Don't see a forum for Samsung s4 google edition so I am posting here.
Anyone else having an issue when trying to activate this phone on ATT? They act like they never heard of it, give all these lame "well we cannot gaurantee it will work since it's unlocked" and then telling me their system will not allow them to put a LTE plan on it..
wtf?

Noticed a couple threads similar over the various s4 sections.
I'm in Canada but know that my device is not required by my provider it enable data. I change devices about every 8 months and can just swap out the SIM and I'm good to go.
If AT&T has issues with the Google edition s4 couldn't you just say that it's a normal s4 bought of eBay or Craig's list to have an lte data plan enabled?

No because in the IMEI comes up as unlocked device in their system and they pretty much are trying to get you off the phone at that point. Tried 3 diffrent reps and asked to be connected to next tier tech support.
Another update.. I gave them an IMEI from a note 2 i have.. LTE plan went on fine.. but the phone doesn't get anything more than hspa+.. 4mb down. THis is BS.. if they cannot connect the phone or I have to jump through hoops like I had to with the NExus 4 (which i had to call in like every month to have something reset) I am going to just send it back Not worth the headache.

Might want to give it a little bit. Or go for a walk/drive. Sometimes it can take time to lock on to the correct tower

Doubt it.. got escalated up to manager,.. basically you will not get lte on these devices. Only on att branded phones. That is the message I am being told directly. This is total BS I f'n hate ATT. Whoever is buying this for ATT beware.. your going to have a bad time. I am sending this right back as it's just as crippled as the nexus 4 with this carrier.
I bought a I9505 and had same issue (no LTE).
I have 3 lines with AT&T and I could watch the AT&T website update as I used different SIMs in the I S4, the Vivid and a Nexus 7 (3G).
I was lucky that I bought the i S4 from Amazon so no problem with refund.
I suspect if you had a never used SIM and a S4 IMEI you could get LTE.
One line was ready for an upgrade.
I got the AT&T S4 and used an 'old' SIM and connected to LTE with no problem.
As soon as I bought the AT&T S4 an email was sent and it provided a process for on line registration of the S4.
I've never seen that before and didn't do it.
I got my GE on AT&T today. My notification bar says LTE. I ran some speed tests and got about 10 mbps down but I am at work in a poor reception area. When I get home I'll try it but I better get at least 40 mpbs down or this is being returned

Sheriffa, how did you activate it when yuo got it?
I ended up giving them an imei from a note 2 and they said they were able to put an LTE plan on.. yet the signal bar shows H.

I didn't have to activate it. I simply plugged in my sim card and it worked.

I am going to just return this I think if I try elsewhere later and stil get slow speeds. Just was shocked multiple people saying they do not support it. I even contacted google and let them know. Doubt they care.
Just get a imei number from a att phone and give it to them, it'll work. I had to do this with my galaxy nexus to get full hspa+

What should we be getting for DL/UL speeds?
Why would you call to activate it? Just pop in your Sim card and your good to go. I never had an issue doing this and I get lots of different phones unlocked and from different countries some times.
But I agree why is there no forums for this phone? Does motochopper root method work on this phone and I assume we can use T-Mobile version recoveries and Roms fine on this phone? Does anybody know? Sorry to get off topic.

If you already have a LTE SIM on ATT from another phone just pop it into the GE and it will work just fine. If you do not you will have to go through the process the OP is taking about as the IMEI is not loaded as a LTE device and they will need to put one in for you to activate the LTE.
Saves a lot of time and headaches to already have an LTE SIM for ATT.

Just FYI if you do this and have tethering/hotspot in your plan then you will need to call AT&T so they can add the new IMEI. THey will also delete the old one on file, so if you're into swapping SIMs (I like to go between the iPhone 5 and S4, although in the past few weeks it's been all S4), then you won't be able to turn on hotspot/tethering without arranging a workaround or calling AT&T every time.

check to see if you have the right APNs.
I saw over in the HTC ONE forum that the GE came with a weird APN.

Take it to ATT store. They are pretty good compared to technical support over the phone.

