Installed Nougat, trying to re-root, TWRP reboots halfway when installing SuperSU - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

I updated to EMUI 5 with nougat, i think i lost my root. Went back to TWRP and about 60% of the way through the install phone reboots by itself with the phone not being rooted. Tried different superSU versions along with an adb sideload, same thing. Anyone have any idea what i'm doing wrong?

twrp is not yet able to flash supersu successfully, if u want to root then flash a patched boot.img from here https://mega.nz/#!69IlASwI!FjF5rhALGGA_tusum7FdXgnO1R45ZIpdrahNa0UXT-8
Root working with B360 (L09 only at the minute)
thanks to @Atarii
Reboot into bootloader mode
Extract files and "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
Reboot into system
Install phh's SuperUser app from Play Store
OR
if u have twrp flash it thru twrp

Try this boot image. You can flash it from twrp. Do not clear the cache or davlik. Reboot and install the phh super user apk.

I am also trying to get root on an H8 FRD-L04. So does this boot.img file get flashed in twrp like any other zip file or do I need to choose different options in twrp to write it to the correct place?
Also can you tell me which version of twrp you are using? There seem to be several floating around on xda.
Have you had any other issues with apps that need root since you did this? I'd like to get my favorite xposed mods working on my H8.

Unzip the file first, that should leave you with bootr.img I think it's called. Make a backup just in case, but yes, flash it just like you would anything else, no need to wipe anything and no I did not change any settings.
I'm using TWRP 3.0.3 found here https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/development/twrp-t3566563
I have tried at least 5 apps that have needed root and have not had any issues. I haven't tried xposed yet though.

And so the bootr.img is 'pre-rooted" so I don't then need to flash "SuperSU-v2.79-201612051815-EMUI5.0.zip" or any other SU zip file, or format the Data partition as some other threads have mentioned, to get root, is that correct?

I did not format or wipe anything. I simply backed up my boot.img and flashed bootr.img. I did not flash anything else. After that, I rebooted and installed phh Superuser from the play store. That's it.

Directly from Android, no. You'll need root to do that. Just power off your device, when its turned off press and hold volume up, home and power at the same time. Flash from recovery.

Yup. Just do a wipe and flash whatever you like. As long as you have access to bootloader, and keep a backup it is very hard to brick your phone - Im new to samsung, but as i understand with Odin it is even harder to brick it.
On a side note, i had some issues getting it to mount /system - Turns out that it cant if the phone is plugged into the computer (i did a facepalm after trying ~3hours getting it to flash CM )

The thing is I backed up my old system before I flashed Android 4.3. Now CWM cant access the directory. I'm afraid if it can't access the directory then it wont be able to flash properly and I will for ever be stuck on bootloop.

Exactly. I tried searching for stock firmware, couldn't find one. So I thought either I find a way to restore. Or flash an already rooted ROM. You see my dilemma.

In any case - Back up your current (working) installation - There will be a way to get root in the future. Now you dont have to worry about not being able to use the phone (since you have a working backup), and you can goahead and flash something else.
Dont bother installing different recoveries, they all work just fine - And TWRP wont be able to restore from a CWM backup anyways..
But I dont understand why CWM cannot access your former backup.

dont know if this will work for you but here goes. i have a T999L (T-Mobile LTE S3) i have twrp installed on it and i have slimbean 4.3 official build installed on it, i had the same issue with getting 4.3 rooted but i got it figured out first make sure in the developer options you have superuser allowed by adb and apps.
( if you don't see developer options in your settings menu
go to :Settings>About Phone> click on your build number several times until you get a toast that says your almost a developer keep clicking until it says it has been enabled)
then you will use motoChopper to push the exploit to get the superuser.apk added to the system/apps folder once you do this it won't work as they have somehow allowed access for the expoit to push the .apk but not push the binary to the system/xbin folder.
now pull the SU binary out of the motoChopper folder on your computer and place in on your sdcard
boot into TWRP, mount the file system and copy it from your sdcard to the system/xbin folder and voila you are done, when you go to reboot your device from TWRP it will ask you if you want to fix the Superuser permissions just skip and reboot
( all rights thanks and so on go to the original developer djrbliss and i do not take any credit for his work, nor did i get permission to modify his work, i tried but got no response so i modded it for myself to use and i am now sharing, all i did was swap the Superuser.apk and SU binaries he used in his exploit.) @djrbliss if you would like this post removed just let me know and i will pull it!
not sure why the list showed up as 1 1 1 2 but i think you get the point

