I'm just curious, and still have not found the answer I was looking for via search.
Can the 1.3mp camera be replaced with a better a 5mp camera on the G Tablet?...
Assuming The hardware exists, and that it is compatible, is possible I am sure a new kernel is needed, what about the possibility of adding 720 recording like the hd2(android version) or the nexus one?
Any thoughts would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.
I would personally love to see the addition of a 5 or 8MP rear-facing camera. Yeah, I know it would involve some massive hardware hacking, but it would be a nice addition.
Is that pain and suffering really worth the upgrade? There would be no way to use the camera effectively because you would have to have you back to what you were shooting. My opinion would be to go buy an HD video camera for $150. Cheaper and easier than hacking your tablet up.
This is one thing that frustrates me about my G-tablet. I took some videos of the family out in the snow the other day and it was a real pain trying to capture the video since the camera only faces forward. The video turned out alright since we were outside and in good light. I've found that unless you are in really good lighting, the camera does not perform well. The quality didn't even compare to most of the devices that are out on the market now (latest Android 720p phones, iPhone/iPod Touch).
I'm looking forward to the NI Adam's swivel camera. It should be really nice for not only video chatting (front-facing) but also being able to film other things from different angles. For example, it would be nice to angle the camera almost completely to the back to film other people in front of you or angle the camera perpendicular to the device if you want to lay it on the table and do a timed photo or something similar. The camera is supposed to be higher resolution on the NI Adam, but higher MP doesn't necessarily equal higher quality so I'm crossing my fingers.
I wonder if now that we have kernel source there wouldn't be some way to add support for usb webcams? I imagine the only reason no one has done it yet is because most android devices don't have usb ports.

The FF camera is only meant for video chatting.
First off, thanks for the replies. I was looking for feedback and info and I need more, please keep them coming.
Second, I too like the idea of a rear cam pics and video, and yes I understand I wouldn't be able to take pics without my back facing, I still want it to be a web cam; The question is can I replace that cam with a better one, even if it may only be a 2.0 or 3mp? If you are going to do video chat, or maybe even streaming videos would a higher mp camera help or hurt?

There's no way to install a rear facing camera. All these projects you mentioned have been looked into by others and have basically determined not worth it.

If they all have been looked into and determined not worth the trouble, then I will concentrate my efforts elsewhere, I wont waste my time.

FWIW, My Odroid T had a functioning USB webcam running android 2.1 and then 2.2. There were some driver issues, but they got them worked out.

It is interesting that the telephoto (2x) lens on the Mi A1 is nominated as an ov 13880 i, also from OmniVision has no known spec sheet and is not in any of the end of life docs (EOL) on the web site I can find.
One site did come up with a editorial noting the camera but noted it as a 13mp sensor and vastly better frame rates for video than Xaiomi claims. See link below.

I never said that. Reread my post. I said you need to change the lens in manual mode to get optical zoom. Clicking on the 1x button from the main screen only offers digital zoom.

I really didn't know till now, I wonder why they put that option for digital zoom there and not for optical zoom, that's pointless.

One possible use for it is to assist with checking focus, but other than that I would never use digital zoom.
If someone had a method of linking that 1x option to actually changing to the tele lens, that would be a nice modification.
2x button should change to optical zoom in very bright light only (sunny outside). If you want to force it, you need to use manual mode. I guess it's because tele lens has slower aperture and you have to raise the ISO or slower shutter speed or both to get a picture = grainy blurry photos.

There isn't a big change in aperture from the wide lens to the tele lens. I do find that the tele lens is softer than the wide on standard focus. But I am still of the initial belief that the auto focus on my phone is off in lower light and possibly in the tele... I have more testing to do as time permits.

You're right but I think no one is actually aware of this I mean even I wasn't until today.

I think this was the easiest and cheapest solution to add a dual camera setup to a phone since no R&D had to be involved in the build. You can simply buy it and it has ready to go drivers for Android.
This phones works great, battery life is impressive, screen on time is really good (more than 7 hours for me) but the killer feature is the camera, so cheap... I bought this phone because my Galaxy S7 died(almost took fire on USB port) and needed a phone really quick.. but, honestly the camera is crap. I thought it was better camera when I was reading the reviews that afternoon my S7 died... next day I purchased A1 and ... suprise, bad camera was included!
Does anyone knows if using the Google camera api improves the quality?

