Mobile processor for running Android Studio - General Questions and Answers

Currently, I am looking for a Windows laptop for Android app development. Which means I will be running the latest Android Studio.
Just a little background. Previously, I owned a laptop with Intel Core i5-5200u, 8 GB RAM and a 5400 RPM HDD. The processor was never fully utilized due to the I/O bottleneck by the HDD. I observed that my CPU was at most 20% utilization, while the HDD I/O was maxed out at 100%. And Android Studio took 3 minutes to do a cold start. However, a few weeks ago, the laptop died. As budget is tight, I am thinking of getting a cheaper replacement laptop this time round with a Celeron/Pentium processor.
I have checked around my area and found mainly laptops using the below 3 processors on sale:
Intel Core i5-7200u
Intel Pentium N3700 (Quad core)
Intel Celeron N3060 (Dual core)
I am wondering if I can get away with the dual core Celeron N3060 and 4 GB RAM.
Or is it advisable to at least get a quad core Pentium N3700 instead? Would there be any noticeable difference in performance for the IDE, emulator or build/debug process?
Or a Core i5 is the absolute minimum to run Android Studio and I cannot scrimp or save on a development laptop?
Would love to hear from Android app developers. Thanks.

Ideal CPU for Apache Cordova/PhoneGap/Android Studio
Do I need a Core i5 to have a smooth experience for Cordova/PhoneGap mobile app development, and occasionally, for running Google Android Studio?
For Cordova/PhoneGap, I can probably get by with Brackets or some lighter code editor/IDE.
I don't have much money, so is a $200-$400 entry level Celeron/Pentium notebook sufficient?

ARM Quad-Core up to 2.5 Ghz

Has anybody besides me already read those news?
http://phandroid.com/2010/09/09/arm-quad-core-2-5-ghz-cortex-a-15-is-definitely-happening/
Pretty exciting! Even though we'll have to wait.. but I guess in about 10 to 20 years.. we'll laugh about 1Ghz CPUs in our mobiles! Maybe even about 4Ghz+
I see you haven't learned about the CPU war over the past decade, have you? Pushing Mhz was really the only way chip developers felt like they could increase speed until AMD chose a different approach i.e. made chips more efficient per clock rather than just pushing Mhz like Intel carried on doing. Both both companies realised that they could re-develop their chips to be more efficient then the whole 'multi-core' race started.
While 2.5Ghz sounds impressive, 4 cores @ 1 Ghz doesn't sound that bad either and I see that being more practical in 10 years time, not 4Ghz+.
20 years ago Intel released the 80486DX processor, look at how far processing power has come since then.
Heck I still look back and laugh at my XT with it's 8088 CPU running at a stonking 4.77MHz! 0.33MIPS
So given how much CPUs in general have developed in the last 10-20 years, and they're talking about releasing a quad core 2.5GHz CPU in 2012, I don't think it's too much to think that in 2030 as processors will be so much more powerful that looking back to the CPUs of 2015 we'll view them as slow and pathetic.
Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition i980EE 147,600 MIPS at 3.3 GHz, compare that with 30 years ago the 8088 giving only 0.33MIPS at 4.77MHz!

veiwsonic tablets

ok viewsonic has 2 of these tablets that look exactly the same and same price, One runs android 2.2, the other one dual boots windows 7 home premium and android 1.6. this one also has a dual core intel atom 1.6 ghz processor, 1 gb ram and 16 gb storage.

Possible to flash the windows 7 one with newer version of android like 2.2 or higher? Already has 1.6 on it
First, Kmart's listing my be incorrect. I think it could just be a g-tablet mistakenly labled as the Viewsonic's dual boot device. Much like Sears had on their sight originally.
Second, I believe its a single core Intel Atom processor.
Thirdly, Officially Intel X86 processors don't support anything over Android 1.6. There is project by a group of developers that are working on getting 2.2 to run on X86 processors. I don't know much about the effort so you will have to do a search.
Lastly, realize that a tablet running on an intel processor will get much less battey life that one running on ARM processors.
That's about all I can tell you. Hope it helped some.
That ad is incorrect. The listing and price is for a G-Tablet, but the product description below is for the Viewpad 10, which sells for well over $500 and does run W7 and Android 1.6.
The G-Tablet is ARM, Viewpad is Atom (x86).
I don't think there is an easily usable x86-friendly ROM with 2.2 yet. Read all about it here:http://www.android-x86.org/
They are not the same; you should specially take a look at the processor.
Gtablet has a tegra 250 that give a great power with a low energy consumption(Nut it wont run windows until the drivers are written)
The other one has an atom processor. Good speed and power but has a bigger energy consumption(around 3 or 4 hours with a single charge if lucky) and is able to run windows.
I would highly recommend Tegra 250 tablet just because it gives a much better tablet experience and the opportunity to upgrade to honeycomb.
A friend of mine locally came across the same ad for K Mart. went down to the store saw the device, asked questions, then went to purchase. when they wanted to charge him 599.00 he (with a smile) pulled a copy of the ad from his pocket and exclaimed "that's not what the ad says". They honored the price for him and he is less than pleased. I was able to test drive it for 30 min, and did not like it one bit.
The dual boot slows it down way too much, touch interface is less than responsive.
We tried 2 times to get it to flash and was unsuccessful in doing so. He is considering taking it back for a refund and buying the 2.2 droid version from Office Depot.
So if you MUST have W7 on ur Tab for whatever reason...this is not the device you want. My suggestion would be to wait for the ASUS tabs running W7 when they are released. STAY away from the VS dual boot G Tab.
Just my 2 cents.
The upcoming Viewpad 10Pro will dual boot between Windows and Android 2.2 and you don't have to reboot to switch from one to the other.

