I recently purchased an Inspire 4G off of Craigslist, and simply put in my iPhone 4 SIM card. Now - I still have the original $30/month unlimited data plan from my first iPhone 3G.
Tonight I received a text/email combo from AT&T letting me know that I should come in and upgrade my plan to a 4G plan. There was no threat of auto-updating my plan, but both the email and text said I needed to come in.
Has anyone else gotten this email? Will they upgrade/change my plan? Thanks!

There is an unlimited "4G" data plan available. You need to find the right rep that knows what they are doing in order to give you the proper unlimited plan for 4G. I had the 3GS with the unlimited data plan and it took a few tries till the got it right to put me under a 4G plan.
Well - I'm not even in a 4G area, so even if I had it - I wouldn't see any better speeds, correct? Also - how much more per month is it?

There really is no difference in speeds at the moment. As soon as att decides to complete the backhaul you will (hopefully) see a difference. Price is still the same. And stress it enough to them that you don't want to lose your unlimited plan. If they say that you have no other choice, then call back and speak to someone else. I had a few tell me that I will lose it, but i kept calling back and they did it without me losing the unlimited.
If its better for you, go to a corporate store and speak to an english speaking human lol.
My mother got and Infuse yesterday and i was over at her house playing with it with my sim in. after i was done i took my sim out and put it back in my fuze (shudder). this morning just as i was leaving the house for the day i got a text message from AT&T telling me that "An eligible data plan is required for your 4g Smartphone. We have added an appropriate data plan. Learn more at att.com/smartphoneplans."
so i disabled data and when i went into my acct on the web when i got home, sure enough the only data feature options i could choose were the new tiered data plans. i had to put my sim in my old ooooooold tmobile MDA for an hour or so until it updated the imei and then i could go back and choose the unlimited data option.
is this normal? if i upgrade to an infuse will that cancel my grandfather'd status? has anyone else grandfather'd updated and kept their data plan? if so how? and if i upgrade through best buy or amazon at the discounted price will i be allowed to keep it or do i have to go to an att store and pay the full upgrade price?
This has happened to a few people on the forums (lost the unlimited when it switched them to 4g) but it shouldn't. Call 611 or go into a store and they can fix it for you. You can have unlimited 4g with you grandfathered plan its just apparently sometimes putting people back to the 2gb.
I was able to keep my unlimited..
sent from Infuse but miss my captivate on cont. 5.5.... One day this can be as good...
They make it a hassle, but you can keep your unlimited data.

I got the Inuse at Best Buy and they let me keep my unlimited data without any issues. Before that I had bought the Atrix at Best Buy and had no problems either. The rep just said he was going to switch me to unlimited 4G cause the 4G plan is a bit different.
thanks all of you
the issue that occured is that our at&t systems have different classification data plans.
ie: one for blackberries, one for general smartphones (android/palm/symbian/winmo ect), iphone, and hspa+ devices. the fuse is a general classification smartphone so the message was saying that when you put your sim card in the infuse as it is a hspa+ phone, your data might not work correctly, hence the text message to change your data plan. if you go into a cor store, any rep should be able to continue your grandfathered unlimited status.
No issues here, I still have my unlimited plan...

If they try to do that, call customer care, let them know you have grandfathered unlimited data, they will file a case to change it back. They "accidentally" did that when they provisioned our sim cards for 4g when my wife and I got our Inspire's...
Hell yeah if they remove it I woukd transfer my four family plan to Sprint, now sprint has the same customer service as verizon up date according to recent survey.

When you call ATT tell them it's called SmartPhone Personal.
Tell them you want to keep the unlimoted plan. Some reps may say you can't but you Can. Dont ttake no for an answer.

I'm a Rep with att. Just shoot to a store and do it. We are MORE than happy to switch you to the unlimited HSPA+ PLAN because its more commission for us. I switch it all the time!

