I am looking to replace the upper icons in WM 6.0 with custom ones, the question is are they in the rom (if so cannot edit, right?) or are they in wm somewhere?
I've been slowly going through the system and have not found them yet, any suggestions on where to start?
I have some fantabulous advice on where to start my American amigo.
FIrst, the files SHOULD be editable, they are simply image files under the \Windows directory. I'm pretty sure they all have different names and are not grouped together, but they should be easy to spot (I imagine they will end in a picture format extension IE .bmp .gif etc.
BUT, it is important to note that, like most Windows Operating Systems, the OS doesn't trust you. Therefore, the files are hidden!
If you just have the normal Explorer, I don't know if it has an "unhide system files" choice.
I personally would go download and install Total Commander, Resco Explorer etc, one of which does have that choice.
After that, search that folder and you will find them.
PS I am not rambling, I have actually seen them in there

I had a feeling they had to be in the \windows\ or \windows\system folder.
Now the auduous task of finding, editing and replacing them, I always hated this part, since my patients is minimal at best.

NOTE: 90% of these are the logos for the top bar. One or two relate to the input logo at the bottom bar (IE Keyboard and Pen, I believe it is the Input_Kboard and Pen files). One or two others relate to the image you see when you click the sound icon in the top bar and it gives you two sound parameters to adjust, each with a logo at the top. Use your judgement and eyes to decide which is which. Most you will have seen already.
I don't know if this list is complete, I may have missed some. If you find any others in your searches, let us know and I will add them to this list. I needed to make this list anyway as I am trying to cook a ROM for Himalaya and need to know what I can remove. (For example, Himalaya's don't have EDGE or 3G, so straight away there are eight or so logos that can be removed).
Also note that other programs have access to the top bar and may add their own icons, as Messenger (which does not come installed in our roms) did. Perhaps it is only Microsoft programs that can add their own icons, who knows.

PPS Some of the logos I have never seen appear, but I have been in situations where they should appear (IE No SIM card, but the NoSim image never appeared). I find it interesting that while half follow a naming convention, others don't (IE 1xRTT_connect_PPC.bmp and gprs_connect.bmp without the _PPC). I wonder if this has anything to do with it not working.

Were you ever able to change the battery icons? I was trying the same bmps but they do not change even with a soft reset for me, even tho the file is changed in the directory to my customed one it still remains as the default. Any tips tricks or ideas? My thought is a dll but I'm relatively new to this and am very unsure. Thanks for the tips and hope to hear you have done it or at least figured out a possible way.

There are include as ressource in DLL and we can replace it
The only icon I can find is the Signal Strength Icon

Loving my Fuze so far! Used the process to hard reset and remove the bloatware....not quite ready to take the plunge with a cooked ROM just yet...
On the home screen above the clock there is a bar that just lists the AT&T logo in the upper right. Nothing else. And because of it I have to scroll on my home screen to see everything.
How the heck do I get rid of this useless waste of real estate?
Interesting, I didn't even notice this but true, what a waste of space! I'm hoping for something like HCC, Home Screen Customizer coming back for Fuze, that was one great app!
You arent kidding! I'm a little bummed, my Tilt had more usable home screen space
hope some1 can find a way.
Two ways to do it:
1) go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2796868&posted=1#post2796868 and aply the original TF3D theme. It will also change your orange to green in the theme though
2) use the diamond TF3D configuration tool and go you tabs and remove 'unknown'
choice 1 -Don't care for change of color
choice 2 - Diamond config tool did not remove the AT&T logo -
Any other suggestions or ideas?
sorry- i didn't read the top post well enough. What I did is get rid of the AT&T tab which I hate. If you look at the other screens of TF3D there is always something on top- the first one should probably list Home but I guess it's true- we could all live without them all entirely...

That file already exists in the windows directory. Thus, no change. Still looking at the "AT&T" gray bar across the top of the screen.

I removed the bar using the customizer but I think that qt&t is reading it from the operator name which may never be able to get read of unless someone really customizer tf3d.
FYI - That's not AT&T's doing. Look at all the unlocked TF3D screenshots. It's the line that lists what screen you are looking at or the carrier if it's the home screen. It's in all the cooked ROMs as well since it's part of the basic functionality.

First close TF3D, then extract file into windows directory, over writing existing file. Start TF3D again. Logo should be gone. Worked for me.
I am losing my touch with this Touch (Fuze) -
Could not overwrite - got error message that basically said that file is write protected and I do not have permission.
Tried to delete the original and then replace - again receive denials.
I have tried to, using a registry editor, make changes to the file (make it able to be read; edit it; rename it;, etc) without any success. All attempts have been rejected.
Perhaps I could trouble you as to how to either overwrite or delete and replace.