I guess is more accurate to say was previously on ATT LTE with a phone. Every should know if they have been on ATT LTE already. If not you have to spend some time on the phone with ATT.
just do it and swap the sim card in. i have never had a problem with service or data when getting a new device and putting the AT&T sim in it. went from S3 to S4 that way, also S3 to Sony Xperia Z, Xperia Z to S4, S4 to S3, etc.
Does anyone here know anything about the regional carrier nTelos and its' CDMA network? I'd love to get the Nexus 5 but I'm not sure it'll work on my carrier.

I wouldn't bet on it. They may register it for text and talk, but getting data and mms working has always been an issue. It can be done, but it's a lot of grunt/guess work

Thanks. I was afraid of that. Do you know of any reliable way to set APN's on jellybean or KitKat?
nTelos has LTE launched in a few markets, and now they are selling LTE devices in Richmond even though the LTE network isn't up. (Phones are running on 3G). In theory, if the device is unlocked, you should be able to put an nTelos LTE SIM in the device and it should work. (I went by my local Richmond store and got a SIM card for my iPhone 5 and upgraded my wife's S2 to a Moto X). I can switch the SIMs back and forth between the two devices with no issues. I am trying to find someone with an unlocked N5 here in my area to test my theory, but the only person I know who has one is on T Mobile, and we work opposite schedules, so it's almost impossible to meet up.

You might not have to wait as long as you think. nTelos has launched LTE in Bluefield and Bexley in WV. The person who I spoke with also said that the remainder of the network should be launched by EOY 2014. I saw on an investor relations report that the actual claim is 70% POP coverage. The rumor that the rep told me was hopefully June/July for LTE here in Richmond.
I'll keep you posted on the N5!

Once you do meet up, the T-mobile / Unlocked aspect shouldn't really be an issue as the T-mobile device is the same unlocked device that everyone else in North America has. So far, no locked N5's have turned up

Well, that's positive news! nTelos uses band class 10 for CDMA and LTE bands 2, 4, and 25, so in theory, when an nTelos SIM is placed in the phone, it should register and work without issues.

Yep, but theory and practice are 2 different things
I do like the snap dragon 800 though, meaning there is only a requirement to have 2 devices worldwide. I'm pretty sure soon, qualcomm will be able to support more than the maximum 7 on one radio chip and maybe soon we'll start to see one worldwide device per release. That would be great. Until some other country decides to shun global standards and invents their own band

I do. I am an nTelos dealer and flasher with my own flashing site going live as we speak. It can be done if you have CDMA workshop, otherwise I take mail-ins.
That's awesome! Link to your site? I'll check out when I can. I actually do have CDMA Workshop but no idea how to use it or what all I need to set up on the phone with it. I was afraid to go ahead and buy the phone because I didn't know if I could get it working.
Ok... So I had a friend attempt to try a Sprint variant of the N5 which he got at Best Buy... No dice. Couldn't figure out the carrier settings and it wouldn't make calls either. I tried a Play Store edition yesterday... Also, no dice. Same situation.... I have another friend that works at T Mobile that is going to grab one for me to try. I'm not giving up hope!!! I'm sure there is a way to get it to work, but when you go to network settings, if only allows you to connect to AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T Mobile and 311 660 which I think is Metro PCS. There has to be a way to change the settings to be able to recognize the nTelos SIM card. The N5 supports CDMA Band Classes 0/1/10 and LTE bands 2/4/25, which should cover nTelos.... Not sure if the device is domestically locked to those certain carriers, and the international version would be a better try (I think it is only GSM though), but if someone can brainstorm a work around, I'd love to hear it!
Ok... Here we go... I might have stumbled upon something here on XDA that might help us out. I'm still researching it, but I wanted to post my findings here so that if anyone else s interested in looking into it, you can. You may have already seen this, and someone here commented about CDMA Workshop, and that is involved, so maybe (s)he could chime in and give us a helping hand as well?
The first link I came across was:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2619312
This looks to be a trial and error guide. I MAY be able to get my hand on some of the files that may be needed with a little digging around and some schmoozing with nTelos employees, so we will see what happens.
I posted in that thread to see if it will only operate on CDMA, or if it will switch over to LTE when it goes live (as long as there is a sim card in it). Waiting on a reply, so hopefully we will hear something back soon!

