I purchased the S7 hoping to utilize my head unit on my 2014 Honda Civic. I installed RockScout to ensure SOMETHING would show up and it did. I installed Car Mode through the Galaxy app store, and the app shows up under the Mirrorlink "menu" in settings under MirrorLink applications. One would think that this would mean it should show up on the car's screen when connected, but alas it does not.
Is there something I'm missing? Has anyone else been able to get this to work?
solved... somewhat
So I found a solution for those who may be having the same issue.
--- I guess I can't post links yet because I'm so new.. go to youtube and use this video id to watch: xEaR97-ETeM ---
surprisingly, this seems to have made the car mode work for me.
Perform the steps shown in the video,
Open Car Mode on your phone
Connect the phone to the car via USB
Select one of the available MirrorLink apps (in my case it was Rock Scout)
The chosen app will open and the Car Mode nav bar will appear on the left. Now you can just hit it's home button and you're taken to Car Mode.
Now I need to figure out how to get Google Maps to work on Car Mode. Currently, it looks like it only supports navigation apps that Mirror Link supports
(I'm assuming due a head-unit-display-UI not being available on Google Maps.. probably legal reasons there)
What is the title of the youtube video? I tried your link and it did not work out for me.
When I connect the Galaxy S7 to my stereo, the Samsung automatically locks on the Mirrorlink connection screen, it will not let me navigate way.

still this is strange, car mode is visible under mirrorlink certifications yet it is not visible when phone is connected to car radio
Having the same problem. 2016 Subaru Crosstrek with factory head unit. Couple mirror link apps are working fine but car mode does not show up on the head unit at all. Really want it so I can use google maps on the bigger screen.
Running a Sony XAV-601BT and same issue. It shows as connected (however get a USB device not recognized error), tried the tricks above and no dice Really disappointed so far, as my old Z2 worked fine.
Found some info in the Subaru forums. Sounds like MirrorLink 1.1 is more strict about what it allows to display. So 1.0 just kinda mirrored everything, 1.1 actually checks to make sure you don't wiggle your way into another app. Since Car Mode isn't allowed by the car, even though its MirrorLink certified, it gets blocked... Sigh...

Yes, MirrorLink 1.1 also requires each specific app to be certified before it can be displayed. I don't think Google is going to support this ever, since they are pushing their own Android Auto.
Would LOVE to see a workaround for this, purchased a mirrorlink addon for my Pioneer AVH-X3600BHS and it doesnt work properly grrr
Grrr "Smartphone Not Compatible" when trying to connect Samsung Galaxy s7 to Honda Civic 2016...Applications are certified, USB in MTP mode but it just does not work...
I've only got this to work with HTC phones. See my video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhFsBz31-qU
There are other videos on youtube as well . . all using HTC phones.
I've tried my process on a couple nexus devices and samsung devices, they don't work.
Something about the HTC mirrorlink technology thats works perfectly... EVERYTHING works.
So . . . i'm currently stuck using a cheap HTC 626s phone because it works so well with my 2014 Civic si head unit.
Currently looking for a used HTC m9 or 10 so I can have a beefier phone but still retain the mirrorlink functionality.
This only worked for me so far when the ROM is stock. Dunno if has something to do with the other ROMs being rooted.. Researching, because I'd like to have a custom ROM with root AND this working.
I have a pioneer nex and a galaxy s7. The online way i found to conecct was installing sygic car Navigation, the app works with mirrorlink so it opens on the hu, then i just exit the app and boom full mirroing, the only problem is that the Phone stays locked while conected.

Do all your buttons work properly, like the the back button? On Appradio 4 with my s7 edge, I can only hit the home button which takes me back to rock scout. I haven't tried sygic

In mine only the back button of the hu is shown, the others are missing too, so i ve installed a program to simulate the buttons, its called Simple Control.
I've heard that the pioneer is easy to hack, but was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Linux that these seem to run? Is there a way to trick the car head unit to allow any device with a custom rom to connect to mirrorlink 1.1?
My mass storage device is recognised but the internal SD card in MTP mode isn't. Does Sygic App allow it to connect regardless?
Anyone has skills how to mod car mode app, so it works like RockScout. Apparently it only works on VW mirorlink radios, I have a Subaru with the 7" Mirrorink 1.1 inch unit and it would be nice if this software barrier can be "corrected". I have seen it show car mode when exiting the RockScout app, so I know it works, just that its blocked.
There is a way to root the phone and then install an app that runs car mode, but this doens't work in 1.1 either. I have heard that someone was running CM mod with full mirroring. Any thoughts? There must be a way in Linux to connect and change the connect settings through the app? Is it it android specifiic ie version?