DOWNLOAD
(Some users had problems unzipping this ZIP with WinRAR, consider using free alternatives such as 7-zip)
MAIN URL: Click here to download (Please use this download, but if in any case you can't extract, you may use the mirror I provided.)
MIRROR: Click here to download.
HOW-TO
1. Enable Developer Options (Tap MIUI version 7 times in About Phone), and then in Developer Options, enable USB debugging.
2. Have you downloaded the ZIP? No? Download it, now.
3. Extract the downloaded ZIP wherever you like, keep in mind that all files must be kept together.
4. Connect your phone to the PC.
5. Run the Start.bat file.
ATTENTION: Please do a ROOT (I'll assume you're still in MIUI) before you flash TWRP, or you may be brought back into stock recovery. (Thanks to @omerjerk for testing this)
---
UPDATE: This toolkit's TWRP is deprecated (download the newest version here), but if you don't want to hassle with downloading another fastboot driver, you can still download dh.harald's recovery .img file, and copy your downloaded recovery to the extracted toolkit folder, then change dh.harald's recovery filename into twrp.img (UNTESTED)
I'll repack this toolkit with dh.harald's newest TWRP whenever possible.

This toolkit is made by magdag, all credits goes to him.

Backup everything (all partitions) except the first in the list.
You may want to use the compression.
The backup should be somewhere between 3.5GB and 5.5GB depending on the options and the data.
You could install ROM Manager (from Koushik Dutta) from the Play Store.
Choose the TWRP as recovery and Unknown Device as device.
Then you can use this to backup with TWRP and it will choose the right options for you.

I've MiUi 6.6.10 on my device.
I used this toolkit to flash twrp but I'm not able to do so.
Whenever I select the 2 option, it flashes the recovery successfully. But, when I boot to recovery again using adb reboot recovery, I get the stock recovery and not twrp.
What I'm doing wrong ?
P.S. I haven't rooted the phone yet.

It shouldn't be like that, but that's how it is right now. I'm not sure if there's any fix available, but I guess an updated version of the recovery will be released soon, that has this problem fixed..
Yeah this method works I have done it and easy as drinkin beer

Same here. Tested and working. I am on Mokee rom now.
Thanks for the guide but I found something wierd happening. After succesfully flashing twrp and rebooting it goes in twrp when I restart after that and try to go in recovery with volume up +power it takes me to stock recovery? Any ideas??:/
So version 3 works without any touch problems?

I'm using the v3 linked in this thread and the touch problem still exists. I have to wait 2-3 minutes before it works.
I tested the 2.8.7.0 version from miui.com and touch screen worked immediately. I'm not sure if it was just lucky or not, because I only tested it once. Maybe worth trying it and see how it works?
It'd weird because the one I have some times freezes and some times doesn't

Just reflash TWRP then reboot to TWRP, it should ask you if you want to either use it as read only or allow modification, select allow modification. Hope that helps.
Yes with the modded version on xiaomi.eu the touch works!

Works great, was a fun night of figuring this out together glad it worked out! Everything is functioning properly!
Just remember when you first load into TWRP you will need to go to wipe > format data and type yes.
This will erase all data so be sure to backup all your personal files to your SD card using the phone before you format. Then proceed to use the above instructions!
I got it flashed successfully and can get to it but it's asking for a decrypt password. I never set one up, so I'm not sure what to do. I still tried to format but it gives an error about inability to mount.
Edit - even with the error, it still has me set up Android again but it still wants a decrypt password and I can't mount.

