creative usage of Google photos unlimited storage - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Hey all,
Since Google Pixel owners get unlimited cloud storage for videos/photos, this got me thinking. Anyone have an idea if there's a way to make a video file we have be indexed as a video/photo to be uploaded to that unlimited cloud storage space?
I'm referring to movies I own (not through the Google play store or Amazon/netflix, etc...), so that I can stream them from the cloud without using up my phones storage space.

You might be able to change the meta data to show that it was recorded with pixel, I'd check your recorded videos meta and see how it's setup and see if you can mimic it.

Pictures and videos do not need to be taken with a Pixel. Only uploaded.

That makes no sense, anything uploaded to Google photos app with pixel regardless of the meta is part of the free storage? I find that hard to believe.

I don't know if they get backed up at full resolution or not but any picture I add to my phone, whether taken with the Pixel camera, downloaded, copied over from my computer or those from my previous phone all get backed up to Google. If I add it, it goes. I never used Google Photos until I bought my Pixel so I know those that are backed up from my previous phone came from my Pixel. Not the M8.
As for videos not taken with the Pixel, my guess is they would have to be converted to a compatible format. One that the camera uses, in order for them to get uploaded. I could be wrong though.

Google photos backs up anything from your phone regardless, I would try adding a downloaded video checking the storage space, and seeing if it is affected, if it is I would recommend editing meta-data and seeing if you can edit it to look like the pixel produced it, but if not seems like a huge flaw.

[Q] Thumbnails for movies?

Anyone know how to add thumbnails for movies you put in the gallery? I used DVD Catalyst to convert some movies (awesome application by the way totally worth it if youre looking for how to put movies on virtually any device). Only problem is unless I use THEIR gallery and add a picture with same name as the movie, it wont display a thumbnail - using their gallery clogs my own gallery with pictures and movies that are black, and they leave a border around the movie that isnt black - annoying. *sigh*
Anyone else have luck?

Hi Spartacus,
Thank you for using DVD Catalyst,
I created the player-app because there wasn't anything else out there that would let you use your own cover images for your video files. Before the 3.1 update on HC, you could create a folder, put a video file in it and then an image file, and it would display it in the Gallery app, but Google broke that with the 3.1 update, so I made the app. I still haven't seen anything else that works in a similar way.
I have been working on an update for it all week, and after I read your post, I did make some changes regarding the images, so the next update will have them not show up in Gallery.

Thanks, looking forward to the update. I know myself and a lot of others still want a way to add thumbnails for movies in the gallery.

Same here, but with that being a gripe since the beginning of Android, I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon. Because the idea behind it is so simple and obvious, I was expecting someone to come up with it, but since that never happened, I figured I'd give it a shot.

mediascanner issue? my music is invisible

So I installed jelly bean when it came out. (Codename Android 3.6.0 at the time of writing, but the problem persists regardless of the specific rom I'm using). I noticed that none of the music players available in the play store can find my music on my sd card. They are all in a folder named mp3, but I even tried renaming it to music - no luck. Also, the only pictures I can see in my gallery are the ones that have been made since the installation of the current rom. Does anyone have an idea how to force the mediascanner to actually scan my media? Damn, I want my media so bad

I have no idea why your music isn't being picked up. That's usually never an issue. Maybe someone else can chime in.
As for the gallery pictures not showing up. Just download Quick Pic from the Play Store. The default Android Gallery has been crying to be put of out of its misery for awhile now. It's terrible and slow. Yes, you can transfer pictures to your device and the gallery will take 5 minutes to eventually display them. Quick Pic is superior and will instantly pick up any pictures you add. No waiting involved.

Thank you for the tip, QuickPic actually solved my gallery issue, what still remains is the music list not showing up in any of the players I have tried... (Winamp, Google Play Music, Apollo, just to name a few)
check if one of the apps in use is the media scanner in a constant state of reboot.
media scanner problems often are caused by malformed jpeg file, the bug usually lies in the Exif information, you can use this tool (http://www.digitalconfidence.com/BatchPurifier.html) to remove Exif information from the file, 95% chance that everything returns to work including music and video because the media scanner is shared and if it hangs on jpeg images then can not catalog other multimedia files.
you will lose data such GPS position but the photo itself will remain intact, many have pointed at Camera360 as one of the sources of these corrupted files and I can confirm that.
I got a similar issue before and is solved by copy all media to a pc, delete the files in the phone, then move them back, see if it can help you
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
That's an old issue that happened to some when they updated to JB back in July. So, welcome to July.

