Should I accept OTA with unlocked bootloader + root - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
So I'm running a stock ROM with root and unlocked bootloader. Just got a notification for an OTA. Should I accept it or will it cause issues?
Thanks

It's going to fail because of root. Sideload the ota with TWRP. Or flash the stock image but remove the -w from the flashall bat file to save dara and apps. Then reroot.

Ah OK thanks, will do. Any way to check what version the downloaded OTA is, so that I can get the corresponding ZIP from the official site?

[?] Flash 23.1.A.1.28 OTA on rooted Z3 ? [SOLVED]

Hi all,
I have a rooted Z3 with dual recovery and locked bootloader running firmware 23.1.A.0.690.
Since the OTA to firmware 23.1.A.1.28 is minor, I was wondering if it is possible to flash an update zip file while keeping root and modified recovery.
any idea ?
thanks

Modified bootloader? Do you mean unlocked? If so then you cannot do OTA, is says so explicitly on the Sony site about unlocked bootloaders. But you can make a backup in recovery, flash a stock FTF of that version (System only) then just flash back your custom kernel (Before booting the phone) and restore data from a backup
If you mean locked bootloader then you can OTA, if its a small update then the chances are it wont format system so you will keep root, but if its a large file the chances are it will format system then re-install it so you will lose root.
Just flash a pre-rooted version of the updated ROM in recovery
Sorry, i meant keeping root and modified recovery (not bootloader).
My bootloader is locked indeed and i am on stock kernel.
So, to your point, i should be safe upgrading minor OTAs?
If so can I anticipate sony's rollout of the OTA and flash the update zip? And where can it be found?
Thx

Maybe.... it all depends on whether or not the OTA formats system and reinstalls it. If it a minor update they may not do that so root and recovery (Which is in system for locked bootloaders) are not deleted.
Its a gamble...
to be 100% safe, you will need to get a prerooted flashable zip and flash it
Hmmm... Ok, but upgrading with a prerooted zip involves flashing a full rom not just the update right?
I am ok with that but would rather save the hassle.
Thanks for the advise
Hi,
Happy to report back that OTA process went smooth.
I am now running 23.1.A.1.28 and still have full root & dual recovery!

Benjieb,
Sorry friend but it was not clear to me... you updated via OTA and keep the root?
Yes that's right. I fixed the typo in my last post.

How do you do it? I mean, you were stock .690 berofe ota?you delete anything of stocks apps??because i test to do the ota update but at the end of processus it's says "verrification impossible" and i saw somewhere that's if we touch or delete stock apps we can't ota ....ans if possible, nobody van do a flashable ZIP with just ota update????
I was stock indeed, and you are right playing with system apps probably prevent OTAs.
That's why I deactivate system apps rather then delete them.
I guess you will have to do a full rom flash.
I'm on stock ROM rooted. Updated to. 28 via OTA just only. Root access still available!!

OTA help, please..

I'm running a Canadian Pixel on 7.1, I just unrooted so I could do the OTA to 7.1.1.
The update will download but fails while installing.
I'd like to flash the update myself but I'm unsure how. I'm running Ubuntu. Any help?
Thanks!

Hi.. is the update like 200+ mb? if so mine does the SAME thing. Mine is (NDE63X) and you WONT find a OTA or a image for 7.1.1. NO clue
Have either of you tried the OTA images from Google's developer site?
Doesn't bootloader have to be locked to take the OTA? Don't do this if your on Verizon veriant.

NO it doesn't have to be locked. I don't think there is a Verizon variant in Canada either which is what the OP says they have.
I mentioned the Verizon veriant because people other than the OP will read what I posted.

Download fastboot from Google and unzip it.
https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.html
Download the latest full factory images from here and unzip it into your fastboot folder. Edit the flashall bat file and remove the -w so you save your apps and data. Run flashall.Bat You will be stock not rooted and no TWRP when you are done. Put back those items if you want.
https://developers.google.com/android/images
You cannot take OTAs directly once you root, even if you completely unroot. You'll need to sideload (or use the edited factory image as in the post above mine). It's not very difficult, there's a nice guide over here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel/how-to/twrp-root-nmf26u-sideload-guide-t3531616
You'll need to re-root/reinstall TWRP if you want to use that functionality again.

Question: If I update to the newest firmware, will I lose root?

