Hi there,
Since the new update of Facebook Messenger, the functionality of sending texts (SMS) has been removed. As I don't like holding on to an older version that will get outdated one time, I'm wondering if there is any text app like it.
I have searched dozens of pages on Google, including threads on xda, but none seem to have what I'm looking for. The closest I have come to is GO Sms (which I'm using now) and SMS Ninja (I even tried Paranoid Android with it's Halo functionality) Both SMS apps have the same chathead-like popup of FB Messenger which you can press to open, but once you close the message, the popup is gone.
In Facebook Messenger, the chathead-popup stays on the screen until you drag it to the bottom to delete the overlay from the screen.
Do you happen to know an app that provides me with what I'm looking for?
Thanks in advance for your time!
I'm afraid I don't have an answer but I'm curious why you want it to stay open? I never used the Facebook messenger and am wondering if I missed some functionality.

What I like about Facebook Messenger is that I can open the chathead, read the message, and don't have to reply instant because the popup would close. I can just close the bubble, go on with what I was doing and reopen the bubble whenever I want to reply
Ok, thanks. Not sure if that would suit me or not as I've never tried it. I avoid Facebook on principle although I grudgingly created an account some time ago.
Maybe you could give Portal a try. Personally I'm more interested in the multi-window function it provides.

Ninja SMS popups work almost identically to Facebook's chat heads. You just have to click the collapse arrow instead of the close button.

Oh I didn't know that! Although I find the popup layout of Ninja SMS pretty ugly, I guess I'll have to live with that for now.
I'm gonna give Portal a shot as well once I get home, although I'm not sure if it has the permanent popup functionality that I'm looking for.
Thanks to both of you for your helpful replies! More suggestions always welcome
Hey guys, letting you know what solution I'm using now:
Textra is a great, simple, text app that uses popups with quick reply. It doesn't have sticky, permanent chat heads, HOWEVER. It does have the option at the popup 'Leave it', which leaves a notification in the drawer. Whenever you press the notification, the popup opens again (you can keep doing this).
It's like a chathead that doesn't take up space! Awesome!

Don't forget you can (kind of) change the appearance of the popups! Go to settings, choose theme. I use Holo Light just because it's simple. I agree that it could use some extra customization features. It seems like the devs do a really good job of responding to user feedback though, so maybe that'll be fixed in an upcoming version (fingers crossed )

I've heard awesome things about Textra as well, I might have to give that a go.

on windows mobile phones and within other applications, such as twitter clients, you can swipe side to side to switch between messages. would a mod like this be possible on the mms.apk ?
i can see where people would ask why not just press the back button and choose the message, but for example i am usually texting back and forth with a few people and sliding side to side seems easier, and made functionality sense on winmo.
so... possible?

beautiful widgets used to have an mms apk that was the hero type interface
handcent needs to get on this!
You can get something similar on a rooted Palm Pre. It was patch that made any messaging conversation (gtalk, mms, aim, etc) a whole separate windows so all you had to do was hit the white button to minimize the windows and swipe left or right to the desired conversion and then just tap it to full screen it. Made it easier to have multiple conversation running yet easy to keep them separate.
so this seems like something people would want? maybe i can get in touch with arctu and get in implemented into the community Mms.apk

Yeah this would be pretty cool, something like how google talk does it
Pure Messenger Widget has this, well, something close. I use it as a central widget for all my messaging needs. Love it!
I never thought of this but i would love to see this in the mms.apk if it could be done!

Hello chaps
I've just got an HTC Legend and love pretty well everything about it ...except...
The SMS side of things is awful - you access it via the "Messages" widget, not sure if this is a native Android app or an HTC add-on but it's rubbish. All you get is a list of messages you've sent and received with no indication as to which is which and messages from the same person are bunched together into one on the list - it's just awful and there seems to be no way to change it so just an "inbox" view or whatever.
In addition, when you compose an SMSthe text entry box statys tiny and docks at the bottom so yuo get the recipient at the top and the message at the bottom with a big space in between unless the message is really long.
I'm amazed how bad it all is. Is there a good market replacement for it?
Cheers
K
Check out Handcent. Not only does it make the list more similar to an iPhone-esque style, but adds a bunch of extra features like colored trackball alert if you're rooted, or a Quick Reply function, where you can quickly send a message to anyone using your hardware buttons.
Is this some kind of joke!? April 1st has passed!

Handcent is the best IMHO....
There should be a messaging application you are using... not just the widget.
I would have to agree that Handcent is a pretty decetn app!
is it possible to disable the default sms proggy and let handcent be the only one?

Yeah, It should just be a matter of going into the stock Messaging app. On the main screen that shows all your threads, press menu, go to Options/Settings (whichever one is there, cba to look at my phone at the moment) then just disable notifications. That means it should never bother you again (unless you want it to - in which case just re-enable that)
just wondering? lock screen seems lack of features and would like to enhance
I downloaded app called SMS Popup. Its pretty cool. When you get an incoming SMS it turns the screen on and shows you the txt, you can then close, delete, or reply right from there.

I agree with you! Very customizable.
Do either of those pop up ONLY when locked?
The iPhone's popups are truly a PITA, I love the way Android does it when I'm using it... But I wish there would be some sort of popup preview when locked.

It shows up on the home screen like iphone does, only little better, you can quick reply right from the window.
It reminds me of BiteSMS for jailbroke iphones.

