Use Handcent SMS which will give you iPhone style threaded conversations with bubbles, or HTC style plain threaded conversations with fully adjustable colours.
In the calendar just swipe up or down to change the month.
I absolutely swear by handcent. I've been using it since it came out!

mingoid is referring to the conversation style under settings for Handcent, not the inbuilt sms application. Once you choose which conversation style you want, you can change the colors under bubble settings.

one thing I forgot is there any type of Equalizer for the music player? like adjust bass, treble, hip hop, rock, etc.
Hey all,
I really liked the fact that i could see the facebook status of the person that i was texting at the top of the thread in 2.1. Is there anyway that you could get that same functionality in Froyo?
haha i just noticed its not there! LOL nice catch. Bump to this
i still have it
Would porting the messaging app from 2.1 to 2.2 be the only way we could do this? Would this even be possible? Because i know a lot of people use Handcent but the reason i dont use it is because i like being able to see the persons most recent facebook status at the top of my thread

I hate the new messaging app. So cluttered and messy with pictures for EACH message. Not to mention the gray box for me!

It's a gray box for you because your sim doesn't list your number. If you see your number under Settings -> About -> Status. If it lists your number under My Number you can just add yourself as a contact with a picture and it will show up. Otherwise there are some phones that allow you to add the number. I personally used a simcard-reader/writer for my computer.
Yeah i have seen the messanging app on my freinds phone and i dont really mind the fact that there is a picture for each message, but I would really miss seeing the persons most recent facebook status because I might not necessarily see thier status on my news feed. The lack facebook status on the messanging app is the only reason I havent flashed the froyo test build

Idk maybe some info on a possible backport? The new messanging app is not as clean as the old one in my opinion

I know, but thanks for your help. I had to use an old SE phone to change my SIM number. But seriously this is a really large oversight on Google's part. Like I am suppose to make a contact of myself just so I can have a picture there?? That's ridiculous.
Is also like this. Much prefer the messaging app from cyanogenmod /:

No it's not and I've been making self contacts on my phones for the better part of a decade.
You people ***** about the stupidest things lol.
Well my friend tried yesterday to simply uninstall the 2.2 messanging app and to simply install the 2.1 APK using ASTRO and it failed to install. Im not sure if pushing with ADB will work but just trying to simply delete and install definitely didnt work
I want the popup window for quick-reply to come up at first and be able to use it. But if the phone is locked, the popup comes up, but there is not user interaction; is there a way that the popup could just close by itself and only appear in notifications window? What happens now is that when the phone is unlocked, the messages are in the open windows, it would be better if it was in notifications only. Like the way BiteSMS does it for the iphone notification, that the window has the option to be closed by itself and the message comes in notifications only.
Go into handcent settings and change your notification settings.
Which setting will make it act where the popup will initially come, but will disappear if no action is taken?
Try requesting this feature in the gosms xda thread

Under 'Notifications,' "Quick Popup" is OFF, "Screen on for popup" is ON, and lastly "Screen Timeout" is set to ~30 Seconds. This was default, and on my G2 it does what you are asking.
I would much prefer Go SMS. Very neat and theme-able. You can disable pop ups for SMSs and disable the option to light up the screen if so desired in the settings of the app. That is just my 2 cents

Which pretty much describes Handcent except Handcent only makes a messaging app and the devs are not spread across multiple apps.
Was a Handcent user forever , however lately I have been using GOSMS PRO and I think i like it better.

yes and I've had both Handcent and Go SMS Pro, the look and feel of Go SMS Pro is much more pleasing to me. They both do the same things, i'd stick with Go SMS Pro, which is my current SMS app I rely on.

agreed, gosms is the way to go. In my experience it was more stable than handcent, and had better/more themes available. Both have really similar features though.

Hi there,
Since the new update of Facebook Messenger, the functionality of sending texts (SMS) has been removed. As I don't like holding on to an older version that will get outdated one time, I'm wondering if there is any text app like it.
I have searched dozens of pages on Google, including threads on xda, but none seem to have what I'm looking for. The closest I have come to is GO Sms (which I'm using now) and SMS Ninja (I even tried Paranoid Android with it's Halo functionality) Both SMS apps have the same chathead-like popup of FB Messenger which you can press to open, but once you close the message, the popup is gone.
In Facebook Messenger, the chathead-popup stays on the screen until you drag it to the bottom to delete the overlay from the screen.
Do you happen to know an app that provides me with what I'm looking for?
Thanks in advance for your time!
I'm afraid I don't have an answer but I'm curious why you want it to stay open? I never used the Facebook messenger and am wondering if I missed some functionality.

What I like about Facebook Messenger is that I can open the chathead, read the message, and don't have to reply instant because the popup would close. I can just close the bubble, go on with what I was doing and reopen the bubble whenever I want to reply
Ok, thanks. Not sure if that would suit me or not as I've never tried it. I avoid Facebook on principle although I grudgingly created an account some time ago.
Maybe you could give Portal a try. Personally I'm more interested in the multi-window function it provides.

Ninja SMS popups work almost identically to Facebook's chat heads. You just have to click the collapse arrow instead of the close button.

Oh I didn't know that! Although I find the popup layout of Ninja SMS pretty ugly, I guess I'll have to live with that for now.
I'm gonna give Portal a shot as well once I get home, although I'm not sure if it has the permanent popup functionality that I'm looking for.
Thanks to both of you for your helpful replies! More suggestions always welcome
Hey guys, letting you know what solution I'm using now:
Textra is a great, simple, text app that uses popups with quick reply. It doesn't have sticky, permanent chat heads, HOWEVER. It does have the option at the popup 'Leave it', which leaves a notification in the drawer. Whenever you press the notification, the popup opens again (you can keep doing this).
It's like a chathead that doesn't take up space! Awesome!

Don't forget you can (kind of) change the appearance of the popups! Go to settings, choose theme. I use Holo Light just because it's simple. I agree that it could use some extra customization features. It seems like the devs do a really good job of responding to user feedback though, so maybe that'll be fixed in an upcoming version (fingers crossed )

I've heard awesome things about Textra as well, I might have to give that a go.
I don't know if anyone has used the gs5 but one of the features I loved from it was a quick pop up for sms that you could reply in and send off without closing the app you are in. It was very handy say if you are playing a game or don't want exit g+.
I know there are some apps on the play store called pop up but they are ugly and not very smooth. And when you reply in them it still shows as an unread on your messages. So all around they are far from perfect.
I was wondering if anyone had seen anything like this for xposed or maybe just a root app. Let me know if you see anything like this because I would love to have it on the m8.
Thanks guys

Oddly enough the verizon sms app does that, and you can sync it on multiple devices not just your phone. I have mine synced to my tablet and computer ?

There is a setting in Sense 6 Toolbox under Various Mods - Popup Notification that is similar to the S5 feature. I use it all the time. You can make the back ground blur when you receive the notification and it looks nice.
I know you may want to use the stock messaging app but the handcent app does this and I love it. I rarely go into the actual app. Here's the link if you want to check it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms
Just tried textra and I think it's one of the best sms apps there is. Has nice popup and reply features
Try go sms… has pop up window for new msgs like u said, doesn't leave it as unread msg ,and is extremely customizable and theme-able
If you use gpe or aosp Roms you can use heads up notifications.
I like this app it's called Heads-Up Notifications https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=codes.simen.l50notifications

I am also using the popup like you are but I have one question. I haven't seen anywhere in the toolbox where you can get a quick reply like cm and a few aosp roms have built in. Basically where it doesn't take you to the message app, it sends it via the popup message. Know what I mean?