I have the same vehicle. So frustrating to have a brand new car with a perfectly decent screen built in (picture of backup cam looks pretty good) and no ability to take advantage of it. They want us to pay however many thousand dollars more to use their navigation system, which I'm sure sucks out of the box and will no doubt be useless in 1-2 years anyway. It would be SO MUCH SAFER if they let us just mirror the friggin screen. You KNOW it's not that compatibility is complicated. Dicks. (I love my Subaru otherwise )

Kenwood released this app that will allow head unit control of your smartphone using HDMI and Bluetooth Input connections. Right now, the only supported devices for the S3, S4, Note II and Sony devices.
Is there a root tweak or hack that can be developed that will trick the app so that any device can work with the app?

Found this via a random google search. As of now, 02/19/2016 Kenwood has not updated this app to support Android 6 Marshmallow. If you have this app installed on Android 6, it will just force close. I have an idea that it won't work because of the permissions restrictions on the new Android OS. Once Kenwood updates the app to request permissions for us to grant we'll be good again. If you rely heavily on the touch screen options over the MHL/HDMI then stay with Android 5 (lollipop).
I have the following setup in my vehicle and it works quite well:
My Physical setup:
HDMI cable run from back of of my Kenwood to my center console where I have a coupler to plug-in my MHL cable. The idea is to make it easy to plug-in a Miracast device someday. Right now the wireless mirroring is far to buggy and slow, so connecting directly is the only way to go here for me. I cut my Parking SW (switch) greenish wire and wired it into the ground wire (black). This allows me to bypass the restrictions of use while driving and easily control other apps that Kenwood won't otherwise let you run, like Google Maps or a Drive app like HTC Drive. If you choose to NOT bypass then so long as you open WAZE first, you can trick the unit into letting you open other apps, but you can't go the home screen first. You'll have to open the app via recents menu.
My Software setup:
I have a rooted Android device and use an app called "second screen". I have it configured to auto turn off my phone's backlight when I plug-in to the mhl cable. This saves my battery greatly by not having to light up the display. I lose about 1% every 30 minutes or so running waze and Spotify together, very doable. Once I remove the MHL cable everything is back to normal and back-light returns.
Before I bypassed restrictions by moving my parking switch wire to the ground, I was using an android app called "overlays". (still am actually because its awesome) Its free and allows you to put an app shortcut over an running program. You setup a profile per app. For example, in Waze, I put an app overlay for both Spotify and Pandora. All you see are 2 tiny icons, size and placement of your choosing, in the corner of waze. All I have to do is tap it and it opens Spotify. I did the same for Spotify and Pandora and placed tiny app shortcuts to both Waze and Google maps to allow seamless back and forth between apps. Takes a bit to setup, but so worth it in the end.
All in all, it greatly improves enjoyment while driving. The Head units, so far, have far less appealing GUI than your cell phone. Google and Apple do great jobs of making their UI appealing to the masses and there really is no better choice, even the built-in head unit GUI, which I'm happy to bypass and show my phone instead.

How did you get it to work? I have tried it on my Pioneer model, but I don't get anything on the HU. The phone says it's in Mirrorlink mode, but I guess I don't have any apps that support it. The Pioneer version called AppRadio One works, which I now think piggybacks Mirrorlink, but it only works with one app currently (AppRadio Live).
Are there any special apps needed on the Edge beyond the built-in MirrorLink support? Is there a special launcher that gets mirrored on the HU?

There is no way to actually mirror with out MHL that I am aware of. USB does not carry video.
I do believe to use the "Mirrorlink App" you do need a pioneer supported software on your phone it will choose the apps that your phone can run and is very limited....