It still possible to get an unlimited plan even if you weren't grandfather by iphone or something? I only had the option for 200mb for $15 or the 2gb for $25 and no option for unlimited.

ok, i have a question for you, i'm planing on getting an infuse on upgrade, selling that and getting a gs2. if i go back to the $30 unlimited plan when i upgrade after getting the gs2 would i be able to switch back to the cheaper unrecognized imei data plan that i'm on now?
if YOU don't choose to change to another plan, you stay grandfathered. I am still unlimited. If you choose to go to another plan because its cheaper and later decide to use tons of data, you cant go back. If your plan was automatically changed, let CS know. they have the ability to override and re-authorize unlimited.
If they switch me to the H+ unlimited from regular old unlimited will I be able to still use my sim in my HD2? Thanks!
Also has anyone bought from Amazon. How did you go about keeping your unlimited? Just sign up for one of the available plans and then call and have it switched back?
Grandafthered plan
I have grandfathered $30 real unlimited on infuse - only thing changed is 4G addition to it. I understand that they need to classify plans somehow but i do not believe that 4G changes anything related to connection speed. I live in Portland,OR area and eventhough ATT coverage is good localy there are still no real 4G speeds. I tried Inspire, Atrix and now Infuse and none of them went over 2.5Mbps download and 0.5Mbps upload -EVER.
All their bogus stories about 4G cards and 4G dataplans are fairytales --- GSM phone needs provisioned (active) SIM Card of any type, proper APN setup, and reciever able to decode given 3G /4G frequency bands. With such combination you can connect to any GSM network (provided roaming is enabled too). So you can switch SIM cards from phone to phone regardless of data plan in their system.
I was landing on PDX airport in 2009 from Frankfurt, had my N95 with Vodafone prepaid SIM in it and as soon as I turned it on, it autoconfigured and locked to Tmobile 3G network as I still had some money on it to use data and calls. I was also using one ATT SIM card with same data plan (switching to and from ) Iphone3Gs, HTC Touch Pro2, Nokia N97 and unlocked Motorola Defy. Never had single issue...
On the other hand, after being AT&T, Cingular, at&t customer for 10+ years, I am starting to wonder is their service generally worth the money I pay every month.
My bill is for 4 phones;
unlimited family text,
1400min,
real unlimited data plan for Infuse,
real unlimited data plan for Iphone,
2 unlimited data for non smartphones for kids ($10 each)
Total: ~$220 every month....
I was recently looking into Virgin Mobile plans and they give $40 unlimited calls, messages and data. For $25 you get unlimited calls, messages and 20 megs of data (for kids...and my kids use barely any data)
Now that would cut my phone bill about ~$100/month ($1200/year)
Problem is that my dear wife would let go of the Iphone only from her dead cold hands...and she is using it like it is Apache server ~ 10Gig/month
I know I am going off topic but regardless grandfathered or not, my data plan on ATT costs only $10 less then all unlimited package on Virgin mobile.
I am aware that they do not have fancy phones as ATT but honestly ATT does not have a near selection of good phones as Verizon or T-mobile...and lesser data speeds too.
Now I wanted some opinions on my thoughts to switch carriers (and just to let you know I never used anything but GSM since i got my first cell phone in 1993 in Hamburg Germany where I am originally from)
I'm going to college next year, and I'll be stuck paying my own phone bill for the first time, and I'm wondering if it's even an option to have no mobile service. A plan with no calling or texting, just data.
If I could only pay $30 per month for my phone bill, that would be huge, considering minutes and texting. I could buy minutes from Skype or Google voice and make calls with those applications, and text through AIM or another free texting app.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/splash/messagingplans.jsp
That's probably what you're looking for but not sure if it's available for 4G devices and it says documentation required for smartphones.
I bought an off-contract Incredible and have it as a house phone using Google Voice and GrooVe IP. Works perfectly, too.
No plan required, just a wifi connection.
That could work, but is it required to either get texting or minutes? I really just want to be $30 for the unlimited data, and text through a texting app or AIM. I could easily make calls through skype or google voice.
The off-contract phone could work too, especially with a phone like the tbolt, but isn't a bit inconvenient to not be able to call or text while you're out? Also, does anyone know what a typical internet speed is for a college dorm?
U can also get the 50 minute loyalty plan for $20 + $30 data.
Verizon doesn't offer data only on phones. If u bought a galaxy tablet, then u could have data only.
I'd just use wifi if I was on campus, I'm sure its faster than 3g.

Check out the link in post 2, unlimited data and messages and no voice minutes
The link in post 2 says that documentation is required though... think that means you need proof that you are deaf or hard of hearing... so unless you have this they probably won't even give you that..

How do you do this as when you try to use google voice it wants the number associated with the phone right?
don't have a clue about the plan, I've never heard of such being offered though. Speeds will depend on what college you're at. Most major universities have at least a T1 line in my experience. YMMV
your best bet is to just visit your local verizon store and see if you get a tech who is nice enough to activate the service listed in post #2
I had the unlimited text/data activated over the phone with the corporate #. 800-922-0204. They didn't ask questions.
i like the $50 loyalty plan better. Its cheaper, u get 50 emergency minutes a month and u can text unlimited with google voice.

