Landscape QWERTY slider Moto Mod keyboard - Moto Z Accessories

The Indiegogo campaign page for Moto Mod keyboard has been launched with status "Coming Soon". You can leave your email there if you want to get updates about Early Bird perks etc. The keyboard is going to be 5-row with led backlight. It is also supposed to have extra battery built in. Here is some information:

Sorry to be asking that, but just to clarify:
- Are you planning on starting the campaign with only the mockups to show up or do you already have a prototype, contact with e.g. the keypad suppliers or anything palpable?
- Are you making all this (design, dealing with the campaign and production) alone?
- I understand you have won some kind of challenge, does that mean Lenovo will, in any way, help with the device production?

The prototype is under engineering. I have already broke 2 dev boards. We are getting there.
No I am partnering with a professional design and manufacturering company. They have partnership with Foxconn for all there devices, including this one. Will have professional quality control.
All your questions will hopefully be answered when the formal campaign launches

This is amazing! Thank you for sharing!
If this actually happens, I might be finally able to replace my aging Droid 4.

It will happen. Already making prototypes now. The IGG campaign will start in a few days. Please show your support once launched.

What's the price point going to be?

Previously it was mentioned that the price would be similar with TOHKBD (Jolla). However there is a lot of work to do so we don't know anything for sure. It looks like that the built in battery might be dropped out after all (link).
chenliangchen said:
Had a tough decision today that the extra battery will be removed.
To ensure keyboard comfortness, there is only two ways adding a secondary battery:
- Adding an extra layer as a battery, which will add 4mm thickness to overall. (And will make overall thickness reaches 20mm
- Adding small batteries on the area between edge of keyboard to the edge of device, which means very small capacity and reduce keyboard area, not worth.
After overall consideration "for now" battery will be removed.
Update: I would rather not mention any battery at this stage until real feel after prototyping!

20 mm will be very unattractive. However, I would prefer to take a hit on battery life in favor of a backlight facility.

Great Moto Mod! I already reserved two keyboards: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/physical-keyboard-mod-for-moto-z

Just a minor nitpick, but looking at your renderings on the campaign page... the one with the mod off the phone and closed makes it look like the keyboard slides to the right (based on what keys can be seen through the "camera hole"). But the other pics show it opening to the left.
Like I said, minor, but might want to fix that.

I have backed this campaign, cant wait to see the prototype

Thank you! Trying best to deliver it asap!

Here to say I'm thrilled to have stumbled upon this. I was one of the last, holding out with my Droid4 well past the 11th hour before begrudgingly giving up my hard keyboard. I've even been considering the Priv, despite questionable reviews. Delighted this has come along, and will likely be tossing my dollars in as well.
Took a look at the site updates. Others might be interested to hear:
-looks like there will be extra battery power included
-they are working toward the thinnest possible design (forgoing the easy way in their efforts)
-headphone jack and Qi charging are not currently on the books, but looks like maybe (?) they might be talked into it. Personally I'd love to see a the jack added, so please make your voice heard if these things are important to you.
Thanks again... Hope this flies!

I would more interested if this could possibly work with LinageOS or if the next moto Z will be able to use the same mods

All new Moto Z phones will be backwards compatible with the Moto Mods for 3 years. As for Lineage, the Moto Mods themselves use greybus to communicate with the OS which is FOSS. It can be ported over.

The first prototype is shared on the page. looks really good

It is funded now.

Let's hope they can keep the promised time schedule

Anyone heard any news on this lately? Be pretty cool if they could build a battery into the keyboard for you regular z users.

I would prefer high quality mechanism and thinnes over battery. That's why there is a battery mod .