Actually, it can. Have a look at this:
Pioneer AppRadio One
Right now I think this technology piggybacks MirrorLink.
Also, the about MirrorLink page states the video is delivered via VNC, not HDMI. I think the JVC model you have (and other HUs with HDMI input) use the MirrorLink protocol for the touchscreen responses (usually via bluetooth), while delivering video over HDMI.
So the question is whether or not anyone has gotten the pure USB/Bluetooth version of Mirrorlink to work with the Note 4 / Edge.

Thats mirrorlink. You are doing mhl. Mirrorlink allows you to interact with phones os through the car/HU instead of fumbling with the phone.
The phone would be out of sight. Google it

Good example but old
MirrorLink Fullscreen DriveLInk Galaxy S3 Sony XAV 601BT: http://youtu.be/VoMsHIjXggU
Thanks to a bug somewhere, I was able to get full screen mirroring with Mirrorlink on a Pioneer AVH-X2700BS, Note Edge Lollipop 5.01 AT&T, and the only Mirrorlink app I could find in the Play store: miRoamer.
When I first plugged into the HU, the phone had much confusion about whether it should be in Android Car mode or MirrorLink. For some reason I chose Android Car mode as the default. I then got the menu on the HU that only showed miRoamer. I ran it, but somewhere along the way it crashed. I started the app again, and this time it displayed a dialog about crash data. Instead of acknowledging the dialog, I used the "back" function on the HU's App mode navigation, and i ended up in full screen mirroring. I was able to run Car Home Ultra in that mode, and launch my own music player and even used Waze for navigation. With the HU in Bluetooth audio mode, all sound came through the car speakers.
I'm not sure if it was a mix of the Lollipop update, crashed miRoamer, or some other factor, but before Lollipop, I never even got the miRoamer app to register itself as a Mirrorlink app. It now shows up in the system Mirrorlink settings screen and claims it's certified, which is what prompted me to give this another try. There doesn't seem to be any soft home button on the HU that works on the phone. The phone's screen is blank through this, and pressing the softkey home button on the HU only brings up the approved apps on the phone (which is only miRoamer). The only way I've been able to get back to any launcher is to use the back softkey multiple times.
Hi folks,
I got this new phone and I have a question regarding Bluetooth and Spotify. With my old smartphones(ZUK Z2 Pro or Samsung S7) connecting Spotify through Bluetooth, I can change songs/volumes on my car dash entertainment system. But with this smartphone I can not. Only thing shown is "Sony XZ Premium", which is the name of the device.
Do I need special configurations for this phone to get it work with the dash system?
Yours
I laso tested other apps like vlc etc. and none of them are controlable with the wheel controls or the car system. Seems to be a bug....
I don't have an issue with music control via my car to Deezer.
There is an general issue with bluetooth in Android 7.1.1 version. I have a problem with song information not being updated, however my car controls works, for most of the time. It seems like this problem is not present in newer cars/radios.
Yeah, I tried today also other apps like VLC/Deezer/Music app and all of them have this bug. I hope there is a fix soon. It is really annoying while driving that I can not change a song I don't want to listen to. I contaced also Sony Xperia Care, but they wanted to tell me it the car which is defective and not the smartphone...
sorry to go off on a tangent, but have you got deezer to work? I cannot for the life of me get deezer to work for me. Can you let me know what settings you are using, eg cache, etc... I have a support call open with deezer, even trying their beta but app just does not work - does not play anything...
Yeah I'm having this issue with Google Play music. Guessing it's a Bluetooth 5 codec.
Reported on Sony's forums as well,
Fingers crossed for a fix

I have the same problem, Spotify will not update the track information on what's playing. I hope there is a fix for it soon, kinda annoying. That and the wifi issues. Lucky I have unlimited data.
Mine just connected like normal. Seems like it sounds better than my last phone also. I did have a problem where it kinda froze the Bluetooth on my receiver and had to restart that. My receiver is pretty old though. Spotify working fine with it but with your same issue
Same issue with a mini cooper s 2017. I'm able to connect to the car for phone calls and contact sharing but unable to play any music via bluetooth. It seems that the phone shows as connected but the car just says as connecting. I really hope this issue is fixed soon.

