Pixel and Android Auto - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

So my friend just came from a Galaxy s6 and has been using Android Auto (Pioneer 4100 NEX) for awhile. The pixel will not work at all when connected.
Anyone have the same issue or a resolution to it?
Thanks!

Go here for help with stereo, http://avic411.com/ Also Pioneer web site has help about the Pixel and Android Auto. The biggest problem is the cords from the stereo. Some people have had to plug a " special" cord to the back of the stereo.

FWIW, my wife has a S7 edge and Avic 4200 and we had to use the Pioneer microsd cable. On my Kenwood DNX 893s I use the OEM USB A-C cable on my Pixel. Cords can make a big difference for picking up the phone. I'm not aware of any pioneer pixel issues though... Usually up to date firmware on the radios and OEM cables do the trick.

Not with that particular radio, but just to say using the USB A to C cable in my Ford Focus works just fine with Android Auto. The only issue I have is if I touch my phone or cable the wrong way it will kick it out of Auto mode for some reason.

My GF bought a 2016 Honda Accord a few months ago and trying to navigate the touch screen and get android auto to work properly is like trying to solve a Rubiks cube. If you're plugged into the cars USB port simply to charge your phone (as a passenger) android auto keeps popping up on the screen and wanting to take over. You try to exit the screen thats prompting you to use android auto and seconds later it'll pop back up. So finally you admit defeat and try to install android auto on your phone officially and it wont install or connect with the cars stereo. IF you finally get it to work, you phone becomes completely inoperable, which kind of makes sense as you can control the music and everything from the steering wheel or the cars touch screen, but if you're a passenger it sucks because you can't do anything on your phone. If you uninstall android auto, the car stereo constantly tries to connect with your phone and wont let you do anything else. Half the problems I have are with android auto and the other half with with what I consider a crappy user interface/layout and design of the stereo. If I could murder android auto, I would do it violently.

I know with my Kenwood DNX893S and any Android I can swipe down from the top of the phone and choose "charging only" or something like that and the phone goes back to normal and it can be used while charging.

Mirrorlink + Car Mode not working

I purchased the S7 hoping to utilize my head unit on my 2014 Honda Civic. I installed RockScout to ensure SOMETHING would show up and it did. I installed Car Mode through the Galaxy app store, and the app shows up under the Mirrorlink "menu" in settings under MirrorLink applications. One would think that this would mean it should show up on the car's screen when connected, but alas it does not.
Is there something I'm missing? Has anyone else been able to get this to work?
solved... somewhat
So I found a solution for those who may be having the same issue.
--- I guess I can't post links yet because I'm so new.. go to youtube and use this video id to watch: xEaR97-ETeM ---
surprisingly, this seems to have made the car mode work for me.
Perform the steps shown in the video,
Open Car Mode on your phone
Connect the phone to the car via USB
Select one of the available MirrorLink apps (in my case it was Rock Scout)
The chosen app will open and the Car Mode nav bar will appear on the left. Now you can just hit it's home button and you're taken to Car Mode.
Now I need to figure out how to get Google Maps to work on Car Mode. Currently, it looks like it only supports navigation apps that Mirror Link supports
(I'm assuming due a head-unit-display-UI not being available on Google Maps.. probably legal reasons there)
What is the title of the youtube video? I tried your link and it did not work out for me.
When I connect the Galaxy S7 to my stereo, the Samsung automatically locks on the Mirrorlink connection screen, it will not let me navigate way.

still this is strange, car mode is visible under mirrorlink certifications yet it is not visible when phone is connected to car radio
Having the same problem. 2016 Subaru Crosstrek with factory head unit. Couple mirror link apps are working fine but car mode does not show up on the head unit at all. Really want it so I can use google maps on the bigger screen.
Running a Sony XAV-601BT and same issue. It shows as connected (however get a USB device not recognized error), tried the tricks above and no dice Really disappointed so far, as my old Z2 worked fine.
Found some info in the Subaru forums. Sounds like MirrorLink 1.1 is more strict about what it allows to display. So 1.0 just kinda mirrored everything, 1.1 actually checks to make sure you don't wiggle your way into another app. Since Car Mode isn't allowed by the car, even though its MirrorLink certified, it gets blocked... Sigh...

Yes, MirrorLink 1.1 also requires each specific app to be certified before it can be displayed. I don't think Google is going to support this ever, since they are pushing their own Android Auto.
Would LOVE to see a workaround for this, purchased a mirrorlink addon for my Pioneer AVH-X3600BHS and it doesnt work properly grrr
Grrr "Smartphone Not Compatible" when trying to connect Samsung Galaxy s7 to Honda Civic 2016...Applications are certified, USB in MTP mode but it just does not work...
I've only got this to work with HTC phones. See my video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhFsBz31-qU
There are other videos on youtube as well . . all using HTC phones.
I've tried my process on a couple nexus devices and samsung devices, they don't work.
Something about the HTC mirrorlink technology thats works perfectly... EVERYTHING works.
So . . . i'm currently stuck using a cheap HTC 626s phone because it works so well with my 2014 Civic si head unit.
Currently looking for a used HTC m9 or 10 so I can have a beefier phone but still retain the mirrorlink functionality.
This only worked for me so far when the ROM is stock. Dunno if has something to do with the other ROMs being rooted.. Researching, because I'd like to have a custom ROM with root AND this working.
I have a pioneer nex and a galaxy s7. The online way i found to conecct was installing sygic car Navigation, the app works with mirrorlink so it opens on the hu, then i just exit the app and boom full mirroing, the only problem is that the Phone stays locked while conected.