Copy the file to somewhere else on the phone, maybe like a temp directory.
Then use TotalCommander to copy the file into windows directory.
Thats it.

Thanks - finally successful in removing the AT&T logo - however, the gray bar remains -

If we could move the date up to the empty space, that would be good.
Am I the only one that has both the date and AT&T on that line?
I wouldn't want to get rid of it, because it would mean getting rid of the date.
I'm using a sprint flip-clock, but I don't recall how it looked in stock form.

I think what you are wanting to get rid of is what I've seen on here referred to as the top "curtain". Do a search on that. I've seen it mentioned somewhere, but I couldn't find it off the bat.

my first post and it's so tricky.
I will change the Icons of an EXE. I searched the Devs and with mister Google but I don't find another way exept the tool "Ressource Hacker". I can see the icons in Ressource Hacker, but there are two Icons (32x32 and 16x16) inside the file. If I change one type of icon, the other one will be lost. When I go to the folder "Icon Group" in Ressource Hacker, there is an icon within two icons. Like in a TIF-graphic with 2 or more pages inside. I can see that in the graphic viewer "IrfanVIEW". Doing a TIF with the icons and rename it to "*.ICO" will not appear in Ressource Hacker. Do I save the patched EXE-file, I can see the changed icon on the pocket PC. But when I copy the file from the SD-Card back to the Program-Folder, the old/original icon comes back.
Must I create an icon-file within two icons (32x32 and 16x16)? If this is correct, how can I do this? If not, what suggestion do you have for me?
do you mind posting the images and .exe that you are trying to change? I should be able to help

@bilborian: Thanks for your help, but there are too much EXEs. I will change my design to a neon design and all programs in the program launcher should be neons.
@ + QUE PPC: Oh, the PEexplorer ist just a little bit too expensive for that little project (129$ for private user). And what do you mean with signed EXEs?
But now, I got it. After a softreset can I see (not all) the new icons.
This works not with all EXEs, some of them have more than one icon inside, because they have different icon matrixes (for example 16x16, 32x32, etc.). I have a problem to select the right matrix for my Trinity (32x32), so I can not see all new icon in my edited EXEs. How can I indicate the right matrix to change a 32x32 icon?
To remove definitively HTC shortcuts/icons who reappared in the start menu do the following process.
in the registry, go to :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\Manila\IsShortcutEn able
Change 1 to 0
SoftReset and magic.......

how do you actually delete the ones you want to get rid of? i under stand this is to stop them reloading but how do you get rid in the first place?
file manager
go to windows>start menu>programs and delete them from there.
Might be an easier way I've not heard of though?

I have made new folders using activesync in my windows/start/programs folder. The new folders are programs, apps web, etc.
Using the phones file manager, I have cut and pasted the appropriate icons in the start menu to their respective new folders that I created. Ex: I put opera and IE in the web folder, camera, video recorder in the mutimedia folder and so on. After I did the cut and paste, when I look at the windows/start/programs folder with either activesync or the phones own file manager, the icons that I cut and pasted are in their new folders, and not in the windows/start/programs folder. But, when I open the start icon on the phone, the icons I cut and pasted to the new folders still are visible, along with the same respective icon that I cut to the folders.
I did all this to unclutter the start screen. I have installed the touch X remove reappearing icon cab and have validated the registry change to 0. But, the supposed cut icons are still there, cluttering up the start page. Any ideas on how to get rid of this things forever??!!
Any solutions......anybody?

Try to restart your device. If it doesn't help, delete those icons from star menu entirely (or move them somewhere else), restart your device (then there should be non of these icons anywhere in start menu) and then move them anywhere you want. It worked for me when i encountered this problem, so it's at least worth the try.. Good luck

i installed the cab and tried deleting icons on both the file explorer and on the windows mobile center on my pc. It is not working. The files are no longer there but the icons are, except now they are grey files, not the icons as before. Please somebody walk me through this step by step.

How can I remove/disable the bottom panel of Sense that hosts the tabs for home, weather, contacts, etc? One can use retract slider, but it still occupies the space. I would like to remove it so that the space will be available to put 2 rows of quick links instead of one. I only use the home and the weather tab, and I can slide between the two, don't need to use the tabs. Thanks for any hint!!!

Yes, what version do you have right now?
Try using mine kitchen, it is some pre-pre-pre-pre-alfa, it still misses a lot of functionality.
Open up the manila visual kitchen, click on Import and import there your Manila_Core\files, it will have about 500 _manila files in it. This folder will get "decompiled" as much as possible. Now search in .mode9 files about bottombar, delete the part (or set it as hidden somehow, there is a lot of possibilities how to do it) and right click on the file -> compile, right click -> push to device -> restart manila on phone and check, if manila starts and if it will be hidden .
