside my brand now S6 but apparently its the OIS of the camera. When the camera is inactive the OIS is loose and when shaking the phone fast it makes a (clicking) sound. When I activated the camera the sound was gone no matter how hard I would shake the phone. I hope thats how the phone is made and I don't have a defective unit. Please let me know if anyone else has noticed that. Thanks.
As far as I know, every phone with OIS will make this noise to a certain extent. On some phones it is more easy to hear, on others its harder, but it is still there nevertheless. No need to worry about it.

Thanks man. I had a Note 4 before and never noticed that.
All phones make noise if you shake it even if it doesnt have OIS its usually the autofocusing mechanism.
That's normal for cameras with the OIS. I'm not sure how they exactly work in smartphones, but my Olympus OM-D for example uses a magnetic field for the 5-axis sensor stabilization. So once the camera is turned on the sensor is basically floating in a magnetic field, and when it's turned off it's "loose" - that's where the noise comes from. Nothing to worry about, it's normal.

Yep, I just tested my S6, and if the camera is on, there is definitely less clicking sounds coming from the camera when you shake it.
iPhone 6+ does not makes that sound.

In daily usage you usually don't really notice it. It's not that loud and takes a bit of shaking. Otherwise they might keep the VCM powered up all the time, but that would be a waste of battery life.
I was freaking out.. Thank you!

I have a s6 that only makes noises when camera app is open.
A sound of moving parts like and sale camera focusing.
If the app is open if if I tap near the camera I can always reproduce the sound.
What could it be. I have an defective phone?
Help

Mine does the clicking sound when off and sometimes when you open the camera app, the OIS mechanism start to shake until obtains focus, kinda scary, I think is showing signs of something malfunctioning .
Yes that is what happens to me.
It's not a good sign. I don't know what to do and if it is normal

Yes. I am getting the clicking sound when opening the cam app as well. Camera works fine afterwards though. How can it be fixed?
This is normal. It's the OIS elements of the rear camera shaking around when electronically deactivated.
This is not a fault and is part of the normal operation of a mobile OIS camera.
Once activated it shouldn't audibly shake. It's operation is similar to most stabilization gimbles when unpowered.

Thanks for the reply but is it also normal that the OIS mechanism shakes until focus is obtained after starting the camera app?
The clicking sound is also present in my S6 with the camera app off. Turning it on romoves the clicking sound.

Normal, all OIS systems (even those in my $3000 lenses) rattle a little when not powered (and make a faint noise when operating in the case of the lenses).
I'm also experiencing the OIS shake upon opening the camera app on my s6. It's done it twice today - I open the camera app and the image shows blurry as it struggles to focus, the lens shakes quite vigorously, making the phone vibrate, it makes a loud clicking noise and the image shakes, firstly for around 10 secs, then around 5 secs the 2nd time it happened. It's happened in both Samsung camera and Snapchat.
Running French OTA 5.1.1 on S6.
Anyone else having this? Is this usual behaviour or a sign of a defective unit?
Anyone else having this issue? I'm getting the OIS shake nearly every time I open the camera app now...

The so called distortion there is when trying to take a photo with the XZP camera is common to all smartphone cameras. And this distortion disappears when entering Video mode. Test it for yourself using this target:
https://static.bhphotovideo.com/explora/sites/default/files/bandh-test-target.jpg
You don't even need to take a picture. Just check the target first in Photo Mode, and then switch to Video Camera. You will see that in Video mode, there are no distortions.
Obviously this is not a lens issue but a software issue. They could fix it with an update.
I don't think you're aware that there are more than one lens in a camera lol

Ummmm, I am no camera expert (as you no doubt are) but with a single lens camera ALL images are going through all the lenses (if there is more than one) as they are stacked one on top of the other! It's not as if one lens is moving out of the way while another one goes to work. LOL

Exactly.
@nomailx this has been discussed at lenght in several forums. Partially, you are right. A fix is possible with a software update but life is never black or white, sdadly.
The tech that is fixing distortion in Video mode is Sony's magical stabilization algorithm(parts of it anyway). For a huge variety of reasons, it is off during picture mode.
I am fairly confident they were aware of the minor (yep, we've seen much worse on smartphones) distortion and decided to go with it, as fixing that would take away from somth else. Balance in the universe and all that..
If they decide to tweak or not, we are yet to see.
Hi all
Does the latest firmware fix this problem?