Thank you for the suggestion, it helped me!
@madd0g you had better stay off the forums, you are completely useless...
If it's not fixed completely, run a search on your sdcard for files named ".nomedia" and delete them.

Alrighty. Just make sure there are none at the root of the SDcard or in folders where you want pictures to appear. Clockworkmod ROM Manager had a bug back a lil while ago where it put some .nomedia files in wrong folders, making people unable to find their music/picture.

This tip helped me and my Note. Thanks a lot. There were a lot of useless .nomedia files in my SD card.
I already had similar question posted. Got no resolution....

Anybody have the solution? I am able to see pictures in gallery and videos on my MX player but no music?
I deleted nomedia (found one) and got rid of rom manager but still my music files don't show up with all the players. I can go directly to media/music via root explorer and play it though.
Go to your apps, find Media Storage, and then clear data & cache.
Download Rescan Media from the play store and run it. Wait for a bit (5 minutes should be good) and if you check in your music player(s) you should be able to see your music.
database or cache that the media scan builds is gone

I have done that and everything works fine. BUT! after a battery change or charge (plug in USB cable) the database or cache that the media scan builds is gone. Deleted or corrupted by something. Its back to the same state, no music, video, added ringtones or pics show until a rescan. What could be deleting it?

Hacked Vault Account

i recently uploaded my personal videos on NQ Vault mobile app, which stores such data safely. But when I later
tried playing the video from the app, I couldn't . I believe the video has been or is deleted but not by me. The size of the video just showed 0 MB.
Does this mean I have been hacked and if so do they have my video?

You should get in touch with the developers of the app to see if it has just been lost in their servers! Also, if you backed up your videos to the cloud (Which is a feature of the app), they may be accessible from another device. Try logging in to your account on another device (if you have one). If you dont, your best option is to contact the makers of the app! :good:
@[email protected] I hope you get your files back!

You might want to try certain media apps like a gallery app. QuickPic for example allow you to choose the location in which the app should search and show pictures from. This can be a general base location. And when you have found a picture you can go to the details and find out the exact location. Unlike the default gallery app (or how it used to be?) QuickPic shows images categorised on folders there in. For video files tr MX Player or another app that will play most formats. MX Player for example should also show all your video files on your phone in folders and the locations in detail view.
Storage analyser apps are also available. they scan your phone storage and show you how much of your storage is filled with audio/video/pics and where that is placed. A less visually attractive but in my opinion a great tool to get a clear view of where you have a lot of MB/GB's you have store is using "Storage analyser" But for finding specific file types this is not the one you need.

ShadowPlay doesn't save video files to Gallery folder

So, as we all know, the K1 tablet (both versions, I have the newest revision), comes with nVidia ShadowPlay built into for video recording, and when you activate manual recording, the videos are saved to the photo/gallery photo on the main tablet's storage and not to an external SD card. Well, it came to my attention that when I record a video, as in starting and stopping when I'm done, the OSD states "recording saved", I look in all the folders and there is no video saved to the tablet. Am I doing something wrong? Is there no way for me to find out if it actually captures and records a video file or am I screwed?

That doesn't really help though, as I'm trying to locate the files so I can upload them to YouTube, or extract them and keep them on my PC so I don't run out of space as the files with ShadowPlay can get quite large, depending on the settings I use. The other problem is that the files are nowhere to be found on the SD card or internal storage, like, at all. I looked in all the folders, not a single MP4 file has been found, what am I doing wrong? What can I do to ensure that a file is actually written to the internal storage? Is there an actual way I can see where it stores the file? I'm getting kinda desperate here, because no matter how many times the app says "recording saved" it doesn't actually save a bloody thing. I must be doing something wrong.
I don't care about seeing the recordings on my tablet, I only care about being able to extract them from the tablet and uploading the files to YouTube from my PC after I copy them. Of course though, no one seems to ever reply to the threads I make anyway, so chances are, you'll be the only one to reply to them, which means this issue will get me nowhere after I reply.

So, does that mean that the files are in fact being recorded and saved, but are just "hidden" in some fashion? I'm just confused as to why they wouldn't give an option to show file in folder or the path, anyways, I installed the app and I do hope it works, that and I hope there's no weird writing permissions lol and thank you. Sorry for bothering ya.

No worries, things like that can get frustrating lol As long as MX Player can find the video (might have to hit the little refresh button) you should be able to locate it

Just tried that program and worked like a charm, it copied the video file to a folder I made in ES Explorer, thank you so much!
Though I do wonder though, where it's storing the videos beforehand, the file explorer shows a folder but cannot be accessed by normal means, I'm thinking it's hidden, and this thing is rooted, so I don't know lol.