From the article:
"T-Mobile and Wal-Mart announced this morning a new pre-paid offering that will only be available direct from Walmart stores and through Wal-Mart and T-Mobile.com. Beginning October 16th, T-Mobile and Walmart will unveil a $30 unlimited web and text Monthly4G plan with 100 minutes of talk, with 10 cents per minute after the first 100 minutes."
This is interesting. I might switch to this since I rarely use minutes. And apparently we can use our Sensation 4G.
I might switch to this as well

get that, then use google voice for phone talk (free for now) = win.
Google Voice on the phone is not a VOIP service. It uses tour cell service/minutes to make calls.
There is a way to make Google Voice into a VOIP device but it's not a native capability and you have to sign up for other 3rd party services and do all kinds of stuff to get it to work.
I use lots of minutes, thousands.
Not many will be able to stay under 100 .
Thats when the .10 cents a minute kicks in heheh.
Also T-Mobile still offers no contract Monthly4G plans:
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans
Unlimited Everything, and 5Gigs of High Speed Data is $70/month.
I currently have an older plan, 500 minutes, Unlimited Txt and 5Gigs of HS Data for $59/month.
So yeah, this $30 plan isn't that great, especially if you use your phone as a *GASP* phone.

did not know that. thanks for pointing it out!
GrooveIP would still work for free phone calls if you have data
..or you guys could get smart and get Simple Mobile's $40 plan which includes EVERYTHING UNLIMITED. Inlcuding talk, text and 3G data or pay $60 and get "4G." No contract and no taxes. Runs on T-Mobile's network. Beat that.

T-Mobil has a plan for $50 a month that has unlimited voice, unlimited text, and unlimited data with the first 100 MB at 3G/4G speeds, no contract or other fees, and it includes roaming so you get T-Mobil's network and ATT's network.
Beat that.
This isnt a bad deal since I barely use minutes thanks to wifi calling but I think ill stick with my $40 a month for 500 minutes and unlimited text/5gb web
Moderators/Administrators/Site Founders - I did not find a dedicated forum/Thred for discussing Verizon Phones/Plans in general with Unlimited Data. That is the reason, I'm posting here. If there is a thread for discussing Verizon Plans & Unlimited Data You can please move this thread there and please let me know. I can go there. But I did search and I did not find.
Hi Guys,
Howardforums and xda developers have been wonderful and filled with lot of people with real information which is hard to find else where on the internet.
I'm coming from Boost Mobile and I thought of experiencing the 4G LTE speeds from Verizon and that's when, I realized that, No Unlimited 4G LTE for new customers. New customers will have Tiered Data Plans. So the only way I can get Unlimited Data is from a AOL of an existing Line. I can keep it till I get a Verizon Phone from Outside( Ebay, craigslist, etc ) or buy a Phone at a full Price from Verizon.
With that, I got a Alltel Plan. This is a old Plan.
It has
Bundled Voice and Text ^ Voice - 500 Minutes and Text - Unlimited
Data is Unlimited
10 Family and Friends + 1 Bonus, since it is a old line. Nights start at 7:00 P.M for this plan.
This is the status of my plan.
My question is, if I want to change the Voice and Text plan, can I do that? I NEED UNLIMITED DATA. IF THIS VOICE/TEXT PLAN CHANGING HURTS THAT UNLIMITED DATA, THEN I WILL NOT DO THAT.
But I do not use Text, I do not use 500 Minutes Voice. Is there anyway that I can downgrade my Voice nad Text Plan?
I tried to find the old Alltel Plans, but that information is not available anywhere. Any help is highly appreciated.
ManyThanks,
A J.
AFAIK Verizon is discontinuing Alltel plans shortly. (a friend got notice that his voice/text would work but data would not) at the end of January. Your best bet would be to find someone who is wanting out of their contract with Verizon who has unlimited data.
Until that happens you could use groove ip with Google voice to make calls through data and not your minutes.

Thanks a lot for the information.
I don't think that is going to happen. Because, in the terms and conditions, My contract is till Jan 2014. I don't think they can disable the Unlimited Data feature on that plan.
If that is the case, even the regular Verizon customers also should lose their unlimited Data. Since Alltel is now part of Verizon, all they can do is ask the earlier customers to migrate to the existing calling, text plans. But Data plans are going to be the same I guess.
Am I going wrong somewhere?