Do all your buttons work properly, like the the back button? On Appradio 4 with my s7 edge, I can only hit the home button which takes me back to rock scout. I haven't tried sygic

In mine only the back button of the hu is shown, the others are missing too, so i ve installed a program to simulate the buttons, its called Simple Control.
I've heard that the pioneer is easy to hack, but was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Linux that these seem to run? Is there a way to trick the car head unit to allow any device with a custom rom to connect to mirrorlink 1.1?
My mass storage device is recognised but the internal SD card in MTP mode isn't. Does Sygic App allow it to connect regardless?
Anyone has skills how to mod car mode app, so it works like RockScout. Apparently it only works on VW mirorlink radios, I have a Subaru with the 7" Mirrorink 1.1 inch unit and it would be nice if this software barrier can be "corrected". I have seen it show car mode when exiting the RockScout app, so I know it works, just that its blocked.
There is a way to root the phone and then install an app that runs car mode, but this doens't work in 1.1 either. I have heard that someone was running CM mod with full mirroring. Any thoughts? There must be a way in Linux to connect and change the connect settings through the app? Is it it android specifiic ie version?

I have the same vehicle. So frustrating to have a brand new car with a perfectly decent screen built in (picture of backup cam looks pretty good) and no ability to take advantage of it. They want us to pay however many thousand dollars more to use their navigation system, which I'm sure sucks out of the box and will no doubt be useless in 1-2 years anyway. It would be SO MUCH SAFER if they let us just mirror the friggin screen. You KNOW it's not that compatibility is complicated. Dicks. (I love my Subaru otherwise )

Android Auto issues without Mirrorlink

I read that Android Auto doesn't require mirrorlink to work with your car, but I cannot get Android Auto to work with my Honda Civic EX Hatch 2017 without enabling mirrorlink.
When I connect my USB C cable with mirrorlink off, nothing happens. It doesn't even detect a device as being connected on my phone or the car's infotainment screen.
When I start mirrorlink it instantly brings up my Samsung device on the car's dashboard and phone goes into android auto mode with a black backdrop.
Hi, I've got a civic hatch and an S8+. Android auto works exactly the same as it did with my Pixel xl.
Start with the basics. Have you got android auto installed on the phone?
Which usb port are you using? I think it only works with the front one.
I can check any settings on the car or phone if you need to check anything

bluetooth issue

so, im not sure if this is the best place for this as there are 3 distinct key factors at play. I have an A8(2018 model) (obviously LoL) and a Gear S3 frontier AND an Pioneer AVH2300NEX headunit which runs android auto. So, i guess 4 distinct factors. Anyways, every time i connect my phone via sub to the deck, it disconnects my watch. I can go into the phone and reconnect it and itll stay connected until the next time i connect to the deck again. Not sure if this is a deck issue, a phone issue, a watch issue or an android auto issue. Any help would be appreciated
Does the watch act as an audio device? It would make sense for only one audio device to be connected at the same time.
I have an A8,, Moto 360 v2, and a BT car system and stay connected. My watch does not have a speaker.

Android auto !

So IAM using my pixle 3 as my back up phone ..and can't for the life of me get my Android auto to work in any of my cars....is there a known bug with p3 and Android auto ?
Are you talking about the Android Auto app or an Android Auto head unit in your car? If the app, what is not working? Do you have a bluetooth connection? Does Maps work?
App ...I hate my pixle because of it
I'm on AA Version 5.0.500224 on my Pixel 3 and use it plugged into my 2019 Subaru all the time. Once in a while the head unit locks up and doesn't work until I turn the car off and back on. Car, not a phone problem.
Works fine on my wife's OG Pixel as well.
You need to give it a load of permissions and have location on.
I use my Pixel 3 in my 2017 Subaru daily. I'd suggest a new USB cable. Also, about a year ago they added a feature to the HK audio that lets you reboot the head unit without turning the car off by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
Late reply: don't forget to enable data transfer for the USB, not charge only.
It would be worth checking the cable you are using - I have found some cables are not compatible with using Android Auto

Android auto HUD interface slow

When using AA, the touchscreen interface with my car is extremely painful. Sometimes it just doesn't work at all. I end up having too unplug the phone from my car, then reconnecting to make anything work.
Especially frustrating when trying to change radio stations while using navigation app (Waze). The exit button doesn't work.
I thought it may be my car, then I got a rental when traveling. Brand new 22 model. Same thing.
Sometimes it works, but mostly I have to make changes with the phone unplugged.
Any suggestions?
OnePlus 7 pro factory no mods except developer mode enabled.
Thanks.
So I just received my brand new Toyota minivan. Hoped to be true of all my complaints. Sadly the same issue persists. The beautiful 9 inch touchscreen HUD is useless when my phone is connected.