Well, the last quote for the battery was around 1500mAh. I would be a very happy Z user if this comes true. The only thing I feel lacking on the Z. Unfortunately Motorola did not sell the Battery Mod in India :crying:

Xiaomi Phone UPDATED: Hands On

http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/xiaomi-m1-with-miui-os-a-310-phone-with-1-5ghz-dual-core-soc-a/
Could be a great phone for Android flashers and enthusiasts, depending on the build quality. Best Part:
"but if you insist on trying other Android flavors on Xiaomi's hardware, then you'll be pleased to know that this phone lets you flash whatever firmware you like."
Update:

Looks very interesting and the price tag sounds good.
Waiting eagerly.
Does anyone know how to order it?
Ive been trying google to search how to order the phone (xiaomi m1 or miphone etc) cant find it. If you know how please post in this forum or pm me.
Cool, normal for beginners
This has potential. Looks really cool!
Very nice hardware, and a 1930mAh battery, thats impressive.
Looks too much like an Iphone though, which is sad, I wish more Android makers would try to create their own identity.
very cool phone I like it

lol the definatly will mate haha
To those who said it's a copy of the iPhone, let me tell you this, I watched the announcement video, I actually agree with their design philosophy. They said something like this: "No design will ever please everyone, so their decision is to have no design. So the goal becomes very simple, as long as the look is not irritating, it is a good design."
To me, the design looks more like a Nexus S's front + an HTC phone's back. It looks simple, but still pretty none the less.
Those who wonder how to purchase this phone, this is currently planned to be sold online from their official website only. I'm sure some will find ways to import it to other countries though.
What I like the most of this phone is the effort they put into making it the perfect phone. Large battery, antenna design, heat dissipation, screen readability under direct sun light, weekly ROM updates, totally unlocked, quality (survives being run over by a car http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjk2MjE4NTUy.html), etc. I actually think this phone is more exciting than the next Nexus phone, this is what the Nexus S should have been.

If it will available in India than what will be approximate price of this DRAGON???
LG OPTIMUS P500, mik's OS 2.3.4
Although there are similarities between the iPhone and this device, I still don't think it'2 "copied".
I really like the look and I am really, really looking forward to this phone, it's specs are phenomenal and for that price you will not find a better smartphone for sure!
This may be the one to replayce my beloved Desire! ;-)

[Q] Acer Liquid Glow E330

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has the Acer Liquid Glow E330? I can't really find much info on here threadwise and there doesn't seem to be a specific section for it (maybe mods could add one).
I bought mine about a month ago and its not bad, but it could be better. Anyone else have any opinion on this phone?

I looking at getting one myself - it looks to be a well specified ICS phone at a reasonable price
I'm worried though that there is very little mention of it online. Most "reviews" date back to February when it was annonced and don't really tell you much. I'm also worried that when I go looking for cases to protect it, I can't find anything (other than generic slip cases, etc).
I'd be very interested in what you have to say about it in the areas of general usability, quality of construction, calls, battery life, stability - all the stuff you only get from people who actually own and use the phone! Oh, and if you found a case supplier, I'd be keen to hear about that too!

Oh hey, i got a liquid glow and from using for 3 weeks it is a really good phone.
For protection cases theres nothing except those pull tab things you find on ebay. ( i ordered one)
the only problem i have with it is the wifi, but that may be because of my router and well its not a well known phone.
As you said the reviews date back to when it was announced and acer already announced a new line of phones so I am not sure if this phone is ever gonna be known to a big public out there....
But in a nutshell: Good phone 4 low price... but keep in mind that it is still a low end phone so sometimes it gets laggy because you're running too many apps, just close them.
bye
and probably acer stop support & upgrade it very quickly

Thanks for the replies.
It's a bit curious that there is so little online about these phones. They appear to offer a decent spec for a reasonable price. For me, its ICS, screen resolution, SDHC expansion and replacable battery are the key selling points - I don't think there is any competition at that price. The Expansys website has the phone no. 6 in its popularity stakes (Whatever that means: http://www.expansys.com/acer-liquid-glow-cats-eye-black-234412/); I suppose it suggests they are at least selling some.
Not seeing any cases for it on EBay tends to scare me though - and confirm the thoughts of the poster above that it will have little support :crying: Will we see Jellybean for example? Acer appear to be promoting the Android-rivalling Aliyun operating system in other markets and this doesn't fill me with confidence regarding their commitment into the future.
So, it looks like anyone buying the phone should do so in the knowledge that they will be unsupported in terms of accessories and future updates. Still a tempting spec as-is though

Superbook, by Sentio (formerly Andromium)