I'm not a fan of the Atom processor. My netbook has one and its GPU is very weak. It struggles with flash files. That is why I went with the gTablet with the Tegra2 its a very strong processor. Now with all that said no I can't load windows 7 and will most likely never be able to because of the processor instructions (ARM) are not compatible with windows 7 maybe windows 8 down the road. With that said I am not willing to sacrifice performance just to load a weak windows 7. I understand of course that you might have needs for windows we all do but I will find work arounds.

I don't believe it is a true dual boot as they even say that Android 2.2 is running via a virtualization.

[Q] looking for an android TV device

im looking for a new android TV device to replace my wii i use now for streaming media (netflix, hulu, etc).. i want something that can run any android app, easily install third party applications, has enough performance to emulate N64 and PS1 games with the ability to stream PC and high level emulators from my gaming PC.. my router has gigabit LAN and N750 dual band
so my budget is about $75, within this budget i have been able to find the google nexus player using a quad core 64 bit 1.8ghz atom, 1 gig ram, and powervr 6 gpu, no ethernet, and 802.11AC wifi.. ive had issues with some android apps not working all that well on x86 architecture so im not sure if the atom will cause issues with some third party apps, and id like a device thats rooted/unlocked without breaking the warranty (ive had bad luck with low quality ASUS products, multiple ASUS devices failing)
another device i found is various "M8" devices which all seem to have the same specs, a cortex A9 quad core 2ghz processor, 8-core mali 450 GPU, 2 gigs of RAM, though seemingly only ABGN wifi and 10/100 ethernet.. so the downsides on this is the graphics arent as good, network isnt as good, but it does have more RAM and these devices seem to already support third party apps and being rooted
which of these options would be best for what i need it to do?.. and are there any other options i should consider?
You can try to find some solutions on Amazon or eBay, there are always so many good products on it. Besides, I know one brand named Loctek, you can search for that and maybe helpful.

well, if i want some emulator capabilities and game streaming, im probably going to want something capable of opengl ES 3, mali 450 no matter how many cores is only ES 2.0
browsing around on amazon a bit to see what i could find.. i found a few devices, all with 1.8ghz cortex A17 processors, 2 gigs of RAM, and mali T768 GPUs.. and they seem to also have gigabit LAN (since my box will be less than 3 feet from, or maybe even underneath my router, this is more important than fast wifi
so... nexus player with a 1.8ghz quad core 64 bit atom processor, 1 gig of RAM, powerVR 6 GPU, no ethernet
or... off-brand player with 1.7ghz quad core 32 bit cortex A17 CPU, 2 gigs of RAM, and mali T764 GPU and gigabit ethernet

anyone have an opinion on these options?
i guess no one has any experience with these products?
Im in the same boat.. But in Canada.
Check fasttech.com also
See the pcduino or raspberry pi 2 also..
Im holding out for a minix x8h

Help! Whats the difference in performance for these chips?

Hi Tech Gurus,
I'm not the most well verse with tech. Looking for some guidance.
I'm in the market for an external android box for my car. There are 2 options I'm choosing from with the following hardware:
1. Grom VL2: Rockchip 3288 - Quad Core Arm Cortex A17 1.8GHz / Mali-T760 MP4 GPU
2. Lsailt: Allwinner T7 - Hexa Core Arm Cortex A7 1.2GHz / Mali-400 MP4 GPU
Which of these have better performance? 4 big cores vs 6 small cores for a head unit powered by car?
Thanks,
Tech Noob
If you're looking at the processor alone the RK3288 is 50% faster for 33% less cores and it has many improvements over the T7 design. But the speed of the system is very much affected by the amount of memory (RAM). No matter which HU you go with get one that has at least 2GB of RAM.

Both has 3gb of RAM. Thanks for the input. The T7 I believe was released in 2018 while the RK3288 was released in 2014. I thought newer might be better but thanks for confirming that the RK3288 should perform better.