Well Minis are technically BMWs so I guess the bluetooth interface is the same.
I managed to stream audio to my friend's Chevy Cruize but without the streering wheel controls (skip, vol up/down).=
Try pairing again and update your iDrive system (ask your dealership for more info about that)

After messing around with settings and bluetooth I was able to achieve a connection to media audio. If you have Google Play Music installed, that is part of the bluetooth culprit.
1. Force stop Google Play Music under app settings.
2. Turn off bluetooth.
3. Toggle bluetooth back on, and under BMW/Mini go to the media menu and select your phone, after a few seconds you should be able to achieve a bluetooth media connection and you can run Google Play Music again.
I'm not sure if this can fix the spotify issue, but I was able to get my Google Play Music to work via bluetooth on my Mini, it is kind of annoying having to do all those steps anytime I get off the car, but then again, my drives are usually pretty long so I don't mind doing it at least a couple times a day.
Let me know if that worked for you.
So I can't seem to get this to work. I downloaded Rock Scout, plugged my U11 in plugged it in, it shows "Use USB for MirrorLink" so I switch to file transfer usb and I get a new notification saying "MirrorLink Active", but my "MirrorLink" icon doesn't activate. I know the Legacy has MirrorLink v1.1, does anybody know if I have to do anything else to make MirrorLink work?
Also has anyone gotten MirrorLink to work on any car HU?
I posted a reply b4 didn't seem to work. To mirror htc u11 to a car head unit.
1. turn head unit on select mirror
2. have phone on a homepage
3. swipe up with three fingers this turns on mirroring.
4. select car entertainment system or whatever comes up on your phone.
That should mirror across it worked for me and my kenwood head unit I just installed.
remember every time you leave mirror to listen to music or directions or anything. to get back to mirroring you need to follow the steps again.
Hope that works for you as I said it worked for me. Good luck Chatto
I checked on cert.mirrorlink.com if your htc has mirrorlink and it is not showing up.
if you go on your phone settings at device connection or network connection (i don't remember exactly) can you see MirrorLink service there?
I think Subaru's mirror link version is not compatible with their crap head unit? I don't know. Yes I see "MirrorLink connection" in the USB connection settings. When plugged in, the phone thinks it's on, it just seems like Subaru's implementation doesn't recognize it, and of course a lot if not all the 2018 Subarus come with Android Auto. Guess they got tired of everyone complaining MirrorLink was foobar'd.
I stopped caring/trying. A bit of a shame actually.
What's the benefit of MirrorLink vs just bluetooth pairing? I just use bluetooth with my Kenwood, though I don't think it supports MirrorLink, and the Subi we have is a 2013, which also doesn't support MirrorLink that I know of, but also has good old bluetooth. Is there some secret i'm out of the loop about, or is it more or less trivial prefrence?
Well mirrorlink could let me use, say Waze on my headunit display instead of buying a mount and mounting my phone. The gist of mirrorlink is basically you can get your phone display on the headunit. But yes bluetooth works.
Anyway for those interested in what I see and the "version" of software on my headunit:
Settings showing mirrorlink active: http://imgur.com/a/cNymR
Notifications saying mirrorlink is on: http://imgur.com/a/TYMfM
my headunit version info: http://imgur.com/a/5cl14
Maybe its a version issue and I need an update, but bottom line is, if Subaru says they have it, and my phone has it, it should work. However judging by the feedback around the internet, it would appear Subaru is at fault here somehow. So shame on them for choosing poor technology and/or having engineers implement it poorly.
Double post. Sorry

You are correct, I didn't see it on there either. But it's clearly on the device. Check my post above. Maybe it has 1.2 on it and Subaru only supports 1.1. (They had the same issue with 1.0 and 1.1). I sent HTC a question about it so we'll see.

On the chance that I'm asking more or less the same question, I'll ask it here. If it's unrelated, let me know, and I'll start a new thread.
When I plug my S8+ into my 2017 Chevy Tahoe, the "Projection" button on MyLink turns to "Android Auto", and if I touch it, sure enough Android Auto runs instead of MirrorLink. Is there any way to get plain ole' MirrorLink to run, instead? I tried uninstalling Android Auto, but then when I plug the phone in, it just says "Hey, dummy, you uninstalled Android Auto; click here to reinstall it." There is no way in Apps to disable A/A; the Disable button is an Uninstall button.
Thanks.