Did anyone else kickstart this laptop shell? https://www.sentio.com/
I sorely missed my Atrix and its lapdock, so this naturally caught my eye. Best thing is that it's not make/ model specific!
Looks good. Basically a battery and keyboard with trackpad, really. Although I'd even more, like to have a slider case. I would pay hundreds for a good slider qerty case for Note 4. In fact I was thinking, i HATE onscreen soft keyboard and would miss my back ahd home button on a Note 8 if it's like the S8. But, a case like this would fix it! And screen would be big! Although the Flip Cover is also sweet. I still don't get why many are obsessed with getting rid of tactile buttons. Just for me, personally... Haptic is no replacement, Swype is actually kinda disappointing and I find its prediction crap. I miss my Droid 2 keyboard.
That said, if this is good quality I might buy. I never heard of Sentio but I will try it tomorrow with my phone and an office keyboard.
I was always fascinated with Padfone too as can be imagined. This seems like a better option since it can work with any phone.

I did see that. I've messed around with Remix OS in a VM a few times. It's an interesting concept.
I want to buy it I Germany because I replaced my laptop with the mobile.
But the docking station without yet another data storage is very nice. No worries about compatibility, moving downloaded files from a to b, no chatting on different platforms and android simply is a neat platform. And it is always with me.
Just happened to Google when I saw this lapdock as I'm selling my atrix one. Found this thread. Thought I would link you guys to this...

Slide out keyboard moto mod. Have the Z Play and am looking forward to giving this a spin. I used to do so much more actual work on my phone when I had my Epic. Was all set to Preordered the Z2 Force to and relegate my Z Play to backup, but they shrunk the **** out of the battery from 3500 to 2730 mAh because they had to make a 7mm thin phone even hinder for some God awful reason. Why a day is some benchmark for battery life is beyond me. Give me two days, then you can make a phone needlessly thinner so you have bragging rights. Funny how some companies even made their new flagship slightly thicker this time around. But not Moto.

Moto Mod Keyboard on IndieGoGo

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/keyboard-mod-a-physical-keyboard-for-the-moto-z/
safe to assume that this will work with the z2 play?
...due to 3 generation compatibility thing for moto mods, I would imagine that this will be compatible with all z series, yeah?
found some other indev moto mods on indiegogo:
biometric reader mod: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/moto-secure-a-moto-mod-concept-security/x/17667308#/
and air quality sensor mod: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/inhale-make-air-visible-personal-healthy/x/17667308#/
-- really hoping the mod concept takes off and at least is permitted to live in it's own little corner of the smartphone market... i doubt we'll see widespread adoption, but these are some interesting concepts.
This looks absolutely fantastic. I REALLY miss the Droid style phones. Have a note 3, and I'm weighing my options between this phone, or the OnePlus 5T.
Moto Z2 Play has been really eye-catching, I'm leaning towards getting it, and this keyboard addon would be awesome.
I now have one on order!
They're apparently nearing delivery and will stop taking preorders through indiegogo soonish... They're also discussing delivering a model a bit early without a built in battery, since they're nearing mass production.
Here in Canada, it's been tough getting ahold of mods. The gamepad isn't available at all... Every retailer has the 1st Gen speaker, projector and zoom... I know it's risky and a bit pricey, but I just want to support the mod platform, but Moto and it's partners aren't making it easy.
It wasn't easy to pull the trigger on a device that specs/benchmarks lower than flagship devices from 2 years ago, but the mods are really intriguing...
Every other device is basically in an arms race... Z series is trying to carve out it's own niche... So far, I'm really happy with it, having come from an LG G3.
is there a way to buy this mod? now they close the preorder?

you'll have to inquire with the development team, but i imagine you'll end up having to wait for some kind of retail release at this point... i know they don't always make it that far, but if they won't accept an additional contribution, that's what you'll have to hope for - or perhaps, someone who backed wanting to sell theirs.
Honestly this mod was the one thing i was hoping for more than anything else, and albiet the second gen mods are nice they're generally not worth the upgrade, but this keyboard mod will be the cou de gras for buying the moto z2

Essential 2 possibility?

I'm starting to look for a new phone and the Essential has piqued my interest, but, it seems like there have been quite a few start up problems associated with new products.
So, since the World Mobile Congress is happening at the end of the month and Essential has a spot reserved in it, I was wondering if there has been any leaks, rumors or news associated with it? I was hoping for news of an Essential 2 or a ph-2? New release? Anything?
Thx.
Probably just new colors and accessories. They have their hands full dealing with the PH-1.
Sent from my Essential PH-1 using Tapatalk
Maybe they will showcase new PH-1 accessories that they have no intention of ever making. LOL
Just maybe, Essential is winding down their beta project (PH-1) and is focused on their first truly production phone.