Ok well good deal! I hope you can get it working. Little word of advice though, all the phones are the same. Sprint, Play Store, doesn't matter they're the same.
Ok, well, I have gotten my hands on a Verizon S3 (boo for the locked bootloader), and when I throw my nTelos SIM card it in, it works for talk and text immediately, which isn't surprising, b/c the device is unlocked. You do get the Non-Verizon SIM message in the notification bar though. Well, anyways, I was able to take my jailbroken iPhone 5 and use an APN editor and recover the APN settings for it. I entered those into the S3 and BLAM! It worked! Data kicked over immediately!
Now here's my thought process... The S3 took the SIM for talk and text without issue, while the N5 wouldn't even read for that.... Even though the N5 is supposedly unlocked, could it still be locked down to the bigger providers, and not allow a SIM card from a smaller carrier, such as nTelos? I have heard of rumors of AIO Wireless SIM cards working, but that is an AT&T MVNO. I haven't seen anywhere posted that someone from, say, Alaska Wireless, or Cspire, or Republic Wireless using the N5.
Now, if there's a way to "unlock" the device to work with additional carriers, that would be great, but I'm not sure where to start even looking for any of that information. most comments you read about the N5 state that it is unlocked to use anyone's SIM card, which obviously isn't true. The phone seems like it wants to pre-configure itself with the SIM card. I did see a thread somewhere that people are able to get the N5 to work on Straight Talk on LTE with redoing the APN settings.
I need to get my hands on another N5 and replace the APN settings with the nTelos LTE APN settings and see if that works. If I can get that done, I'll let everyone know!!!
Ok... Here we go again... I'm posting here more of a "think out loud" type of post. I was digging through the Nexus 5 Q&A thread, and I came across something that might help out. *#*#4636#*#* That is supposedly how you get into the settings for an LG device to be able to change it's network type. I'm wondering that since I missed doing that with the last one that I had my hands on, if that might be why it didn't read my SIM card. I went by my local nTelos store last night to see if it worked on all LG devices since they have the F7 on display. I was able to go in and change it while I was playing with the phone. Some of the settings completely borked the reception, which is what I was hoping, but others worked just fine. I'm going to try and go by a local Best Buy later today and try it out on a display model there to see what I come up with. I'll post back here once I figure something else out.
Hey all, considering getting a new phone, and this one seems like a beast. Currently have a pixel 2XL. On Verizon.
given that there aren't many choices for an unlocked bootloader on Verizon, how is this one running? Call quality okay? Any problems with the CDMA data? with all those things in mind, any advice on what model or what source I should use to purchase the phone? Thanks.
Running fine, the unlocked version works on all the carriers, popped a sprint Sim and it worked for 30 seconds before Sim locked up unforantly no support on sprint unless one plus 7 pro 5g. T-mobile was terrible what ever reason, full bars 1mb speeds or call couldn't be placed. Best place to buy is direct oneplus.com
Yes it does. Got mine from OnePlus website. But Id recommend looking into how to tweak the sim cards settings to work better on verizon. Once I did that, ive been getting way faster network speeds. If you need help doing that let me know
id love to know about the sim settings. im on verizon... phone works better than i thought it would. I expected more areas with poor to no reception... instead i basically get the same coverage i did with my s10, but if i can make it better, i sure want to.
thanks

Likewise I would love to hear the tweaks for Verizon.
There is no cdma data. I've not missed it much except in the forests of Oregon. Turning on roaming got me service though on the extended network.
WiFi calling and Verizon video chat doesn't work.
Other than the pixel, about the only other choice on Verizon would be an unbranded Moto.
Current Note8 user on ATT (phone locked to carrier). I pre-ordered a Note20 Ultra from Samsung direct, unlocked version. Have been off XDA really for a couple years and not rooting/modding much lately but have read that ATT will not allow unlocked phones on their network to use WiFi Calling and/or VoLTE. If true, are there workaround options for me (assuming I stick w ATT as the carrier I mean) to get these to work, or should I cancel the unlocked model and order the ATT version? Was hoping to root eventually and remove bloatware / play w custom ROMs again on the Ultra etc etc. - that is why I ordered an unlocked version.