Just got a alert to update firmware. Will I lose Root if I Update?
Thanks...
you can't install it if you are rooted, you have to unroot and install stock recovery no twrp for it to work.
it might also lock your bootloader meaning factory reset again to unlock.

Not necessarily. I have an FRD-L04, I was running unlocked bootloader with TWRP and Magisk, rooted on B385. Flashed just the stock b360 recovery through fastboot, and then downloaded the full update package in the updater.
When it booted back up after the update, my bootloader had been locked. I uninstalled Magisk once I got back into Android. All seems to be working so far (except for my finicky SD card reader).
Install stock recovery and proceed with update.
You wont lose root
I lost root and got a locked bootloader since the new update (B394)

Oops then it will restore the recovery, lock the bootloader, remove root

Yes, but that was the only way to get the update to install.
Not that I loos so much when I unlock it again, it's only apps they i have to install again.
Has anybody tried to flash magisk in the new B394? I get an "Process error" when trying to install/download modules
Update: just be sure to create a folder in internal storage named MagiskManager

Unable to update Honor View 10

Guys, i am unable to update to latest .161. I have unlocked bootloader, twrp and installed magisk.
Update manager download the update but it fails to update in twrp recovery.
Please suggest. I don't want to lose data.
Can someone provide zip update package so that i can update in twrp??
You have to remove majisk
Relock boot
Then you will receive official update
Then unlock and reinstall majisk

There is no need to relock.
I didnt whe 110 came out and it still updated... rooted with Magisk as well
@any_thing
Check the ROMs/Kernels/Recoveries section, there's a modified stock recovery that allows for updating w/o relocking the Bootloader.*
Once complete, put TWRP back & root, you will not lose any data/apps/etc...... as you would by simply relocking your Bootloader....
* YMMV,this modified recovery may not be compatible w/your model.

I have the BKL-L04 model & got an update notice earlier today:
While on stock rooted with TWRP & Magisk, the update downloaded & attempted to install, but,it failed.
So,just flash the stock recovery for your model & take the update w/o relocking your bootloader.
You will not lose any data from switching recoveries,at least on this phone.
(If you want to unroot 1st,that's fine, but, not necessary, flashing the modified stock recovery image unroots your phone anyway.)
After taking the update, flash the TWRP & Magisk (& Magisk Manager App,if it disappeared) as you did previously.
Just posting what worked for me,& in no way are my experiences/usage intended to contradict posts/suggestions from others, especially if they have the exact same model of phone as yours.
Hope this helps. :good:

No not at all... Ramdisk is a different partation
I had rooted phone with magisk installed, I received 2 updates like that - automatically lost root privileges, but I didn't receive .161 update (EIS update still not available for me?) any way to get this update?
PS my bootloader is unlocked... do I need lock it to get an update? and how to lock it?

Update on unlocked U12+

I unlocked my U12 at the first day. Unfortunately I flashed a wrong boot.img to root it (TWRP was not out there).
Now I want to update it. My question: Can I OTA when I relock the bootloader, even with wrong boot.img? (It starts normally and I can use it).
Or is it not possible after root, so I have to use update.zip SD Card? And can I flash update.zip directly or should I relock the bootloader before?
And will relocking or update.zip delete my data?
Thanks
Do not re-lock your bootloader! Your device will be soft-bricked.
Just download a RUU (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wIRrVQawd5rD-t9VKPQ-SdRK20RcJVZhwD7lhmPIK8w/edit#gid=0) and flash it:
fastboot oem rebotRUU
fastboot flash zip RUU.zip

Maybe you need a few tries before its working.

Ahh thx, I´ve alredy downloaded it but didn´t know the command
Will be anything deleted?
And whats after that? Can I lock the bootloader after flashing it? Or will OTA work again? Because I´m not shure if the OTA fails because of the unlocked bootloader or the boot.img.
After flashing the RUU, boot into bootloader an look the software status. It it says "Modified" you shouldn't lock the bootloader.
You can apply the OTAs afterwards by entering the stock recovery and choose "Apply update from ADB".
Than download the both OTA-Zips and flash (https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=297589).

I tried it some hours ago and it worked! Software Status is still modified, but I was able to install the next OTA normally in System Settings. I will try the next OTAs tomorrow, maybe I´am on Pie soon.
Thanks for your help.
A last question: Can I reroot it again (with TWRP this time), remove it when another OTA is out, install it and root again? It should work.