Actually, it would be more accurate to say that it is a lens issue, but it's a lens issue that most smartphone lenses will have.
Normally it should be corrected for in software with a profile of the specific distortion of the lens, but for some reason Sony haven't done this.

This is ...
... correct.
But only Sony would put the best wide lens camera without a proper software. Cause they're too busy to ... Actually I have no idea about what they're doing. Even they don't know what they're doing.
And maybe you may have heard the Actual XZ Premium's Speakers capabilities when listening to a "not so common" HD Audio file and wonder: Wait what? The Speakers can sound like that? But then why they don't sound like that with 95% of the media and Apps. Again, Sony's failing on the software department.
Does anyone else note 20 U camera rattle at random time? Even when you're not in the camera app, like I'm browsing around and I would hear the camera rattle or switch mode. It would randomy make the same sound when you switch from photo to video.
But with camera on in multi window mode it doesn't do the random rattle sound any more when browsing around. Not sure if my camera or note 20 U camera is loose inside the phone or is this happening for others?

Random Rattle???? Just shake the thing it is loud as can be.
so i believe its normal, MKBHD mentioned it in his review video. as to why this is normal or a thing (which mine does) im not sure.
yep totally normal and to be expected due to the design of the camera.
I don't have one but my note 10+ had a little bit of one in camera. Not really helpful sorry

It is because of zoom lens and optical stabilization of cameras
It's a feature by accident apparently...
Instead of having a landing zone i.e. parking feature so it doesn't rattle...
It's loose so everyone shakes them and the subsequent rattling cleans off the dust and other FOD from the elements.
Of course if the sensor gets dirty...
Another fetish! Let's shake our phones like crazy!
So to solve another problem (not enough battery), make a dummy S pen with a neodymium magnet that slides within. All that shaking moves the magnet in and out of the charging coil and the resulting EMF can charge the battery. Like a shake light, five minutes of shaking gives you an extra 10 minutes of talk time! LOL

Yeah I mean the rattle is fine because of the system.
But say I pick up my phone on my table and use it. It would make the same sound from changing to photo to video 2 second later when I use the phone. Is that actually normal? Because any slight movement it would make that sound.
Heres a video for example. Does anyone else do this?

Similar to my mirrorless camera with IBIS (Internal Body Image Stabilization). It's the lens shake rather than sensor shake. So I always remind my friends and even myself who have phone with OIS camera, don't shake or knock on the phone purposely (some people like to fidget with phone). Just imaging knocking the lens on table, it hurts.
It's the periscope lens that makes the sound. Zak shows this in his JerryRig teardown of the S20 Ultra. It has the same periscope camera lens.

Hi, I recently got my Xperia 5 iii and I noticed whenever an app accesses the camera there's an audible 'click' and I can feel a small vibration in the device.
Does this happen on anyone else's device? Or I got a dud? Pictures seem fine switching between the lenses work.
At 1st I thought it was the magnetic system in the zoom lenses but I don't notice this when switching between the zoom lenses.

I can hear clicking in the cameras when moving with phone quickly or shaking it. Even if camera app is not open. Does someone have that also? I assume it is optical stabilization rattling but not sure. Taking pictures seems ok. Although I notice very little shaking when taking pictures with 70/105 lens. Can someone confirm on your device? Thx.

Everyone has this
On mine, there is also faint electronics-sounding noise coming from the earpiece speaker (when the camera app is open, and the main camera is selected). I assume the speaker amplifier is picking up interference from the camera electronics.
Hi! Xperia 1 III owner here. It's normal that you here those clicks, it makes noises because of the moving lenses in the periscope cam. When you open the camera it move the lenses in place. And when you shake the device it clicks because you're retarded and shake it unpurposely the lenses are moving because of the kinetic forces
normal....no worries
Hi all,
When I shake my 12S Ultra, it makes a clacking sound like something is loose inside the phone.
Is that normal or is my device damaged?
Thanks!
probably your cameras are shaking...
lenses with OIS move around when they are unpowered becasue they stay stable with electromagnet.
open your camera app then try shaking

It happens as well on my phone. My guess is that because the sensor is big it rattles more than other phones with ois. I could be wrong though.