That's bizarre. I am rethinking this unlocked route. I must have wifi calling since signal at the house is terrible in my area. I don't need the drama of uncertainty if this will work or not. Might as well cancel the unlocked one and just upgrade via att. Oy. Wtf is with att these days? They lost my directv account last year and now their wireless policies are looking like a royal pita.
I don't think you have to worry .... ATT seems to consistently allow Samsung unlocked devices to have carrier functions

I strongly recommend switching your order to the ATT model. I got my note 10+ unlocked based off the suggestions found here saying that flashing the att firmware would give me all the features, and I've been through a year of headaches.
For a little wile i was able to enjoy wifi calling, voicemail and VOLTE, but after my first software update the features were lost. i was able to get them back briefly by putting my sim back in an old Att phone and keeping it for a day or two, but that trick never lasted past a week. I've tried re-flashing the software, switching back to unlocked and then back to ATT, basically anything i could think of and it never worked.
calling ATT didn't help either, as the reps gave me a canned line about not supporting outside phones. the whole reason I'm updating to the 20 ultra is to just get my phone fully functional with an ATT model

Thanks darth. Yeah, I switched to the att version. Hate the hidden tracking bloatware etc that comes with it but must have a very workable phone for daily work calls and wifi calling is a must. No drama is my motto these days. Thank you for reporting your experience.
I had the same situation with my unlocked Pixel 4 XL, keep calling ATT until I got the right person to modify my sim to allow WiFi Calling to work, that's my plan when I get my unlocked 20 Ultra.
I'm not a gent, but I doI have the Note 20 Ultra in for review and am using it with an AT&T SIM. VoLTE works, no option for WiFi calling.

What worries me is the 5G. Will unlocked work for ATT 5G?
It does on my unlocked Galaxy S20+ 5G. The Note 20 Ultra is a ways to release and their system doesn't yet correctly identify the IMEI, so I can't say for sure what will happen after release day.

Hi Lisa,
Your reviews are the best, so thank you first of all. Can you check if it has any eSIM capabilities? Supposedly S20 was going to get an update to allow eSIM use in US but that never happened...
Thanks . I'm not seeing anything under connection settings on our US unlocked Note 20 Ultra (there's no IMEI listed or cellular network option listed under connection settings when no nano SIM is installed. EsimClient is running on the phone, which makes me think the hardware must be there. EsimClient is not running on my GS 20+ unlocked.

eSIMClient running gives me hope that we will get eSIM support in an update...Still perplexed how or why Samsung has gone out of the way to disable eSIM on US variants when Apple, Google support it.

Ha! Thanks Lisa (love your tech vids!!) - I switched to the ATT version. Supposed to be here 8/21. I can't take a chance with wifi calling being borked, or that just that I may need to Odin-flash updates or CSC packs periodically to keep up with the monthly patches (ie force an unlocked unit to keep working on ATT's network if my previous firmware gets overwritten etc. I mean). I guess as I got older I went from a tech pioneer and adopter to just an end user LOL.... I just need it to work. Maybe I can do that package remove thingy and chop the bloatware periodically... we shall see once the community gets these units and starts their dev magic for us.
I guess I will need to make an appt at the local ATT store in a week to get on a new 5G plan from my current 4G one to take advantage of the coming speeds.
You're welcome- glad you enjoy our vids! With AT&T, you can simply change your plan online, no need to visit a store. The mid and high tier unlimited plans include 5G.

I flashed my unlocked Note 10 plus and didnt get wifi calling, visual voicemail, VOLTE.....only reason I am up grading is to get an ATT version, and to skip all the hassle of an unlocked version. Never again.