They advertised it as flagship dual camera but lol, I wasnt expecting so much from it tho. But yeah, look around in this forum, there are guides to install pixel cam with/without root. And the picture quality imo is 10x better than stock ones (in low lights too!) . Explore buddy, explore! ?

Why you buy a phone for like 1/3 of the S7 price in the first place? But yes, the hardware is good, the stock app is the problem, GCam pics have double size compared to stock taken ones.

Because it was January, S8 were 'old' by then.... and S9 weren't launched yet.... so, in the meantime I decided to buy the cheap phone which everyone was talking about.... end of story, by April I ended up buying a mirrorless camera and taking a photography course online.
I kept the Xiaomi Mi A1, it has been updated OTA every month, latest security patch every month(not like Samsung that takes 6 months for security update and almost a year for Android version upgrade). Other good thing about the 'cheap phone' is that battery lasts whole day and more... it's crazy to remember that with the Galaxy S7 I had to recharge the phone by mid afternoon, now I arrive home by 7pm with 50% battery. On weekends I use the phone a lot more and easily I can get 7 hours of Screen On Time, point for the Xiaomi A1 (the S7 struggled to reach 5 hours).

enable google2api. put whatever gcam you like (i have a scrubber version and arnova, but im still checking them out).
not only have AMAZING results with HDR+, i actually can film video with EIS, slowmo WITH sound, blurred selfies, its ...amazing.
i really do not understand why they didnt enable this thing from the begining...

The difference between stock camera and google camera api is night and day.

I'm still on the fence of where or not to buy the Nex S. Generally speaking I'm convinced by it but even though I don't use the camera that much, it is still quite important.
Looking at reviews and test pictures it's worse than my OnePlus 3's which just seems absurd to me.
So is there any chance the camera could improve with future software updates or is the camera sensor itself just terrible?
And do we have to rely on Vivo for updates or could a 3rd party app improve the camera?

When Vivo puts out updates on this phone it always gives brief notes on what's being updated. I've seen camera updates in their notes with three of the past updates they've put out. I'm not a big user of cameras so I can't give you anything more than that. No pictures to compare the initial camera software release with the latest update. We'll have to wait for a reviewer on youtube to compare initial camera software with the latest release.

Forget the stock app with any phones except

Do you have the phone? Would you be able to post some comparison shots? I tried googling for some but haven't been able to find any.
I mean software can only do so much, right? So if the Camera is bad in terms of hardware, there isn't really much we can do about it, right? I unfortunately don't know a whole lot about cameras.

Pretty sure it's way better than Oneplus 3. Its more than sufficient in its performance & if u know bit of quick tweaking on snapseed, you can pretty much get top notch photo with it in same comparison to note 8. It's better than Oneplus 6 btw. I am saying from my own 1st hand experience ofcourse.

Hi, i do have the Vivo nex s.
My previous phone was the oneplus3.
The camera of the OP3 is way better.
Im thinking that's even my OPO had a better camera.
The phone is lacking focus, the AI messes up everthing andere even in 'profesional' mode the pictures are not better.
I like how the phone looks and feels, if you have a lot of patience setting up (if you have the Chinese version like i do) then this might be the phone for you.
If you want a phone with a good camera.. dont buy this phone

I hope will be added later with software update. S10, P30 pro and Mi 9 can record video with wide angle camera. I don't understand what OnePlus thinking..
Release seems a bit rushed to me. Where is the AOD? Why can I not record with the wide angle lens?

Seriously, enough of the AOD. I have the 6T using a custom ROM module and I turned off AOD. It has notification edge and an app helps keep it pulsing until I acknowledge it. The same goes for the 7 Pro. It was brought up in the launch event and has edge lighting for notifications.