I have heard that, not tried it yet. Gonna roll with SMS Popup for a week or two then try handcent.
So far what I like about SMS Popup is the fact that it gives you the popup with the quick reply, close, delete option, but it doesnt interfere with or override the default built in messaging app (which I kind of like too).
I tested out a Droid last November for 30 days. And after using an iphone for 2 years one of the biggest gripes I had about android was the way you got almost no notification of an incoming sms, except for a tiny little LED. If I had known about handcent or sms popup I may have never taken the Droid back within the 30 day window. I was missing tons of txt messages because of it.
i have a request can someone post a picture of the puzzle pieces when a message comes

I switched from Handcent to SMS Popup for that reason... SMS Popup seems more integrated whereas there's just way too much stuff going on with Handcent

Its the standard lock screen but its made to look like a jigsaw puzzle. You have to slide a yellow puzzle piece over to the right into the blank space where it belongs. And on the yellow puzzle piece, it tells you how many missed messages you have. Like a 2 with an envelope. I think its a little cheesy myself. I'm sure if you google it, there's a picture of it somewhere.

ok ty just saw a video of it in of the reviews looks alrite
any hopes to get a S2U2 style setup for the lock screen? I loved it on WinMo, but love this device so much more than to be stuck with that ancient O/S anymore.....
EDIT - Lock 2.0 Demo and Full are iPhone style.... but with no SMS preview and all that good stuff that S2U2 is known for, so I wait!
Any way to get google voice sms messages to show on the lock screen?

I honestly like this feature. I do a lot of texting and it's nice to be able to unlock and go directly to the sms app.
It would be nice if there were similar puzzle pieces for other notifications though.
I actually like the little puzzle piece. I just wish they had a piece for everything. Like one for missed calls. One for voicemail. Something like that.

they do have different puzzle peices for different things...ill try to take some screenshots...post back soon.

missed phone calls are orange and placed higher
missed sms are green and placed lower
if both missed phone call and sms they will both show on the screen and you can choose your puzzle piece

But not at the same time though, as in if you had a new email AND a new text message, it won't show TWO puzzle pieces at the same time, and you choose which one you want to "unlock" - now THAT would be cool!

I uninstalled them because they both are somewhat buggy (SMS Popup notified me twice, even with the default app's settings shut off, and then if I was already in the texting app, Handcent didn't seem to be able to know that I had looked at it)
I'll just deal with it until Samsung releases a fix.

I don't know if anyone has used the gs5 but one of the features I loved from it was a quick pop up for sms that you could reply in and send off without closing the app you are in. It was very handy say if you are playing a game or don't want exit g+.
I know there are some apps on the play store called pop up but they are ugly and not very smooth. And when you reply in them it still shows as an unread on your messages. So all around they are far from perfect.
I was wondering if anyone had seen anything like this for xposed or maybe just a root app. Let me know if you see anything like this because I would love to have it on the m8.
Thanks guys

Oddly enough the verizon sms app does that, and you can sync it on multiple devices not just your phone. I have mine synced to my tablet and computer ?

There is a setting in Sense 6 Toolbox under Various Mods - Popup Notification that is similar to the S5 feature. I use it all the time. You can make the back ground blur when you receive the notification and it looks nice.
I know you may want to use the stock messaging app but the handcent app does this and I love it. I rarely go into the actual app. Here's the link if you want to check it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms
Just tried textra and I think it's one of the best sms apps there is. Has nice popup and reply features
Try go sms… has pop up window for new msgs like u said, doesn't leave it as unread msg ,and is extremely customizable and theme-able
If you use gpe or aosp Roms you can use heads up notifications.
I like this app it's called Heads-Up Notifications https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=codes.simen.l50notifications

I am also using the popup like you are but I have one question. I haven't seen anywhere in the toolbox where you can get a quick reply like cm and a few aosp roms have built in. Basically where it doesn't take you to the message app, it sends it via the popup message. Know what I mean?

O ok I know what you mean and yeah I don't see a settings for that.
Messages& also has a popup. Love this SMS client as it syncs across all my platforms and devices.
I'm looking for an SMS app that doesn't seem to exist, so I thought I'd post here in case there's a cool project I'm missing or some interesting ideas anyone has to share.
What I'd Like:
An SMS app with the following features:
-Both SMS and MMS work reliably and consistently
-Material Design compliant
-Swipe to return to conversation list
-Quick reply
-Avatar images in the conversations
What I've Tried and Why I'm not a Fan:
-Hangouts: No swipe or quick reply, the workflow/2-tab system in inefficient and ugly
-Textra: Weird font and no avatars in the conversations
-QKSMS: It bugs out on my phone...it thinks I have on-screen buttons (I have capacitive) and it puts a giant bar at the bottom of the screen, but stuff I can't see or interact with goes under that bar.
-Evolve: So much going on, it's so busy and sort of laggy and clunky even on my brand new Droid Turbo.
-Chomp: It keeps yelling at me that it can't find my APN settings even though every other app including Textra made by the same company works fine. Also only partially Materialized. OCD.
_Google Messenger: No quick reply or swipe.
-Go: Too much stuff for my taste
-Verizon Messages: Super ugly.

try YAATA
i think it meets (almost, if not) all the above mentioned :good:
I use YAATA and love it
YAATA would be perfect if it would turn Wi-Fi back on after sending a MMS
Thanks guys, I'll have to check that one out. Just got it installed and I'm playing with all the settings. When I initially opened it the font and pictures were huge and I felt like I was holding a Fisher Price toy but it has a ton of settings it looks like so I'm feeling a lot better now that I've played with a few of them. I figured there was a great app I was missing, so thanks for the help guys!

There's a fix for this in the advanced settings of the app
Someone pointed out the navigation bar fix option to me over in the G+ community for the app, but it didn't work in my case. Nothing changed.
Never heard of qksms before. Absolutely love it. Thanks xda and all members for suggesting approximately 70% of all my installed apps. ?
Indeed...actually QK started working for me again after I rebooted my phone. Not sure why I didn't think of that. I originally found out about that here too, and YAATA is actually really nice also. QK is still prettier, but YAATA seems to have fewer bugs right now.