Could you tell me more. I have the US unlocked note 20 ultra, I put an AT&T sim in (from my note 9 unlocked) and I can't find an option to turn on wifi calling. I pretty much gave up on feature like this, because I would rather have the unlocked phone, but if it works now maybe I am missing something.
Thanks

The g100/edge s are listed as no Verizon support, but I was wondering if anyone has tried. They have most of the Verizon 4g bands and 2 of the 5g bands
If anyone is curious about this I have not confirmed but I did find a post where someone tried on reddit. Everything worked except receiving texts. Verizon was unable to troubleshoot because the IMEI was not white listed in their system. After doing some reading this leads me to believe cdmaless needs to be programmed on the SIM prior to putting it in the g100/edge s and it may work. This would require a cdmaless "mule" phone to preprogram the sim prior to installation. If I can find a phone to borrow I may purchase one and give it a shot.
Same problem here. I love the g100, amazing phone especially for the price, but cannot receive texts and Verizon refuses to help with an "unsupported" phone, even though it supports all the bands necessary for operation. 4G works, calls work, and sending SMS and MMS work. I'm willing to try whatever ideas to get this going. Been riding off my old phone as a hotspot for the g100 lately.
ah nice to see I'm not the only one in this situation. You already pulled the trigger though! If you can find a whitelisted gsm phone to swap your sim into and reprogram first you might be up and running. I've been trying to find the cheapest mule to try this with. Will update if a come up with one.
I'm not sure I follow. Why would another phone make this one work?
And I guess what are the requirements of the other phone? I could probably convince a friend to let me swap if it'll work
I'm not 100% sure but I think the issue you are having is the way the line is provisioned. It is most likely set to use the old CDMA radios (the g100 does not have them). Verizon has a cdmaless provisioning setting to get around this, but they can/will only do it for CDMAless phones they have added to their white list (while having compatible 4g and one 5g band the g100 is not on the list). If you put your sim in a white listed CDMAless phone you can get the proper provisioning put on by Verizon before putting it in the g100. This should fix in bound text
Ooh very interesting. I did find stuff for 'cdmaless' in my search to get it working, but asking Verizon to add it yielded terrible results.
So it seems like the cheapest options for this might be the Moto E (2020) or the Moto G Power (2021). I might try to pick one up next week to see if this theory works.
nice! My brother has a s21 which I think will work. Trying to find one that doesn't take 2 months to get
So I ordered a G Power, swapped sim cards and it couldn't receive texts. Activated on the Verizon website, which needed to text me a verification code, hilarious.
Anyway, it added the feature
Code:
CDMA-LESS DEVICE PROVISIONING
to the sim, popped it back into the G100 and... it works!
Great suggestion, drock3260
So when I originally tried to get this to work on Verizon and they insisted that CDMA-less doesn't exist, well, I guess they lied.
So uh, does anyone want to borrow a G Power for 5 mins?

Thanks for posting about this! I am on V and strongly considering importing an Edge 20 Fusion. This thread gives me hope that it will actually work.
yeah according to kimovil it has compatible bands. If you are still thinking of pulling the trigger good luck.
What about MVNOs using Verizon towers? I plan to use US Mobile SuperLTE. Will text messages work?
It only has the one main 5g band so no I don't believe Verizon mvnos are gonna work. I didn't really care about 5g as there are few towers around me, but I have had great 4g coverage with text messaging
I can give you the best and most accurate answer. I live in America I have a moto g100 there's only one way to get this phone and that is to purchase it through Motorola USA one model option only and that's a blue Moto g100 with 8 gigs of RAM 128 gigs of memory model number xt2125-4 the name of the firmware is North American retail absolutely no bloatware because it's straight from the manufacturer not a cell phone carrier and for absolutely everything to work on the phone 4G 5G the only cell phone carrier that works on is the T-Mobile network. You can use it on the AT&t network but you're not going to get Wi-Fi calling or the 5G Network. It is a GSM only. Absolutely no CDMA nothing will work on the Verizon network. It is the only phone on the American market that dual SIM. It does have NFC. A dedicated Google Assistant button with the fingerprint scanner on the side. One issue though the North American retail will probably be the last one to receive Android 12 but because this is the United States the Android 12 version we get will be very stable
I recently got a Chinese 8/128 Edge S (XT2125-4), and 4G calls/data/sms all just work for me on Verizon.
I had previously activated my SIM card in a OnePlus 8 Pro. So in my case it was already set up for CDMA-less / LTE-only service, and I just had to move the SIM card over to the Edge S and it started working right away.
I've never noticed the phone say it was connected to 5G, but I'm not sure if I need a new sim card, or if there aren't any 5G towers in my area (or both.)