Im not sure if it's me but objects at even 15cm take a long time to focus, and after that I can only get to about x4.6 magnification for use able images. Note: about 15 cm is the closest I can get on x1 magnification, anything closer the image looses focus.
Once the x5 lens kicks in you cannot even see what you are taking a photo of.
Is it just me? I've attached a couple of examples. x1, x4.6, x5.
Anything above x4.7 the focus length completely changes and everything gets blurry

That's correct behavior. At present (firmware .121) there's no dedicated macro mode. There's some rumors about a macro mode coming with the next firmware updates - but you should take that with a grain of salt (don't rely on that).
My guess on the slow focus: This is caused by the low distance, too close for the fast laser autofocus to work, so the P40 Pro needs to rely on "traditional" autofocus taking some more time.
Once the x5 lens kicks in you cannot even see what you are taking a photo of.

Of course, because everything over 5 x should (unfortunately that's not always the case) invoke the telephoto lens - and the name might suggest it's meant for telephotos, not for close-distance shots.
The telephoto lens just needs more distance to the object to focus.
Huawei are aware of the bug as we raised it with them.
If you zoom in 10x you can't focus on anything close up either.
Update 10.1.0.131 has really better close-up shots.

Yeah .131 adds AI Mode "Close-Up" which really improves the macro mode. It's still not as good as the P30 Pro's Macro Mode because of the lens types but it's a vast improvement on what the P40 Pro was doing before the .131 update

Wierd I have. 131 but I didn't see the close up ai function come up. Will try again. But you are right even compared to my p20 pro it isn't as close
No macro lens no macro pictures. Stop trying to do something the phone is not capable of. Use rhe 50mp ai focus with loads of light instead and boom you can zoom in with great detail

Ive got the p40 pro and ive tried taking a few shots at different zooms and im not really facing that issue i know curently theres no super macro embedded on this emui version but im confident itll come

Central problem is people being unaware of the way cameras work.
In another thread, there was someone complaining about "unfocused" picture parts - parts in the background and foreground, outside the depth of field.
OF COURSE that parts are out of focus - because they are out of focus.
Even after lengthy explanations he wasn't willing to change his mind.
If they ain't got any bokeh, they complain about the flat pics. If they got bokeh, they complain about the pics not being flat.
Similar here: I see users complaining about the laws of nature. I guess I'd spend most of my time studying online instructions on how to make letter bombs if I worked at Huawei's customer support.
Right in this thread: I explained the camera behaves just the way it should be, there is NO bug. Response: "Huawei are aware of the bug as we raised it with them. If you zoom in 10x you can't focus on anything close up either. "

THis isnt really a complain about the cameras, i fully understand how they work for the most part. However the focal distance for this phone isnt very good. Clearly this is by design....i wanted to now if others have the same issue. As its a step down from the previous p series -> non-sensical when releasing new and better versions.
. 131 bring a closecup feature which immitates macro photography. With proper lighting you can get similar results with p30 pro.
Even after the update, the close up is terrible. My Samsung s9+ could take incredible close-up pics... I'm quite shocked at the lack of capability

They are unbelievable ppl here only supporting a low software phone which cNt focus right on a normal distance with a simple tap. Every one here uses pro mode to get a subject completly focus.. And they happy for that

I didn't use the "Pro mode" because I cannot manually focus as there are no focusing aids like focus peaking.
I used the PLAIN NORMAL PHOTO MODE for that 50 Euro picture, nothing else.
By the way: "Pro mode" wouldn't help at all because you cannot overcome the physical limitations of the lens just by using a different software mode.

TRY FOR YOURSELF if it's possible to better focus on close objects using the "Pro mode". Surprise! You'll find out that it's EXACTLY THE SAME minimum focus distance.

Huawei implemented that "AI macro mode" because clueless people like you, not willing to listing, not willing to accept the laws of physics, won't stop ranting about things they don't understand and don't know how to cope with. So Huawei tries to find solutions even for those who don't know how to handle a camera correctly. This is a courtesy, not an admittance of faults.

Puffin617: Use normal photo mode with 5 x zoom. Increase the distance to your subject until it's properly focused, make sure your hands don't shake. Don't even try manual focusing in Pro mode, it's close to impossible due to the lack of focusing aids like focus peaking. That's something Huawei indeed screwed.