Maybe... Although with this phone flopping the way it did, I don't know how much I would invest in the next phone if I were them or their investors... The PH-1 was a failure. They lost money on every unit they sold. If Andy had not raised so much capital to keep them afloat, they would have closed their doors by now.
The vision was ambitious and great. The execution, not so much.
There are a lot of B.S. articles out there no doubt, and there were some growing pains... But I wouldn't give up my PH-1 for any other phone right now. I love it... no case since launch, and still looks great, camera is pretty good now. battery life spectacular, Looking forward to whatever they have to offer next

I like most things about it. I am just annoyed at bugs, and the progression of updates isn't as good as I would have hoped. Yes, they put out 16 camera updates over 5 months, but that isn't exactly a ringing endorsement... that they HAD to put out so many updates just to get the camera up to "mediocre" status... LOL
Like anything, if it works for you and makes you happy, enjoy it! I am just on the fence with it...

Failure?
You need to define failure.
I have a friend on Sprint that has hated just about every phone she had Android and iPhone.
She absolutely loves the PH-1.
I have a PH-1 and it is by far the best phone I've owned.
Here is my list that I've owned:
SCH-i600W (Windows flip phone)
SCH-i760
Treo 700W
BB Storm 1
BB Storm 2
DroidX
Droid Bionic
Droid Razr
Droid Razr Maxx
Galaxy S4
LG G3
iPhone 6 plus
Nexus 6P
LG G6
Essential PH-1
There are some true failures in that list.
If you want to base success on how many sold you might be right.
What they learned though was how difficult it is to launch a device.
They leaned to roll out updates.
They learned how they need to support customers.
They learned how to partner, although they picked a crappy one (Sprint).
But overall as a new player in the high end market, I wouldn't call them a failure.
Failure defined by sales numbers and how much money they lost on this phone.
SquireSCA said:
Yeah, few failures on that list. I have had a few that were not on the list as well, I am betting that we all have.
One thing that I will say, and this is based on several tech articles that I have read in the past couple weeks, is that the market is changing a bit. It's not the wide open market that it was in a lot of ways, even just a few years ago. One article pointed out that a company like OnePlus, got really lucky. They hit at the right time, but for someone else to do it again in 2017/18 faces more challenges.
Oh well, time will tell I guess.
I love new products and the more there are, the more competition there is. I don't want a world made up of just Apple and Samsung. But we are gonna have to sift through a few lemons to find that occasional diamond in the rough...

Considering that Google only sold ~4 Million of Pixel and Pixel 2 phones of all types last year, calling the Essential a complete failure might be a bit premature.
The sales numbers might be low, but I think that this is just indicative of how difficult it is to compete with Apple and Samsung and nothing else.
I like innovative an new products.
No matter what they say about Essential, they were first to the party with a phone that had a huge screen and minimal bezels.
They have a build quality and hand feel second to none.
I don't plan on replacing this phone for a while.
I only with I could get a Poetic Affinity case. That is my favorite case and I've had one on my last three phones.
To be fair, 80k is a lot less than 4 mill. Lol

88K.
But think about the size of the companies and length of time in the market.
Google had all year and only sold 4 Million. That's 333K per month. That's a rally low number.
Essential started shipping in the second half of the year and was an unknown company.
So if you put it into perspective. We don't know if the company is a failure or not, is all I'm saying.
The time on the market is not statistically significant enough to draw any conclusion.
I just know I like my PH-1.
88k shipped, not sold. Plus, how many returns?

I hope the company survives. Overall I am pretty happy with my PH-1. I much prefer it to any Scamsung product. And everywhere you go, Samsung and Apple are the only choices. That needs to end. Can't find an HTC anywhere to put my hands on despite it being critically acclaimed as one of the best devices of 2017. Pathetic. I asked about the PH-1 at Best Buy and the employee said they might have 1 in the back but there just wasn't enough display space. They had about 30 Samsung and iPhones on display though.....