Its normal. look at the other threads for twrp they always say to format the data after a reboot. Maybe add it to your tutorial thingy.
Edit: Thanks a lot guys its a lot more fun with root and TWRP. (>^.^)>

Thank you for this! Once my sata cables come in the mail and I get my Windows copy up and running on my second hard drive I need to create an ISO .img from the KDZ file you gave me. Need to get my phone back to stock, and im thankful you guys got TWRP working on this great phone.
Create a IMG from kdz? Don't you just use the kdz in lg up or something to reflash?

That sounds like allot less pain in the ass. Can you give me a quick breakdown of how to reset into stock using the KDZ. Dont need go type paragraps or anything just a brief summary this is all new to me.
Heres a tutorial. Its made for the aristo 1 but im sure it should work with the aristo 2. Use the lg up program.here
Just make sure to use the kdz made for the aristo 2 that you already have.
Forgot you may need uppercut aswell. here sometimes it gives a error which uppercut fixes.
Has anyone tried any other cameras with this phone? I was thinking of trying to flash CameraNext or SnapDragon but I've never tried either on a stock rom, so I'm not sure whether I'd bootloop.

I am trying to find good camera apps for this phone because the stock one is not that good. I will try those two that you have just posted.

I've tried finding other LG camera apps but none would work. Let me know how CameraNext works (if it does).
OpenCamera is giving me terrible quality.
Bacon Camera seems ok.
Google Camera is ok, but limited.
That's all I've tried. I know this camera should be capable of some good pictures.
Edit - I found an APK only install for CameraNextMod v10. This might be the best we can get with this camera unless the zip versions are compatible. Here's a link https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aLdiT1B2TcDFL0vfcmwYz6L7EdxqgFKj/view?usp=sharing

So, I just went back into TWRP for the first time since and it's still asking for a password to decrypt. I don't want to wipe everything again. Any ideas? Nothing is mounted and I can't mount without the password.

OxygenOS C.36 out but DON'T INSTALL THIS UPDATE FOR NOW!

I got a KB2003 - ONeplus 8T EU
Oxygen Updater told me today there's an update avaliable, version C.36.
I donloaded it via the app and updated manually.
Phone did not boot up.
I was able to boot into recovery once where it said the system is corrupt.
I managed to enter fastboot mode. It was recognised on my PC by fastboot but no fastboot command are not accepted. I couldn't even turn it off again.
About 2 hours passed.
Then I managed to turn it off and it booted up like nothing happened, but I cannot download the data from it. Nothing is showing up in my browser via cable connection.
I am not feeling safe anymore ... I think I will roll back to C.35 if possible ASAP.
You need to keep an eye on https://community.oneplus.com/wap/circleDetail?id=1034260458221338626
C.36 is an IN only version at the moment of OOS 12
Update: since I first wrote this post there have been reports of C.36 being available now for both EU and NA.
Thanks.
Can I download C.35 and install simply install it?
The C36 is rolling out to other versions now. See https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/updates-thread.4188149/
I've just received the KB2005 (NA/global) version when I checked in Settings>About device. Normally the EU version takes longer to roll out.
I don't think the system updater will let you downgrade to C35, but you can try.
After 1 night everything seems to work well. I did not try to Rollback or did anything.
Fastboot is back.
Still do not understand the issue. LOL
I updated it earlier. Now it's stuck on reboot loop :/

long as you know how to recover from brick with msm tool. but steps i use is oxygen updater to download full ota. (not incremental update) .put the 3gb zip on pc. use payload dumper to dump the zip (only for boot.img) take boot put on phone use magisk Canary to patch that boot. put boot on pc, reboot to recovery and fastboot boot magisk.img. once phone boots use magisk to directly patch boot and its rooted
